Zambia today, joined the rest of the world in commemorating the world AIDS day.

Various activities took place throughout the country. In Kitwe celebrations were held at the Freedom Park to commemorate this years World AIDS day under the theme Leaders Keep the Promise to Stop AIDS. Copperbelt minister Mwansa  Mbulakulima took a swipe at some  civic organisations abusing financial and material resources from donors meant to address the plight of people living with HIV AIDS. Kitwe Mayor Councillor Divo Katete called on the Local Authority to come up with measures that would compel Councils to punish Bar owners who allow minors to patronises their drinking places.
Councillor Katete said the youths in Kitwe were at a higher risk of contracting HIV AIDS due to non restrictions on the age limit.

He said most of the drinking places in Kitwe were mostly patronised by the Youths hence the need to come up with a law that would punish all those that allow minors to patronise bars.

In lusaka, people from all walks of life matched from the University of Zambia great East road campus to Mulungushi International Conference Centre where activities to commemorate the day took place.

Addressing the gathering at Mulungushi International Conference Center Health Minister, Kapembwa Simbao, said Zambia has made significant progress in the fight against the pandemic.

Mr. Simbao said currently 2-hundred thousand people are on anti- retroviral treatment.

In Serenje  a woman living with HIV/AIDS called on men to encourage their wives to go for voluntary counseling and testing (VCT), to curb the spread of the epidemic in homes.

Speaking to ZANIS in an interview during the worlds Aids Day candle lighting memorial service at the United Church of Zambia (UCZ) in Serenje last evening, Ireen Nakamba said that it was important for husbands to encourage thier spouses to know their HIV status.

Ms. Nawakwi who narrated what she went through before discovering her HIV status, said most married women were at risk because they did not know their HIV status.

She said also encouraged people living with HIV/AIDS to adhere to the advise being given by different care givers to prolong their lives.

  1. we will fight it if we take it upon ourselves each to look after yourself and protect not only you but your neighbour..good place with the parable of the good samaritan..this is the modern day version people

  2. #3 thats dry, I dont call that a comment, say something that you are atleast sure of what you are saying. Its good to contribute, but with sence ofcourse. Think of something. Its very unfortunate that people are now using campeigns against AIDS as a way of making money, Why cant those small useless organisations just be banned, instead of wasting resource(money) on campeigns and organisations which do not even bring out positive results. I can’t blame those that are choping the so called “AIDS money” for what they are doing.

  3. Ours will be often refered to as the missing Generation. My heart go to all the people out their living with HIV/AIDS. Its not easy but its also not the end. Yes people misusing funds for good causes must be punished. May God bless Zambia.

  4. Its sad that out of a misfortune people have abused the trust and pocketed money. Africa has been destroyed by greed and selfishness.
Its also worth noting that poverty flies next door to AIDS, when people are poor they lack education and how to apply it to safe guard their lives.
Basic health programmes should be made availabe to people and teach them how to look after themselves.
I live in Aussie and I have never heard or seen a case of HIV/AIDS. People here hardly know what AIDS is, they think if someone has AIDS then they are gay coz thats the only group of people associated with AIDS.
I also think the type of AIDS virus found in Southern Africa is more severe than other types

  5. Just follow Jah commandments and you shall have no need to fear HIV. Most disease come as a result of man’s disobedience to de Almighty.

  6. Lets protect the innocent babies. I passed thru the Uth children section and i shed tears when i saw how babies re suffering, uth has even made it mandatory for each child taken there to under go Hiv testing. Its sad for the innocent babies.

  7. Let all of us who are sexually active, go for a test and know our status. Aids does not mean that one should give up and die carelessly. Aids is a condition that one can control if discovered that you have it. When you have it, use protection to stop re-infections, cut on the consumption of beer as it makes one to forget to take ARVs and compromises your immunity by making it poorer, stop smoking as there is no food value in a smoke, eat health as junk food is a source of harmful products that compromise ones health and also exercise regularly to put your body and organs in good health. So just get tested and when positive start topping up when the CD4 gets lower than normal.

