Joyce Nonde, Beatrice Nyirongo condemn UNZA riot

Share

The Federation of Free Trade Unions in Zambia (FFTUZ) and the Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWUZ) have condemned the riotous behaviour by some University of Zambia (UNZA) students who are demanding increased meal allowances.

Speaking in separate interview with ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday, FFTUZ president, Joyce Nonde-Simukoko, said it was sad that the students resorted to riotous behaviour over the allowances.

Mrs. Nonde-Simukoko said it would always be better for the students to use the right channel when aggrieved on certain issues other than resorting to riotous behaviour.

She added that it was also not fair for the students to stone and damage public property, which she said was very dangerous to people’s lives.

The FFTUZ president said students need to be responsible and intellectual in the way they were addressing issues affecting them.

Mrs. Nonde-Simukoko also said the students should realize that government would be required to repair the same property they were destroying.

She said students should instead demonstrate peacefully than resorting to riotous behaviour.

And CSAWUZ vice president Beatrice Nyirongo expressed disappointment at the riotous behaviour by the UNZA students.

Mrs. Nyirongo said it was very irresponsible for UNZA students.

She said it was wrong for the students to start attacking the members of the public who were innocent people.

On Tuesday night , some University of Zambia (UNZA) students ran amok and rioted demanding meal allowances.

  1. The government must find a final solution to this problem and not just condemn students. The revolt will never stop as long as there is no equal opportunity for students.

  2. You people, thats why we never develop. Lets always look at the root cause of the same riot and if we can solve that then there will be no more riots at UNZA. Don’t just condemn the students. What I know is that students a peaceful unless something extremely goes wrong. Why is Nonde and Nyirongo not condeming the govt who did not pay the students in time? Council workers are not paid salaries for 2 years and when they riot, you condem the workers instead of condeming the one who has not paid them. I am sure Nonde and Nyirongo where eating 3 meals for 3 weeks when students where staying with no food for the same period. Dont condem blindly to gain popularity.

    its A kind of tradition,:d
every year its got to happen,
its the only place you can do such a thing and walk away with it.
    viva monko

  4. The students need Kambis for them to survive
UUsually riotous behaviour has proven to be the quickest option to force government to act.

  5. IF THEY WANT FREE MEALS, THEY MUST GO TO IRAQ OR AFGANSTAN,TO FIGHT .
THERE, THEY WONT BE PAYING FOR THEIR FOOD AND UPKEEP., OR FUEL.

    EVERYTHING IS FREE.

  6. I HOPE THE POLICE ARE AT HAND TO DEAL WITH THE TROUBLE MAKERS. INSTEAD OF GOING TO WORK PART TIME AND MAKE MONEY, THEY ARE BUSY DAMAGIN PIPOS CARS, THIS IS WHAT IS CALLED PUBLIC MISCONDUCT. PLEASE SEND THEM ALL TO JAIL, AND THRO AWAY THE KEYS.

  7. i thought these are the same people who once called themselves, students of rupiah, how come they are fighting the same rupiah. wait your old man promised you impossibillities. there’s more to come, mind you this is more polical. very fun. :)):)):))%-(%-(:((:((

  8. Even lectures teach wre diplomacy fails..violence takes over..damaging peoples vechles is easier faster n safer than hiting people.wats more valuable a car o human life?

  10. When I look back, I shudder to think I was also a stone thrower at Camp D. Govt should learn to keep appointments and start paying the BC on time. Please 01 students, try to behave…

:-w Why do you have a grudge against UNZA students?
They are the future of **== , They are the cream of the nation.
have you ever begged or fasted for three week?
thats what they have been going through.
At least they are brave to fight.

  12. I find it premature for students to stone property of innocent citizens! why not stone state house if you think you are real MONKS and MOMMERS?? if you will get away with it by your friends at Arakan! Be civilised and intellectual, if things are hard let them start to take care of themselves like the students at NIPA.

  13. #17: Since when did you last go to Zambia. People can hardly find work there. Which work are you talking about. Even if they had to find work, they are not paid. The root cause of these problems is the govt. Solve the problems at bursaries and see whether students will riot.

