Resign if you want convention – Banda

President Rupiah Banda
President Rupiah Banda

PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda has told MMD members agitating for the holding of the national convention to resign from the party and join political parties they think will hold conventions soon.

Mr Banda urged those trying to cause confusion in the party to resign than pretend to be MMD members when they were being used by the party’s enemies.

President Banda said he believed in democracy and that the MMD’s national executive committee (NEC) had, in fact, not yet met to discuss the convention.

Mr Banda was speaking when he addressed a mammoth rally to drum up support for MMD candidate Burton Mugala at Kasama’s President’s Park yesterday.

He said the MMD would do everything necessary to ensure transparency and there was no need for people to incite members to rise against the party over the issue of the convention.

“Those who want the convention and are pressing that it should be held at all costs should resign and join political parties that will hold conventions soon, if any. After all, we are two years away from the 2011 elections and the NEC has not yet met to discuss the matter.

“Do not pretend to be members of the MMD but at the same time you are being used by our enemies to rise against us because when the hour comes to discipline you, those inciting you will not be there for you. In fact, you do not know that they are the same people coming to tell me about you,” Mr Banda said.

At the same rally, Lusaka Province PF chairperson Evaristo Mulenga defected to join the ruling MMD, citing party leader Michael Sata’s dictatorial tendencies as the reason.

He said he did not regret the decision because, as a leader, he had decided not to work with a party which had completely lost the tenets of democracy.

The president welcomed Mr Mulenga, together with the 63 other PF defectors, to the MMD and advised party leaders to ensure they made the new members feel welcome in the party.

He urged the people of Kasama Central to vote for Mr Mugala and avoid voting for PF candidate Geoffrey Mwamba who was allegedly full of lies.

The president also expressed disappointment at the four youths that were arrested after allegedly being paid to go and denounce Government on Radio Mano on Teachers’ Day while masquerading as teachers.

He said he had information that two of them were actually businesspersons while one was a student from Chalimbana. He named them as Peggy Nyirenda, 32, a businesswoman, Chris Mutale, 32, businessman and John Mulenga a student.

Mr Banda wondered why Mr Sata and the UPND president Hakainde Hichilema continued hiding behind each other, instead of coming out in the open and tell the nation who would be the pact’s Presidential candidate for 2011.[quote]

Mr Banda said Mr Sata was blindly riding on Mr Hichilema’s back not knowing the UPND leader was also desperate to become president despite having lost twice.

He said the PF leader was panicking, especially that his party was broke and could not afford to sponsor a candidate. This was the reason why he adopted Mr Mwamba so he could sponsor himself.

The president said Mr Sata and Mr Mwamba knew they had lost support and resorted to issuing tribal sentiments, which had also backfired on them.

The president said suspended UPND Namwala Member of Parliament Robby Chizyuka’s move to denounce the pact in Lusaka yesterday was a major indication that the friendship between the two parties was going nowhere.

He said Mr Sata and Mr Hichilema had secretly printed respective Chitenge materials for their 2011 Presidential campaigns.

Mr Banda also said his Government had embarked on 14 major projects in Kasama Central and that K329.3 billion had been allocated to the area.

  1. RESIGN AND GO AND JOIN THE PF WHO WILL BE HOLDING THEIR CONVENTION TOMMORROW. WE SHALL HOLD OURS AS SOON AS MONEY IS FOUND.

  2. RB now you ve finally come out in the open, the money is there u are just scared to be challenged because you have proved to be a toohthless leader who just believes in inttimidation

  3. Sure thing, RB, interesting to see how old politicians view challenges. What is RB afraid of? There’s enough time to source funds for the convention, unless of course there’s not enough RB to compete against young MMD blood for the seat.
2011 elections will be as though they should have been held 20 years ago: Sata against Ruphiah!

  4. Ba RB you are still a UNIPIST time has going for such NONSES. Convention is a must you are not fit to be presidential material you have proved it yourself. We need a strong and vibrat leader not you. If he is asking people to resign then you are not a good leader my friend. Try to reflect from where you have come from.

  5. MWANAWASA IS THE CAUSED THE PROBLEM WE HAVE NOW. HE RULED THIS COUNTRY LIKE A PURSE OF A STINGY PERSON. HOW THE HELL DO YOU APPOINT SOMEBODY FOR A POSITION HIGH OF A VICE PRESIDENT WHO HAD RESIGNED FROM ACTIVE POLITICS A LONG TIME.THIS IS THE RESULT OF SUCH KIND OF PEOPLE WHO THOUGHT THEY WHERE IMPROVING THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE WHEN IT WAS JUST THE PRICES OF COPPER WHICH IMPROVED AT THAT TIME. BULUYA BULUYA

  6. For the 14 major projects in Kasama Central for K329.3 billion which has been allocated to the area was that included in the 2010 budget. There is a need for a copy of the budget to be documented in a lay man’s language and if possible line by line so that the Zambian tax payers may clearly understand what their money is being used for.