  8. HIV/AIDS is very real. people should stop the negative attitude towards it. be real and stop pretending. its affecting us. its there its real. the only way we can fight it is to come in the open and comfront it head on, positive or negative. it is not a shameful disease and how one got it does not matter at all. lets have hearts of love and fight this together. some people got it through unfaithful partners, but at the end of it all that should not be the focus. the enemy here is HIV/AIDS. we will find it diffucult to address and fight it if we spend the time pointing and laughing at each other. those who steal monies for this worthy cause should be exposed if you know them.

  9. I wrote down a list of 29 names of people i knew in Zambia who died of Aids related diseases. I do not have any friends left in Zed they are all dead.
I do have a female relative who is a very very beautiful HIV+ sexworker in Lusaka.

  10. #13 you are brave to come out in the open.Eat healthy and take a lot of multi vitamins at least one a day.Its not the end of the world.I know people who have been hiv+ for the past 12 years and are not on ARVs,the just eat health.Impwa, bondwe, chibwabwa, chishungwa, kanuka, lumanda and most of our traditional foods are good because the do not contain chemicals.Soldier on my friend.God bless

  11. Kudos to you #17. Like you said it aint a death sentence so I just keep on going. Imagine you’re in a crowd at a football ground happily chanting chipolopolo in unison and then as soon as you announce that you’re +ve the whole ground goes silent, eerie deathlike silence. No pro comments no con statements… Thats what had happened last time I said it. We all like to discuss issues like HIV but as soon as someone within our midst is infected its suddenly nobodys business. That’s an attitude I am striving to change.
Thanks to all of you that bother to take note, we might some day overcome the stigma and subsequently the disease.
    THANKYOU.

  12. Those who stigmatise are not affected. If you are affected you can’t stigmatise.I always ask those who stigmatise if the know their status.

  13. This talk about HIV/AIDS is very real to some of us. I have my brothers and sisters who have got it and so many of my relatives of mine have died from it. I have a laugh at times but we encourage each other to take the medication and eat healthly. Its not a joke HIV/AIDS is real. I have never changed on how I treat my lovely bro and sisters or laughed at them on how they got the virus. By doing that I have given them hope and their are living and are happy and life is normal and they look health like any other person but before they knew their were HIV+ It was a sad story and each day was as if one of them was going pass away. Be blessed everyone who is HIV+

  14. I too have lost close realatives to HIV, in fact my beloved mother as well as her brothers were claimed by HIV. It is fear of the stigma that this condition carries that is claiming lives un-necessraly. If my mother had come and said what she was sufferrrung from, and had started taking medication, she would be alive today.
A lesson to all , be brave and also advise realtives to go for tests and if need be to start taking medication. This is not a desease to hide anymore. It is litrally on our door steps and in many cases in our homes.

  15. LT you said Ireen Nakamba first later Ms Nawakwi. Is it the same person or its Nawakwi the politician who is HIV positive. Please clarify.

  16. Thanks for the question toko #17.
Why must it always be an assumpion that behind the awareness campaign is a desire for something in return.
I do not want anything, I have been granted more than I can ask for, my life.
All I ask from the likes of you is help in whatever way(it doesn’ have to be monetary) to prevent the spread of the disease and reduce the stigma. Chapwa.

  17. #9 you are misinformed my friend, cases of HIV/AIDS and other STD’s such as gonorrheoa and syphillis are on the rise and a few individuals have contracted AIDS from here(Aussie) because it is rarely talked about and maybe only a ka small discreet ad at a time when most people are not in front of the tv. Another thing you should know is that people here have better access to ARV’s etc and live for twenty/thirty…years with HIV.As the ads say in Zambia you can’t tell by looking.

  18. What people forget is that if you are not infected you are affected. We like to think we are invincible but many people are suffering due to our self-righteousness.What does it matter how a person contracted the disease, what matters is what we can do to help them live a happy life.We claim to be Christians and yet when one of us succumbs to HIV we distance ourselves and behave very un-Christlike, why in a christian nation should someone be ashamed to share their status. We should not judge others least we be judged,we should be aiming to reduce the spread of HIV and helping those who have it,but we instead contribute to their demise

  19. How can Banda be an anti-AIDS advocate where he is the paramount enjoyer of ‘sansamukation’ especially with girls old enough to be his grand children? It is agony sure, Zambian politicians! Look at Sata, he was not even ashamed to call ‘sex from mufyani as good milile’ in parliament.

