The Bemba Royal Establishment has directed traditional leaders under its jurisdiction to remain non-partisan, during the campaign period, ahead of the August 13, 2026 general elections.
The guidance follows an Extraordinary Icilye ce Lamfya held at the Chitimukulu palace in Mungwi district, where members of the Royal Establishment met to discuss the preservation of the dignity and integrity of the institution of the Bemba traditional leadership during the election period.
In a press statement made available to the media in Kasama today, by Secretary to the Mwinelumbe Chitimukulu, Richard Mukuka, the Royal Establishment says while subjects are free to belong to and campaign for political parties of their choice, traditional leaders should remain non-partisan.
“Chiefs and other royals must remain impartial and should not endorse or publicly align themselves with any political party or alliance,” The Establishment stated.
The Establishment adds that maintaining neutrality will safeguard the integrity of the institution of chieftainship and uphold its role in serving all the people, regardless of their political affiliation.
It has further emphasised that its long standing policy of working with the government of the day should not be interpreted as support for the ruling party, adding that all political parties are welcome to campaign freely in UluBemba in line with Zambia’s democratic principles.
