Elephants Given a Mauling

Herve Renard’s Zambia made their best possible start in the inaugural CHAN tournament when they outclassed hosts and 10-man Cote d’Ivoire 3-0 in Abidjan on Sunday evening to go top of Group A.

Zambia and Senegal are level on 3 points but the former lead Group A thanks to a better goal difference after the latter beat Tanzania 1-0 in the late match at the same venue through a 30 minute header from Mamadou Traoure.

And Zambia were efficient throughtout against a poor opponent who qualified automatically as CHAN hosts.

Moreover, the void in experience played a major factor in Cote d’Ivoire’s defeat of a side whose home-based players have little high-level national team mileage.

Meanwhile, Zambia secured their Group A win thanks to a hat-trick from Zanaco striker Given Sunguluma.

Singuluma’s first goal came in the 35th minute after a well work move started by Lusaka Dynamos midfielder William Njobvu from the halfway line on the right wing before passing the ball to Ignatius Lwipa who placed it in the path of his club teammate lurking on the near far post to make it 1-0.

Lwipa will feel a little hard done by after his 40th minute header was unfairly ruled for off-side to see Zambia go 1-0 into the break.

Cote d’Ivoire’s best chance of the first half came in the 24th minute when Stade Abidjan striker Florent Sahouré saw his free kick parried for a corner that was wasted.

Zambia stretched their lead in the 48th minute again Lwipa the provider that saw Singuluma tap-in past the impressive ASEC Mimosa goalkeeper Vincent Angban who was let down for most of the match by some awful defending by his backline throughout the game.

A frustrated Cote d’Ivoire were later reduced to 10 men in the 78th minute after Cote d’Ivoire lost their best outfield player in Sahoure who was red carded for an off the ball incident involving Njobvu.

Zambia wrapped up a fine performance with Singuluma benefiting from a slick move from second half substitute Kennedy Mudenda who threaded the ball to the striker who finished off on the rebound.

Senegal and Zambia face each other in game two on Wednesday at 18:00 in Abidjan while winless sides Tanzania and Cote d’Ivoire at 21:00 at the same venue.

  1. Ba LT u should have writen this story yesterday immediately afetr the game for the info to be appreciated, especially those outside zambia that did not watch the game. why this Late. It was on TV Boring ZNBC so u mean you have just learnt about the score now. lol improve your act on covering urgent issues like score lines and political issues. Dont wait for Zanis.

  2. Here we go boys and weldone . We are proud of you and the whole Zambian communities throughout the world wish you all the best and good luck.Chipolopolo boys.

  3. New look LT, hope no more “you are posting too fast” from now on…..anyway, the boys played very well and I think we are on the right path. It could be too early to say this but what I saw last night was quite good. Well done boys and lets stay focused, its Senegal next.

  4. Ngani Ba Zambia…this is like final…having won one game is enough for our poorly motivated team to go to sleep… you will see the next game. We need to develop a culture of winning.. not just one game but the tourney.

    • I know how negative u are my friend u will never appreciate, thats the reason why u are living hillbrow coz u have nothing to offer

  5. great boys, just make sure that the CECAFA saga does not repeat this time around,it’s not how we start but how we finish.we are behind you guys, plz make us proud, all the best on wednesday.

  6. Morning all! This is good. Manje we need to continue. History has shown that we start beautifully and end miserably. Things must change. No dozing. Forget about the bonus first. Others are already budgeting!

  7. Well done boys, but don’t go to sleep as you have done in the past. This is a tournament and you should win every game.

  8. I agree with number 9, the chaps will go to sleep especially after receiving the promoised US$400 winning bonus…baliya mukunwa…Its so embarrasing to learn that GOVT has promised them US$750 if they team wins the cup..Thats just ZMK4,100,000 thanks to the depreciated kwacha otherwise it cud havebeen ZMK3,000,000…

  9. Good start. I dont know whether its our team that was good or we had a bad opponent. Any hhow, I will be more convinced when they beat senegal.

  10. this cant go without my comment the guys played well. these guys they train unlike thoz we call professionals like mbesuma who just seat on the beanch i think we shud just be using local players mwee & invite only five pros like the way it used to be in Kalus days we only had 3 pros and we were doing well. congrats guys be focused

  11. this is a gud start…..hope they do hold on their from and do even more better later. All then best to the players for once putting the flag of Zambia high up there.

  12. That was a good game. I’ve never seen the Zambian team play with such determination in a long time. It was an all attack game upto to the last whistle – something that has been lacking in our team.

I agree with most comments that the boys will probably go to sleep after that win. This has happened before. The team needs a Psycologist to work on the minds of those boys. Our team lacks discipline & consistence. With that kind of skill & the minds properly prepared psycologically, Zambia can beat any team in that tournament.

  13. #17,why are yu already talking -ves,if that will be given as final wining bonus, that is ok.in preliminary round, winning bonus is US400,final @US750 is quite fair.stop this money issue now,we can lobby fo more if we have the trophy at hand.gogogogo!! copper bullets!die a little fo mother zambia!!

    • mwana ndalama ni motivation ya bwino. awe ine if they say to iraq Kabul and pa table baika 20million dollar niyenda. ha ha ha ha

  14. This was a good start and we continue supporting the team. Still, do not put your hopes in the team in as much as winning is concern. Remember a win is a MIRACLE, draw, is hard work and a loss hard lack Zambia.
Support them atleast to win in every game and Miracle might happen

  15. Thanks to the ever working team its zambian Premiership the boys are super charged i edge all Z pipo to rally behind the team bakalalila. Senegal lishena fwe

  16. Well done bioz, the technical bench and the officialz, keep up the good work. The game was so nice I thot it lasted 75 minutes!

