Five hundred police officers will on today be deployed at the Lusaka High Court, ahead of the Supreme court ruling on a petition to recount last year’s Presidential elections.
Acting Inspector General of Police, Francis Kabonde, says an additional five hundred officers will be on standby to maintain law and order.
The petition has been presented to the supreme court by the opposition Patriotic Front, which is asking the Court to recount the 2008 Presidental ballots.
Mr. Kabonde told journalists in Lusaka that the Police will not tolerate disorderly conduct around the High Court premises during and after the ruling.
And Mr. Kabonde disclosed that the Police service has increased rewards to people who give up illegal firearms.
The amount has gone up from two hundred thousand Kwacha to three hundred thousand Kwacha.
He said 76 million Kwacha has been set aside for the exercise,this year.
The Zambia police service has collected over four hundred illegal firearms in two years and will destroy them during the course of the year.

For HH I am not sure what his strategy is really like. He is not proactive on issues. I for one would have loved a more active HH but so far I find him rather reserved, almost as though he expects things to serve themselves before him. Also, he has to do something about the perceived ‘tribalist’ tendency he has. He is not tribalist I know that, but he has not managed to reorganise his party to reflect a truly neutral mix. I wonder what he needs to do to escape this image for 2011. He may have to change his group of followers to a more mixed society. Yes HH is one of them but could do better by being more interested in issues affecting non tongas as a way to demonstrate this.

This is will be good as the U-Team will hold a UPND Party GENERAL ASSEMBLY to elect new leadership for the following 5 years that will solve all party problems and seek to form a FRESH GRZ that will bring real economic development to Zambia.
With the support of all Zambians,we can help any then UPND presidential and Parliamentary candidates to form a brand new GRZ in 2011 without a history of characters that sponsored the macheting of fellow Zambians in Lusaka’s Chawama compound,3rd Term,etc.
207 Hola!, on “You and I (and most bloggers) have lost touch of the realities in Zambia.I have the choice of what to eat or wear where as in Zambia,it is a matter of what are we going to eat?” I disagree with you as people like me were in Zambia last year in August being bashed by the dusty since tar roads are rare.
So, while some of the foreign based LT bloggers have lost touch with the activities in Zambia, I personally haven’t as I was there recently and also here from my family and friends on what is happening on the ground at home.
