Former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa (in red) dancing during the farmers day celebration in Lusaka west

Former first lady, Maureen Mwanawasa, has noted with sadness the shortage of maize in the country and the escalating prices of the commodity despite the good agricultural programmes that government has put in place.

Mrs. Mwanawasa also expressed sadness that Zambia was experiencing these problems when the country has abundant natural and human resources.

She said although Zambia has many solutions to these problems, it was failing to meet them because of the inadequate agricultural policies that are currently in place.

Mrs. Mwanawasa, who is also the chairperson of the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI), was speaking in Lusaka today at the celebration of Magaba Women Cooperative farmer’s day.

She said there is need for the government to make laws that will help the country come up with both short and long term measures to deal with these problems.

She said as a solution to the current problems, government should equip Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) with new machinery and also plan for the establishment of the new fertilizer plant to help revamp the agricultural sector.

She also urged government to seriously consider early planning and sourcing of fertilizer to support the agricultural sector, adding that late imports of fertilizer and farming inputs was costly.

She also urged government to subside the farmers to ensure that the country has cheap and affordable prices of food.

The former first lady said subsides should be done all year round to allow farmers diversify their agriculture activities using affordable inputs.

Mrs. Mwanawasa also appealed to government to increase the allocation of funds to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to enable it to have sufficient maize for consumption.

She also said there is need to revamp the growing of winter maize as a buffer to the unforeseen shortage of maize, adding that this will enable the country be a food basket and will export the maize when it has surplus.

She however called on all Zambians to work hard to ensure that the country is again turned into the food basket.

Meanwhile, Magaba Women’s Cooperative chairperson, Laima Ndhlovu, commended government for reducing the price of maize and fuel despite the many challenges the country is going through.

Ms. Ndhlovu said despite the prevailing global economic problems, government has reduced the price of maize and fuel for the benefit of all Zambians.

She urged government not to listen to critiques but instead advice them to offer constructive ideas.

Ms. Ndhlovu has also said government should provide small scale farmers with all required inputs in order to promote food security.

She said government should therefore extend the price reductions on all farming inputs in order for this to be realized.

  1. NCZ yes, diversify i wonder what happened to the copperbelt diversification programme after so much money was pushed into that?We were to quick to rush and forget about all this diversification after the boom in copper prices. :-w

  2. #3 Maureen is right I hope she keep talking for the less prividged in our society. I for one was very unsold of the late being President but he performed exceptually well and this time I am willing to give the formerer first lady a benefit of doutbt **==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==:-@:-@:-@:-@:-@:-@:-@:-@:-@:-@^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^**==**==**==:-@:-@:-@:-@^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^:-@:-@^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^

  3. Maureen is one character whose mind does not dwell only on explaining how something is a problem but she also provides solutions. She said ‘as a solution to the current problems, government should equip Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) with new machinery and also plan for the establishment of the new fertilizer plant to help revamp the agricultural sector.’ This is practical thought pattern not the current politicians whose minds are wondering here and about in mediocrity given that farmers practice and not talk agriculture.

  4. Zambian maize harvests will be below national requirements this coming harvesting season, due to lack of inputs like FERTILIZER, POOR ROAD NET-WORKS, LOW UNECONOMIC PRICES OF MAIZE for farmers. This means the price of MEALIE MEAL will shoot up again.

The current agricultural policies are heavily POLITICIZED as seen in the last PRESIDENTIAL BYE-ELECTIONS, why POLITICALLY CONVINIENT PROMISES were made to small-scale farmers, just to gain their support.

Maureen is right, but do we have genuine leadership??

  5. Levy was President for a full 7 years and Ba Maureen was First Lady during that time. Why shout now about NCZ instead of whispering to her husband to rehab NCZ and build another olant.

Ifya ku chita blame RB for Levy’s mistakes fyena tafya bombe.

  6. Hi pipo, how are you doing, just past through to check on my friend Pinkly, she is upset with me…am not goin to stay long as am rushing to go and burry my cousin who died in a car accident on saturday…a very brilliant young man indeed…PINKLY, please hear me out…and get in touch with me if you find it befitting… 🙁

  7. # 17 validate your question with tangible material. As a suggestion you could provide alternative an viewpoint then we can weight it against what she has said. To ask a question of your magnitude where time is a factor given the underscored subject matter require urgent attention is in itself wondering in mind. Whats your point besides the question?