  14. TOKO,
WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS A TRADITION. THIS IS DISTURBIN THE PEACE. THESE PIPO MUST BE SERIOUS AND BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE LIKE EDUCATED PIPO.
THEY ARE DOING THINGS LIKE THEY ARE IN THE CAVE MAN TIMES.

    THIS IS 2009, NOT 1930s

THEY NEED TO GROW UP AND FINISH THEIR STUDIES

  15. Though the method of expressing dissatisfication used by the students was very uncouth ,i seem to find a room of understanding in my heart ,why this future leaders went to that extent.Zambias food basket is no longer the same, so the need for government to increase the students allowances ,instead of just spending money on people like Vj,so banonde and the rest of those quick in condemning try to go to the bottom of the whole problem before rushing out in giving your judgement.

  16. Hellow felow bloggers!! Nine chale,3RqU,Baby C,Tionge,Kashimani, toko,Sister and the rest!

These guys should stop such riotos behaviour as they are highly unintelletual, retrogressive misrepresentative of Zambia as a whole. Why should universty students behave like barbarians instead of engaging in constructive dialogue? Yes the govt should pay students on time but it is grossly wrong for them to engage in terrorist acts like stoning vehicles and destroying property. We are in a hurry to develop and destroying property should be roundly condemned.

  17. sudents should be responsible.why destroying proparties?Sometimes we zambians are too lazy such that we want everything from govt.Give them jobs so that they can stop demonstrating.i don’t think a student should always depend on govt.I’m a student also in Russia but i’ve found something to do in order to make a living. Russian students
are just given $60 per month.Tht’s the highest payment a good student can get.If u do very bad in exams they give u nothing.
.when it comes to the living they found something 4 themselves. However, african mentality is to be given everything by govt.what should govt do is to find simple jobs 4 students so that they can work 4 it.

  18. I happen to be one of UNZA graduates. I remember during my stay at UNZA (1995 – 2001), we lost almost two academic years due to instability at university (I was actually supposed to have finished in 1999 being a 5-year course). I have leanrt that its not a good idea to riot. However the govt. should just learn to listen to the plight of the student. Sometimes I know students ask for too much but I believe an agreement should be found whereby both parties are content. Viva UNZA, Viva Student Power, Viva.

  19. #23: Tell me the best way for students to go and stone state house without police resistance. Don’t just talk from without. I am not supporting stoning vehicles but the govt should also be serious.

  20. why should we suffer because of unza, let them start doing what they do best, prostitution, drugs and drunkeness after all they used leakageis to go there .let whoever told them to buy leakagies pay for them.alot of people are suffering why spend money on people who will not even use the money wrightly.if government has money let it be used on flood victims.

  21. #22 TOKO, I DONT HAVE A GARAGE,
ALL I AM TRYING TO SAY IS THAT, THERE ARE PROPER WAYS OF COMMUNICATING, NOT DAMAGE TO PIPOS CARS.
THEY ARE BEHAVING LIKE BABYS, THROWING THEIR TOYS OUT OF THE PRAM WONT SOLVE THE PROBLEM, INSTEAD OF SOLVIN THE PROBLEM LIKE MATURED PIPO.

  22. There’s a big different between zambian students in russian and those back home. Here in russia we should be given more mney because we can’t work. Therefore we’ve no way out.But those in zed should do something rather than destroying properties Tht’s crazy!!

  23. The cunt is now enjoying sex legally and wants to shoot ba Monko, panse iwe chi mayo. Ba sata dumped you and easily you lured a widower who’s sexually starved. Just enjoy the sex and reserve silly comments to yoself.

  24. #28. I remember you russians compalined when you were not paid in time, despite many jobs were you are. Its the same hunger my friend.

  25. KA PRINCES
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
what do you think they have been doing for the past three weeks?
do you think they have not dialogued and sought the attention of authorities? how do you expect over 4000 people to sit and wait till somebody wakes up while they starve.
the govt always wait for riots to take action.
    hey,it always works.

  26. UNZA opened on 28th December, 2008 and since then, no Meal Allowance. What’s a poor fellow from a village in Chama going to eat without this money?

