Zambia to handover SADC chairmanship to SA

Share

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, Mike Mulongoti says government is ready and prepared to hand over the Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairmanship to South Africa this month.

Mr. Mulongoti says in the absence of President Mwanawasa ,who is the current chair of SADC, Vice President, Rupiah Banda will hand over the chairmanship.

Mr. Mulongoti said in an interview in Lusaka today.

He added that Foreign Affairs Minister, Kabinga Pande or any other minister who will be available at the hand over ceremony will present the chairmanship in case Vice President Rupiah Banda will not be available.

Mr. Mulongoti said various ministers are currently preparing to travel to South Africa to handover chairmanship positions in the various committees.

“As a country we are ready to handover the SADC chairmanship despite the absence of President Mwanawasa who is currently the chairman of SADC,” Mr. Mulongoti said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mulongoti has urged Zambians to prepare and embrace the SADC/ COMESA customs unions once introduced in December this year.

Mr. Mulongoti said Zambian business and the general public should not be scared of the customs union once introduced but rather they should sharpen their various skills in benefit services the facilities will offer.

He said Government is ready to support the customs union adding that other member states should do so in order to ensure success of the union in the region.

  1. Its a classic, Levy is incapacitated and SADC cannot wait indefinatelly. What is amazings is if an organization can not wait indefinatelly why should a country wait for LPM to come out of his vegitative state?

  2. The organisations we have on this African continent don’t even make any sense.Who benefits from this crappy SADC?What are its objectives? What do they want to achieve? What do we get out of every meeting held????

  3. This news article is confusing, Why is LPM mandate being terminated, Was this part of Zimbabwe scheme becozi LPM developed a stroke before sitting next to Mugabe.
Is the Zambian presidency next in hand over plans.

  4. Why did we send a small delegation for the Olympics of less than 11 people when we do afford to send 24 football players abroad several times only to lose. Olympics is about the number of participants in various sports categories.

Why have retrogressed, where are ZAF, ZAMNIA ARMY, ZNS , ZAMBIA POLICE athletes that composed most of our olympics delegation before. A small delegation puts pressure on the delegation to bring medals. Why do we want to stress our sportsmen.

  5. SADC chairmanship is for one year. LPM’s term has thus expired by lapse of time. I trust if LPM had not been the chairman, he would not have had the stroke. Bloody Mugabe gave him stress all along and meeting him face to face in Egypt..was too much to contain.

  6. I guess we are the only country as far as i can remember that has had no president for such a long time. The fact that Zambia has been put under pressure to hand over SADC chairmanship means a lot.

  7. Work up call,SADC have seen what our nation have failed to see,i can’t just believe, to date we are still thinking LPM will come back. This man is done what else are we waiting for.I never thought there was a stupid nation like Zambia probably war will work us up .we are living carelessly has a nation.

  8. This news is shocking, SADC heads of states have foreseen and am sure they have proper information on LPM healthwise than us Zambians thats why they have asked our government to handover SADC Chairmanship to SA.
Why Mulogoti naba nakwe were hiding proper information on our own loved president? Useless ministers.

  9. I think these fools we call Zambian politians want to steel some stuff before they declare lpm dead. They are talking like they are talking to kids. Making up stupid excuses that don’t make any sense. Whom are they taking us for? I am for a military coup, maybe a soldier will jack us up.

  10. To be relevant lets get to know these things:Conventions, Treaties and collective economic/security bodies our country is signed up to.The SADC chair is a one year revolving seat which rotates in early August.President Mwanawasa’s term has come to its end.Even COMESA has that term limit to its secretariat.Malawi’s Dr. Mbingu Wamutalika was there, he left it to Festus Mwecha and now its with our Dr.Zoonadi Ngenya (stand to be corrected).Even JMCs chairmanship change hands.Nothing is odd with this collective body constitutional obsevance.

  11. Ndine # 13,
You sound to have grown up in sadness, rejection and hopelessness.I equally doubt if you love yourself, your family or carry any potential with ambitions of ever playing some useful role in this country.A military Coup? I believe you will get a personalized one some day.We all get what we ask for in life be it out of our unbridled ignorance or gutter stupidity void of a future.Patriots are ready for your coup. But be assured that now Zambia has professional Defense outfits & in collective security pacts on crushing coups in SADC member countries.Weigh also the international community interest in Regional Democracy.Write your “will”.

  12. imwe ba ngwele SADC chairmanship is one year. This has nothing 2 do with his stroke. Nkanshi mubwata bwata fye with no ingormation. I like number 7, His leadership asks.