  7. NyamaSoya kanitundila Mubwezeni Kumenzi Banda has finally shown that he is damn scared of any challenge………………………..shame old great granny

  8. Chikali ichesu. Imwe ba mbuzi resign chabe. Ise tifuna kudya mahafu chabe. Viva no convention and viva RP capitals

  9. If it was that easy, it could have started with you resigning from MMD and going back to UNIP or go back to your farm. Since you don’t want to share the national care properly, mukalailepulafye. And this is just the beggining.

  10. This is what the bootlickers like – a president who is not in control, doesnt know what to do and can foresee disaster…..

  11. RUPIAH BANDA WAS BORN IN ZIMBABWE,WHAT DOES THAT MAKE HIM SOME ONE PLEASE TELL US!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. HE FOUND US IN MMD AND THEREFORE HE IS THE ONE SHOULD RESIGN AND REJOIN UNIP. I WARN ZAMBIANS THIS MAN WILL NOT CONCEDE DEFEAT IN 2011 AND INSTEADY WILL UNLEASH KABONDE ON INNOCENT ZAMBIANS

  13. Can common sense prevail for once please. There is no party anywhere in the world be it in the US, UK or whatever country that holds a convention to replace an incumbent leader who is eligible for an election. That is just unheard of. A lot of people on this blog are so naive and under estimate the power of incumbency. The Democrats will certainly not hold their convention for the next election. Would people call the US democratic party undemocratic. George Bush went into his re-election with a cloud of the Iraq war on his head. Do you think there were no republicans who thought they could have done a better job than him. Be level headed. There is no need for MMD convention. It is just a waste of money. Lets have the convention in 2016 when Our president is ineligible to stand

  14. This UNIPIST should resign himself and settle at his God forsaken Farm in God knows where Chipata.
He’s a finished old rag with little UNIPIST mentality. No brains or ideas for that matter….. God in heaven help us and hear our prayers…… This rag metality and speach is utterly useless. Shame RB, and his children should advice him… why are you letting you old man with little brains expose himself stupidly? I would be ashamed if this was my Papa.

  15. #27 BOOT CHAKUTI . WHAT A LIAR YOU ARE. WHICH BRITAIN ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? WE ALSO HAVE BEEN OUT OF ZAMBIA AND WE KNOW WHAT GOES ON THOSE COUNTRIES. DONT FORGET THAT EVEN NOW WE ARE ABLE TO KNOW ALL THESE THINGS BECAUSE OF IT. LIKE THE LATE CHAKOMBOKA WOULD SAY “MMD HAS BECOME SAVAGEFUL LIKE UNIP”

  16. We need a state funeral ASAP! thats the only way Zambia will be redeemed from these i…d…i…o..ts who ve failed to run the country.

  17. Oh shit, it has happened!! Did he just say that, it has confirmed our suspition……Time to go man, When do i get my gratuity.

  18. Finally the UGLY vomit has been exposed.Late Mwanawasa didnot do us good in retrieving this record from the archives. He is taking us back to UNIP days.Zambia I pity you as a nation. What is it that you have done to deserve nicompoops to lead you in this fashion?Zambians let us unite for real purpose to liberate ourselves from this bunch of fools.Mr Banda you have irritated too much and we donot deserve that. You Know that you are a finished man intellectually and you have got nothing to offer our young nation. Please give us a break by being honest with yourself. What have you done so far for the country to be asking for some more time?We are sick and tired of your stupid and foolish utterances. Please do an internal analysis of yourself. You are not the right fit for the job.

  19. MMD CHEIF BOOTLICKER TODAY I AGREE WITH U, BUT RB WAS NOT VOTED FOR IN THE MMD AS A PARTY PRESIDENT HE IS STILL LACKING IN TERMS OF BEING ELECTED ON THE PARTY POSITION IS CURRENTLY HOLDING. MANY OF THE MMD TOP GUNS TOO NEED TO BE CHALLENGED AT THE CONVENTION AS THEIR POSITION WERE NOT ELECTED POSITIONS. THE SAME APPLIES TO SATA AND HICHILEMA. SINCE RB WAS BORN IN ZIMBABWE THAT MAKES HIM A MUGABE MENTALITY, SINCE HE WAS IN UNIP THAT MAKES HIM A WHAT?

  20. #27, MMD Chief Bootlicker, RB was simply a vice who just happened to become a prezido after the demise of levy. It’s of course up to the party to decide but if some members feel it’s worth having a convetion, why not hold one? That’s what democracy is all about. Not just because the US or UK does it this or that way and you should follow suit.

  21. #27 MMD Chief Bootlicker, right on my brother. These PF sympathisers on this forum should first remove the log in their eyes before they get concerned about the speck in other people’s eyes. It’s a shame that Sata has never been elected in his party and has no intentions of doing so. Now, who is the dictator here. In fact Sata can make the worst dictator post-Amin- Bokassa Africa has ever had. As for Hichilema, the records are there by Sejani that only a Tonga should lead the Up and Down Party after Mazoka’s demise. It’s a big shame ba pact.

