Sata calls for PF- UPND indaba

Mr. Michael Sata has called for an indaba between PF and the Hakainde Hichilema-led United Party for National Development (UPND) to have a collective agreement on the way forward, especially on a plan to defeat the MMD government.

Speaking on Sky FM Radio in Monze yesterday, Sata said there was need for interaction and exchange of ideas between the leadership of UPND and PF.

“All I am appealing to my brothers and sisters all over the country, I  have put a proposal publicly today, if we have to have anything meaningful, the entire 22 members of parliament from UPND and our members of parliament from PF our Central Committee, the National Management Committee of UPND, we must have an indaba” said Mr.Sata

“But if Michael Sata agrees, yes, I am going to be in the background and comrade Hakainde becomes president .  I have once had that same thing, we agreed with the Catholic church – ZEC, CCZ, EFZ, NGOCC, Women for Change that unless we amended the NCC to suit the people of Zambia we will not go to NCC. My 22 members of parliament defied and went to the NCC because there is money. Our colleagues in UPND at first said they will not go but they went but it doesn’t matter…I need this time a collective agreement between UPND and PF, not between Michael Sata and Hakainde Hichilema.”

He was commenting on numerous appeals from listeners for the PF and UPND to join hands if the MMD was to be dislodged during the October 30 presidential election.

“What I want is that what we agree is not just for the two of us but an agreement for the people who are the representatives of the people who are the owners of PF and UPND,” Sata said.

Sata further said he was the only person who had president Levy Mwanawasa’s vision because the two had a two-hour discussion and during that meeting the late president told him about his vision.

“I am very devastated because as far I am concerned the differences I had with Levy are behind us and it is me today in Zambia the only person with Levy’s vision,” Sata said. “If I would have been a Michael Sata of yesterday, I would have revealed what plans he had for some of his ministers. But we talked, he is not here, he did not implement what we discussed so therefore I don’t have to talk about it.”

  2. Sata should stand as presdo and HH as vice to gain some experience. Then 2011, Sata should hand over to HH as presdo. This should work well for Zambia.

  5. HH should only agree to this pact if Sata agrees to be in the background and let HH stand as the presidential candidate under the PF-UPND pact. Anything short of that will be just another political manouvre under the cobra’s sleeves and HH should not fall for it. One thing about sata is that he knows how to work the crowd by talking about what people want to hear. Note that he was making these comments in Monze, HH’s stronghold. I wouldnt be surprised if he gave a different story in another part of the country. But HH should tread carefully around king cobra, if he blinks even for a second he will be swallowed by the snake, and Zambia will be doomed. I really have a tough time trusting Sata

  9. This is ok as long as it is left to representatives of both parties to discuss this. The MMD will never be removed as long as these two parties don’t come to an agreement. In he last elections the combined votes of these two parties were far much more than what the MMD had in most areas. Come on people WE WANT CHANGE. Don’t be scared of change. If PF is proposing that Sata will hand over power to HH in 2011 then UPND should run for their lives NOW becoz Sata is just using them to win HH’s vote and go into plot 1. Once the cobra enters state house he will not be easy to get out of there (I wouldnt be surprised if even his corpse refused to leave plot 1). Plus apart from being a deadly snake, sata is sick mwebantu. How many presidential funerals and bye-elections are we going to subject ourselves to?   12. This is the way to go Ba Sata. However, dont look at this pact as just a way to dislodge the MMD. The issue is being able to deliver to the Zambian people afterwards. We believe that together you people can deliver. Just humble yourselves and come up with a force that is viable to the well being of the nation and Zambians.     SATA and HH going into a pact is non-starter.
    Havent you heard that Mugabe and Tsvangirai are trying some possible agreement?
    That agreement cant work, because those two guys are extremly different. Each one is looking for his own advantage, especially the older one.
    In the same way, SATA and HH can’t get together because both want to be president. Each want to use the other for his own adavntage.
    SATA is a clever man and HH knows that, and so he’ll put very strict conditions in his advantage.
    SATA also know the “younger man” is tricky, and will also put terrible conditions in his favor, and this is what we call “dealock”.

  34. Sata’s proposal is good as it is the only way we can remove the mmd from power. As the saying goes ‘united we can win and divided the mmd wins’. I sugest Sata works in the background as he says and HH leads. After all sata will still be instrumental in this pact and HH will blend his economic know how with sata’s experience. All we need is these two to work together for a better zambia, lets not strain sata’s health by overbardening please!

  49. HH should not allow himself to be tricked by Sata the same way Mwai Kibaki tricked Raila Odinga in Kenya. If Sata is truthful about this pact business, let him support the candidacy of HH who has more to offer than 71 year old Sata and 72 year old RB combined.   73. This pact is good news. If i was HH, I would take it and follow it to the rules. If Sata turns around, there is 2011 and his credibility would have gone and a good man never lose. He/she can be dribbled but ultimately truth catches up.
    Among issues which should be hammered should be. Sata can stand as Presidential Candidate and if he wins, The vice Presidency should go to UPND( Not necessarily HH).
    They should also state clearly that, they are going to retain some of the hardworking ministers in MMD for continuity till 2011. in mind is Magande, Mutati, Masebo, Konga..and those which may be fit to be considered.

I believe that the two parties and presidents will not in their wildest imaginations dislodge the MMD with its state machinery behind them.     The people there have vowed that they will never entertain him. Can Sata be a good leader, an all embracing Zambian leader? Clearly in these words there is demeaning of other groups. Let’s vote for people who will add meaning to our lives not ones that will merely tickle us into laughter.

  326. GREAT IDEA that Sata and HH should work together. I would really love that and no doubt it would add a few more years to my life-span due to happiness. UNFORTUNATELY, both of them are power hungry, dictatorial, and ruthlessly eyeing the presidency. If they come together in a deal, it will be a matter of who blinks first…and then sparks will start flying. So, ladies and gentlemen, as much as it sounds like a deal made in heaven, it will never happen because it cannot work. HH’s team can never let Sata lead them, and vice-versa. If PF and UPND have something to say, have a vision, then why cant they convince the people? We are talking about the future of our country not just about who is going to reside at plot no1. If this pact comes about then it means that our hard won democracy is not maturing. For me, I would love to see the day when the people of Southern Province vote for Sata because they believe and support his vision for the future of the country.
