Share

Kariba dam

An Italian investor has invested US $10 million in the construction of a five star lodge in the remote Gwembe district of Southern Province.

The investor has also opened a game reserve in Chipepo area along Lake Kariba which has an assorted species of wildlife.

Managing Director of Kota Kota lodge, Sellicato Massimo, told ZANIS in Mazabuka today that his company has also employed over 60 local people at the lodge which is almost nearing completion.

He also said local companies have been empowered through contracts to ensure they benefit from the investment.

Mr Massimo said he is happy with the conducive atmosphere government has created for foreign investors to open up rural districts to development.

He observed that Gwembe district has massive pontential in tourism, adding that the rehabilitation of the controversial Gwembe-Chipepo road will open up the district to development.

Mr Massimo also urged government to expedite the rehabilitation of the broken down bottom road which is a major link with all the valley districts of Siavonga, Gwembe and Sinazongwe.

Meanwhile, Mr Massimo has pledged his company’s continued support to the education and health sectors by funding the rehabilitation and new construction of health facilities and classrooms.

He said currently he has funded the construction of a 1×4 classroom block at Mabula Basic School.

  1. Well done. We need investors who can improve the health and education sector as well not just reaping the country of its resources.

  2. This is what is supposed to be called investiment. Not when pipo just come and rent Utuntemba without putting up any proper infrustructure

  3. Ba sata bani dabwista lelo. Ati chinese are O.K. Of course he is telling lies. Given a chance SATA would chase all chinese. That is the core of his campaign and the kaponyas like that.

  4. this nice, for the people of gweembe, investment should not just be lsk but rural and remote areas,u bloggers who good at talking shud tek time off and vist some these resorts

  5. I am only concerned about the salaries/allowances this investor will be paying his employees.
We only hope that our zambian counterparts will be well compensated for the work they put in. A lot of people that have lodges do not pay their employees well. That is why we need a leader that can enforce the labour laws

  6. I was in Gwembe last month. I can’t believe this story. Have you guys been there. It’s so remote. They only have a tree near the council where you can pick Zain network. Well done man.

  7. Blogger(#38)you are right! These so called “infestors” give locals slave wages and externalise all the dollars racked in the businesses. They should also invest more in manufacturing industry and not these brothels.

  8. ..Good for the people of Gwembe and hey dont playa hate coz us Zambians dont invest..all we do is just spend on consumption especially alcohol..and dont blame the foreigners for paying their workers low wages, pin it on the labour laws..moreover how do Zambians pay their workers maka maka ma maids?

  9. It’s certainly good when this kind of investment flows to our country, however,it’s important that this investment is not just read about in the papers,it should be done in a way that creats jobs for the zambian people…..job creation is not evident to be coupled with the amount of investment we are reading about everyday.
and sata said he wellcomes chinese technology investment(which is wise of him) but does not wellcome chinese to mend pot holes and cook nshima in our markets coz that should be left for the poor zambian who’s struglling to make ends meat…..open youe ears mudala….

  10. Yanshi mwakwakitila ama porno, anyway we should develop our porn industry as well, what am saying is government should carefully monitor this lodges.

  11. Iwe Analume, the fact is we need better labour laws,do not try to justify something which is wrong……whether done by zambians or foreigners.and instead of just condemning the zambia consumer, try to pressure the gvnt to put up favourable investment conditions for the local investor and lower the cost of production and maybe, just maybe, we may have business minded zambians come out of their cocoons….
    Mwaumfwa Analume…….

    Mwaumfwa Analume…….landeniko ifyamano nomba…..

  13. Did they get a design of Lake Karibe? because that looks like Kariba dam and not the Lodge these guys built.
But LT has posted a wrong picture.

  14. ..Naufwa Ba kalamba..What i meant was we better labour laws first then we can have a solid case pressure the investors to adjust upwards..about our consumption, Ba Kalamba you can run away from the fact that we are careless spenders thats how come every other service or commodity is expensive relative to our neighbours..Tell me something, how do you a Rwandese refuge prosper in a country that he entered without any cent? I think its attitude more reliance on the guy to do you a favour..Hard work and sacrifice mummy..

  15. This is a welcome development my worry is on the poor electricity supply, its obvious this investment will be affected.

To my Tonga cousins, atleast you will be able to relax in this facility.

  16. Look, waking up every day to shout your lungs out for customers from cant be a job to be proud about especially that at theend of the day all monies earned are drowned in opaque beer.

I can tell you about how A GUY used to walk 25km to get to school every day and he is a corporate manager today.

This kaponya mentallity is very retrogressive AND NO ONE SHOULD BE PROUD of being one.