  22. #27 MMD Chief Bootlicker. Are you sure you are normal or is it a case of being unlearned? I am not surprised though having been taken from the village in Chipata (say that with an eastern accent-Chipartar).

The moment you embarassed yourself in public saying there was no internet banking in Zambia is when I realised the kind of person your are-umututu yet you claim to be working at the embassy in Pretoria. One wonders about the calibre of those district chairmen in Zambia who have no access to the net.

  23. This is a mess.. RB ruling is a mess. The guy was never MMD in the first place, now he wants to be more MMD than the founders.. this is so out of control. The last time people elected someone genuinely was in 1991, the rest from Mwanawasa to RB are just imposters and accidental leaders. Does this man really think he should continue ruling even after 2011? RB katushe ku farm!! The lack of real leadership in Zambia is going to be a crisis, too much politics of appeasement than more of policy. So far most of the people in MMD now are just scroungers from other parties , this should stop and its all because of poverty and getting easy money by being a member of the ruling party. Shame !!

  24. why not just campaining to drum up support for the candidate of choice instead of attacking innocent people who what to bring development to this nation.

  25. Convention or no convention it is clear who is most likely to be running for MMD. All RB is saying is “don’t eff with me fools”. So let him flex. Good to see a powerful president. He is well travelled. He is well wet (monkey p***) and he is wealthier every minute. Relax fellow Zedians. MMD and other parties will trip themselves up long before eRection day… politicians are a bunch of d**ks

  26. Manje ni masowela, Resign for what, If RB congtinues with such mentality of chasing pipo from MMD who is he going to remain with. Its too early for him to embark on such a venture coz soon he will in Solwezi for another by election and if the tone of his langauge does not change I am afraid that come 2011 he will have decampaigned MMD and himself by then. Already there is a problem in Western Province which needs his attention. The likes aof Kaingu & Lungwangwa are not grassroot politicians. They dont know what is on ground.

  27. Where is the Army please, even when they see that the Constitution is being raped open and they are very quiet.I thought they are working to protect the Zambian people?.How can a President of a country start insulting in public and giving out gifts to Chiefs and hungry people?.Is the Army there to protect the rich only, cant they see that we have a war situation with an internal enemy around?

  28. The task ahead to rid this country of undemocratic tendencies is so stupendous that it will require concerted efforts by all and sundry that aspire to see our country move forward with progressive nations in this 21st century. I look forward to seeing The Pact pull through this one.

  29. Let me ask a question has PF itself hold any convention?this people just leave us alone we also have reasons not to hold a convention just lik Ba tata Ba Sata has reasons also.

  30. Zambia is a Democratic but not a coward nation, we do not stand for an unconstitutional dictatorship. Anybody that thinks Zambians are asleep; must be out of their minds. We may seem docile but we stand for our rights. Zambia is now ablaze !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We do not stand for all this colonialism mentality………………

  31. Does The Pact MOU talk about a convention? In this case, we have one person going against the party’s constitution.

  32. Zambia is now ablaze !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We do not stand for all this colonialism mentality………………  Zambia is a Democratic but not a coward nation, we do not stand for an unconstitutional dictatorship. Anybody that thinks Zambians are asleep; must be out of their minds. We may seem docile but we stand for our rights. Zambians are now in a state of war against MMD dictators…. The Armed services shall Arise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. If you see an old man marrying a girl of a daughter’s age, just know the mane is not normal. This man is prooving his IQ levels to all Zambians. The only people who can support him are those who are gaining something from him. It ie really frustrating to have such a man as a head; le alone a predo.

  34. Banda.R is our presido for now, either u like it or not. Just yesterday u were crying about Mwanawasa’s leadership 2moro u will be crying bcoz of Sata’s leadership thereafter it will be HH’s and u will be crying then it will be my turn and oncemore u will cry. So my fellow countrymen just realise that we are still on Earth. Life on Earth is not “linear” things are n’t just perfect and they will never be. The moment things will be perfect we will be Heaven.

  35. Goodmorning
We need people who have the guts to stand up against mediocre leadership and challenge it from every angle and position. Those that are ready to stand up and get rid of this mess have my full support.

  36. #59 Mr Bean, we are not asking for heaven in Zambia, but we need democratic principles. How come other countries such as Botswana, Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa, Mozambique and many others, have been able to do that with the exception of Zim of-course. Akhulu Mphuno wants to go the Mugabe route and we need to fight that as sson as possible. We dont want another wamuyayaya, awe. Meanwhile, Mr Bean, you will never be president. Just wait for 10 more generations and by then, THE SON OF MAN will have come. Sorry man.