  17. THE REAL GAME IS ON WEDNESDAY WHEN WE MEET THE TERANGA LIONS.
THE ELEPHANTS WERE TOO HEAVY TO PLAY THE CHIPOLOPOLO BULLETS, WELL DONE BOYS.

  18. WHAT A SHOCK, ZAMBIA BEATING THE ELEPHANTS IN THEIR OWN BACK-YARD?? THE IVORIANS HAD BAD MASHAMO, AS ZAMBIA PLAYED WELL. REAL GAME WILL SHOW US THE TRUE TEAM ON WEDNESDAY WHEN WE MEET THE TERANGA LIONS

  19. SENE-SENE IS COMING ON WEDNESDAY, THEN THE REAL TEAM SHALL BE KNOWN, LETS WAIT AND SEE. A DRAW MAY BE THE BEST RESULT FOR ZAMBIA, WINNING WILL BE A MIRACLE, UNLESS SAKUWAHA WILL PLAY. VIVA SAKUWAHA, HE IS A POWERFUL STRIKER, VIVA SAKUWAHA

  20. Hmmmmmm!! dont be excited dears! this dream will be short lived! I no longer trust these boys! They always start very well but ……

  21. Good start though we need to remain focused. The first game is important. Beating the hosts in their backward was really sweet. Let us see how we play in the next game

  22. Our real test will come against Senegal and this game will prove to be vital to the qualification of the team.More over,Senegal are highly technical and we should be wary not to be reluctant.

    • Senegal will not be a very big problem , the domestic league is just as weak as the KCM premier league .The only advantage they have is that the tournament is being staged on the west African soil.

    • I concur with Luapula Fish. Senegal local players are not as good as we think. Teams like Zesco, GBFC, Warriors or Arrows can hammer any of the Senegalese club teams there.
I predict a Chipolopolo win over the Senegalese. It will be Tanzania who will try to give us problems as they know our style and system.

  23. keep the flame high guys win or lose Zambia is our country. i was watching A1 GP yesterday ku Kyalami. the first ever GP so they said. i SA boy was out of the race but his pipo kept on supporting him. they kept on replying his race and for once i thought he had won. all in all we have to support our team through thick and thin.
Guys iyi system ya new or upgrade izavuta maka maka ba PRAGMA fimo fimo who writes a book when trying to xplain something trivial.

  24. Well done for beating the HOST in front of their President including two other visiting Presidents in attendance. I’,m sure NyamaSoya was just too tired to have gone after all those condemned fruitless trips he undertook to nap.
Well Senegal on Wednesday will be another test. we win it, we qualify to the semi finals.
Tana is always overating self & mis-behaves. live him out. This is second time he is doing this economic driven flip flop

  25. I dont agree with #29 on one issue. Money is a big factor in motivation never make a mistake about that. This is the time FAZ and Govt can make or break with with issues of money. What if you tell the boys “the winning bonus is this but coz of the way you played, its decided we doubt it ” and pay them their and then. This is a very important national issue and I know the cost will definately be far less than the cost one bye election!! Lets for once do the right thing please mwebuteko kwapapata!! The boys reminded me of what has gone before when Z was 2rd in africa on the FIFA ranking from Nigeria. Where have we lost it. Rehard is doing a good job so far. It takes some time to build a…

  26. Lets not get over confident like we do in the past!! Let’s keep our feet on the ground and stay focused. All too often in the past a good result is followed by a dire result!

    • Man that cash little as it may be can make a big difference in someone’s life back here in Zed. What you may see as peanuts to some is a whole year’s earnings I tell you. So lets just encourage the buys to remain formidable like yesterday. Lets not be dissuaded by the revenue. They have scouts to attract out there too.

  27. nice start boys!lets hope baiche tamwaka chinje…..kuyamba mumayamba bwino, manje poor finishing”….keep it up bafikkala!

  28. ### 55 Lets not get over confident like we do in the past!! Let’s keep our feet on the ground and stay focused. All too often in the past a good result is followed by a dire result!

  29. nine chale ,how are you?were is lady chiza, maestro, baby c…..and all other bloggers?
I miss DOGFATHER …too bad the DOG was banned by LT.

  30. I agree with #29. I have also NEVER seen Zambia play such a great game in a very long time. It has actually rejuvenated my interest in Zambia’s football. Well done boys.

  31. do not be happy, zambia is expected to loose to Tanzania….. then you will be quite….when you expect zambia to win they loose, wait and see!!!!

  32. The boys are starting okay hope Tana wont confuse the system when he is in. we hope they will do us proud by hamering the Senegalies. They are fast at long passes so let us watch out from long balls

  33. I like the way we have started this tournament. We are on the right track and the boys need alot of support to realise the dream of silverware which has eluded us for a long time. Most of the teams at this inaugural CHAN have alot of talent plying their trade in Europe depleting their leagues at home. Just look at Ivory Coast, so it’s advantage Zambia!

  34. Good job Chipolopolo boys or men. I hope you will carry on doing well as I expect nothing less than taking the CHAN Cup home to Zambia. All the very best and keep well.

  35. Mr Renard, our team has a histoy of good beginnings and bad endings,so pliz focus on the nxt games…..Party after mission accomplished.

  36. Yaa! Its tough guys. I watched senegal against Tanzania. Its 50 50 against zambia. They are fast and use long balls we call it chidonu pa zed. If Tana’ll b there that ‘ll be fine. But it requires hard work and seriousness to win each game as it comes.
