Elite Without Identity

Share

Three weeks ago Lusaka Dynamos, a team on the roll under Fighton Simukonda in the league in the latter period of the season, took to the pitch in an invitingly yellow stripe during a BP Top 8 Cup fixture.

However, the jersey was not Dynamos very own but a replica of Liverpool’s yellow away kit complete with the latter’s crest and endorsement of a famous beer brand from continental Europe.

Just when you thought we were in the one only place where we could escape and safely hide from the hype and neo-colonization of English football, than we witnessed in shocking yellow Dynamos churn out a poor substitute of Merseyside football.

Faz has yet to issue an statement official statement on the whole show.

Meanwhile. Dynamos went unabated on three occasions and in successive victories over Zanaco in local competitive action before their lucky streak run-out against Simukonda’s former side last Sunday losing 1-0 at their cramped Queensmead home ground.

For all the talent they have produced, good and bad over the years, Dynamos have failed to find an identity on the pitch to equal their reputation as one of Zambia’s football nurseries.

They have flirted with Manchester United replica shirts in the recent past and in the mid 90’s also donned Olympique Marseille colors.

A team of Dynamos stature and renowned self-reliance and in existence as a footballing institution for three decades must finally shed its genial exuberance for things foreign in football apparel find a soul and character to go along with its Elite status.

  1. Guys ba LT mulelembako bwino ichisungu mwe! Tulefwaya ukukonka story. Nevertheless Zambia will qualify for the World Cup and Nations Cup finals. There is no intimidating team in our group.

  2. We have beaten Egypt before, one time we whacked them 4-0 at their own homeground with Dick Chama as coach. Algeria are like South Africa, a spent force so we can win both their matches against us. Rwanda will be tough at home but when they come to Zambia we will hit them very hard.

  4. I couldn’t agree more with this article. I first saw the jerseys on the zambianfootball site and thought I was mistaken. This is not only a poor decision on the part of Lusaka dynamos but has legal implications should Liverpool sue them for unlicenced use of their merchandise. We expect better from Hanif especially him being a man thats well travelled and understands the rules of the game. There is only one Liverpool and one Lusaka Dynamos, lets respect that.

  5. As much as we respect Hanif Adams i think on this one he needs to be told off, this isn’t acceptable,am he can afford to buy other shirts that are even cheaper than the replicas his subjecting his team to use.

  6. Remember that Hanif does not have a youhth team he has built himself. He collects players from Chiparamba, EduSport, BSA and other community sports programs. I think we should start supporting the guys in chawama, Mandevu and other townships who spent time training these boys. Hanif only collects a finished product. Hijani, Yorum and other promising players have been brought up buy the guys in the township. I think Hanif should start putting back some money in his players and where they come from.

  7. a very good and insightful article (bravo LT)…….. it would have been nice if we had got a comment from the lusaka dynamos officials as well. nonetheless a refreshing article as the is more to life than politics.

  8. I am still urging Veep RBB and the whole MMD to endorse president HH before it is too late. Zambia can not afford to have Sata as Zambia President at this time. Let us convince Sata to sit for Grade 7, 9 and 12 exams before he can come back and contend the Zambian Presidency.
Countdown: 1 day 45 minutes remaining and we are counting.
I envision a Zambia whose people shall stand tall as PROUD persons instead of being timid due to lack of confidence and motivation. President HH has committed himself to serve Zambia to the best of his ability and so, let us endorse HH on Thursday so that HH can bring a better future to our children. Together, yes we can and we still have 1 full day to decide

  9. Why do we always focus on the negative? Did the authour of this article try to seek an audience with LD officials to understand why the team dons this kit?? We need better journalistic skills than this….

  10. hmmmm!! am a liverpool fan and would hate to be mistaken for being a lusaka dynamos fan or worse player. back home am a mighty mufulira wonderers fan inspite of pur recent misfortunes. however, we will be back mukuwina ichungulo. shame hanif and were is the FAZ?

  11. All you Kalu haters, can you ask this Mwisa Anif Adams to sort out the identity crisis at Lusaka Dynamos before he can continue with his unrealistic attempt to lead Zambian football as FAZ president. We don’t the our national team to be donning Man U or CFC jerseys if he was erroneously voted as the Don at Football House?

  12. this article has nothing to do politics,i wonder y pipo are toking about politics, its sad to see lusaka dyanamo put on jerseys of different clubs, anif adams as a soccer admins shud think about this seriously,if lsk dynamos was to tek part in continetal games wat are they going to wear.

  13. #9. Think man. Liverpool’s sponsors are getting free marketing with out paying Lusaka dynamos . Why would they sue them?. We have one sponsor for our league KCM they should be the ones worries\d about advertising, since a foriegn brand is getting promoted.

  14. This is a tip of the ice berg of the major gaps of sport in general in Zambia.

The limited resources, lack of insight into global trends and administrative capacity are just a few ingredients that make up the broth of the underdeveloped state of sport in Zambia.

LT that is a good observation, lets move forward with some concrete ideas, LD are not the only ones almost all the youth league teams all the way up to priemier league do not have much in terms of branding and identity.

LD are looking up to the European league for inspiration but i guess they took it too far.

  15. ITS NOW TIME PF AND UPND POOLED THEIR RESOURCES (VOTES) TO DISLODGE MMD. THIS IS THE CALL FROM EVERY WELL MEANING ZAMBIAN WITH INTEREST AT HEART TO DEVELOP ZAMBIA. WE ZAMBIANS ARE HUMBLY ASKING BOTH PARTIES TO BURY THEIR HATCHETS AND JOIN HANDS. WE DO NOT WANT MMD/UNIP AGAIN. THERE IS TOO MUCH POVERTY IN THE COUNTRY WITH ALMOST EVERYTHING. TO PUT IT SIMPLY, PF, UPND PLEASE PUT TOGETHER YOUR VOTES AND KICK OUT MMD. THANKS.