  27. @ #11 Ubuntungwa mu Zambia……

You must be some nutter you, a wrong does not justify another,

is that the best way to address a grievance, smashing my had earned car,

you must have a pea for brains

  28. TOKO,Terminator ,ba sata
WHAT HAPPEND TO PEACE PROTEST, TELL THEM TO GET THIER OLD SHOES AND THRO THEM AT THE GOVT OFFICE( EDUCATION MINISTER), NOT INNOCENT PIPO , WHO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PROBLEM.

ITS LIKE GOING TO THE DENTIST FOR A CAR REPAIRS, OR GOING TO THE BANK TO PRAY,WHICH DOESN

  29. Firstly yal need to undastand that the govt can and will never stop paying students their allowances even if students damaged state house itself BECAUSE THE GOVT USES THE MEAL ALLOWANCE AS A STRATEGIC POLICY TO GET DONOR AID.and students are highly aware of that..furthermore the govt benefits more by giving these LOANS to students since in someway it actualy reduces issues of braindrain since students on loan are bound to work in zambia til thy pay the LOAN BACK with 10 percent interest.almost 80 million kwacha..thus it angers students when thr allowance is delyd sinc tz donor aid and a loan to be paid with interest.

  30. #27 Sharp shooter, hello.

At first I also shared your current views re. the students’ behavior but now I am beginning to understand them. When they cry out, nothing ever changes, so maybe rioting is the only way for them to be heard.
What’s the point in having a University if the government can’t sustain the upkeep of it’s students? I know we are not as wealthy as other countries but if we don’t invest in education, we’ll be even poorer in future. I question the soundness of our government with regards to academic matters.

  31. We need people to start suing UNZA students for damages. This will help them know that there are consequences to vandalism. Society does not owe these students anything. if anything the students are enjoying tax payers money. Someone, please sue the students or Unza. I am sure lawyers can find grounds for that.

  32. Most of you bloggers are former UNZA students and awere that the majority of students there are poor and come from the districts. You find that some people are so despoerate to get the allowance when it comes that they will wake up and be on the line at 01:00hrs in order to get the money by 11:00hrs.They have already spent the little they came home with during the one month they have been on campus. Joice Nonde must understand that its not all issues she must comment on.

  33. Ba Moze where are you? have you changed identity?

Anyway why did government not pay in time. It takes a very short time time South African hospitals? People should start taking insurance in case UNZA riots

  34. @ #48 Nine Chale….

You knuckle head!, how’s smashing an innocent drivers correlated to that meal allowance(not being paid),

what if the minibus stoned veers off the road into a ditch, tell me how on earth you can justify the (potential)fatalities,

more so to that grieving opharned child or family who may have a parent resulting from this orgy of violence??

IWE! these are not small issues, learn to look at the broader picture,

    engage your thinking faculties okay!

  35. #45 Unza Dean

A person can pay back a loan from anywhere. I have a colleague here who did civil engineering in Germany. His scholarship was turned into a loan while at uni. He’s been paying back that loan while working in Germany and now in the UK. In the UK, students leave university with huge debts due to education loans from the Govt. This does not restrict them to only work in the UK. They pay back over many years.

What matters is having a good system. We can learn from the developed countries. Unless the Govt fully subsidises, loans are a more sustainable way to pay for higher education.

  36. @ # 51.UK-Zed Observer…….

    Spot on bro/sis,

it’s very had to find a sober one(like yourself) on such issues, this sense of entitlement in the average Zambian needs to cease,

infact it doesn’t not end their, after these rascals graduate you still see them screaming for all sorts of favours from the govt, they seldom contribute anything/payback to society,

they are not innovative or creative at all, cant run a basic business etc

they get laons from the banks and immidiately spend them on consumerables like cars, beer etc.. only to turn and cry for an enabling environment from govt,

i could go on and on, but all am saying is this entitlement syndrome has to stop at some poi

  37. Unza students have been rioting for many years, even as far back as the 1980s, over meal allowances. By now we should have found a way of sorting this issue. After all, we have a lot of ex-Unza graduates in Govt and other sectors. They fully understand the issues.

