South African High Commissioner to Zambia Moses Chikane has assured the nation that Zambians resident in South Africa are safe from the reported xenophobic attacks being reported in that country.
Mr. Chikane told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that Zambians resident in South Africa are not in danger as police officers have been deployed into the affected areas to contain the situation.
Mr. Chikane, who has also strongly condemned the attacks by South African nationals on foreign nationals, called for calm as the South African government was doing everything possible to bring to book the suspected criminals.
He said although the South Africa government has not considered the attacks on foreign nationals as a national crisis, it is doing everything possible to end the wave of xenophobic violence in that country.
The South African envoy further said South African police officers will continue arresting the perpetrators of such crimes including those committing offences such as looting.
Latest media reports say the wave of xenophobic violence has spread across Johannesburg, bringing the weekend death toll to 13 and some 250 people have since been arresting during the attacks.
The violence against foreigners, who are accused by many South African nationals of depriving locals of jobs and committing crimes, has spread across many South African communities since the beginning of last week.
Wielding guns and machetes, marauding mobs have launched attacks on foreigners from neighbouring Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Yesterday I listened to Police Chief for Gauteng (Jo’burg and Pretoria) on Kaya FM and he was saying even South Africans are being attached. Once again RSA can not acknowledge a crisis. RSA has choosen to dilute the issue of Xenophobia by issuing blanket condemnations and pilling problem on isolated ‘criminal elements’. What a lot of people have to realize is that business can not be successful without good research,knowledge of market potential, ability to evaluate the prevailing conditions of a given economy and many more other important related factors. This means that prospects of investing in any given areas of interest whether by an individual or any other forms of partnership, needs at least the involvement of experts in that field in some ways. However, expertize does not usually come cheap even for a country like Zambia. But this should not discourage a lot of people of goodwill that have genuine plans of investing as a means of empowering the nation in the broader sense. God bless Zambia.

Most of us never left these borders we had no need to. On the other hand living in most West African countries is a much bigger struggle. Countries like Nigeria are ungovernable. Others are snake pits. Over the years West Africans have horned their survival skills. This makes some among them the most unpleasant human beings you will have the misfortune to meet. Yes, Zambians are docile. I agree. But it depends on how you want to intepret that. My view is that we are full of humility. I don’t speak for all zambians but that is probably a general observation. Zambians believe in the rule of law ingraved in their conscience rather than the law. I lived in SA for 10 years and I concluded that we regard human life differently.

Sorry, Zambias population in early 70s was about 4million. 20 000 SAn implies approx 5% of the population without considering Bob’s children, Nujoma’s kids, Savimbi’s kids and Machel’s kids. The total number of immigrants or refugees was well over 15% of the total population and YET we observed the Geneva Convention 51 to respect the diginity of refugees. No fights! We even gave scholarships to refugess to study at Unza and colleges. Now look at SA. They have 3million immigrants which is just approx 6% of the population. Fuzz maths! I must correct this before somebody trashes me. The total immigrants in Zambia by 1974 was about 5% of the total population. This is only refugees. but we had lots of migrant workers in the coppermines from neighboring countries (TZ, Mlw., Rhod. etc). The number was certianly bigger per capital. SA refugees accounted for 0.5% but in retrospect they brought more misery than all immigrants combined!!! Bombings from SA and Smith. Mbulawa(#33) is very right. Zambians are considered docile by west africans because some of us are too slow and too trusting. Imagine this, Nigeria is half the size of Zambia yet they are 160 million people in that country were as in Zambia we are just over 10 million. To me this means that life in Ngeria is a hustle, you have to fight to survive because there are too many people and too few resources (minus oil of course). In Zambia, its the other way round, too few people and a lot of resources. So when a Nigerian comes to Zambia he will find it easy to survive and hustle and he/she ill look down on Zambians for not taking advantage of the situation.

Fellow Africans, What is a foreign country here? Africans should realise their borders were made for them by Bismarck in Europe. Europe defined Africa according to its interests; mineral resources etc. Before 1884 there was no foreign country for us. Why hang on to a definition of yourself done by foreign people? Why not re-define yourself after you have declared yourselves free? The apartheid regime defined South Africans into bantustans and some of them agreed with this and started chasing other tribes from their new borders.