  13. sad development indeed.abena zambia, lets take care of our country, lets continue praying yes and lets open our eyes at the same time and see and analyze how these events are unfolding.

  14. mmmmm, bachi tawala taba nwa bwantu? They think its beer eeehhh? I will take it myself during visiting hour and try to convince him. It has a lot of energy u know.

  15. iwe chi 25 Musikana, did you read posting number 19? Fontini niwebo. It is called typing error OK. Hope you get it. Sorry to call u fontini.

  16. You risk wearing out at the hands of the MMD.This is a moral, ethical & constitutional dilemma too hard to stand out on the opposite side.Too much push allienates you from a sober society destroying oneself politically. Many cultured Zambians will deem noise makers as callous misfits to the christian national values. No one wants to ruin his political life over an impossible game. This said, MMD will reign upto 2011 while consolidating its position for another victory. Many will grow tired and poor out of the next two years of rhetoric & unproductivity having given own lives to 24/7 blogging like Mwiinga.MMD is making money with their protege as emerging leaders in schools & professional progrm

  17. zambia is a nation which can’t see anythin’.I don’t really understand our country.Maybe we’re too ignorant, that’s why we can’t even build a good hypermarket with escallators .we just have 5 places with escallators the all country.
what i’m saying is tht lpm won’t come back.Other countries have seen tht except zambia which’s still praying.I think it was wrong 2 decrare zambia as a christian nation.we’ll never develop always we’ll be waiting 4 miracles even if we can sovle the issue.sadc will replace lpm while zed is still praying .It seems zambia has no leaders to succeed lmp.

  18. Guys,SADC chairmanship is 1 yr and LPM wld stil hav handed ova if he was well. What we shld b worried about as a nation is whether LPM is in a condition 2 conti..at plot 1 when he returns. If nt,who is capable 2 go plot 1 cme elections 4 continuity.

  19. # 33 spot on. You are intelligent man. People are confusing the SADC chairman, illness and replacing LPM at plot one. Let us debate his illness and plot one. Whether LPM was healthy or not SADC chairmanship will be handed to SA this month.

  20. #33,we’ve Miyanda,Ngondo,BY,Mumba,Magande,Maureen,Mpande,Mutati,Sata and HH.The choice is all ours 2 take our beloved country backwards or forward.Definately no1 wld wnt the country 2 go backwards.

  21. Pragmatist, Bwanji bwana ba Pragmatist, twamizibani ndimwe asilikali nkasi, nowada musapota maningi Boma.

    good bye bazungu batu

  22. #34 thanx.Am realibly informed rite frm Percy tht the news which we are waiting frm France is nt anything good which we shld even look 4ward 2.Things are nt gud 4 our bigman.Only a miracle wil make LPM come bck on his 2 legs.Realible source!

  23. It is sad that so many Zambians are ignorant about SADC. The chair of SADC rotates every year. Please read the SADC Treaty. Typically the country that hosts the annual sumit takes over the chairmanship. This year the meeting starts on August 12 in Pretoria, South Africa. Therefore, according to the SADC treaty, South Africa becomes the chair.

Typical Zambian mentality-there must be a conspirancy. Please rid yourselves of ignorance and stupidity by reading.

  24. Pragmatish is an employee of MMD secretariat and is actually paid 2 defend MMD/Govt policies on various platforms.Thts his job and thts how he earns a living. Its nt his fault bt i pitty him coz change is cming pretty soon.

  25. Pragmatist is an employee of MMD secretariat and is actually paid 2 defend MMD/Govt policies on various platforms.Thts his job and thts how he earns a living. Its nt his fault bt i pitty him coz change is cming pretty soon.

  26. that ZNBC reports that Levy is stable, but heavily sedated

President Levy Mwanawasa is said to be in a stable but heavily sedated condition in the intensive care unit of Percy Military hospital in Paris, France.

  27. This is indeed a defining moment for Zed!!! Its a shame that Most vocal Zambian politicians are not there for service but to fatten their pockets. I for one trust Miyanda but he should try to viciously campaign, or else we need an ‘obama’ if # 37’s assertions come true which i believe is near to reality

  28. Yaba, bati bvuta ma shushu (Office of President agents) abena PRAGMATIST.Anyway,he/she is a zambian too who has relatives including himself who have suffered at the hands of MMD one way or the other hence the need to send this govt parking !!