  20. I’d compare gettin infected to say a teenage girl having an unwanted pregnancy. It doesn’ mean that because she is pregnant then she is slutty, she just happened to conceive albeit while a whole host of her friends(even those condemning and shunning her)were also indulging in unprotected sex. It is always easy to find fault in the next person while overlooking our own short commings. Hunman kind just needs a complete overhaul/remake.

  21. Even when you are positive you can still live a positive life, unless you are having some financial difficulties.
I thought I was positive ,after finding uut that am negative , Iam learning to rest my ass

  22. We do not need money to stop AIDS, we need people to stop messing around. Stop multiple partners and do not commit adultery or fornication.

What is the money for? To pay the prostitutes so that they don’t earn the money via selling their bodies? To put cameras in dark corners so that unfaithful partners are exposed?

  23. good article but the second paragraph, part reads,…in kitwe cerebrations were held….,now what cerebrations?use correct words,yu cannot cerebrate the world’s aids day unless yu are a thief benefiting from funds meant fo the afflicted.plz use such phrases as match past blablabla…as fo those enriching themselves fron funds meant for aids victims,He who sees what is done in darkiness will squarely deal with them.riches acquired thru immoral means vanish like unpolished steel exposed to moisture..yu know what i mean.examples to be seen, plunderers!!

  24. My question is how come the developed countries are more sexually active but fewer HIV cases and yet Africa has been hit the hardest in fact sub saharan region. A comparative research needs to be done. I know people have been condemned for having HIV but i think it’s unfair when we compare the sexual activity with the developed countries which is higher and yet the rate of HIV is lower, we need to find a solution because the people who are dying could have contributed positively to Zambia and Africa. The developed countries’ citizens are alive and contributing to their country’s wellbeing. Let’s not be fast in throwing stones but let’s find a solution.

  25. contd. We need to find a way of keeping alive those that have been infected through the Government being able to supply ARV’s to everyone as we pray for their salvation and healing, and for those not infected yet we need to find a practical way of keeping them from infection as we preach the gospel of salvation to them.If we believe it is the Lord’s judgement then how come the developed countries are not being judged and it’s only africa, are we worse sinners. Let us be objective ,get knowledge and refuse any manner of deception. HIV/Aids is not from God. How come the developed countries are not being infected as much as Africa, are they more righteous.let us not be quick in throwing stones

  26. To Ze mule and all brothers and sisters
Its true that if you are not infected, you are affected. However, we forget one thing. The powers to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS does not rest up to the donnors and govrnment alone, but it is in you and I.
I hate to say it but sometimes–most times we are to blame for the things we bring to ourselves. Our lifestlyes we choose to live puts us at risk of not just getting the virus but also spreading it. But that does not mean that those infected should be subjected to all sorts of suffering they go through. They need protection and acceptance and also stand up and take control of their lives.
I encourage all of you to get tested and know your status

  27. My heart goes out for Ze Mule, You are strong and courageous, It has taken me years to come up in the open and say Im positive thou I have lived a very positive life with no ARVS my CD4 count has always been above 700 cos I eat healthy and live positively Stigma exists I have seen it even in my own family circles sometimes people pass a death setence on you when they hear you are not well then they pass silly comments so lets fight this stigma, we people with long lives like they are and I keep telling them that I might bury all of you you never know.

  28. If u are there busy building mansions using HIV money,my dear God is watching u.Mind u, well wishers are helping us so that we can fight this scourge and u are busy sending yo children to the UK using our money.God forbid!

  29. KEEP THE PROMISE!!!! LEKENI BU CI LALELALE BANA MAYO NO BU CHENDE BASHI TATA PERIOD UN HOMME ET UNE FEMME CEST ECLIE POUR LA VIE.

  30. Remember Dr Bulaya? Not these common pipo but a Dr. He too helped himself with this kind of money. He later went into exile at UTH intensive care unit. Mwe bantu pilizi where are we heading to?

