Government through AVIC International Company (Zhejiang), is constructing a 40-kilometre feeder road stretching from Tapo to Lulambo in Mongu District of Western Province as part of efforts to improve rural connectivity and enhance access to essential services.
Western Province Permanent Secretary Simomo Akapelwa disclosed this shortly after inspecting the progress of works on the road project.
Mr Akapelwa said the road, once completed, will significantly improve the movement of people, goods and services while facilitating easier access to health, education and other government services for communities in the area.
He noted that the project forms part of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen rural infrastructure and stimulate socio-economic development in underserved areas
.
The Permanent Secretary reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the road network across Western Province, stating that enhanced connectivity is key to unlocking economic opportunities and improving the livelihoods of rural populations.
“Government remains committed to ensuring that rural communities are connected through quality road infrastructure in order to promote development and improve service delivery,” Mr Akapelwa said.
And Mongu District Commissioner Morgan Akabeswa reaffirmed the government’s dedication to developing rural road infrastructure, saying improved roads are essential for accelerating development and reducing challenges faced by people living in remote areas.
Mr Akabeswa observed that the ongoing works will contribute to increased economic activities by providing farmers and traders with easier access to markets and other services.
Meanwhile, Western Province Roads Development Agency Regional Engineer Moses Chitambala said approximately nine kilometres of the road have already been upgraded to an all-weather gravel standard.
Mr Chitambala explained that the road project is part of a wider programme aimed at improving road infrastructure across the province.
He revealed that about 150 kilometres of roads are earmarked for rehabilitation and upgrading in Mongu, Limulunga and Kalabo districts under the same initiative.
Mr Chitambala expressed confidence that the project will be completed within the stipulated time frame and deliver the intended benefits to local communities.
Speaking on behalf of residents, Tembo Tembo of Lulambo welcomed the road project, describing it as a major milestone for the area.
Mr Tembo said communities previously experienced difficulties accessing government services due to the poor state of the road, especially during the rainy season when transportation became challenging.
He expressed gratitude to the government for undertaking the project, noting that the improved road network will enhance mobility, boost economic activities and improve the overall quality of life for residents in the area.
The construction of the Tapo–Lulambo road is expected to strengthen rural connectivity and support the government’s efforts to promote inclusive development across Western Province
