What a joke. The president is lying in a French hospital in a coma. The nation has been kept in the dark as far as how grave his condition is. The VP has no legal authority to temporarily assume Presidential responsibility because of Mwanawasa’s greed, lack of forsight and wisdom. So how do we get to the point of “reasonably” suspecting Levi to be incapable of ruling if a medical board is not constituted. I don’t know the politics behind this, but I want to agree with Sata on the constitution of a medical board for the sake of the nation being properly informed, I am not sure what the TORs will look like but I would imagine it would include giving feedbaco to the nation on the actual status of the President. 16 days of STABLE and SATISFACTORY on coma might not be the way to go for a President, its unfortunate people are talking of him as just another Government employee.

While I apprecaite the need for continued prayers for the LPM, we should be preoccupied with how best the country should be run. LPM’s sickness should not bring the whole country to a stand still.(Halt). Let us distinguish between LPM as a President, and him as a citizen. HH’s statement is very logical. The President is still undergoing treatment after which it will be determined whether he is fit to continue or not. Cabinet makes the recommendation to the Chief Justice to constitute a medical board to carry out an enquiry into the health of the President. The CJ then submits the findings to the National Assembly who will then put the motion to a vote. If the report says he is unfit and this is ratified by a two thirds majority, he ceases to hold office. The Vice President then assumes office for a three months period and then elections. The process requires time and must be approached with level heads not the uninformed positions most people are proposing.

People need to realize that the Presidents illness is not a private MMD matter. He is the Republican President and as such we are ALL affected by this. The way to respect the President and his family at the same time ensure that the country’s best interests are realised is to adhere to the constitution. The true nature of Levi’s condition needs to be determined by an independent medical board and the nation needs to informed in a truthful manner. How is it that for the average person who suffers from a stroke, doctors are able to give them a prognosis following examination? How is Levy any different? How and when will he be determined to be incapacitated?

Hold your fire on your sentiments against Sata. He is a citizen just like any other. He has the right to question it and suggest where he could be heard. The futility of life is so evident, that we never have to take chances. What if he died in a week’s time, or even tomorrow? Use the brainy suggestions positively. HH supporters must be disappointed with the statement attributed to HH. What Sata is asking is reasonable, we all need to know the status of the President because this has a lot of implications on security, economy and peace of the nation. I can imagine a journalist asking HH about what he intends to do as President and he would most likely say “give me reasonable time” to think about that question. The problem with HH is that he does not have experience at all.

There are no “intruments of power” per se in Zambia, we don’t have nuclear weapons for code transfers etc… When leaving the country, the President simply delegates the administrative authority of the office to the VP or whom he chooses, he is compelle by law to advise the secretary of cabinet by writing of this. The President retains the commander in chief and other stutory powers while away, the the acting President can not legally declare war, change laws or reshuffle Presidential appointments. Much as I support HH I think on this one he is wrong because he does not specify a time frame which I largely feel is not necessarily an individual’s problem but a lapse in our constitition. In the absence of a specified time frame in our constitution it is left to people’s opinion which both Sata and HH are using. Going the blog, it is apparent that we have a leadership problem in Zambia. While we encourage political competition democratic state, we should know by now the likey successors of LPM come 2011. Now we all sorts of name from Kaunda…HH..Sata..Katele..Shikapwasha.etc. The problem we have is most political parties are not democratic and hence there is no clear succession plan within these parties. So far there has been a media black out on what is really happening to the President, in this regard I would say HH is wrong. I don’t understand people who underrate Sata, the man has tonnes of experience to deal with just about any issue. When the british colonial government was running things in Zambia Sata was there, he was also there in KK and Chiluba’s administration and is now Zambia’s biggest opposition leader and was cheated of victory in the 2006 elections. A chain of degrees can not compare to the amount of experience this man has. He is the right person to lead Zambia up to 2011. ESK #230 LPM suffered a stroke which led to a stroke and is currently in ICU and as far as Zambians know still in coma. Einstein,i have no clue as to when doctors make decisions however,the French doctors have told close relations in Paris that at this stage they can only wait because sometimes it may take even 40 days or more after falling into coma for someone to move a finger etc so it’s only a matter of waiting as all the results from monitors indicate that the President is steady apart from when they noted that breathing was a little bit difficult the other week but that is now sorted.