Would anyone know what is in place now to make sure that the food needs of students are taken care of. In the UK, this has been done thru Govt grants and loans. It seems to be working.

How about other countries. Can we learn from those who have studied in USA, Japan, Russia etc.

And how do colleges in Zambia do it. And private universities.

  38. @ #55. Unza dean ….

Why should i pay high a insurance premium because of some crazy nutter on the loose,

infact i would urge the govt to maintain a constant security presence there,

open up a mini army baracks or police post of some sort

  39. #57 Lusakan Gigolo

I am a brother. Thanks. I like sharing ideas with other people. You just never know it may help someone out there.

  40. @ # 58.UK-Zed Observer

I think in the countries you mention the average student understands that those allowances are not manner or a right(entitlement) perse but rather an expense,

both on the part of the BOMA and HIMSELF(loan), hence most would rather opt out of going to uni for fear tying themselves up to debt well up into their 4Os, by then they will incurred mortgage debts, car loans, kids etc

i’ve actually met some who’ve opted to pay themselves through uni by working to avoid debt,

u will find most that get this money spend it wisely, as opppsed to those back hme

back home this nutters treat this manner from heaven, why? they are university students(which’s nonsense)

  41. How can LT publish such (this) news? Even the people commenting on UNZA stuff to appear on news have nothing to do…

Its not any news at all… LT upload another story…

This isnt any developmental at all… It does help in any way!!!

Unza has always been like this…

  42. it beats my intelligence to understand why these so called creme dela creme should resort to violent means in order to engage govt.why attack innocent citizens 4 God’s sake? it’s like a wife venting her anger on children after differing with her hubby. Where’s is that cop who fires live bullets kanshi?

  43. i just heard that some UNZA guys are outside my office block, they are also damaging pipos cars. :o:o

From here they are looking for you guys, so watch out.

  44. ba joy you look attracting on that pic its only that yo name is ugly nonde makes 1 2 wounder what gogo is that.nice lips

  45. And mind you places like the US, the worlds richest nation, such are few and far apart not to mention free,

they’re tied to giving back, mostly directly to the uni or college in one way or the other,

hence forth we’ve sports scholarships, athletics etc because the uni knowledge if say their (american) football team makes it NFL championship they stand to make money(usually millions) from participating plus endorsements from major companies etc,

others can also be working in the commmunity eg civic awareness during holidays/vacations, conducting research for the uni say in rural areas e.g on agriculture,
information which the uni sells to companies, journals etc

  46. #63 Lusakan Gigolo

I agree with you. The mentality of our Unza students is not good. They think allowances are manner. May be they should introduce a module at Unza where students will be taught the right way to look at these allowances. They should know that students in donor countries pay something towards education.

It’s sad that the very most educated of Zambia have such aweful mentality and view of support while learning. Intellect and wisdom not mixing well here.

  47. All in all this is not free money as these scroungers back home believe, and it’s time somebody made them realise this

There’s no free ride in life

  48. We should just accept the fact that government has lamentably failed to fund UNZA and that the public as stakeholders in the smooth running of the UNZA has to do something! We cant go on like this! Government has never prioritized education. I understand UNZA is now fee paying and we cant afford to keep closing every time the students are preparing for exams! ! Lets have a special tax sort out these issues.

  49. vala jombo monko ehh vala jombo moma eeh!!
Can u allow the kids to enjoy wat we have all enjoyed during our tym at UNZA ala! any former student wil b wise enough not to use GER wen there is a riot so…. nway govt doesnt listen no matter how much u dialogue and any1 who is a social scientist knows tht the means justifies the end. so if the viva led to them getting thier money..so b it.
wen u c UNZA coming…(UNZA coming) u wil c police running (police running) where??? to Bogoland.someone plz help me!!!
Viva moma! viva monko! viva UNZASU! viva student power!!! viva viva viva!!

  50. ‘Mrs. Nonde-Simukoko said it would always be better for the students to use the right channel when aggrieved on certain issues other than resorting to riotous behaviour.’