  17. #20 I agree. They seem to have built their lodge just like our Kariba dam. You can’t access the Kariba from Gwembe easily. You have to go back to siavonga which means going through mazabuka. 2-3hours drive. So it’s good they built such a lodge. The Gwembe cow-boys won’t be missing anything.

  18. I also know that there is Gold in the same area. What could have prompted them to get to Gwembe? Is it the good road network or nice health facilities?

  19. I have my own relatives who have CHOSEN to live that kind of life. They through away the books and ran away from school at will.

I am still seeing young men with relatively good family background going that way.

  20. The Kwacha has continued to depreciate. On Manday K 3,565 – K 3,670, today K 3,600 – K 3,730. Can some one in GRZ tell us what is happening. They are quick to speak when the opposite happens.

  21. It’s not Gold it’s Uranium. Unless they found Gold aswell but somehow I doubt they can be mixed. That would make an interesting mixture. Exploration and refining would be rough.

  22. It’s not Gold it’s Uranium. How can one mistake the 2. Unless they found Gold aswell but somehow I doubt they can be mixed. That would make an interesting mixture. Exploration and refining would be rough.

  23. I know Max. He started that project in early 2000s. It’s not new at all. They shouldn’t politicise it. He’s been spending money incrementally. The man is hard working and loves the bush. I am just glad to know he’s still there despite political interference during Chiluba’s era and shady links to some crooks from RSA. He showed us pictures of the Lodge and I have friends who’ve been there. His vision for the place is great. As for wages, only hope in the Labour laws. Otherwise it’s better than nothing.

  24. how many rooms does this hotel have? 10M cant buy many rooms. as for the wages – the blighters should be happy to get paid in cashewnuts. the real improvements are with the suppliers that benefit such as curio vendors, thatchers, suppliers of fresh veg etc.

  25. WE NEED INVESTORS WHO WILL COME UP WITH BEUTIFUL INFRASTRUCTURE AND PAY OUR PEOPLE WEL.OUR LABOUR OFFICE SHOULD REVISE THE MINIMUM WAGES TO SUIT OUR PIPO AND PUT THIS FORWARD TO THE INVESTORS AS PART OF THE CONDITIONS.ALLOW INVESTORS TO PARTNER WITH ZAMBIANS SO THAT WE BALANCE THE EQUATION.

  26. #38 Torontonian, is it not you who was quoted saying “the last person to leave Zed, please remember to switch off the lights”? You see how Zed is flourishing?

  27. #40 – i love Zed and hope it flourishes but there is a need for a radical change of attitude. $10M is nothing in FDI terms. A single lodge in the midst of poverty. When will we see billion dollar investments?

  28. Ken B(#35) you are a fool. Which other fool told you that Sata is going to close schools?

We don’t need such kind of people on earth who don’t think because they marry and multiply – increase the number of fools which is not good for mankind.

  29. Good news. And while we are at it somebody must be busy taking a fresh look at our labour laws to avoid slave conditions…..

Vote for Sata for Zambians to become economic refugees in Southern African neighbouring countries.

  34. This dreamer(#46) is still singing HH HH HH!

The man(HH) just can’t win an election. Managing a corporate entity and leading a nation of 11+ million people and 80% of them wallowing in poverty are two different things.

Your HH should start from somewhere in politics not straight to president (perhaps as finance minister). He has a lot more years to go!

  35. those investors where invited my a catholic priest who helped the contraction of the chirudu hospital they are more Italians coming he is a coordinator of all the Italians from Milan . the man is very exposed and he has the love of Zambia … i know him personally they mean to help they have also built a college in kafue St. Ambrose he also helped and sourced funds to build the new kafue District hospital which was opened last year

  36. No. 50: I agree with you 100%. Let HH be MP and/or minister so that we can see how well he can use his experience in the corporate world to run a ministry. If we are satisfied with his performance, then we will give the chance to run Zambia.

  37. This is waht we call development…this is for HH those of you chaps who din’t know!Viva Poor Luapula and Northern…we don’t need any development there !!those chaps are dull and don’t appreciate…

  38. Hhehhehhehhe.
Bemba this, Bemba that. Bemba-Tribalists (undereducated and normally exhibiting Kaponya mentality) and not well meaning Bemba Zambians, we are sick and tired of this nonsense!
“Abakali, tabalanda.” Statistics tell for themselves. October 30, 2008 will be the final verdict. Zambia Foward. Vote for “wamano, ni zi”.
“Ichidunu chilalisha, abaiche tababako.” – JK or someone (help).

  39. “An Italian investor has invested US $10 million in the construction of a five star lodge in the remote Gwembe district of Southern Province”.
He further said they have employed 60 locals?
Quote from LT, this is not a serious investment and Zed calculated
    Usd 10,000,000.00 to Kwacha equivalent.
Vote for H H, he has a plan for serious investors in Zed.

