Don’t bribe employees to get contracts , KCM tells suppliers

KONKOLA Copper Mines (KCM) has assured its suppliers and contractors that no contract will be cancelled for refusing to give a bribe to any of the company’s employees.

KCM Group security manager, Ernest Mubita said suppliers and contractors should not indulge in any corrupt activities with KCM employees and assured them that no one would have his or her contract cancelled for refusing to bribe any employee of the company.

Mr Mubita was speaking yesterday at the KCM security award presentation parade held at the KCM mine club ground in Chingola.

The deserving security officers were given motorbikes, bicycles, fridges and other household goods as rewards for the good work in protecting the mining company’s property.

Mr Mubita said suppliers and contractors should help to curb corruption, thefts and other dubious activities at any division of KCM by ensuring that they reported the matter to the security agencies of the mining company.

“The evil storm called crime has invaded all business organisations with very big waves called theft, fraud, corruption, abuse, misuse, and wastage and this is why, I am urging contractors and suppliers to help us, fight these crimes, especially corruption, which is a very devastative scourge.

“I am assuring the suppliers and contractors that no one will have his or her contract cancelled for refusing to give a bribe to any of the KCM employees. We need concerted efforts to fight vices that are retrogressive to economic revival and national development,” Mr Mubita said.

He said his department would remain steadfast, strong, brave, focused and impartial in fighting crime to save the company from losing its valuable and critical property and time.

He said the good work that his team was doing, had attracted intimidation from the crime perpetrators.

“So far, four houses belonging to some of these officers were targeted and attacked between 2005 and 2009. One of the houses was blasted using petrol bombs, whereas the other was reduced to rubble by a criminal mob, majority of these officers have received both verbal and written threats due to the courageous efforts that they are putting into fighting crime,” Mr Mubita said.

And speaking later, KCM chief executive officer, Kishore Kumar said all KCM employees should ensure that every property and materials purchased by KCM was put to the intended use and should ensure that no KCM property was stolen, abused, misused, vandalised or wasted.

Mr Kumar said he was happy that security officers had always been alert and vigilant in ensuring that property of KCM was well secured and protected.

Mr Kumar said because of their alertness and vigilance, some security officers were being physically attacked or threatened by criminals.

He assured those security officers that were being threatened that the company would support and protect them, saying he had directed the Group Security manager to ensure that protection was given to all deserving officers.

“To you officers, I say congratulations and continue working even harder than before like the Group Security manager had said. The tokens you have received cannot be compared to the value of property that you continue protecting in these difficult conditions, but these are just tokens of appreciation and recognition for your exemplary performance in executing your duties,” he said.-Times of Zambia

  1. Thats the way it should be Mr Ernest Mubita. Just continue hammering the nail on the head for ZEDI to have any change.

  2. Too late boss, only a fool would listen to such advise. It is simple, if you dont bribe you dont get nothing.

  3. And “jelabos” should equally reduce supplying umwela or “re-supplying” goods already in KCM warehouse ( I mean selling what has been stolen from KCM) following this assurance.

  4. Ba LT, mulechinga word s.t.o.l.e.n? Why.

    #7 Ba Thenjiwe,

  5. Whether bribery and corruption have been around in Zambia for a long time, that does not mean we shoudn’t fight it now. We have to start somewhere!! What’s needed is commitment from people in positions of influence, both at company and national level. I know change is always difficult, hence the pessimists on this blog. But we can’t just through up hands in the air and hope for some heavenly savior to come and deliver us from corruption, bribery, and the like. What KCM has embarked on should be encouraged and emulated by all who are serious about fighting this scourge, both in private and public sectors. IF THIS IS JUST A SONG, THEN LET IT BE SUNG OVER AND OVER AGAIN UNTIL IT SINKS IN—-the culture of conniving and bribery got to go!!! It retards a lot of progress and development.

  6. The Indians will just convert all our resources into cash and move on. The expansion projects they are undertaking is just to completely finish all our GOD given resources and once they finist extracting our copper reserves, they will definately move away. For your imformation, VEDANTA is putting up the Vedanta University in India which will be one of the best and biggest University in Asia, 65% of the money being is used to do the Projects is coming from our own KCM( Nchanga & Konkola Copper Mines). They frustrated & fired key Zambian personel like Seyuba Paul & Sixtus Mulenga so that they dont face any problem in externalizing the profits. They are bringing in own people to take up managerial position.

  7. We must all learn lessons that Investors are just after our Raw Materials. If we run out of raw materials, the sole called investors will certainly leave us. They are putting up the smelters, but eventually they will rape all the natural resources and convert them into cash and pack up leaving us with nothing. Forinstance, Vendanta is using part of the profits realised from KCM to build Vedanta University in India which will be one of the biggest Universities in ASIA and we will continue to only two poor Universities in Zambia.
At KCM they frustrated and fired credible people like Sixtus Mulenga, Seyuba Paul and many more so that they could not face any resistance in making decisions that favours them (Indians).

  8. We need a leader who will stand for the Zambian People. For me i think 2011 is too far. We need a leader who will give Zambians hope for a better tomorrow. We need a leader who will transform the Country and bring it in the path of economical growth. The current government is behaving as though Zambia is about to shift to somewhere else. This has completely annoyed most of us.

I end by saying that Zambia is for Zambians.

  9. Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) PLC introduced the Global Leadership Program. The program was introduced to have the Vedanta group companies employees to get exposed, share and learn best practices elsewhere. Eversince the program was introduced, we have seen and witnessed Zambians coming to India and same number of Indians going to Zambia. The program duration is only one year. Therefore, after a period of one year zambians come back whilst the Indians never comeback and are given managerial positions. This has continued to go on for the fourth year now. The indians easily get work permitt extention in zambia probably because of rotten laws or incompetent and corrupt government officials. They are given managerial positions and the
