Mealie meal syphoned out of Luangwa

Share

A senior government official in Luangwa District has called on the Immigration Department and Zambia Revenue Authority to find ways of controlling the alleged illegal exportation of mealie-meal into neighboring Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Luangwa District Commissioner, Captain Stanislaus Kalunga, made the call during a meeting held in the council chamber, saying he has observed that a lot of mealie-meal was going out of the district into neighboring Mozambique and Zimbabwe at the expense of Zambians.

Capt Kalunga said government is working tirelessly to ensure that its people have the staple food and it is its wish that the people of Zambia benefit from its policies.

He said there was a lot of mealie-meal going into Mozambique in exchange of fish that was denying the people of Luangwa access to the staple food.

The District Commissioner appealed to the Immigration Department and the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) to put in measures of controlling this trend of Zambians taking mealie-meal into Mozambique in exchange for fish.

    • RB You should make your message clear!! you once called upon Zambians to share with its neighboring countries like Zimbabwe!! It is good to share but please make proper regulations!! Things are being done only at the expense of Zambians because Zimbabweans are paying in US Dollars!! Please implement local measures that will make selling Mealie meal to locals beneficial!! For as long as there is not enough to feed the country, even the little that we have will be sold outside illegally just to get forex!! I am sure it is not an easy task to handle, but the people will be grateful if these Problems are tackled at grass root level, instead of just giving out warnings to those involved!!

    • Iwe LT, nikamba nkhani ya Ndiyo ine. Ka nsima kafunika ndiyo, ka? RB said we should share. When we share, ati ni smuggling! We exchange for relish, ati ni smuggling at the expense of fimo fimo!

  1. The reason is simple: people have no money because there is no employment. Give them jobs and smuggling will stop. Very few cases we recorded before the so called economic melt down.

  2. MMD PLEASE STOP MAKING EXCUSES AND MAKE MEALIE MEAL AVAILABLE. IF YOU FLOOD THE MARKET THERE WONT BE A SHORTAGE. YOU KEEP POITING FINGERS AT NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES BUT THE PROBLEM IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE FAILED TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE STOCKS LOCALLY. BAMAMBALA TWANAKA LISTENING TO YOUR NONSENSE.

  3. It seems all borders are leaking out mealie meal. A vast potential to make money, this country failed to maximise earning of Forex by growing enough to export. well typical Zambia even the water from the Zambezi, we fail to harness it for food production. It ends up in the Indian Ocean.