  37. I conquer with N0 11. There is no democracy in Zed. Guys democracy means having divergent views and the winner carries the day. Why shud we continue having imposters for leaders, lets go to the convention and have credible leaders out of a vote. the MMD constitution says we shall have a convention every 5 yrs, why should we change that at a rally, we need a convention to amend that clause. You do not expell people for airing divergent views unless we are in a one party system. Viva democracy, viva convention, viva people driven mandate, Abashi NEC, Abash shameless provincial chairmen. Its like these people are preserving their jobs, One thing they ought to remember is they can deny us the conventional ballot but they can’t suppress the spirit of democracy, it will heat them come 2011.

  38. #39 & #41, thanks for your objective points. I will just ignore those who can’t put their points across without insulting me. I wonder why people who just insult us can’t use their so called education to find proper use of adjectives and just debate the issue at hand than insult.

Anyway back to the point at hand, honestly people the MMD president is really not done at the convention. These elections really take place at the provincial branches. and all the provinces have endorsed RB so even if we held the convention we know delegates who will be selected to attend the convention will vote RB.

The other candidates should have fought their way through branches and not the media. We are just being realistic. Perharps the way we elect leaders need to change, but that is another debate

  39. Just look at South Africa, the same pipo who had hope in Jacob Zuma are now hopeless and rioting bcoz the man has not delivered his campaign promises. Why then do we place hope in mortal men?

  40. #63 Hachi. This is what happens when one man has more powers than the country put together. All those saying no to democracy are scared they will lose what they are enjoying. Boot Licker from CHIPARTAR is one of them. A villager who until he started visiting LT didn`t know there was internet banking in Zambia. So what do you expect?

  41. Can somebody tell me what is it that is preventing people like Prof Chirwa & Magande from forming a party that can take on the likes of PF UPND and MMD. The current establishment wont take Zambia anywhere. RB is unipist Sata is even more Unipist than anybody out there. We need fresh blood to change the course of our country. Zambia is a very rich country and there is enough for everyone.

  42. Boot Licker when it suits you, you are quick to refer to the US and the UK. The point you missed is people are saying they need a convetion. Why deny them their right? Just enjoy for now you heartless villager. How do you feel when you see a child die of hunger? I bet nothing. In your simple mind it`s palobe palobe.

  43. Iwe Papa J MMD was more than fresh blood in 1991. See where your relatives are now! It ain`t about fresh blood. It`s the thinking of a black man. Simples!

  44. # 27 You are wrong, The late Ted Kennedy challenged President Jimmy Carter for Democratic Party Nominee in 1980. Party members are free to challeng RB, and if he sill still be ‘popular’ at convention time, he will emmerge winner. Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party did not ask Ted Kennedy and his supporters to resign

  45. THIS GOVERNMENT IS A BUNCH OF THIEVES THAT SHUD BE OVERTHRON BY THE MILITARY AT ALL COSTS. THEY DESERVE TO BE CAPTURED AND CASTRATED BY THE MILITARY JUNTAL. THIS IS A REASON WHY WE HAVE WAR IN MANY PARTS OF AFRICA AND RENEGADE SOLDIERS WHO CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE. RUPIYA SHUD BE SHOT DOWN AND CIVIL WAR SHUD BE DECLARED. THE WESTERN PROVINCE SHUD FORCE THE GOVT TO REVIST THE BAROTSE ESTABLISHMENT AS THEY HAVE BEEN ROBBED OF THEIR REGITIMATE STATE. THE DONOR COMMUNITY SHUD CONTINUE HOLDING ON TO THE FUNDING AS THE COUNTRY DOES NOT FULFILL THE GOOD GOVERNANCE CONDITIONS. THIS WONT AFFECT THE POOR AS THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN POOR AND THEY HAVE LIVED LIKE THAT AS NORMAL LIFE. ZAMBIA IS NOW A FAILED STATE AND I AGREE WITH AKAPONDO BLOG ANALYSIS OF A FAILED STATE, THE CONDITIONS ZAMBIA HAS MET.

  46. Watch The re -incarnation of UNIP. I am surprised why he scared of a convention, I dont think he has any serious challengers

  47. Papa J @ #67. I agree with you to a certain degree. Within the MMD, there are men and women of virtue who are convinced that what is going on within their ranks is not right. Why stay?

  48. The impunity with which RB conducts himself is shocking at best, and bordering on the insane at worst. Kavindele in his interview put it very eloquently. The Zambian people voted for/formed MMD because they had had enough of One party, one leader dictatorial tendencies that UNIP practised. For Mulongoti or Shikapwasha and Mabenga to advise him that going without a convention will be acceptable to us is clearly lies. If RB had half a brain, he would know that. A lot of people feel the same way as the western province MMD, but they are afraid to speak out. Even Katele, who wants the job for himself ( another chap with delusions of grandour) is in a sticky situation. Kuya bebele . Rupiah will retire a very sad, lonley old man.

  49. #62 MM”D” BIN ADAM i like yo thinkin but what i meant was any one can be presido. It could be u as our leader but as along as we are on planet earth one day we will complain bcoz of yo leadership style. Man has a natural inclination towards complaining sometimes its genuine sometimes its not. Take a look at Mozegata i mean Moses of the Bible he was good leader receiving instructions direct from God and yet Children of Isreal cried and complained. Now doesnt this scare us, we have leaders whom we dont even know were they get instructions from to rule us.