Mrs J. Nonde-Simukoko who long have students like Mr Cardson Kabwe been requesting that his sponsors the 17 year old MMD GRZ should help him with $17000 for him to undergo a medical heart operation in Russia? Our fellow Citizen is in Russia far away from home without anyone to help him at his bedside and has been missing classes for about $ months now. He has used every known GRZ channel to try and get help soonest but alas only 1 and half months are remaining before his his heart condition gets out of hand as prescribed

  51. Baby C. :-h

Bushe ababafana, sibanabalundile bc a moth after RB was sworn in. Nichani kansi vyongo so..I am in the dark.%-(

  52. @ #72. Baby C,

There’s already an ‘indirect tax’ on the citizenry, the money being paid to students (albeit late) is from the tax payer…. the tax payer is already footing that bill,

and to rub chilli to injury he’s being harassed by these thugs for what? for simply using great east rd, owning a car, boarding a minus etc

Please don’t burden us with more taxes, mind you very few people pay tax in Zambia, you’re looking at 15% of the population only,

these are mostly foulkes who’ve the misfortune of being formal employment

  53. 75. continued.

… by the able Russian Doctors.
It has been $ months of no attention form the MMD GRZ and what else do you expect from Mr Cardson Kabwe and those other Zambian Students at his sick bedside to do, if the MMD GRZ does not do what is needful in the next few days. Isn’t it a ROIT at the Zambian Embassy in Moscow like I have read from their LT postings?
The scenario with Mr C. Kabwe is similar in nature to the UNZA students and like enough for them, they are in Zambia and near to the necessary offices.
So, instead of castigating them with words that won’t help the situation, please turn to the MMD failed GRZ and ask them to do their obligations on timem so that we shun such.

  54. #74
    I am suspicious!
    Ok Viiiiiiiiiiiiiiva Monko. Viiiivaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Strategy No. 1. charge to the roadside and stone a car of your choice!….vivaaaah
Strategy No. 2. Charge to Mutale Chanda’s office and empty the bin on his desk..viiiiva.
All was WRONG<WRONG APPROACH TO ISSUES

  55. Iwe chi #54 Lusaka Gigolo, why call me knuckle-head? If you differ with me in opinnion, just drop your views without getting personal.
I’m not in the mood to condone insults today. I’m wasting so much time & energy on this blog fending off bad attitude of some haters against me and my brother Jamaco.
Don’t force me to say things that I normally never say. I think I refrain from this site for while. Too much hate going on.

  56. Unza students behave like stray dogs that bark at you when you don’t feed them . They act as if it’s their heaven sent right to receive handouts. I do not think they know how fortunate they are to receive free money like that. If they so want to be fed why not give them kambwiliz and seeds then let them cultivate tu ‘minda’ and they can harvest their own food. That will teach them how to eat some humble pie

  57. @ #78. Maestro Hhehhehhehhe,

    How’s HH by the way,
thanks for highlighting the plight of the brother in that far off land my prayers are with him, thank god he’s got friends on his bedside to comfort and provide the much needed reassurance,

such acts though seemingly trivial do go a long way in alievating his condition and do make a difference, once more thanks and please carry on.

NB: however as to your suggestion of taking seige of the Zambian embassy in Moscow, i can only hope that never comes to fruition as the Russian authorities will not hesitate to deal with you ruthlessly, please remember you are in far off land, were human rights exist at a bare minimum.

  58. @ #78.Maestro Hhehhehhehhe….(83 contd)

Moreover you’re merely holders of the little black book(Zambian passort)atleast most of you i assume, that in itself condemns you to not receiving any protection at all, be it the media or international bodies,

atleast the kind that would be given to western nationals, so you can see that such an endavour wouldn’t fruitless be folly, however desparate or fustrated you are please desist from it..

infact just the other day zimbabwean protestors were fired at, brutally beaten and arrested in Thswane(pretoria) for protesting at the inter party talks in South Afrika.

oncemore please don’t give up the fight, and god bless the brother

  59. When Banda wanted to be elected President, money for Bye-election was easily available, why should not money for paltry student allowances be unavailable?Fukula, mudala Mu Zamtrop.Ask FTJ for the key

