Manhunt for Mbala hit and run perpetrator heightened

Police in Mbala District in Northern Province have appealed to the public for any information that would lead to the arrest of the person involved in a hit and run road traffic accident that left a six-year-old girl seriously injured.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda says the accident involved an unidentified motorcycle travelling from Mbala Town towards the Mbala–Mpulungu Junction.

The accident occurred around 11:00 hours on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in the Zesco compound area along Tafuna road.

Mr Mulonda has since identified the victim as Natasha Bwalya of Zesco Compound who sustained cuts on the head, a swollen upper lip, bruises on one hand and general body pains.

Mr Mulonda added that the child was later rushed to Mbala General Hospital, where she remains admitted and is receiving treatment.

He said preliminary police investigations indicate that the rider allegedly lost control of the motorcycle due to excessive speed before striking the child as she crossed the road from the eastern to the western direction,” he said.

“Any information provided, however small it may seem, could prove crucial in bringing the offender to justice,” said Mr Mulonda.

Police have also urged all road users, particularly motorcycle riders, to observe speed limits, exercise caution and comply with traffic regulations, to help prevent avoidable road accidents.