  50. I predicted a few weeks ago that MMD was in “self destruct” mode and suggested that the opposition needn’t try too hard as the MMD lacked a winning strategy. If at the 11th hour MMD wake up to the fact that a convention will go ahead, it goes ahead and RB (predictably) loses, their winning candidate will not have had enough time to prepare for elctions against the opposition. In the MMD is a lame or sitting duck government. They urgently need to pull their fingers out if they are to survive. VJ or no VJ, kuya bebele!

  51. Martworld #71 & #73,

I have been dying to ask you this question.. Where is Ba Chewe fimo fimo?? I miss him in here .. badly… what happened??
Tell me ba ndume ba Martworld Terence…
As for your Democracy question… its slowly beeing thrown out of Zambia’s window… hahhhh hhehhhehhh!!!

  52. # 67 you are right, from time in memorial its Sata and RB, its time for change 27 years of what have you done for Zambia, if its you chi sata, you represent everything wrong in a president. mu likaunda you were there, mulichiluba you were there, muli mwanawasa you were there, kuli akaiche ka HH ekoli, bakalamba rest now Viva Youth! Viva HH! Viva pact!

  53. This arrogance is shocking. Kumulu – Lesa ……………. Pansi Nyama soya. Anyway Sata once said that conventions destry parties. mAYBE A\rUPIAH IS TAKING A LEAF FROM THE SATANIC ONE. As for the self destruct mode as said by simon # 78. I dont think so yet. Remember that PF has been growing stronger without a convention

  54. Uluse lwalile nkwale.

MMD is in intensive care, some one should rescue it from the jaws of destruction that has invaded the party. Why should people who are doing the right thing by calling for a convention resign? This is strange.

  55. #81 ‘so called’ positivist:

As much as I hate Rupiah and His monkeys, to claim that PF has been growing stronger is a far cry…… Nobody in their right minds wants PF to run things in zed. All we ask for is for MMD to hold a convention so RB is retired !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We all loved UPND when Mazoka was living. Mazoka had won elections……. As of HH, he made a huge mistake to side with sata….. People in this blog are not pissed with MMD per say, However, we are all pissed off that MMD wants the looser of a Presido (RB) to continue taking us back into Post-colonial days of a dictatorship. MMD with a convention and new preido will do just fine. On the other hand, any preido siding with Sata is as good as RB ( DEAD!!!!!). At this juncture, UPND has lost the electorate.

  56. What we need now is to retire all these recycled politicians and get a new vision for our country, be it MMD, UPND, PF etc…. We do not need these old people that are now looking as ugly as Makishi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. Chief bootlicker, word of advice for you. Stop thinking using your stomach, use your brains. That is what has killed Zambia. All those people surrounding and kneeling are thinking of what they would put in there stomach if RB was removed. But that should’nt be the case. We need to be as pbjetive and profesional as possible. Everybody in NEC and cabinet know that this country has gone back 10yrs from were LPM left us. We had made strides of development but alas. But due to thinking using the stomach they continue singing praises to someone who has done more harm to the mases. Lets objectively look at what this man has done, other than going round the world and over working George Kunda and making us loss donor confidence what have we achieved. what is the budget deficiet for this year.

  58. If you dont want to practice democracy on such a small gatherring(Convention) what about the whole country? Should we belive that the democracy you claim shall be given a chance in 2011 or will shut up everybody(People) before then so that you cant contest against frogs ant rats? What a shame.

  59. Rupiah WALIJE FUNDO.As there is no Dog in Hotdog, so there is no Democracy in Movement for Multparty Democracy. Rupiah Banda and His minions are a buch of nosense. RB should know that gone are the days when leadership meant dictatorship; but democracy means doing the will of the masses. We know that anyone can be polite to a King but it takes a wise king to be polite to followers. RB should learn that mediocre president comands, while a good president explains while a superior person demontrates, but a great leader inspires. RB is a mediocre. Those in MMD should know that if a ladder in not leaning against the right wall, every step you take on it just gets you to the wrong place faster. Its not only in MMD but injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. RB is like a difected engine.

  60. Please can somebody tell RB the meaning of the word ‘democracy’ kanshi. Of all the peolple in MMD, if katele speaks i listen becos he was voted for at the convention, for the DNS, the rest they just took over without even handover notes. Mulongoti appointed and nominated, doesn’t even know what it feels contesting an election, VJ, always picked from the doldrums. How can we continue with such people and they say they are talking on behalf of the masses, which masses, whose mandate are they riding on. They are ever trying to convince us to accept them. When a father in a home is ever reminding you that he is the father then just know that there is something wrong. You don’t need to do that all the time, people will know on their own just by the way you handle issues in the home

  61. ## 27 MMD Chief Bootlicker is right. Infact a convension that substitutes an incumbent president with another just months before a major election creates a momentous exit from government.
Bloggers are tearing the MMD but too lazy to talk about the alternative. PF? how on earth can a crumbling one man party ever make it? Meanwhile UPND tribal grouping is having a fair share of PF thugs crawling all over. A meager and final announcement of the pact presidential candidate will produce a case study of “political fall out” hitherto unseen.