  60. @# 81 Nine Chale,

No need to whine, grow up prove me wrong(if you’re not a knuckle head)

stand and up defend your ideas, tell us how savagely brutalising and assualting innocent by standers and damaging property translates to justice and warrants a sympathetic ear?…i honestly want know

Yes anyone applauding and cheering such stone age behaviour which could potentially maim, disble or end a human life is a knuckle head!! he must have a chicken brain

Listen it’s one thing to cheer thugs from the comfort of the diaspora on a keyboard than to face those stones in your head/face and burning tyres on the ground, put yourself in the shoes of the elderly fleeing from these baboons

    :)>-

  61. blah blah blah … you are not in our shoes so don’t judge us!%-( I am a student and never condemn UNZA students when they riot. I’m no violent person but it seems it’s the only language the gvt understands.gvt always pays the students after riots, doesn’t you 5 senses tell you something here(anyway if you have 5 senses at all)? this is just negligence on the part of the gvt, lack of commitment at its utmost. i say so long the gvt does not want to change their language, then let the students continue using the language the gvt understands.

  62. TO ALL OF YOU UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA STUDENTS: You are not the only ones suffering in the country. Although we all understand the uniqueness of your circumstances, there is no justification for behaving like teenagers!! You have now coimpletely exhausted any goodwill you have historical enjoyed from the general Zambian public, and it is time you started behaving like adults. Stop being silly!!!!!

  63. Ba monk na ba Moma, pliz find a better way of airing your grievances. Its ok for you to lock da entrance to your place but pliz leave the great east road alone. POWER TO THE PEOPLE.

  64. i wonder why such “intelligent” people get to be violent without using their wisdom first. It has become a hobby for others and they are earning a good living by being at the university.
Oobo mbusili mbobacita bantu aaba. how do you damage private property in the name of wanting better meal allowances. These are the same people that are inefficient when employed after being at UNZA. They carry that mentality with them, a mentality that does not befit varsity people. violence is no means an answer to it.
Nzala nkoili koonse, ino kuti tutalike kuba boobo inga cisi caba buti? Should pensioneers also rioting?

    Kamunga kamuba aamano, cce!!

  65. @ #91.the critic,

I blame myself, i now understand, such a pity though…… i took it for granted that anything calling itself ‘student’ had the basic tennets to discern fellow VICTIM(public) from OPPRESSER(govt),

Instead ‘it’ pounces on the fellow VICTIM whose probably subjected to the same fate or worse from the same OPPRESSER(govt), and ‘it’ also has the audacity to brag about such a wank feast,..So sad!

I pity all the mothers and fathers being harassed for nothing more so after relinquishing their tax to support the fellow VICTIM(student) who will only serve to pounce on them without butting an eye lid for nothing that is their making,..

    What has society come to

  66. @ #94. Tonga Muchende….

Am with you but sadly not everything that is SCHOOLED or has sat in classroom for donkey years canbe called EDUCATED,

Being educated means being a better citizen above anthing else, so sad;)

  67. #94 you wonder why such “intelligent” people get to be violent without using their wisdom first.?

the very reason why someone would name himself Tonga Bull without using his wisdom first.

  68. 83. Lusakan Gigolo, thank you for your stuff.

Firstly, it is my hope that president HH is doing well. i haven’t asked my sources about him in quite a time say one week.
On the students in Russia, please be advised that it is not me who intends to go and riot at the Zambian Embassy in Moscow. I am a privately sponsored student in the Europe Union and have nothing to do with schooling in Russia- atleast at the moment. So, please direct that advice to Zambian Students in Russia who plan to do such a thing and not me. I only read about it in one of the LT threads where one students was mentioning that they GRZ Zambian Student Community in Russia must demonstrate beating the staff there.

  69. Unza students should work in state farms during holidays and they must pay for any damages, most students work and finance studies and accomodation in europe. **==**==

  70. Hey moscow students!behave like human beings and dont pritend.
you are always at the embassy sweet talking for $50…UNZA guys are right and well reasoning man can tell.bcoz of them,GRZ has sent ur money today ….leave alone ayo amule yabili trying to condemn students..