  8. No problem since she is concerned for the people of zambia on tryng to give her thought as on how government should solve the problem it is facing.

  9. ba Former nabo! when did she realise that NCZ needed rehabilitating, re-equiping, refurbishing, or whatever? she is only less than six months out of State House. go to Kafue and see for yourselves, the plant has been neglected and obviously our politicians dont see. bunda bwakupitana mufyalo fyabanesu and cant copy how things are done.

  10. She just taking advantage of the situation, and very soon she will be in RB govt. She could told the husband all those things.

  11. # 15 I conquer with you.I think thats why the our coutry had attained some stability under her husband, because am very sure she used to advice on some issues.Suitable first lady,i miss her.wonder when our current first lady will reach this standared.

  12. #40 Hangandu you wrote “She just taking advantage of the situation, and very soon she will be in RB govt. She could told the husband all those things.” well i find your idea speculative. Do you think she is a job seeker? Its folly to align our thoughts in pessimistic realm. our ultimate end of it all is to overcome problems. you seem to have problems. Why not take an IQ test?

    Kopona kabotu.

  13. Honestly NCZ is not profitable in its current form. Lets not cheat ourselves. Alot of money has been poured into NCZ..remember Bob Sichinga driving that move? That company’s business model is flawed. It is actually cheaper to import fertilizer from abroad.

Infact I would go as far as saying fertiliser production in Zambia is not profitable and sustainable. People are just politicking and they know it. Even area member of parliament Magande knows full well, hence the silence.

Maybe give incentives to the private sector to build new NCZs ..kind of do something that they did to replace UBZ which was not profitable and sustainable. NCZ managemt is useless they will just waste new Capital

Be careful with what you say, otherwise the birds may carry your words. We know that you travel to the UK was financed by your sweetheart dancing behind Maureen. Before your travelled it was all lovey dovey but now you are pretending as though you are seeing her for the first time.Lear to count your blessings.

  15. Former first lady Mrs. Mwanawasa also appealed to government to increase the allocation of funds to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to enable it to have sufficient maize for consumption.

I remember the late castigating FRA for awarding themselves hefty allowances. They have the money but no plans. How can a country experince a bumper harvest in one year and the following year there is a serious shortage of maize. jokers.

Yes i do and frequently. such helps develop cognition. try one bro and aim to improve each time you attempt. besides find your own reason interesting. Good question bro.

  18. The woman behind maureen in the picture is truly a big diff. I know of a friend who likes such ladies. I will pass the recommendation to him.

  19. Goodmorning bloggers. Good points raised by our former first lady but I wonder why she faces so much criticism. She’s now a free citizen & can say whatever she feels without being ostracised. Anyway, like Pinkly has already said: wonders will never end.
PS. #23 Rashid why so much hatred? Do you have evidence for those allegations?

  20. #41. mimi
you wrote “thats why the our coutry had attained some stability under her husband, because am very sure she used to advice on some issues”

Thats very true. Keep on exploring your inner self and your mind points towards that of strong and self reliant and independent of influence from wonderers. you are a leader.

    You wrote ‘Ninshi?’

I guess we have to be conclusive with what we begin. Are you a journalist? coz they are never conclusive with a story in that they will jump to the other one and so on and so forth.

    Good day man.

  23. #42 Hankobo , read 43. which every one with good IQ agree to. so who ever is talking about NCZ is just doing cheap politics. May be one they will appoint her as VP.

  24. #42 The current goepolitical position on poverty eradication, hunger, disease, financial instability and many other challenges facing humanity especially in the sub region is developmental politics. htis means enhencement of capacity utilisation especially down the value chain i.e towards the source of raw materials. this underscores the case for NCZ plant utilisation because there is a correlation between agric production and fertiliser supply. Zambia underwent merchanisation long time ago but processes of production and output slowed because of people like you. one would ask whats the alternative if not what we have? you seem not to have answers either.

