SABMiller Africa has announced that its operating subsidiary in Zambia, Heinrich`s Syndicate Limited, has entered into an agreement with Trade Kings Limited to acquire its Maheu business for a total cash consideration of approximately US$19.25 million. The transaction includes the purchase of the Maheu brand`Super Maheu No.1` which is a non-alcoholic maize drink available in a variety of flavours.

Within Zambia, SABMiller Africa already owns Zambian Breweries Group, the largest clear beer and soft drinks business in the Zambia and 70% of National Breweries Plc which is listed on the Lusaka Stock Exchange (LuSE) and commands
a substantial amount of the opaque beer market.

SABMiller Africa intends to grow the Maheu business throughout Zambia and across a variety of African markets, resulting in both increased sales volumes and further employment opportunities.

Following the completion of the transaction, SABMiller Africa will continue to employ the existing Trade Kings staff engaged in the production of Maheu.

  1. Good if it will be ggod for customers ie quality, customer service, price etc. We customers dont care who owns what.

Here in the UK, just yesterday Kraft of USA proposed to buy up Cadbury, the British chocolate maker for $10bn. Just today T-Mobile and Orange mobile phones providers announced to merge, to take up 37% share of the UK cellular phone market.

Hope SABmiller will add good value to Maheu.

  2. Its too much of Sabmiller taking over the bevereage industry,we need competition. This is Monopoly.Jst taste the Zambian cocacola, tasteless even Zimbabwe’s & Tanzania’s are far much better

  3. Yes these are some of the issues we need not malabishi people saying teta has left a gap which gap i.d.i.ots look at Solwezi there is no development no manufacturing companies wait until all mines close down thats when you will know what development is. Currently things are booming but after the close there will be no employment opportunities, expensive houses will have no one to rent them many will sales their houses and go back to where they came from. Locals in north western cry for manufucturing companies in case the mines close at least some people will get jobs and be able to sustain their future.

  4. The muscle of SABmiller in termz of adhering to quality and marketing/distribution strategy cannot be over emphasized. What we may not be sure about iz what theze wholesome acquizitions will do to the beverage industry in termz of competition.

  5. In the end they just had to buy off a competitors brand! The National breweries Maheu failed to catch on,despite better packaging & maybe even better quality.Thing is super Maheu#1 is better advertised, reasonably priced and not restricted to only Spar and Shoprite. This is what Sabmiller should bear in mind as they take over the brand. For the asian guy who’s selling:Plough back, dont externalise the money

  6. These Boers have now absolute monolopoly on the Zambian market. Lets hope they would be creating artificial shortages in order to push up prices. Even ZCC will do nothing its a toothless bull dog. These SUBMiller AFrica chaps are going to make a lot of money from the Maheu business and will recoup the return on their investmensts in a very short time. Trade kings walking away with a cool US$19.25M. Thats a fair deal based on my analysis they should have offerred US$25M.

  7. ZCC shouldn’t give a go-ahead for this transaction because SAB Miller is monopolising the drinks industry in Zambia. Unless there is another local producer of Maheu.

  8. Only those that understand the disadvantages of foreign companies acquiring the local companies will be bitterly angry. The SAB acquired Zambian Breweries and made sure that mosi is still being produced, but they expert their Castle.I attended one presentation were the said company in Namibia wanted to acquire the Namibian breweries and their were refused. To my suprise, they used zambia as a case study…… wake up zedians! This is a bad development for zambia

  9. The super maheu is also sold in Botswana and other African countries. So means more sales to those countries its a good move for them. I just hope the government of Zambia will be getting taxes so the country could develop better.

  10. UN Says New Currency Is Needed to Fix Broken ‘Confidence Game’

Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) — The dollar’s role in international trade should be reduced by establishing a new currency to protect emerging markets from the “confidence game” of financial speculation, the United Nations said.

UN countries should agree on the creation of a global reserve bank to issue the currency and to monitor the national exchange rates of its members, the Geneva-based UN Conference on Trade and Development said today in a report.

  11. Good news for the ailing economy but only hope the loot will not be externalised. But wish they had started their own brand it would have been a very good move in terms of competition. SABMiller will now have a monopoly in the beverages on the market. Guess ni competion, at least tu jilijili banned.

