The United Party for National Development (UPND) has welcomed former independent parliamentary candidate Don Mwenda back into the party ahead of the August 13 General Election.
Mr Mwenda had contested as an independent candidate after the UPND adopted Chrizoster Phiri as its parliamentary candidate for Kabwe Central.
Speaking at a press briefing, UPND Acting Kabwe District Chairperson Ahmed Lubinga said Mr Mwenda’s return would strengthen the party’s campaign efforts and consolidate support in Kabwe.
Mr Lubinga said the party had also lifted the suspensions of 13 members who were previously disciplined for supporting Mr Mwenda’s independent candidature.
“We welcome him back and we are ready to work together for the greater good of the party and the country,” Mr Lubinga said.
He added that the return of independent candidates who had previously left the UPND in various parts of the country would help reduce internal divisions and strengthen grassroots party structures.
Meanwhile, Mr Lubinga dismissed reports of defections from Kawama Ward to the opposition.
He said the reported defections were stage-managed and involved individuals who were not recognised members of the UPND.
Mr Lubinga maintained that the party’s structures in Kawama Ward remain intact and that the UPND continues to enjoy growing support in the area.
He also urged political parties to conduct peaceful campaigns and avoid actions that could lead to violence during the election period.
Mr Lubinga further expressed concern over alleged threats directed at civil servants by opposition leaders, assuring public workers that their jobs were secure and that no one would be victimised for supporting government programmes.
He called on Zambians to assess political parties based on their policies and development record rather than campaign rhetoric.