  62. It’s amusing to see how much passion is triggered over internal MMD matters especially among outsiders who have absolute nothing to gain from party dynamics. May be they don’t know that it’s MMD functionaries who shake and move things inline with party strategic interest and not outsiders. Party functionaries and structures drive the collective party agenda. It’s ironic to see small parties with overwhelming challenges at hand getting over preoccupied with internal politics of a powerhouse. Fighting an incumbent power house is not task of loose nuts dependent on none material insulting politics.

  63. These titular parties have no history of intra-party democracy not mentioning the issue of convention, yet they are the loudest gongs rumbling in vanity over MMD internal matters. On defeat they will singing their usual rigging orchestra. Isn’t it ironic? There is PF rolling in its 9th year since its inception but still an individualized club of a 4 time failure now preparing for his fifth crush. Anyone who pushes for internal democracy is lynched and fired. PF has today expelled 23 pro-democracy MPs reducing itself into a titular 19 member kaponya party. It does not even qualify for the official opposition party status in the house if strict constitutionality is observed

  64. The MMD has merely allowed a democratic open and sustainable internal debate for members to debate available options. No decision has been made evident by very progressive functional and structural realignments in action. The party secretariat under the Secretary General does the co-ordination of party program from selection of delegates to daily operations. Certainly its not tabloids or blog threads that shape destiny. Political parties are like any other social club where membership is by choice. Where one believes he has some core values which are not accommodated under prevalent situations and times or feels the individual has no heart for the consensus of collective decisions, a progressive way forward is to throw in the towel and test the waters by starting own party to prove the…

  65. Where one believes he has some core values which are not accommodated under prevalent situations and times or feels the individual has no heart for the consensus of collective decisions, a progressive way forward is to throw in the towel and test the waters by starting own party to prove the incumbent wrong. The other option is pairing up with those you believe you share values. There is no bondage in Democratic Party politics.

  66. Can someone who is morally upright marry someone with 50 years difference with His.
RB can do anything that pleases him. RB´s ego contrals his presidence insteady on the oposite. We have learnt it that RB is really like the foolish King who walked naked because he is not allowing people do advise him. He did it first with Dora issue ZAMTEL and RP capital saga. Next he came again with Chiluba issue. Nothing can stop RB´s ego apart from God. RB can even sale his wife no one can stop him as long he wishes. RB has brought back UNIP dectatorship. MMD is no longer there but replaced with UNIP idiologies. Shame on supporters of RB.

  67. #93 to #97 is the same dull chap called Senior (aka nshinya) S h i t zen, Patriot, Capitalist, Boot Licker. Chi colour aba ama tall lay ubunono. Tafyala ma tall lay yakwe that`s why he is not bothered about the young generation. Mar pull lee yakwe. Senior wa tall mber car no call!

  69. #95 Senior citizen

Your username suits you thus far… You fall under the recycled people we referring to.

  70. If a president of a country is able to stand up and say such words then you know that we are in really problems. There is no substance in the leaders we have today.

  71. `Vioneni Vimasilu onani onani’ `ubufi bwakunya’ `Ni Chisilu nga eve’ and many other degradatory statements have come from the mouth of Bwezani chalo kumbuyo Banda. Couple this with the fact that HERB has a big nose the size of apple and you see why calling him a clown is apt. It adds meanin to sentiments that there is a circus in ZED.

  72. Why is LT only about MMD now? I am beggining to believe this is a government mouth piece. As if Daily Mail and Times of poor Zambia are not enough!

  73. 95-98 SENIOR CITIZEN your arguement is severely flawed and lacks intellectual rigour. Understand its nothing personal but your process of deduction is not logical at all. Are suggesting that if PF has not had a convention in the past 9 years then it makes it acceptable to MMD supporters, or Zambians at large with a stake in the outcome (the assumption being that MMD is more likely to win National presidency)? Does it suddenly become justifiable? Your FIRST wrong assumption is that 2 wrongs make a right. SECOND wrong assumption is that PF is the yardstick for Intra party Democracy, and therefore if PF do it, then why not? THIRD wrong assupmtion is that people on this forum complaining are PF. Our agenda is democracy, intra or inter party. What is yours?

  74. 81.. Thenji Stevens (Mrs).

Iam very sorry for taking long to respond.Chewe aliluba pa cani.I have been writing him ama mails but he does not respond.Otherwise mulishani mwenkashi?

