Freedom fighter unhappy over Mwanawasas proposed burial site

Share

A former freedom fighter, Mpundu Mutembo, has appealed to government to rescind its decision to bury the late President Levy Mwanawasa at his Palabana farm.

Mr. Mutembo says Dr. Mwanawasa should be buried at a known common site because he died whilst on duty.

He said an official burial site for distinguished Zambian men and women should be identified.

Mr. Mutembo told ZANIS in an interview in Kasama today that burying Dr. Mwanawasa at his Palabana farm will not do because such a move amounts to hiding away Dr. Mwanawasa from Zambians and other people that might want to be visiting the burial site.

He said the burial site of a person such as a president should be a national memorial site which is accessible to all Zambians and the world at large.

Mr. Mutembo, 74, who resides in Mbala in the Northern Province, became a symbol of national heroes on 31st December, 1963 at the age of 30 when he was sculptured to reflect national heroes. His statue presently stands in front of the Government Complex building.

Meanwhile, Chief Chibesa Kunda of the Bemba people has said the successor of Dr. Mwanawasa should be principled as Dr. Mwanawasa was a principled man.

He said the country has lost a sober and disciplined man who endeavored to propel national development.

He said Dr. Mwanawasa worked tirelessly to uplift the living standards of the people Zambians.

Government has announced that President Mwanawasa will be put to rest on September 3, at his Palabana farm.

  1. I thought so too, since he was a Republican President, he should be buried on Public Area. Besides he died as an imcumbant President. Anyway nipa zed pano, things happen as they please and at their own discrection.

  2. hey, burry him somewhere where all zambians will have access, besides, he can be a national munument, First zambian president to die for zambia” (while serving.

  3. Well said ba Mpundu ba shikulu, however, Levy’s wish according to his will was to be buried at his Palabana farm! Let’s respect his own wish and do as he said. Regardless of our opinions, Levy’s wish should be paramount..!

  4. IT IS SO GOOD AND INSPIRING THAT WHAT I HAVE BEEN THINKING IN MY HUMBLE HEART,HAS ACTUALLY COME OUT FROM A DISTINGUISHED FREEDOM FIGHTER.LATE LPM WAS NOT JUST A PRIVATE CITIZEN BUT STATE PRESIDENT,IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER THAT HE BE BURIED WHERE THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA CAN HAVE FREE ACCESS,WHENEVER THEY WISH TO VISIT THE GRAVE,WITHOUT BEING CHARGED FOR TRESPASSING ON PRIVATE PROPERTY.IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO IMPRESS UPON BA MAUREEN AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS THIS WISH OF NOT ONLY BA MPUNDU MUTEMBO BUT MANY MANY ZAMBIANS.SEE WHERE KENYATTA,NYERERE,KAMUZU,TAMBO,ETC ARE BURIED.JOHN KENNEDY WOULD HAVE PREFERRED TO BE BURIED AT THE FAMILY HYANNIS PORT,BUT HE IS RESTING AT ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY.

  5. # 8. Agree with you.

On a separate note or rather related

I hear Sata has been chased. Him also. He made the government pick up his medical bill whilst he is sitting on money. Why didn’t he pay for himself when he was evacuated to RSA for medical treatment? Instead he let the government use our tax money. Today he has hired a plane or does he own it? in order to accompany the funeral procession.

  6. I hear he left a will to that effect that he should be burried at palabana and I also heard him mention it when he was compaigning for silvia masebo. But I agree with the freedom fighter and the above bloggers. with the behaviour of madam maureen, I wonder if we’ll ever have access to our hero Levy at the farm

  7. and what if bush jr decides to attend the burial, does the government expect him to be subjected to all those bumpy roads in chongwe? now i understand why these guys dont come to zambia

  8. Its only right for the President to be near his people, BRAVO to the old wise man. Ba Na K please shed more light on the Sata issue is it serious.

  9. I hear she even sat on the chair reserved for RB and also beat up her sister. It’s commotion now. Don’t be surprised when she contests the Presdency.