  40. MWIIYI WAKU MUSANZA, THINK LIKE SOMEONE WHO HAVE BEEN TO SCHOOL. DO NOT MISLEAD PEOPLE. IF YOU THINK HH IS THE MOST SUITABLE CANDIDATE FOR YOU, ITS YOU THINKING AND NOT EVERYONE. I WISH YOU COULD COME AND WITNESS THESE ELECTIONS. YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE HH YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IS NOT EVEN FAMOUS HERE IN ZAMBIA. HOW DO YOU VOTE FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS NO EXPERIENCE. NO IDEA ON HOW THE GOVERNMENT SYSTEMS OPERATE. PLEASE LEAVE WE INDIGINOUS ZAMBIANS TO VOTE WISELY. YOU ARE OUT OF THE COUNTRY BECAUSE YOU RAN AWAY B’COZ OF THE BAD CONDITIONS OF SERVICE. IF YOU HAD A HEART FOR YOUR COUNTRY ZAMBIA, YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED BEHIND AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS COUNTRY.

  41. MWIIYI WAKU MUSANZA, NOW THAT YOU ARE AWAY, PLEASE PRAY FOR MOTHER ZAMBIA THAT WE ELECT A PERSON WHO CAN TAKE THIS COUNTRY FOWARD, SOMEONE WHO HAS A VISION FOR THIS NATION. TALK LIKE A MATURED ZAMBIAN LIVING ABROAD. THANK YOU.

  42. #56,57.I am on National Duties. I will be back in time, by God’s grace. Do not worry about me much now because I am for both PF and the UPND. You will see my changed strategy from today onwards. I will ignore the Bemba-Tribalists and seek the PF and UPND to woork together to remove the MMD from Power. Zambia and all Zambians, here we go. Viva HH and Viva Sata.
Brothers and Sisters, we only have one Zambia to develop. Let us now move on together as ONE.

  43. #56,57. I tell you the truth my fellow Zambian Citizen that I have not ran away from HOME andwill never ran away from my Great country and nation. Seriuosly, I am on National Duties. I will be back in time, by God’s grace.

  44. #59 former maestro he he..i cnt believe u hav said tht..im impresd, zed pipo we dnt nid to segrepate against ourselves..today i saw upnd mp for mazabuka tok abt mr munkombwe’s politics of insult against hh and sata, tht was a gud observation rili

  45. Enoch kavindele, why do u need to know how many pipo use internet cafe.r u 4geting that we r all not woven 4rom the same cloth,so if u come 4rom a rich family and can afford the net,gud 4 u and ur family.GOD BLESS U SON

  46. Brothers and Sisters in the ubwato. I call upon all of you to emulate what I have done and join hands to move our only great Country Zambian in the real forward direction. Lets us all come together. It doesnot matter whether you will remain loyal to the PF (Progress Finders) or the UPND (United Progressive Nation Developers). We are all Zambians by blood and diversity in culture. Let us all advise HH and Sata to come together and sit for a serious meeting to move Zambia forward. KK (Super Kenny) is welcome too to the possible indaba. Please, HH and Sata ndakomba, napapata, coem together. We can all shame the devil. We have one common MMD to remove from power. I am signing off.

  47. AS LONG AS ALL ZAMBIANS CAN HAVE A CORROLLA IN THEIR GARRAGE A COMPUTER IN EVERY ZAMBIANS HOME,CHICKEN IN EVRY ZAMBIANS POT,A SWIMMING POOL IN EVERY ZAMBIANS YARD,THEN WE WOULD HAVE VOTED 4 THE RIGHT ONE,SO MY FELLOW COUNTRY MEN LETS VOTE WISELY

  48. #63, thanks. I am now back as Maestro Hhehhehhehhe from “Mwiiyi waku Musanza”. Brothers and Sisters, let us move Zambia in the forward direction. This is now not about HH or Sata. This is about removing the MMD which has failed Zambia and Zambians for more than 17 years now.
Hon. Sata may be old and its true he had a heart-attack, but let us convince Sata to leave politics gracefully. We can do it. It is not too late.
Viva HH and viva Sata. I am now humbly asking Sata and HH to come back to Sata’s proposed PF-UPND indaba. Sata ran way from KK’s meeting to bring HH and Sata together, but that does not matter now. I am urging all well-meaning Zambians to advice these 2 great leaders SIT.

  49. #68 was meant to address #63 after I wrote that I was signing off on #66.
May our good Lord God bless Zambia. Untill the next time, this is Maestro Hhehhehhehhe. Now to UNITE all Zambians. Take care and please, have some great blogging. Bye for now.

