Fuel increments to push up production costs

Share

Farmers in Chipata district have expressed fears that the continuous increment in fuel prices will affect agriculture production in the 2008 and 2009 farming season.

Chipata district Farmers Association Virgil Malambo complained that the cost of production would increase and negatively affect the farmers who have no control over the market prices of their produce.

Mr. Malambo told ZANIS in interview that buyers of market produce would be offering low prices because of the transportation costs that they will have to take into account.

Meanwhile, an agricultural supplier in Chipata has said the increment in fuel prices would affect the supply of agricultural inputs to farmers in the district.

Managing director at Sheni Agricultural Suppliers, Yusuf Patel said all prices would increase adding that farmers may not be able to cater for both transport and procurement of their inputs.

Mr. Patel said it would be costly for the farmers to purchase requirements for their production especially that most of them did not have enough yields in the last farming season.

“Farming will be an expensive venture, we anticipate all prices to go up and farmers may find it difficult to cover those expenses,” he said.

In another development, the business community in Chipata district has called on government to reduce tax on petroleum products to reduce the price of fuel in the country.

Eastern Province Petroleum Filling Station Managing Director, Salim valley said the increment in fuel prices would affect the prices of all the basic needs of people in the country.

He stated that Zambia is among the countries that are offering the highest prices of the commodity in the southern region.

And a check by ZANIS found that the filling stations were selling the commodity at the increased prices with diesel selling at K9, 013 from K8, 032, while petrol is selling at K10, 220 from K9, 086 and kerosene is selling at K6, 347 from K5, 697 respectively.

  1. Listen though this thing is really gonna knock out Zambia below the belt truth is it has knocked out most countries of the globe except mid east countries which have the commodities inside their country bellies! So yes its hit us badly but see thats the more reason why we should also not have kids gloves when fixing copper/cobalt prices. Let the whole world pay through their nose then we can afford to pay for expensive essentials as well. The people who were busy plundering the economy and not investing in productive ventures must be made to pay heavily now!! Heard about Faustin Kabwe & Francis Kaunda? Time will tell on the rest. Cheers ma guys

  2. I feel u # 2.But the other thing we need to urgently do is have Presidential elections.By the time we have elections @ MMD’s pace the country wud have gone beyond redemption. The country is in riffraffs hands currentky & everybody its freestyle.

The mentioned prices are too high for a common man from the rural areas and slums. All is happening in a country where 80% othe people are living in abject poverty. Even when food is produced, it is consumed in a traditional way without any nutritional balance or procession due to the greedness and poor progtrammes of the leadership. The Characters are busy stealing money when poor zedins are suffering. The cocroaches are now inreasing

  4. their salaries when people are suffering.Resident Doctors have gone on strke due to low housing allowances. This housing allowance has affected not only doctors but Police, Immigation, Prisons,Teachers, Lectures , Magirstrates, Court Justces and all civil servants. If the characters feel are safe by amassing wealth and demanding protection and hard work from starving people, they should forget. One may receive a bullet from his bodyguard if incetives are over looked due to greed and temporal power.Read ANIMAL FARM and you will learn manners. Understand why countries go to war and learn the benefits. There is always time when money can not help anything. A few characters like these plunderers

  5. Katele, Samuel Musonda , Fauston Kabwe, Chiluba and other goats have contnued enjoying despite court dirctves due to money. Not everybody will be lack and its important people`s will and plight is taken into consideration all the time.People are convcted but always on bail. Others are attemting to steal legally when LPM is in Comma. Money has a limit to help people and there is a time when money is useless. Think about this and you will remember these words sooner or later, collectively or individually. Abash political corruption and masterbation. Viva Zambian people.

  6. The facts are that, It is not normal to have such high prices despite the increased Cost by suppliers. the Survey on the retail price per country in the orld will show that Zambia has approximately 1.5 Dollars cost higher per liter on retail.
These cost are all to do with overhead and inefienciency by our pricing, Indeni, OMC and to an etent interest groups(price gauging. We need toseriously look at this industry with scrutiny b4 it reverses our economic gains.
how can we be paying over 3 dollars per liter when the global average is 1.8 dollars. Even countries like malawi and Zmbabwe has cheaper fuel price.

  7. This is a disaster!!why is it that Zambian fuel prices keep rising unlike other countries in the region?what’s so unusual about us?are our govt officials so dull or selfish?ERB should be closed down coz all they do is announce feul price hikes! Malambo mudala, you pointed out the real stuff..let them know so they don’t complain that they werent told…

  8. By the way, has ERB cared to explain the exploitative COST PLUS MODEL? Where did this model come from? Fuel bwana is just too high at 10pin per liter for petrol!!!

  9. If the kwacha lost some value the cost would slide downwards.

Unfortunately, there is no policy framework in which GRZ can influence the strength of the kwacha.

It is not only our fuel which is expensive, our food, services and whatever else in the equation.

Our goods are expensive, while we can afford to cheaply import goods.

Our banks interest rates are too high.

Added to this is no growth in employment levels.

  10. The problem of fuel is not that of Government, it is an international problem requiring an international solution to home grown needs and requirements.

One of the ways is to begin to rationalise usage of transport facilities. The best way forward is from now on for families to use one vehicle when going to school and work and that such a vehicle be driven by the wife or girlfriend rather than men coz we men are carelessly fast and like moving randomly hence wasting fuel!

  11. #2
I get you as well. So you mean we’re indirectly paying the wages of our thieving leaders (FTJ & gang). The burden is too heavy. Let them carry it for themselves.

  12. hey thats not true vast yes its world wide but zed is too much we paying 50us cents for d and petrol 1usd. kick the chine obres out of zed coz they are just busy sending the cash home…

  13. My fellow Zambians, it is time we woke up from slumber. Who says that the world is paying US$3.00 per litre? zambian fuel pricing has alwyas been suspect and it continues to. If you buy fuel at this price, then it means a barrel is costing Zambai US$630.00 This is outrageous! It is town we asked the government to substantiate these costs. In RSA the cost is less than US$1.20, why? Some late artist sung well of us Zambians that we needed to have our heads opened up “We chipuwa isuke mutwe!” The salaries are put for MPs and even boasts that previous leaders had their time and now it is theirs. Bane, ishubukeni napapata.