  29. I doubt that Pragmatist works for the MMD secretariat, I have a strong feeling he works for the Zambia Army as an officer and has been a United Nations Military observer. He might have served in CONGO and the SUDAN. However its my belief that he blogs just like any other blogger, nothing to do with his duties. It easy from his vocabulary l to tell were he works.

  30. fellow bloggers, its been a productive day/night. Thanks for your comments. Some were intelligent ones, others very foolish, shallow and showed how some bloggers are uninformed.

    naya mukulala bane.ninebo 1….===….> bye

  31. Lets leave SADC and stick to COMMESA. The polygamous relationship between Zed and these useless organizations is not working out. SADC has been like a noisy problematic wife. COMMESA like a quiet, peaceful and more promising spouse.

  32. What has SADC done for I and I? Words without action.
What has Jah done for I and I? Everything and more than words!
So Dread bun SADC and lift up the banner: Red, Gold and Green for the true Liberation of Black people universally! Ras Tafar I!

  33. So SADC is being told the truth, the Zambian population still whispering in each others ears,i know the truth about Levy and it is just a matter of time everyone will finally be told and move forward

  34. #37 Stop this ‘realibly informed rite from frm Percy’ thing.Your other contributions have made headline which is good.Lets just observe the time LPM will remain in his stable condition.Come 90 days lets see what ka Mulongoti will tell the nation.[mulongoti means pipe] his thinking is narrowed to one opening only.Close one end and the man is doomed…

  35. Handing over SADIC Chairmanship? Why not other things that he can not perform like leadership for this country?

  36. This bum dread *****, please use proper english and not ganja propelled vocabularly. Not all bloggers smoke ganja nor are they rastas. Keep this nonsense to your self

  37. SADC or not, i don’t give a damn here.Zambia is just like an egg shell without a york, people blinded to death and yet this stupid minister pocket enough to last them a life time.Waite till the egg shell breaks and the truth will be revealed.all this minister will be heading for judicial review charged with mass corruption.

  38. Bane Bonse, I have mentioned this time and again that aba bangwele mu government have been trying to seal up holes. They have been stealing like no man’s business. Levy’s sickness to them has been a blessing in disguise. They are failing to come out in open to tell the nation that LMP in incapacitated. Wake up Zedians !!!!!!!!

  39. #18,20,22 & 26 you’ve made my day..! Reminds me of a day in life when i was sent to take nshima for some relation admitted to UTH only to find she’s been discharged…came back with the stuff and made a feast at Woodlands stadium with a friend and bro! typical of boys growing into men!!!

  40. I wouldnt mind donating my brain in bashi chipo!Did I read SADC handover of chairmanship? yes. Zambia’s term is cmoing to an end and no links with his recovery. after all even when he recovers, he would be like a baby, learning how to talk, breast feed, crying in the night, dipers and a whole lot, dadadadadadadadadada

  41. 22/26 there is no chitawala,it’s a name manufactured by you chaps who are still walking mu finfi like a kolokombwa, always looking 4 a human being 2 lead you instead of calling upon jesus 2 come and lead.4 yr own infor most of these leaders on the sceen are ill and some are bound to became ill.
    Mwefumu Yesu iseni, twachula pafula.

  42. Number 67, you seem to be making fun of a serious issue. Anyone of us can fall ill, even you. We don’t know what the situation is with LPM. Let us just hope and pray for the best as we would for anyone who is ill. As for the handover of the SADC Chair, it is fact that SADC member states take it in turns, so each year a different country Chairs the organization. The same situation is true for COMESA, where COMESA member states also take it in turns resulting in a new Chair each year.

  43. I request to ask some questions. Is RB Acting President now or Levy is still in the reign? If so did he get proper Handover and authority from Levy or a certificate from the Chief Justice to do so and when? What is the length of Acting capacity in this case before calling for fresh elections? I beg to learn please.

  44. #67 No matter how blessed you are God forbid what you are saying.Be serious and LPM did not want to be in the serious situation he is in France.Grow man or lady!

  45. ACCOMODATION WANTED

BACHELOR URGENTLY SEEKS GUEST COTTAGE FOR IMMEDIATE OCCUPATION IN LUFWANYA, MONGU OR MPIKA @ K4,350,000 MONTHLY (NEGOTIABLE). NO AGENTS PLEASE. CONTACT Services Minister, Mike OR Doctors in France

  46. gentlemen, could someone in the know explain how Zambia benifits from SADC apart from visa free travel, all trade is virtually one way, SA to Zambia. Zambia only exports thruo SA with little goods destined for the SA market. It seems SA is handsomley benifitting from customes free trade with us.