  25. #66 Rashid, am ok jus wonderin where the rest of the crew r i.e Baby C,Lusaka,Matworld,Girly or hav they changed names?Pinkly,Nine Chale, Spectator and the rest, hw r u guys.

  26. Nine Chale, I have been looking for you, where have you been? My friend, Maureen owes Zambians alot. you mean you have already forgoten about her behaviour when she was first lady?

  27. #55. Nine Chale
I agree with you, but the problem we have here is that some people have a syndrome. Medical people call this syndrome ‘critique’. It has similar effects on the brain as tobacco. It is addictive and highly bondaging. The victim will be restless until they have criticised. The blood pressure may go up, coupled with sweating when they hear anything and this state may continue to give them much bother until they criticise. The sad part is that so far no surpressant has been found for this type of addiction. Withdrawal has also not been recorded by various studies that have been conducted so far.
However there could be some home as Prof. Cool is conducting further studies.

  28. SMALL WONDER, THERE IS STURVATION IN ZAMBIA. DISTRIBUTION OF RESOURCES (FOOD) IS VERY UNEVEN IF LOOK AT THE THREE WOMEN. AND BY THE WAY WHO SHOULD BE BEATING DRUMS FOR WHO? TO MY LOOK OF THINGS, THE THREE WOMEN IN FRONT SHOULD BE SHADING OFF THEIR FATS.

  29. MMCI, hmm, I wonder. After so many years in govt now u also have something to say eh? Nway, lyfs full of bull so Maureen jes enjoy ur husbands money o start looking for another man. Last I checked u were dancing so close to RB, wats the plan, wan b 1st lady again? Give chance to litle Thandie eeh. Havent u grabed enuf husbands?

  30. She makes sense. She were are husband went wrong. I guess she is the standby First lady. To much pronouncements and no work in Zed.

  31. The reasons for criticising ba Maureen are not hard to see:
    1. Our country and its citizens have been very kind in evaluating LPM’s legacy and they don’t want Maureen to force them to become blunt.
    2. Insansa kuchinjana – and ba Maureen had her day in the sun. It is time for others. Zambia is very egalitarian, not like India where the same family governs.
    3. Even more than Levy, ba Maureen was responsible for the family tree which staffed every Zambian embassy and they are still there.
    4. The connection with Rajan Mahtani earned the family a lot of money. Mahtani was given insurance contract for TAZAMA and INDENI and also contract to finance oil imports.

  32. Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) needs about K50 billion to pay off it’s debt and start to operate.

Miombe Investments was paid K266 billion to supply fertiliser only fo this farming season.

Simple logic breaks down. It does not make sense.

    Zambia in the sun!!!!!!!!!!

  33. # 43 Papa J. The idea of importing fertilizer is a good one if Govt would land it at a reasonable cost and without going through middle businesses like Miombe Investments.

I would rather we produce fertilizer locally at a cost slightly higher than the imported one and our people benefit through the proving of employment. the idea of making a few individuals rich at the expense of the entire country is not making sense.

As for the former first Lady, she will find it difficult to convince anyone because she had an opprtunity to bring about real change in alot of areas but failed.

  34. These politicians are amazing. Talking about GRZ providing subsidies when they know that GRZ has no money. Why can’t she tell the GRZ not to build her a house. She and her late husband own houses already and farms. Zambians wake up!!!!!!

  35. by the way, what happened to that programme in which rupiah banda was distributing mealie meal, sugar and chisense to the villagers in katete? is it still going on, and if so, where? Anybody on thisn forum whose relative has benefitted from the same? or can we call in the ACC and ECZ to establish a prima facie case of “zimphupu”?

  36. #68 Rashid, I’m very much around bro. Just that sometimes I choose to keep a low profile, just watching things from a distance. One of the good virtues I have learnt from the Germans.
#69 Fine, I like your exegesis, it holds a lot of truth. You are one of the bloggers with originality & insight on this blog & I enjoy reading your comments. Big up!