When Zambia was facing an economic decline, since most if not all of the companies where owned by govt, they also had to be funded by govt. They are many mistakes KK made with his system of govt and the BIGGEST one was having monopolies. They where too many monopolies during KK’s time because KK never wanted competition in the fear that consumers might switch to the alternative. Also making Zambia a closed economy. Without trade, other industries cannot develop because for them to develop, they need to export and also face foreign competition so they can improve on there products but in KK’s system, they where limited to the Zambian market which meant limited market.

Also if you have a bunch of monopolies which are run by govt, the probability of getting good leadership for those companies is extremely slim.

When a bunch of monopolies owned by govt are making losses, govt is left with a few choices, either raise taxes so as to pay for the losses, transfer the money meant for other parts of the economy to the failing companies or borrow money which is what KK did. KK borrowed money in the hope that copper prices will rise but that never happened leaving Zambia with a bunch of failing companies and a huge debt.

Chiluba was left with a few choices on his hand. He inherited a country which has huge debts and failing govt owned monopolies. What Chiluba had to do was sell the monopolies in the hope that competitors might show up, remove the fixed exchange rate policy, make Zambia an open economy and also Capitalise.

Now this is where the problem comes from. Copper prices down and copper production diminishing and lets not forget the huge debt. Copper was the chief foreign exchange earner of the country (thanks to KK). Most of the foreign exchange earned through copper sales was used to pay off the debt. This meant local companies and govt had less foreign currency to buy inputs for the economy.

Companies could no longer buy inputs because of the little foreign currency in the country and lets not forget govt couldn’t buy the necessary infrastructure needed in the economy. Chiluba was left with this choice, raise taxes and print more money. This resulted in inflation. With inflation on the rise, banks could no longer make profits and so they had to raise there interest rates. With high taxes and high interest rates, companies relocated and others closed. And to also add a dash of corruption, it was obvious the direction the country was heading. LPM (though i dont support him) is at least trying to cancel out the mess caused by KK’s economic policies.

Zim and DRC have always had different political parties. After 1980 Zim had ZANU-PF under Mugabe and another party lead by J. Nkomo I believe. I don’t know much about pre- 1980 Zimbabwe. DRC had many parties too, Lumumba and others had their own parties. I think even Lumumba road must have been named after this DRC politician.

China will be the most powerful country in the world in a few year time (5 -10 years). I believe that the Chinese had realised that Multi-party democracy though good a a concept, it would bring division in china and weaken the country. In China, govt does not own 60% of your business (which was KK’s system). There are many countries in which communism has failed. Just look at the difference between North and South Korea. The chinese have a 3 tier system which is something like this: the chinese gov’t controls 50% of the companies i.e. state companies, 1/4 is owned by private chinese individuals and then the other 1/4 is what the have left for the foreign investors. So from my simple break down you can see that between the gov’t the the individual chinese investors, they control 3/4 of the econonmy and only a 1/4 is left to foreign investors. I believe this is what we need in Zambia not where by foreign investors control about 90% of our economy, the gov’t has 8% and local investors 2%. That is why Zambia can not develop like this.

But Zambia is the the copperbelt and Luapula provinces alone. We know that Sata has got no presence in North western, Southern, Eastern and western provinces. He simply does not appeal to those people. Kaponyas alone do not make the Zambian population.

Those who say that HH only has a presence in Southern Province should get to ECZ to verify their wrong information. Sata will never rule Zambia.

PF Secretary General, Edward Mumbi has confirmed the death to ZNBC News in the Zambian capital, Lusaka.

Mr. Mumbi said the late Kanyanyamina died around 01:00 hrs Friday morning at Chilonga Mission Hospital in Mpika District after an illness.