  47. SADC CHAIRMANSHIP IS FOR A ONE YEAR TERM ONLY SO SOUTH AFRICA WHICH HAS BEEN VICE CHAIR IS NOW TAKING OVER. NOTE WE WERE ALSO VICE CHAIR WHEN THE LESOTHO PRIME MINISTER WAS CHAIR AND THEN LPM TOOK OVER. NOTHING SINISTER ABOUT THIS. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT LPM HAS BEEN A FAILURE AS A SADC CHAIR AND MOST LIKELY THE PRESSURES OF DEALING WITH ZIM ISSUE HAD A MAJOR ROLE IN HIS ILLNESS

  48. #67 You should be sincere to our president. LPM did not put himself in that situation. Even you can be in that state anytime. So lets try and respect him because he is also human. He is also our president. Any human being can fall sick anytime.

  49. 75. Stop asking silly questions. Who do you expect to reaserch for you. You cant even pay for these consulting services you are indirectly asking for. Learn to do things on your own and stop asking silly questions as if your are a grade two teacher. Stupid.

  50. Zambia’s term as Sadc chair has come to an end and not Lpm’s.Every August there’s meant to be a new chair, so its Sa’s turn.

  51. #this could have been captain’s Solo oppotunity to succeed in all the coup attemps that had failed. Hope he had gats for second attempt. # I mlong and his fellow regulary visiting the high court to explain the misappropriation of funds and abuse of office. did i hear sum1 say amen? lets be watchful and not ONLY for LPM, but our sake.

  52. Only a person with no feelings for humanity can write things like #67. This gentleman is in need of serious deliverance from evil. Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they blog.

  53. # 78 you are right #75’s question = to Zero.lol why can’t he go back to school and learn *****

  54. #78 & 82 Why not just admit that you don’t have the answers that # 75 seeks instead of being sarcastic. This is a forum for exchanging information and getting views on the topical views.

  55. #76 Realist, you state that ‘LPM has been a failure as SADC chair’ without elaborating. I beg to ask which chairman before him had done better and in what ways. To the contrary, I believe that Levy did well during his 1 year tenure as he faced head on thorny issues that others before him had chosen to conviniently ignore such as the Zimbabwe crisis. As a result of his proactiveness, MDC leader Tsvangirai preferred him as mediator in place of SA’s Mbeki. He did well!

  56. #83 the so called cheif then why can’t you offer an answer since you are so kind like a posititue who opens at anytime. Learn to be serious with your life in life. When i was at oxford university i learn’t that for you to understand any topic or participate effectively in any given forum you need to a masters researh. By doing this you can never be disappointed ok

  57. I am the real Prof. I have not insulted since I can on this site today. I dont know who is impersonating me. pliz stop it. thanx

  58. #85 I believe that my comment # 83 was polite enough as opposed to the insults you vent out on me. I can only conclude that you have no capacity for exchanging in an intelligent and mature debate despite your exposure to high education. Besides your posting is quite incomprehensible given the disjointed English that you apply.

  59. I should share my worries country men. Things are getting serious and confusing everyday. What was SADC told that they cant wait for him to recover? You can start to think we are being taken for a ride.I feel for LPM,and are sad about his situation, but Zambia has to go on.Please dont we have Zambians in France who write on this blog? Cant they find out about LPM and inform us.We have only one Zambia.

  60. #87 Then I owe an apology to you Prof. I have just been hit by this impersonator at # 86. That is not my style.

  64. You beginners why cant you go to a site which uses this chikabanga language you are trying to introduce here. You are actually not smart fellows but stinky asses.

  65. Can you guys in Zambia find something better to do rather than continuos blogging?

  66. Conman#59. Please stop insulting others, let Jah people express themselves in the way they want, for your own info I and I am rasta and da do no mean every den rasta smoke ganja, but even then wats your beef, others use Bemba on the blog, does that mean everyone understands Bemba, this shows how little you are in your ka small mind,JAH RASTA, ONE LOVE,ONE HEART

  67. WAWA,#104 Who ever told you that to be a rastafarian then you have to smoke,my friend read widely about rasta movement and if you believe what you just said,do you mean everyone who smokes the herb in zed or elsewhere are are rasta,by the way here in the states, some states have past laws allowing the use of ganja as medicine, again do you think all these people who will use it are rasta, dont paint our movement without really knowing facts and one last think, you dont have to smoke or to dread to be rasta.

  68. Mulongoti, pliz advise the 1st Lady and your ministers to make sure that this SADC handover does not reach the ears of LPM. In the state he’s in he might think its Zambia or his presidency being handed over to Mbeki. Am sure you dont want his condition to be a from the frying pan into the fire situation.