  37. Diversification: rice, potatoes, cassava, finger millet, wheat, etc etc. we only have simple minds and we are very myopic. Think zambia Think! How do western and eastern nations feed themselves and ever with plenty? Keep solutions simple and straight forward and avoid being greedy. Produce before you even think of stealing. You may only steal from surplus- not from the basic amounts when you can’t even feed your family. we have corrupt minds, only 360 degrees turn round will save Zambia.

  38. Ba Mrs Mwanawasa balanda ichishinka. Is this reporter telling us that Laima was at the same event with Mrs Mwanawasa and yet bring out contradictions concerning the price of maize- Laima commended the government for slashing the price of maize while Mrs mwanawasa bemoaned the high cost of maize.

  39. Rashid Jones, my boy it’s high time you watch your comments and don’t bring ifyabwaice on the brog. I don’t think you understand what you are yaping. Am sure you are fed with wrong information. Peteka umuchila mwaice.

  40. Katwishi Mwe, eyashini? These are holy days so my brother i will just put you in prayers.” Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me everything that i need, thank you father for such friends who needs deliverance like Katwishi Mwe.Dear God bless them all in Jesus’ name.Amen”

  41. Maureen is talking sense here. She is saying beautifull things,as beautifull as she is! Maureen is cutey bane! Especially Chi Regina Chiluba!

  42. Chewe, how are you my brother? I know you are very disappointed with Chelsea but remember that i told you that its hard to manage a team stars. Anyway try FA cup.

  44. where do these women get the time to be dancing?let them spend time productively at work or with families. There is too much politics in our country at the expense of national development. If successfull presidents in the world can longer affored 10 holidays but how can Mr Banda can affored it?he should have taken a five day hoiliday.

  46. Maureen was in statehouse for a long time and if she was seroius with what she was saying she could advised the late hubby to

    1. Revamped NCZ and
    2. also built another plant

The issue of winter maize was tried by her hubby in southern province at great cost to the govt and failed lamentably.

FRA activities are not a viable business that this why govt is always pumping billions of money just to enrich a few people. It is a bottomless pit latrine.

Maureen just shut up and mourn your hubby. What you have started is just political rhetoric with the hope that you will gain some political mileage.

    Just shut up, will you.

  48. Chewe, God has never failed me in my entire life. Blessings are just flowing in my life.for now im just worried about the woman im going to marry cause man its terrible. sometimes i wonder where she is, what she is doing and with whom is she with but anywhere GOD is in control

  49. No. 14 What’s wrong with the woman behind Maureen? She has just mis-matched her clothes. Otherwise she’s not bad. She’s a real woman built for comfort.

  50. Rashid.
I feel for you Rashid but don’t worry too much other wise the woman you love might think you are too obessive.

  51. Call a spade a spade, there is a lot of sense in what Maureen has said.People must learn top appreciate what they see.It seems there are people who are always negative of everything. We have a lot of people with a lot of reason for us to attack them eg FTJ, Kabwe,Chungu,Katoto etc, etc yet you remain mute about all these chaps but when someone says something sensible you try to score minuses.
Keep up Maureen, its genuine adivce which if implemented would see Zambia go a long way into development

  52. Shoe String – you appear to be a fraustrated person who can’t stand it when other people are getting on with their lives. Man you should travel and then you’ll realize that there is nothing wrong with what Maureen is doing. Lay off. Let her get on with her life. Maybe you can link up with that beautiful woman behind her.

  53. Sarah Jones, how are you? Im tired of these coplaints and Problems pe Zed. Everyday, its just problem after problem, When are Zambians going to be happy with what is happening in Zed?

  54. Rashid, Ma problems ba Zambian will never end but lets keep our fingers crossed you never know maybe God will have mercy on us in 2009.

  55. #92 Dont divert from the topic and move to English soccer. We’ve been around here for so long to know that all Eng. Refs are corrupt. thats why they give 3 yellow cards to a player without sending off. Remember the last worl cup.

They are all preparing for man utd to win the league again. we know these things.

Back to ba Maureen, she is correct in her assesment of things on the ground.

  56. I have found my candidate for 2011.

This time we will surely have a woman in power. A woman has a mothers touch and a woman is more compassionate therefore a woman is more prone to listen to the people and receive advice and constructive criticism.