  10. Well, there is a lot of sense in what the old man has said, i mean here in the US and other develped countries that seems to be the trend and people are very patriotic about these things… However the man made his wish before he passed so this has be be honoured…. Now did Maureen directly tell Sata to leave or did someone say this on her behalf???

  11. is it true that sata has been chased by maureen?bt ba mudala ba sata why folow the body like that? is he not just campainging now?

  12. # 16 ESK; be rest assured that she can never have my vote. And why did have to sit on RB’s sit.
If LPM left a will then we have no right to bury him anywhere apart from where he wished to e buried.

  13. Sata also. He made the government pick up his medical bill whilst he is sitting on money. Why didn’t he pay for himself when he was evacuated to RSA for medical treatment? Instead he let the government use our tax money. Today he has hired a plane or does he own it?

  14. is it true that sata has been chased by maureen?but ba mudala ba sata why folow the body like that? is he not just campainging by following the body?

  15. I dont think there are ristrictions in mourning the dead. The bible says when someone dies you should mourn, cry etc. It is very unfortunate that such a thing has happened. Even if it is for political reason, why should it matter.I feel MMD is fielding maureen

  16. #12 hope its not true, coz this maureen and sata chipata news woulds spoil the unity thus far observed during the funeral… sad reading mweee… LPM publicly reconciled with sata so why should maureen even behave like this… pray its not true

  17. In line with what the old man has said, i suggest Heroes Square in front of Cabinet office can do or that space opposite freedom statue in Kamwala can be utilised for that purpose. Zeddians, what do you think ?

  18. But this woman! She sat on the Vice Presidents chair? Hmmm…..For her sake, she had better not stand for presidency. Tomorrow is the closing date for all names to be submitted for all those wishin to contest for presidency in MMD. I just hope she has been concentratin on mournin our late beloved President and not making plans of contestin! Cant wait to hear who is in the race.

  19. IMWE THE CABINET DID WANT LPM TO BE BURRIED IN LUSAKA ON AN OPEN SITE COZ HE DIED WHILE HE WAS PRESIDO BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT MAUREENIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII MAUREENIIIIIIIIIIIIIII CAME UP WITH PALABANA..ALA BE CAREFUL WITH THAT LADY KA…STAY TUNED!!!!

  20. The national term which parished in Gabon was buried at the independence stadiaum ,why the team was doing nation duties. I think even our late LPM should be buried at a place which is central because the people will have restictions to go to farm after burial .Sata is a victim, but the same Sata rejected will rule after 90days , HH you know this fact.CHINSALI MP 2011 where are you my cousin

  21. Every sensible person makes a WILL,it tells what should be done to him or her after death,it also says what should happen to ones property etc so not obeying ones will is total stupidity.Levy chose to be buried at his farm called Palabana so sensible people have accepted that wish so no matter what people say,Levy’s final resting place is Palabana.Despite being President,he too had a family and led a normal life after work,he was not owned by Zambians.

  22. I have been proposing a Heroes park to be identified where all future presidents and other distingusihed heroes would be burried.. I already know of independence stadium to have been ideal near the gabon Victims

  23. I support elder Mpundu Mutembo. This will when it was written our Pres. did not think of passing on while at State House. Unless if it was clearly stated, otherwise. Out of respect and appreciation the Zambian people have shown I pray this be considered and put the remains of our beloved president at the Heroes site where even the foreign digenitaries could visit easily. If only he could see how broken the people of Zambia are and shown the appreciation of his services and sacrifice to even while serving Zambia and Southern Africa as a whole. MHSRIP

  24. Obviously he thought he was not dieing anytime soon thus requesting that he be buried at Palabana. He’d have wanted things to be done right so lusaka is just the best option since he was still in office. Palabana would only apply after 2011 after leaving office. Just my reasoning!