  31. There’s no denying that unprotected sex is the most common medium for the transmission of sex. However, let it be known that it takes just one careless encounter to get infected. You don’t have to be promiscuous or adulterous, just careless for five minutes(or less maybe…he he) to get infected. Attitudes ofcourse must be changed and bad habbits especially amongst us men must be shunned. I agree with all of you that say that sleeping around increases the chances of getting the disease, but being faithful does not necessarily protect you. We have to look at the big picture and tackle the problem wholesomely.

  32. I was so shocked to see people parading to sell sex in Livingstone.
Imagine this was just about 20m from where the candle light proccession was taking place. I think its time prostitution was legalised so that it can be controlled. This is the only way we can fight HIV/AIDS as prostitutes shall be compelled to under go egular tests and operate from designated places(Red light districts)

  33. Loooooook at that BROAD smile from the lady on the far right in the picture above where an HIV educationist is demonstrating how to use a condom. Need I say any further about HUMANS and SEX….I rest my case.

  34. The poverty in our country has contributed to HIV and AIDS.Chishala , Kazembe SOSI JUMA used to sing ecucative songs not our young ones who yust sing love songs and others put into pracatice even the radio stations play these songs both private and gvt where are we going.

  35. If there is only one person, who could misappropriate funds meant for the vulnerable,on this blog its Engine block. His big appetite for money gives me sleepless nights. I worry so much about him.And i only hope he wont embarrance Zambia where he is! It is very unfortunate that people can divert money meant for people who are living the Hiv virus. This kind of love for money is very dangerous. It just shows how people would even never care, for their fellow human beings because of money. And most of these NGOs we have today dealing with aids issues, are not genuine. They have just formed these organisations to steal money.Shame on you!

  36. People who are living with the aids virus, needs the support of every right minded person. And not to be totured further by Chewing the money meant for their lives.

  37. UMUTI WA KASHISHI KA HIV BALIUSANGA NOMBA PANTU MWALIBA AKALILO. ECO TETI BACITE RELEASE PA MARKET BALETINA NO BONUS. HIV TEMUBUCHENDE YABA FYE IYO!! MULEILUKA MWE BANTU!

  38. its unfortunate people in incharge are busy chewing the money when people are realy suffering.

LT lets have a new topic, kale buchile bane. CHOLERA has claimed 486 lives in zimbabwe so far!! very sad indeed…..

  39. No. 13 Ze Mule, be strong I know I dont qualify to encourage you coz I dont know my status and I dont what to know, come what may. African muti should be encouraged. Testing shouldnt be a forcing matter. If the muti was to be discovered today I wounder what would become of KK Children’s Foundation, Prof Nkandu Luo and others, GOD HELP US!!!

  40. While I appreciate Mbulakulima’s remarks, what gives him the right to see what others are doing with that big plank in his eyes?Remove it fisrt sir stop bad deeds first and then advise. Its very common for zambain politicians to speak good and turn around and do worse.Zambian politicians will never get kind treatment as long as they keep on stealing gvt resources.

  41. LONG TIME AGO,IN 1988, I WAS INVOLVED IN ANTI-AIDS CAMPAIGNS AND I WAS AMAZED AT THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT MY SUPERVISOR HAD AT THEIR DISPOSAL TO PAY US AS WE WENT DOOR TO DOOR TALKING ABOUT AIDS. AT THAT TIME AN HIV POSITIVE DIAGNOSIS WAS A DEATH SENTENCE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. ONE DELEGATE AT AN HIV/AIDS CONFERENCE SAID, ‘THE ONLY PEOPLE GETTING FAT FROM THIS ‘SLIMMERS’ DISEASE’ ARE US, HEATHCARE STAFF WHO ATTEND THESE CONFERENCES AND TALK ABOUT THE DISEASE.’ IT IS 20 YEARS NOW AND NOTHING SEEMS TO HAVE CHANGED. AIDS CAN BE DEFEATED BUT EDUCATION IS NOT THE KEY. I WILL TELL YOU WHY…