  69. #8, you cant send villages from Chipata to the olympics. In nearly all disciplines you need to qualify inorder to compete in the olympics unless you are invited as a wildcard.

  70. OKAY, FELLOW BLOGGERS, THIS IS OFF THE TOPIC AT HAND BUT MY QUESTION IS; IS TRACHEOTOMY A REVERSIBLE OPERATION OR NOT? COZ I HEAR THEY PUT A SMALL TUBE ON THE MKOLOMINO OF LPM TO AID HIM BREATHE. NOMBA CAN THIS THING BE REMOVED WITHOUT CAUSING LOSS OF THE VOICE? NGA FWENIKO BA SHING’ANGA BA BANTU.

  71. The handover has nothing to do with the president’s sickness as his tenure of chairmanship is over. Now let us know what will happen if he will still remain in ICU after 3 moths i.e. 29.09.08

  72. #11 are u one of the plunderers in court? u sound xcited at levy’s absence and are in a hurry to replace. is it bcoz ufuna milandu zanu kufa a natural death….imagine chili pali iwe

  73. i think SA will make most of the chair since they have managed to sort out the Zim issue. They probabaly have the better skill at rsolving issues and approach conflicts with a cool head unlike us we just went off shooting without looking at the diplomatic consequences.

  74. Hey guyz what happened on Friday did the honking happen or pipo grew gold feet afterole, i went in coma at UTH and hv just waken up and in stable condition.

  75. #113 Kalumbi

What mbeki is trying to do is legitimising a Government of suppression. The Majority of the people did not want Mugabe and yet there is Mbeki imposing Mugabe on them. What a help.

  76. #113 Kalumbi

The people have suffered under this despot that Mbeki is supporting.

Mbeki is an accesory to this evil, dont you see? He did not see any wrong when Zims where being bunrt in S.A.

Mugabe has openly killed people and hoping to get immunity with Mbekis Aid. Dont you see.

  77. #119

How do you mediate between a killer and a loser of elections on one hand and on the other a legitimate winner of elections .

  78. #119

You cant be NEUTRAL when it comes to mass murder. You mean he can pretend that Mugabe has not committed murder?

  79. #119 Neutrallity only applies when generally some amount of shared blame could be apportioned to the parties to be mediated.

The Zim case could be likened unto a case in which a husband has butchered his own children for inclining themselves to the mother and the mediator to this crisis tells the two parties to sit down and work out their differences! No! There is a crime committed here. The husband needs to be prosecuted.

  80. Anonymous (120 – 123),

What an irony? You silence everyone on the blog by asking them to get to work while you go on a 30 minute blogging adventure. What a hypocrite! My friend, you do not hold the monopoly of this blog.

  81. as a zambian, i am proud of how zambia has led sadc during the past one year. lpm was always available to lead committee and plenary sessions, let alone his independent stance against this neighbouring thug called mugabe. we were never puppets of any stronger country in sadc. we were very independent, and that says a lot about the president.

mbeki is a diluted and weakened man right now – both at home and internationally. i cannot expetc much from him. imagine a president whose intelligence wing relies on radio stations for information – and can order a minute of silence for a national leader who has not died.

  82. Is it alraedy a year since LPM got the chairmanship?is ther some rat smelling soemwhere?in the kitchen or wardrobe?

  83. Instead of taking care of your families, u are busy arguing over the SADC issue which will give u no profit at all. Plan for your children’s future and not SADC’s future. Wether Mwanawasa is Sick or not, the Chairmanship is only for one year. What else are u looking for?

  84. smelly koswe is in yo bamba, because all of us the enlightened masses knew that come july SADC chairmanship will be handed to SA. Again next year this time SA will handover the chairmanship to another country, again two years from now the then SADC Chair will handover the chairmanship to another country………..and again to it will come to Zambia. It will continue going circles, OK #130. So this smelly rat is in your pant for being ignorant. Read widely as Mulongoti tells you.

  85. Conman how yu fi dis de Rastaman? I man not on this site to blog to your expectations, me have me own mind and me own way fe express meself, seen? If you can’t stand me, well then take a trip to hell because there’s much more of me to see! RastafarI

  86. #14 and #24, the acting Secretary General of COMESA is neither a “DR” nor a “Zoonadi”. Yes he is Ngwenya but Sindiso Ngwenya and a “Mr”.

Reading these comments just makes me realise how “lost” people can be living as second-class citizens in other countries.