  50. #50 and 52 you have shocked me you guys. Are you telling me that Kaunda and Chiluba started as MPs or what? You need no witchfinder to identify the best candidate for president besides HH. Think about tomorrow and not eating and destroying your pots and forgetting the future. Open your eyes and see. 11 million people is nothing for sound economic activities

  51. At least someone has discoverd potential in that neglected area.Point of correction lodges are not graded in Stars, stars are for Hotel.Am I meant to believe that this is a four star Hotel????

  52. Great Investment for a start. Thank also for the community development you have embarked on, Italian investor.

Brothers and Sisters, I have been kwa-Chaanga (1h30m drive from Chikankata road about 10km before Chikankata Hospital)all the way through to kwa-Sianyoolo (1h30m drive from Chaanga road about 5km before Chaanga Rural Centre). The mountains around that place glitter with what looks like precious stones. In fact, there is an old run-down in Chaanga area. So all those willing to invest in that area can go and survey it. By a motorbike, one can cover the distance to Sianyolo in 2 hrs. All the best as you travel across Zambia in search of uplifting people’s lives.

  53. I am just concerned, how is the landmine situation in the Gwembwe valley area, especially near to the Italian Investors new 5 star resort?

  54. Very good! we need more investments in the rural areas you know. Luapula province also has so much potential with all the beautiful falls.

  55. You do NOT need an investor to herd wildlife, build a lodge in the bush and make millions which he says he has invested. All that money, and more, has been made in Zambia. That’s what we investors do. Tourism must be designated as a restricted sector for Zambians only. You can do these things using loans which your gov’t must make available. Once again, we do NOT come to Zambia to develop Zambia, but to make money. Those who tell you that we are here for development want to use us as a scapegoat and fail to understand that development is gov’t’s responsibility; not investors’. We DO NOT bring development. We come to make money for economies and advancement of OUR OWN countries. Listen to me!

  56. Talking of development here, wouldn’t it have been a priority for GRZ to construct the Kazungula Bridge first than the Chembe Bridge(Sorry LPM Bridge). With all due respect to Luapulians but Kazungula now ranks number one in the economic lifeline of Zambia and shuttling pontoons from Luangwa to there only shows how wrong our priorities are. I don’t how economically viable the LPM Bridge is to that part of Zambia? Can someone shed more light on this.

  57. SOMETIMES I JUST WONDER HOW GOVERNMENTS PROGRAMMES ARE SET. MOST AREAS WHERE THE IRRIGATION SYSTEMS WORKS ARE AREAS WHERE THERE IS SCANTY WATER. LIKE SOME BLOGGERS ABOVE HAVE IRITERATED LUAPULA PROVINCE HAS THE POTENTIAL WITH PLENTY OF RIVERS AND WATERFALLS WHICH CAN BE USED IN BOOSTING TOURISM INDUSTRIES/ELECTRICITY AND AGRICULTURE.

  58. NO. 67 BUCKSHOT, WHAT WE WANT IN THIS COUNTRY IS; (1) A PRESIDENT WHO HAS A HEART AND FEEL FOR HIS POOR CITIZENS (BRING DOWN POVERTY LEVELS). (2) A GOOD SALARY FOR EVERY ZAMBIAN LOCAL EMPLOYEES WHICH WILL ENABLE ALL WORKERS TO BUY WHAT THEY WANT, SETTLE ELECTRICITY AND WATER BILLS/LAND RATES; PAY SCHOOL AND COLLEGE FEES FOR THE CHILDREN, AND ALSO SAVE A LITLLE. A CAR/COMPUTER/CHICKEN OR BEEF IN EVERY HOME NOT POSSIBLE B’COZ PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT PRIORITIES/CHOICES & TASTES. THANKX BROTHER.

  59. Hope rooms will be affordable to us local people. most of these hotels an avarage zambian spending a night in these places would mean not feeding your family for the whole month. Well done Investor, but we need ba sata to put more money in our pockets twacula please.

  60. AT LEAST ANOTHER LOCATION.AM SO TIRED OF LIVINGSTONE, SIAVONGA, LUANGWA ETC. MY HUSBAND AND BABIES WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT KIND OF ATMOSPHERE THIS FESTIVE SEASON. AM SO HAPPY.CANT WAIT TO SEE THE PLACE

  61. iwe # 79, if u want somone who will give u goog salary go for somone who has already so that he does not put all the money in his back porket……. so whoz dis man…………
    H.H of course.

  62. Zambia is unique among African countries in that it offers the best combination of political stability, breathtaking natural landscape, and tourist-friendly people. If Zambia’s tourism board handles things properly, visitors will flock here. To that end, this project will enhance Zambia’s appeal to foreign tourists, create jobs and bring in currency. Bravo!