  42. IF IT WAS, THE PEOPLE IN THE ‘KNOW’ SUCH AS HEALTHCARE WORKERS WOULD HAVE BEEN SPARED. WHY IS SO MUCH MONEY SPENT ON SO CALLED ‘AIDS AWARENESS?’ THE ONLY AWARENESS THAT PEOPLE NEED IS TO STOP DISCRIMINATION (SUCH AS WE HAVE WITNSSED FROM SOME LT BLOGGERS). NEXT IS UNIVERSAL TESTING. NOBODY ASKS PERMISSION TO TEST FOR MALARIA OR SYPHILIS, WHY FOR HIV? COUNSELLING AND CONSENT TO TEST WERE NECESSARY WHEN THERE WAS NO MEDICAL HELP BUT NOW THAT ARVS ARE AVAILABLE TESTING MUST BE ROUTINE AND UNIVERSAL. MONEY SHOULD BE SPENT ON ACCURATE TESTS AND DRUGS. IF WE DID THIS IN 10 YRS HIV WILL BE HISTORY JUST LIKE SMALL POX.

  43. In a Zambian setup we dont need to print Aids materials but provide food and other supliments to infected people thats all.

  44. HERE IS AN HIV/AIDS POLICY THAT WILL KILL THE DISEASE:
    1. ALL MUST BE TESTED AND THE TESTS MUST BE IMPROVED.
    2. ALL MUST HAVE ACCESS TO LIFE INSURANCE.
    3. ALL MUST BE TREATED WITH THE BEST DRUGS OUT THERE.
    4. ALL ORPHANS MUST BE CARED FOR BY SOCIAL SECURITY NETS.
    5. ALL MUST PROTECT THE OTHER PERSON
THOSE WHO ARE INCONTINENT MAY HAVE AS MANY PARTNERS AS THEY LIKE BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE THEM IN SUCCESION OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME AND NOT ALL AT ONCE. E.G. ONE PERSON MAY HAVE 10 PARTNERS, ONE PARTNER EVERY YEAR FOR 10 YEARS, BUT NOT THE 10 PARTNERS EACH YEAR FOR TEN YEARS.

  45. Hey,Spectator msng you so much. Missing you like crazie! Where have you been? You are supposed to be on the trip to Tanzania this month end! I hope namunfwa bakamba.Am so happy u are back!

  46. AIDS is real. Voter Rigger, I agree with you. If HIV testing is put mandatory, alot of people would no their status and start taking medication to reduce the deaths. Even people would change their life styles knowing that they wud be tested hence, stick to one partner or use condoms. Ze Mule you are strong. Very people can say their status. I hear taking Asprin once every week can also prolong life but I don’t how true it is. I have equally lost friends and relatives due to Aids. So we are all affected in one way or the other.

  47. THERE SOME PEOPLE WHO AFTER FINDING OUT THERE STATUS HAVE GONE ON RAMPAGE INFECTING OTHERS ,FOR INSTANCE IF U R HUSBAND/WIFE AND U FIND URSELF IN SUCH AN UNFORTUNATE SITUATION I BELIEVE IT WILL HELP TO BRING TO BOOK THE SUSPECTED CULPRIT ,BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW 80% INFECTION COMES FROM SEXUAL PROMISCUITY
    SUGGESTED SOLUTION
    #IMPRISONMENT
    #FINES
    #DIVORCE

  48. #36 I agree with u in fact pipo in zed r not as promiscuous as what we see in western countries if that were the case, half the population of zed wud be depleted by now!the thing is not that pipo r infected pipo back home are DYING from the disease because of poverty. pipo cant take proper care of themselves, don’t eat properly coz not everyone has the proper resources.Look at botswana so many have the disease but they are not dying from it as much as in zed. In western countries pipo dnt even go for testing as much as back home because they dont consider it as big a problem as it is in sub-saharan africa, if they had a survey they’d probably find that the prevalence is higher than believed

  49. #66 that aspirin can maybe reduce chances of things like heart failure and and other blood clotting diseases coz it thins your blood and reduces the risk of formation of big clots which can block blood vessels its not related to HIV?AIDS
