Zambia has continued to record positive macro-economic growth

Share

Government says the country has continued to record positive macro-economic growth.

Finance and National Planning Minister Ng’andu Magande says this is despite the country experiencing external pressures from the rising oil and food prices.

Mr. Magande pointed out that prudent and fiscal management of resources have helped the country to record positive macro-economic policies.

He said this in Lusaka today when he launched three reports that included the 2008 African Economic Outlook, The 2007 African Development Report and the 2005 International Comparison Programme for Africa (ICP-Africa).

He said although the country has experienced unprecedented growth in the national economy, there was however need for government to devise effective mechanisms that will help to sustain the country’s positive economic performance.

Mr. Magande cited the adverse weather conditions, power shortages, appreciation of the Kwacha and the high cost of doing business in the country as some of the things that government needed to work on in order to sustain the economic growth rates.

Earlier, African Development Bank Resident Representative Vivienne Apopo bemoaned the high unemployment rate and shortage of training skills in Africa.

Ms Apopo, who further called for the implementation of training policies, said there is an urgent need to put in place policies that would facilitate training and skills transfer in an effort to build an enabled labour force in Africa.

She said that the move will play a crucial role in enhancing development in Africa.

Ms Apopo has since urged African governments to put in place effective measures aimed at prudently managing of resources with a view to uplifting the living standards of people in Africa.

  1. Economic growth world wide is the most viable sustainability. Look at Zimbabwe, economic shambles! VOTE RB. SATA will turn Zedi into another Zimbabwe!

  2. What macroeconimic growth do they talk about. Unemplyment levels are at record high levels, we consume much more than we produce hence importing. We have not developed any competitive advantages over other nations at all.

  3. this is very encouraging………we shud remember that zambia is coming from a very very lower economic base hence even growth of 7 percent over ten years will not necessarily have a meaningful impact on the poverty levels. zambia with the current level of growth over the last 7 yrs has been building capacity. ie infrastructure……… realistic growth only comes about when a country has moved from capacity building growth stage to wealth creation stage. however it has to be countinued over a long period of time to see any reward.

  4. cont….. i am an economist and an MBA grad working in policy fornmulation in UK. i kw how things work. this is good news for zambia and the issues raised by the minister need to be adressed…. and on the whole with FDI’s coming in to Zambia, and with good fiscal policy zambia will stand on a good foooting. i hope this helps

  5. “He said although the country has experienced unprecedented growth in the national economy, there was however need for government to devise effective mechanisms that will help to sustain the country’s positive economic performance”

One of the mechanisms that has alluded our finance minister is to have ZRA cut on taxes for borrowers. So if you get a loan you are paying loan tax and your everyday taxes. Why do people think he is so wise, the economy is really pressing us and GRZ mechanisms are still not living in the modern age.

  6. Being sold for salt:

Did you guys know that some mines make profits even before they start mining? Before Albidon started mining they had already sold nickel for the next 5 years to China and made enough to cover their costs of establishment plus profit. So if GRZ had enacted a “mechanism” to mine themselves we would bank all those billions. If you think know-how was a factor then you should realise that getting people who know how to do this isn’t a problem. There are thousands of people out there who know nickel-mining technology. Plz people get wiser. We must look damn to some of these investors. It’s like selling your people for salt.

  7. That Zambian living in Canada is lost and livig in the past. Which country on earth is self sustained? even USA import certai comodities. Please don’t show your ignorance in the media, visit Zambia and see for your self how most Zambins are building and buying flashy cars. Please give redit were its due. Yes we have a long way to go but the economic growth is vivid.

  8. Can only say keep at it, hence the need not to fall victim to populist politics. Vote for sustenance of continued growth of the economy.

  9. Hope he is not lying for the sake of campaigns. All of a sudden Magande is on news everyday, hope he is really doing a good job not just for the sake of his 2011 presidential ambitions.

  10. It’s funny how they are so few comments for such an important matter…putting aside the possibility that these statements by the minister are just political opportunism, this is good news. And I agree with #14 , populist tactics out we need continued economic growth…

  11. Poor Zambian, Look at the West and their friends, they tell us sell all the mines,Banks,Industries etc…….yet in the evening the convene a meeting to discuss their rescue plan………

Where are the Genious, those highly paid executives now

  12. Privatisation was just a disastor, when i think of it i cry,Zambian when are you gonna grow up, you sell the mines and yet reduce mineral taxes to benefit owners………

  14. Hey, this place is so boring.we are supporsed to talk about Zambia’s continued record of positive macro-economic growth……

  21. Thats great. These are the kinds of debate Zambians should but there minds on. lets show the world that we understand the micros and macros. Not debates on wife too young, sugar daddy, corruption etc useless staff. Let here way of cutting down inflation, cutting down government expenditure, GDP

  22. why so few comments here.. answer most zambians are dull. very good in insulting and sex talk. we love leaders that insults and talk nonse. look at the rallies. One leader has not spoken any sense about economy on his rallies. today he is talking about chiluba and RB. Very boring… RB and HH speak sense.. It makes sense to vote RB. Will give HH chance in future.. Look what lack of experience in politics did to a vibrant leader like Nevers

  23. ^^^Crying coz he finds he knows more about the economy than our future president. Guys have you been to Namibia? We are lagging behind claiming economic growth. The housing market is thriving and yet the GRZ is making little advancements toward ripping from it. Instead they just keep taxes high. They can get them from accomodating people like in the old days. The railway system is dying yet thousands of cars r coming in everyday. It’s money transporting such commodities by rail. And who wouldn’t want to reduce on car mirage?