  75. most Bloggers ni masilu…….throw away your stupid hatred, grow up and go register as voters, then RB may take your rubbish seriously as you will be a potential 1 vote. whenever Rb, Mulongoti, vj, DPP, shikapwa fimo fimo state facts, the poor bloggers are up in arms. When Sata opens his dagga stained ****ing mouth, the poor bloggers shout Amen!! what a ****ing stupid country. Full of stupid saddists with no hope and only hope in a misfit bastard like Sata. .

  76. Things are slowly becoming fuzzy in this country and i believe its just the hand of GOD that will spare us the agony that is yet to engulf our beloved nation. For a long time MMD members have been condemning Sata that he is a dictator who has failed to call for a convention. As if thats not enough, there are some individuals who have even resigned from the PF citing lack of democracy in the party as some of the reasons for their decisions e.g Chimumbwa, Mumbi, Doctor Xavier Chishimba (Self made doctor) etc. Worse off even Hikainde Hichilema who is now the Sata’s bed fellow used to sing the same song prior to his becoming King cobra’s mate. Why has things now changed in the MMD this time? What wrong has the people calling for a convention done? Where is the democratic party we knew now?

  77. Why do they refer to opposition as enemies? What sort of African politics are these? Embrace divegencie views fontins

  78. Form your own trolling parties or join blog parties like Henry Kyambalesa’s Agenda for Change party and Chola Mukanga’s internet based Zambia Democratic party shy to hit the road since 2006.I have details where you can physically visit and confer for trolls politics with the two cadres.

  79. Late Levy Mwanawasa was prophetic when he cursed the Zambian opposition that they are buttocks which will never ever find their way in front position. Here we are ngwangwazis ukuichusha nemitima for nothing and i mean nothing with zero prospects.

  80. MMD likes to go to a convention after five years to elect new leaders and the president of the party.
Now this talk about not holding the convention, what does it mean?
Is the MMD not floating a candidate in 2011?
The MMD was given support in 2006 because of their policies.
Why not participate in the 2011 polls? Am sure they may get a fresh mandate in 2011 going by the economic stride they have made.

  81. Iwe No 118. are u sata’s other son! without a dadi …you a a real funking bastard. You sound like u have big balls maybe threeeee

  82. we have not refused to hold the convention. We were testing the waters. Even LPM was just acting president and NEC can float an acting guy to contest without any problem.. We shall hold the convention and all delegates will be CAREFULLY selected from wards, districts, provincial and national committees. nothing to fear and RB, Mulongoti, VJ, and like minded can NEVER loooose. No room for Magande, Mpombo, Shakafuswa….they may not even be allowed near the convention venue….ask kavindele he knows about the power of the cadres. He wanted to challenge kk and got what he asked for…. If you want it you will get it.

  83. RB is afraid of being challenged at the convention. “Ameno mafupa”, all those people that are encouraging RB and his stupidity will turn their backs on him. I wonder who is afraid of, I just pra y they have that convention then world will see what a dander head RB is. Vasco Da Gama, vina bwela mochedwa. RB is so excited like a kid in a candy store.

  84. Banda grew up under Welensky’s dictatorship, then Kaunda’s dictatorship so he knows nothing about democracy!

  85. Commerce minister Felix Mutati and his colleague Kapembwa Simbao were last night allegedly found trying to distribute blankets to would be voters in the Kasama bye-election.

According to Radio Phoenix, the two ministers were chased by marketeers at New Town market.

Radio Phoenix was quoting Anti Voter Aparthy president Bonnie Tembo who said that the ministers wanted to distribute Mellie meal , blankets and money.

Kasama central residents will go to vote tomorrow morning.

  86. I dont see anything wrong in what RB has said infact he has not stated whether they will or willnot hold the convetion, he just says for those in a hurry for it join another party that will have one quicker than we will, Am not MMD by the way i dont belong to any party, but i think that RB gets a lot of stick even when its not called for just like Brown. Why cant all this civil society groups push for the parties to hold a convetion??? Or just let it be its a party matter and could be a party strategy others use it to put a message across to the voting public, It should be up to individual parties to decide if they dont wanna hold one whats the big deal democracy doesnt mean we decide for everyone, besides whoever said a convetion shows your party is democratic???

  87. #62 and #74 no war please. Zambians just need to demand what is theirs peacefully. Zambia is under the blood of Jesus.

  88. #27 MMD chief bootlicker, thank you very much for educating us about what goes on in the US and UK with incumbency. BUT LET ME REMIND YOU, THIS IS ZAMBIA, AND WE DO OUR THINGS DIFFERENT. its people like you who bring us backwards, are you saying that if the US used to challenge the incumbent president then Zambia should also follow. We are an independent country so we do our things independently whether its similar to other countries or not.
The MMD party is not (and i emphasize NOT) the same party as the Republican party or the Democrats in the US. The MMD has its on constitution which is not a duplicate of any US political party. That constitution is on that the MMD should follow.