    MAUREEN MWANAWASA FOR 2011.

  57. Free-Market-Capitlst, are dreaming or maybe ndiye kuyamba kwa ma jokes ya 2009? Maureen was ruling Zed for 7 years and you dont need to be reminded of her deeds.

  58. Yo, I heard it’s said the revolution won’t be televised
But in the land of milk and honey there’s a date you gotta sell it by
Otherwise it just expires and spoils
And these folks jump out the pot when the water too hot
    Cause the fire boils inside
You go to church to find you some religion
And all you hear is connivin’ and gossip and contradiction and
You try to vote and participate in the government
And the muh’f–kin’ MMDs is actin’ like PF ,UNIP and UPNDs

  59. She is following in the foot steps of vera chiluba, this just shows us how people can not survive outside politics, find a job, start a business and show the people that you can make it outside politics.
If you look at all the politicians in government today you will find that they are unemployable, failed businessmen, who can not run their lives without handout from the state, hence they cling on to the state like parasits, government is their life line.
Its a shame to zambian politics failiers are the one in charge of the state, god help us.

  60. You join an organization that know how to eradicate poverty
But ask them how they plan to make money and it’s a mystery
Lookin’ for the remedy but you can’t see what’s hurtin’ you
The revolution’s here, the revolution is personal

    I don’t even follow it
I’m on some twice, nasty D sh-t,Wu tang
Main Source, De La Soul, bumpin’ “2Pacalypse Now”

  61. :o, ba mama ba Maureen, pls stop exhibiting your ignorance. Escalating food prices and the global recession are things you know little about. Even if LPM was around, or Sata was President, they would do little to salvage us from the effects of the global recession. LPM was reaping the benefits of high copper prices & our brothers in the C/belt all became suppliers. Now, mines are closing right, left & center and this has nothing to do with GRZ policy.

  62. Pinkly, maybe vice versa.oh! i have forgoten that im not Zambian so i cant be president, but i think i can be the first guy.

  63. 123
WALASA. POLITICS IS A QUICK SOURCE OF SWEATLESS MONEY. SHE CAN PRACTICE LAW AND LIVE OFF HER SWEAT. BUT NO, BETTER IN POLITICS WHERE YOU CAN GET RICH OVERNIGHT.

I THOUGHT SHE RELOCATED TO SWITZERLAND WITH DARLINGTON.

MADAM DARLINGTON, OH SORRY, MWANAWASA, DIFFERING IN VIEWS IS THE ESSENCE OF DEMOCRACY, SO GOVT NEEDS TO LISTEN TO THE OPPOSITION. I HOPE THAT WAS NOT WHAT YOU USED TO ADVISE THE LATE, MUKAMFWILWA.

  64. #121, 124 Ghost dog, why don’t you articulate your own opinnion instead of copying lyrics & pasting them here. We’re here to discuss Zambian issues & share ideas & not to waste time and space of this data base on meaningless rap songs.

  65. Guyz, don’t u think its a little 2 early 4 maureen 2 start dancing in public like that, especially if she really loved and respected her husband?? Nasangamo ukufilwa….[-(
But of course she may have a point on the issue of maize prices and factors leading to that=d>

  66. 131. You have done nothing to me brother Chewe. I was just joking, I joke like that with my brothers. Actually am a big fun of you. Ulimwaiche wandi no worries. Now are you the one who is beating the drums behind ba mama ba Maureen?

  67. #133 Planet Mars, don’t make me laugh. You know exactly what I mean. She’s no longer in the statesman’s limelight but a “normaler Bürger” or “common man” like you & me, if you like.

    RESPONSE BAKAAMBA.

am a lylical blogger,I eat and sleep on them cause your comments aint ma food for thought, its all wack, plus your opinions are empty though according to quantum mechanics, the vacuum is not empty, but teeming with virtual particles that constantly wink in and out of existence, the same applies to your thoughts nine chale.Dwag stay off ma D–k

  70. Sarah Jones,i dont want to attack you.You can say whatever you want.I wont reterliate. And may God forgive you.For saying what you said against me.Because,i dont remember saying anythng bad to you.Ever since i started blogging here.

