Police shoot and Kill illegal miner at a slag dump

Share

Police in Mufulira district in Copperbelt province have shot and killed an 18 years old man in a riot that ensued after illegal miners invaded Mopani Mine site slag dump.

The incident happened yesterday when about 50 illegal miners forced their way into the mine plant with a view to challenge police officers who were manning the dump site.

Mopani mine chief security officer, Keith Shankland told Copperbelt province Minister Mwansa Mbulakulima, who rushed to the site to have a physical assessment of the situation, that the illegal miners forced their way to the slag dumps where they started throwing stones at police officers

And in Mazabuka district, a 34 year old man of Nega Nega area in Mazabuka district has been gruesomely killed yesterday.

Police, who have since launched a manhunt for the suspected murderer, described the killing of the man as the deadliest incident during the festive period in the area.

Police in Nega Nega, who confirmed the death to ZANIS in Mazabuka today, said the deceased suffered multiple head and body injuries through which he bled to death.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased and the suspected murderer quarrel before the fight at a beer party at Nega last night.

Police said an axe was used to kill the deceased.

And former Police Officer, Patrick Mombelela, who is leading a team of police officers searching for the suspect, told ZANIS that the body of the deceased was still at the scene of the murder awaiting police to take finger prints.

Meanwhile, two people, among them a house wife, are battling for their lives in Mazabuka district hospital after they were assaulted in two separate incidents.

Mazabuka District hospital administrator, Essau Mujansi confirmed the development to ZANIS in Mazabuka.

Mr. Mujansi said both victims suffered serious head injuries.

And alert security officers at Mazabuka hospital this morning arrested and handed over to police, the husband to the injured housewife, who suffered head and neck injuries.

The guards told ZANIS, they arrested the man after word went round that he had gone to check if his wife had died following injuries she suffered last night.

  1. LT, Please ensure that you give the Mufulira story some context. What were the miners fighting for, What do they mine at the site, Where do they process what they mine, How many were the illegal miners?

Without context it is not easy to make a reasonable comment.

  2. These need to survive and go to these mines for survival regardless of the dangers of illegal mining. Sensitization would also help greatly on the dangers of illegal mining, just wondering how they forced themselves….is it Talibans….This is poverty at it highest level…

  5. These guys scavenge the mine slag dumps for cobalt,Copper and other minerals which the sell to copper dealers who enventually export the same minerals to south africa. Many copper copper dealers on the copperbelt have made to the top at the expense of these poor souls like the one slain in this story. There is a copper dealer guy in Kitwe called young, this guy today is driving a hammer worth K200 million. But the question we should ask ourselves is,how much did he pay in terms of taxes for that kind of vehicle land in Zambia.Because just for a simple corolla to be cleared ZRA ensure that they choke you to death asking more than the value of that 2nd hand car.I now agree that this country is for

  15. Condolences to the bereaved families of those who died and sad news to read about deaths at this time of the year 2009.

Also, it is very disturbing to read about the injured. I am wishing them quick recovery! Also, let the culprits receive their due for these acts in the courts of law.

I am also proposing the Mazabuka be upgraded to a City status following the activities that have rocked the town over a period of time now including huge investments.

  17. do you know that some teachers have resorted to teaching by remote control? its the same thing, chifukushi – so they prefer going to Dubs, China, SA for makwebo. Thats the way to get by.
When you ask if someone took leave and that they are always on leave the answer is “we teach by remote control”. just leave notes with the monitor to write on the board for every session of the lesseon for one week.

  24. Ifika poko just wait for me to be incharge you guys will be paying for wha you are doing.busy claim innocent lives.Recently a guy was shot dead after being suspected to be one of the crimininals and only to find out that the guy was not even involved.I think the police inspector or whatever they call them selves should look into this. These pipo are busy killing innocent lives. These pipo that endup being shot are neither way involved in most of the cases.they just endup to be victims of the circumstance.I think this issue has to be looked at no man has the right to send the other to the grave. They have to be arrested and charged for murder and not what the call self defence.

  25. awe guys beniko serious…Mukamba RB just ur 2nd day in power in 2009 and pipo die???
come on bring police guys to justice..even in palestine wornings come before bombing or shooting..why should one die over copper left overs?

  26. That’s why the dreadlocks man nah like de po-lice man! De yute should ‘ave carried a pump rifle fe defense.

  27. well we are still on the verge of learning…the police force needs to be educated on the peril and disadvantages of using live ammoz on unarmed groupings…

  28. Very sad indeed.

So are we to believe that these illegal miners continued to throw stones even after warning shots were fired? How many policemen were involved? Did they shoot because they were scared the 50 miners would overcome them? How many of the remaining 50 survived unscathed – how was the situation eventually brought under control? Were any of the policemen injured ? Why did the illegals miners decide to make the charge on the officers?

The story needs some more facts. 18 year old kid, very sad!

  29. #19 & 21, If you will be suspecting anyone of being ‘jujuman’ you will maimtain the same propensity of poverty !

  30. BUN DEM DREAD. DE POLICE VEX I AN MI SO RED MON. LAS NITE MI DE PON DI BASHMENT AN MI GOT ARRES FI SUS .. TRU DAT MON. ANYWAY I AN DE FAMBLY BACK A YAARD WE COOL MON.

  31. Ama slag heaps ni kumalabo. I used to go there as a kid in Kitwe, but managed to get a PhD eventually in the US. I hope this is just right a rite of passage for these guys as it was for me. Otherwise they are doomed forever.

  32. It is really sad to die in such a manner, – i also pity the one that was axed from beer drinking. People, Beer from the begining has brought a lot of problems.
Without too much alchohol, Noah would not have been tambilad, and the son would not have been cursed.
In our Hunger/anger lets not be led into sin. I pray that the families of the deceased be care for by our Heavenly Father who is a father to the fatherless.
    AAAAAmen

  33. Please Maestro don’t be lured by these bloggers who are here NOT inculcate knowledge but to chat frivolities and take up space with there lousy greetings as if Yahoo messenger wouldn’t be a better option!

  34. Don’t start supoorting thieves ati they have nothing to do that’s why they steal. No chance what about agriculture, ambians are blessed with very vast land which just needs people to work on it.People can go into fishing as well.Ther’s plenty to do rather than trying to steal those slags whatever you call them.

  35. About the police and their shootings. Pliz people understand that policemen are pipo just like u and have families, too. And when he goes for work and a group of thugs come to steal, they come with two intensions. To steal and to kill the guard. The story is a group of them and armed with stones, meaning they went to kill. How do you one was innocent when he actually was in a group of those who forced their way into the plant. Is hunger reason enough to justify commiting a wrong? Pliz a alot of pipo have resorted to cultivating the land than stealing and are doing good. Wages of sin is death indeed.

  36. I meant to say the story is saying a group of them armed with stones… And again I wanted to say how do u say one was innocent when he actually was in group of those who forced their way into the plant?

  37. The Police Officer who fired the fatal bullet must be arrested for murder and the Police Service and the state sued.

  38. The sad thing is that our police is still a force and not a service. Shootings like the one in the report testify to this. As for the illegal miners, we need to understand a few things. I have worked as a chemist for ZCCM,KCM and MCM labs. Slag dumps are high in copper, cobalt, nickel, zinc, gold, platinum, palladium etc in concentrate form than occurs in ores. Therefore, the temptation is irresistible especially that these dumps were looked upon as waste until the advent of modern methods of extractive metallurgy that are able to recover even the lowest concentrations of these metals. And that is what Mopani is doing now. Remember gold is selling at over $850/ounce. Understand this.