  25. #29 Anonymous, uphold the respect i have for you. Where is heroes square ? Maanda hill shopping complex is built on graves, What effects has it got to the public ? Which ghost are you talking about ? Be realistic old brother……

  26. The will says Palabana.so it stays
Naye Sata chikwela,he had two days with Levy’s corpse.he still wants more tym,wat does he want from it?

  27. We have tortured him by parading him around the whole country to a point where even his sworn enemy Satana started following the corpse around laughing and spitting on it. Please Zambians, let his family take over after the country round trip to moan in peace. Besides, after KK (for clearly personal reasons) ordered Mundia to be buried in Leopard’s Hill as opposed to his home village (kwa Namatindi, kuli kambe neluzoba apeha bo Nalumino kuli cwale lubone) he started dreaming ‘musiyaleni foo MaLozi even where there were no Lozis. So me, I do not want to be haunted, let them take their Levy to Palabana.

  28. The old man is dead right. You are dead right mdala.
Mwanawasa is a public figure and belons to zambians, therefore they, throgh their representatives must decide where he should be burried.
    Fantastic suggestion mdala.

  29. Bane, LPM was President to all Zambians, whether UPND,PF,MMD,and those other small political parties that exist by name, he was our President.

Bashikulu bampundu has said it,even those of us far away would want to see LPM’s last resting place and pay our respects….now PALABANA???GOING through the former first lady (MAUREEN) would be a bit too much for us……seeing that she is even chasing mourners attending LPM’s funeral…IKASHUPA

  30. Sata’s behaviour is disgusting and wholly tasteless, you really wonder what he wants with a corpse of a man he could not see eye to eye with in the living years. When Miyanda was still vice president, Sata was once caught ready handed on camera in the dead of the night ‘chintako’ loitering in Godfrey’s cabinet office. Miyanda was so riled, summoned Sata and seriously assaulted the Nwacusa. So, given his ‘dark side’, I would not be suprised his motives are devious and Maureen has ‘seen’.

  31. Munamuhulu (Old man)you have a point, but its too late! Satana is a chancer and an embarassment to the entire world

  32. Just take him to his farm after all more important people like simon kapwepwe are buried at their farms. The man was in love with palabana and remember thats where the evil Maureen will also lie and possibly the would be new husband to maureen. Maureen this is not the right time for politics take it easy and hold you chimutunta.

  33. Ba Sata ba mudala you an embrassment… why follow the body all over Zambia kwati Nidonshi?Who are Sata’s advisors? This is the man some pipo are looking to to be the next presido.God save Zed.

  34. Mwanawasa was a Lawyer and Died testate. Let his wish be upheld.
If Zambians loved him they can visit his burial site. How many monuments do we have aournd the country? do people still go there? the answer is YES YES.

  35. Mwanawasa was a Lawyer and Died testate. Let his wish be upheld.
If Zambians loved him they can visit his burial site. How many monuments do we have Around the country? do people still go there? the answer is YES YES.

  36. We need to creat a location that can also serve as an attraction for visitations. I am sure tourists especially those coming from outside the country will want to extend their site seeing in Zambia to this burial site. Its a pity we do not have a large open Park/space in Lusaka. We dont even have a good Town Hall to talk about in Lusaka.

  37. Even if Mwanawasa said he should be put at palabana farm,it really doesn’t matter if we changed that. After all he is dead..He wont know…

  38. Though the late President requested to be buried at his farm this may only have happened if his passing on was when his term of office had come to an end. Since his death has occurred whilst in office and national duty, government should no-longer consider his request, the late President should be buried at designated burial site for our hereos and not at a private farm

  39. I AGREE QITH THE OLD MAN ,LOTS OF SENCE AND WISDOM,AM WONDERING WHAT THE GOVERNMENT S TAKE ON THE SITUATION IS,THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRM AND MADE A DISCISION TO ESTABLISH A NATIONAL SITE,OFCOURSE WITH RESPECT OF THE FAMILY.HE WAS OUR LEADER AND HIS BURIAL SITE SHOULD BE ACCESSABLE TO THIS SUBJECTS