  71. So it apears our leaders can only spot mistakes when outside power. The fomer first lady had chance to put her case to the late, im sure he was a good listener and could have taken action.ONE ZAMBIA,ONE PONDAPONDA.

  72. Let Maureen do what Maureen wants it’s her life not yours. Some of you people are snakes , when it comes to forcing your opinions and gossiping you are masters at it. Worry about what your wives and mothers are doing instead of somebody who doesn’t even know you

  73. Zed has been focusing more on minerals as thou we can eat copper. Now this is haunting us ! we have no option but to priotise agriculture in this country else we die of hunger amidst plenty rainfall ,waters in rivers, dams etc.

LETS STOP PRETENDING,FORGET ABOUT WHITE COLOR JOBS ! EVERYONE GO INTO MAIZE FIELDS ELSE YOU KICK THE BUCKET/

  74. I think farmers already know what needs to be done to have food security in Zambia. Perhaps we should hear from the Farmers Unions too.

  75. For Gods sake I quit blogging, hate, jealousy, bragging and identity seem to be the order of this blog,I realise that the enemy of the cross is using this platform to bring division.I want to wage war with the devil and not man.I have been rude, insulted many,I ask for forgiveness,I feel empty and sorry for our nation. The spirit of zambia is unity but I see the opposite.Love to all the haters, cause you are my broz en sis,no matter what we belong together. Its time to fix the devil,Good blogging to all ya. catch me in the next life

  76. #142
Sorry. I will never joke with you again. What if I said I look like the woman in the white top in the picture would that make you laugh or sad?

  77. The anticipated maize shortage can be supplimented by winter maize chapwa.Ask Mundia Sikata how he did it.If Task Force can have more than K13 billion in account why not hold on to the district hospitals expansion programmes and use this money for this emergency.

  78. 122 Chewe.
I have just read that again what you wrote. I read it as ‘izi'( flies) instead of ‘Muizi’ as in Chilling. I apologize for the misunderstanding what you wrote. Sorry.

  79. #25 walasa. Indeed she was a first lady for full & years and coulnt whisper any jack to her husband about equipping NCZ. Sheer hypocrisy !!!!

  80. #135 – I agree that it is a little too early to be dancing in public. Mrs. Mwanawasa needs to be careful that the rural & peri-urban women, she tends to want to identify with/appeal to, don’t regard her as a deviant. These are likely to be the ones she hopes will be her support base, should she decide to stand in 2011. Like her/hate her, she is an intelligent, capable person with a lot of potential, management & leadership skills, example MMCI, African First Ladies Assoc., etc. She could easily be an effective president. She is damaging her image & reputation by not being more selective with public appearances, her statements & seeming like she no longer mourning, within just 6 months[-

  81. “She however called on all Zambians to work hard to ensure that the country is again turned into the food basket.”

True Mrs M. Mwanawasa. In fact, let us try to use other foods like rice to complement our consumation for Maize – Mealie Meal. It is well known that the Western Province of Zambia can feed the whole Nation for a long time with nicely grown rice due to the plains and the Zambezi river.

Why are we not taking advantage of this? Or when are we going to start such a would-be useful activity? :-?? .

  82. This woman is crazy talking about NCZ all the time her husband was President she could have helped. What about the Company that brings fertilizer in Zambia? Her husband did very little for Zambia

  83. #76: If you have the evidence, please do not hesitate to contact ‘Judge Smith – London High Court’ to add on to his case load of who have defrauded Zambia because from the look of things, Zambians cannot solve their own internal problems.

  84. Hey pipo let the lady cheer up. For how long do you want her to mourn? Life has to go on, remember that she has children to look after. If she remains in the mourning mood, what impresion is she going set to the children. Good point she has raised.

  85. This maureen is surelyfull of surprises she talks as if mwanawasa died ages ago,he just died recently and he left all these problems, never tackled the NCZ problem, why should RB do it? Food basket my foot, what did the husband do about it? Pls don’t put the blame on other people you and your late husband left these problems,so don’t expect miracles because mwanawasa has died.besides its less than six months since he died what can change in six months even she hasn’t changed in the way she conducts herself.