  12. SABMiller wants to destroy our country completely.Super maheu no1 is a pride of Zambia.Malawian,Kenyans,Tanzanians and Ugandan friends of my mine like Super Maheu no1 alot in such that when we visit them, the first thing they ask is if you have brought them Maheu. Now,these South Africans wants to destroy Zambia completely, they want to finish our product and all the money they will be making will be deposited in South African Banks.Shame!

  13. maheu one of the successful businesses in zambia.now sold for 19 million. trade kings you are an inspiration to me congrats for these good achievements

  14. There goes Zambia. Only good at selling even what could have us proud. Look at coca cola,Colgate etc. These brands are earning America more than it could have earned had they sold their brand rights(what it is called) Almost every that starts in Zambia apart from bad governance is quickly given to mazwahule. Do you remember TARINO and what what was done to the brand? The guys that bought it quickly killed it to promote what was originated in their country. Economic sabotage.

  15. No.9 If the ZCC existed they would have stopped SAB miller taking over Opaque beer (National Breweries) and Soft drinks (Zambia Bottlers – Coca cola). You think they would try and stop them now?? Task force should have been investigating the decisions of ZCC coz as far as I am concerned they have committed worse economic crimes than Chiluba

  16. Is this the Heinrich`s Getränkemarkt that I know from Southern Germany? They are the leading distributors of international beer/beverage brands here, so if they are the ones, then this is a big thing. We might just see Mosi & co. on German Supermarket shelves soon, after all Jamaican Red Stripe, East African Eagle, Asian Tsing Tao and a few other foreign beers are available.

  17. Stop whining and change your African mindset! Boer this, Boer that! What are you doing my Zambian brothers? Let’s get up from our lazy, good for nothing ass#s and do something for our country and families! Proud to be an African!

  18. Monopolies are not good for a growing economy. Zambians need to be empowered but with such big competitors in every little venture where will we stand?

  19. $19.5m for maheu ( munkoyo or chibwaantu guys) kudos toTtrade Kings for proper negotiations! from scratch you have built the brand within less than 10 years to the success that it is such that global corporates couldn’t resist to enter this indigenous brew market.

How much was KCM our country’s major copper producer sold for? $10m, $25m or $40m? please remind me again and tell me what the heck ZPA was doing!!

  20. These foreigners have the decency to leave the zambian names in order to give the natives a false sense of ownership and being stake holders . The average zambian is just happy to see the name while consuming without seeing any of the profits being reinvested back into Zambia. Zambian mentality is like giving a chainama patient a picture of a house and then he celebrates that he has a house when in actual fact someone else owns that house

  21. Hats off to Trade Kings.
These Indian guys from Chipata set up a small plant for less than $30,000.All they basically had was 2 Large stainless steel tanks,a formula developed by a guy from the Scientific research centre along the great east road, constant supply of maize meal and business acumen.

They branded their product “Super Maheu”,introduced on the local market and few years later it sold all across the Southern African region.

If SABMiller want $19m for the business then you go ahead and sell it.This is something that local tycoons like BY,Kavindele and other so called Zambian experts failed to see.

I say again,Hats off to Trade Kings.Enjoy the fruits of your hard work………

  22. Trade kings should now Concentrate of the Kafue Steel plant. This will bring some activity to Kafue which is now almost a ghost town. The government has been trying to keep alive Nitrogen Chemicals which died during the Kafupi era.Cheaper fertilizers being imported in by players like Sasol (SA).
So Trade Kings ,do your thing…….

  23. #10………it was reported today on African biz news pa Sky that SABMiller have been given a license in Nambia…..

i can blame our government which is busy giving foreign companies “consentions” saying they are foreign investors at the expense of our own home grown manufacturing business. they should release that the only person who can develop Zambia is zambian’s themselves, those foreigners just come in the country, rent a house, open their business, make their money, send it back to their country and leave….some of them even change their name like 6 times just to get another 5 years tax free trading while the poor local zambia manufacturer is taxed left, right and center.

  24. bring maheu to nigeria… i plan on doing dat. as a nigerian i tasted the drink and totally loved it, the only thing is it needs to be smooth coz d maize particles could put alot of potential consumers off