  40. Sata ejected from body viewing late Levy’s body in Chipata
    Posted on August 25th, 2008

There was confusion at Chipata Airport in Eastern province this morning when opposition Patriotic Front (PF) leader, Michael Sata, was ordered to leave the body viewing ceremony of the late President Levy Mwanawasa.
The visibly disturbed Mr. Sata was seen being escorted by security officers away from the ceremony shortly after the arrival of First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa.
Mr. Sata said in an interview as he was leaving the airport that Mrs. Mwanawasa did not assent to his presence and attendance of the ceremony.

  41. Now that I have copied and pasted what happened at the airport, you can read for yourselves that it actually was the “Security” people who’d asked him to leave and NOT Mrs. Mwanawasa. Being the bully that he is, he must have gone to her to intervene and asked if he was invited to the ocassion in Chipata.

My fellow Zambians, at a time like this, please let’s respect the First Lady while she’s in mourning, even if you don’t think much of her. We are peaceful loving people, that’s how we’re known around the world. For some of you to hurl such language at her is in complete distaste. Let’s build on the legacy we already have as Zambians and stop the irresponsible writing.

  42. . CJO …you foolish Ba sata was not wrong but stupid Maureen.dont say this …..

Brovo Maureen you did well what did he want and why follow the body where ever it is taken.

  43. #4 You shou;d have had access to his hospital bed side, that would have made sense. Anyway i hope they give you keys to his coffin, cause then you have access to hold discussions with the *****

  44. #62 Betty was the first lady, Maureen is third lady just like her dead husband was not first Presido kikara ut number 3 iwe kikara

  45. i disagree with him being burried at apublic place cuz even his excellency ba chiluba and ba kaunda and any upcoming presidents will also ask to be burried there and they’ll be no space and it’ll jus be cumbersome seriously africa and their witchcraft and others with their phobias of the grave uh uh bad idea

  46. # 65, so called Anonymous – I won’t even bother parading your stupidity here by explaining “First Lady”. It just goes to show how far you’ve been in school. Get a life!

  47. Kwena # 65…. for real you have not been to school! Bravo to you # 62, you are wise in what you have said about us Zambians. Unfortunately not everyone will take heed about what you’ve said because they’ve never been in a situation like Madam Mwanawasa. If at all any of the other people in this forum have ever lost a loved one, they wouldn’t write such a whole lot of bull! God Bless the Mwanawasa’s and may H.E. Dr. Mwanawasa Rest In Eternal Peace.

  48. Where have you all been? I received a memo on the 19th saying that the president shall be buried at Embassy Park…
Speaking of delayed action, catch up, we need to be on the same page!!!

  49. I agree with the one who says he should be buried at his farm but it is too late, the govt has already decided otherwise his wish should have been respected. People like simon Kapwepwe are buried at their farms. After all Maureen takwata umuchinshi aikala pa cipuna ca ba kulu muchifulo ni widow, atamfya nabakulu she is a widow in style ha ha

  50. He should be burried at his farm. where his closest and dearests could visit in peace and quiet. phew!!!! its dust to dust and ashes to ashes thats it.

  51. BRAVE #65&#68 THIS Anonymous IS RETARDED, LEVEL OF EDUCATION ZERO,DIGNITY ZERO, INTELLIGENCE -15,I AGREE WITH #48&#52,READ BEFORE YOU COMMENT…WHY SHOW YOUR IGNORANCE IN PUBLIC.WHATEVER PLEASES THE WIDOW THUS WHAT WE GO FOR, SHES THE ONE THAT NURSED HIM,YOUR PARTNER WILL DO THE SAME TO YOU WHEN YOU DIE,,,WITH OR WITHOUT THE WILL THE DEAD KNOW NOTHING IN THERE STATE, SO THE LIVING HAVE TO FIND WHAT WORKS FOR THEM AND WE CARRY ON FROM THERE……..