  89. the mmd constitution allows for the NEC to elect a President. MMD is an independent club that sets its own rules. Outsiders cannot determine what goes ont there. If NEC decides not to hold convention so be it. Thats why RB is saying if you are in a hurry go to another political party and lets see if you will be allowed to stand. You myopic people here are saying its okay for SATANA to continue as PF president without ever being elected at all but for Rb he must be subjected to a vote? What principle are you advocating here? Even convention is held RB will win by virtue of state power and the fact that no one will dare go against an incumbent.

  90. What a president, must be one of the worst in the world. Don’t call them enemies, bettr call them opposition. Even simple english is an issue!!??? SHAME.

  91. R.B i m failing to understand u. The proponents of no convention are saying there is no money hence no convention for the mmd but just the other day i read that you were laughing at mr sata that he has decided to field GBm in kasama by election because their party is broke and Gbm can sponsor himself because he has money. Now if this statement came from your rotten mouth then u not thinking well coz if you can laugh at sata because he is broke then you have the moneyfor the convention. Mwebalupiya then hold the convention. There is osmething seriously wrong in the mmd. What is it that you are hiding rb.

  92. Ba Kanitundila, surely you can see and hear the peoples’ displeasure. The people have spoken in many ways than you could’ve ever imagined. At the rate you’re moving sir, you’re most likely the worst PRESIDENT next to ka chi-qala-ka FTJ Zambia has ever had. With all due respect sir, just step down and save yourself the embarassing loss you are going to suffer come 2011. We have heard, seen and quite frankly looked at you ENOUGH already. RESIGN and set the pace for the rest of your dispeakable cabinet.

I will surely drink 16 crates the day you leave state house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  93. In my humble opinion I think RBee has made a wrong political move on the convention thing. 1) RBee has let Kafupi control his legacy , he praises Chiluba’s past corrupt govt too much. It is a bitter pill to swallow for most law abiding citizens who are honest and hardworking 2) A convention would have been a great opportunity to embrace his party members green , red , irritating, kind, lazy, hardworking, tall , short ….make amends. If he had unifed his party it shows a side of him being able to unify Zambia to economically progress. Leadership and character are tested. It would have been hardwork but worth it. 3) As PR agents Shikapwasha , Mulongoti, Mangani and Chiluba talk too much. Overshadows any serious speeches.

  94. #142 RBee also needs a new speechwriter asap. The speech I think meant to exert authority, however, unwisely displays arrogance. This is a repellant to potential supporters. Humbleness in a speech, apology when needed…. attracts listeners. It is important to make all people feel important . RB the president and needs to show his ears are open to all types of people. The best speeches have a humble touch to them. Instead of I they say WE. Always I am listening and there for you…. Well, my fellow Zambians another day dawns tomorrow we all hope for a better future for the beautiful land God has given us Zambia. Undeniably a beautiful country in Africa with peace loving people. We should all pray for wisdom in Zambia. God Bless Zambia

  95. That’s, Kanitundila has committed a political suicide, not even the lord Christ can save this F O O L I S H I D I O T.

  96. For someone with his level of education and international exposure, one would have thought that along the way, Bwezani Banda would have come across the immortal quotation from Lord Acton, in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton, 1887: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” We all know that Kanitundila was never a great man anyway, he was literally salvaged by Levy from the political dustbin back into the limelight and he became the accidental president upon Levy’s demise. To therefore tempt fate like this is most unbecoming of this goofy goon. Only time will tale, Banda’s end is not bound to be a pleasant one.

  97. Now, Lord Acton’s one above was preceded by William Pitt the Elder’s one thus: “Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it; and this I know, my lords, that where laws end, tyranny begins.” This is the stage Banda has reached. Nothing can be done to save him, he is doomed and far beyond salvation.

  98. #51 and 62. I think you have a big problem you do not seem to know anything. A Party Constitution is not a Republican Constitution. The Republican Constitution does not say that Political Parties must hold Conventions before an election – that is why your Sata and HH have been standing. If any of these guys had announced first that they were not going to hold Conventions because of money issues, you were going to agree with them – because you are bent on removing MMD from power. The problem we have right now is that it is not illegal not to hold a Convention. However, the Republican Presidency is not a Party issue – it is a National issue. Remember, at the Convention RB will not lose, it is the others – so Mpombo and Magande are just noise makers. If RB is so unpopular, kick him out 2011.

  99. No. 148: I think your perception of the current Zambian political situation is dangerously myopic and for an African, it says a lot about why the syndrome of Somalianization is spreading in Africa. Charity like they say begins at home, if Kanitundila cannot respect his own party the MMD’s constitution, just how would you expect the same character to respect the republican one? Let not your support for Kanitundila fueled by tribal bigotry cloud your thinking, he has on the convention score departed from democratic norms and that’s where the rule of law ends, and tyranny begins. He needs to be destroyed before he destroys Zambia.

  100. Zambian Head of state and ruling party candidate advises opponents to resign

Zambian President Rupiah Banda asserted his authority in the ruling party Wednesday telling opponents who want challenge his nomination as the presidential candidate ahead of the 2011 polls to resign.

The ruling party Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), National Executive Committee in June endorsed Banda as its candidate in 2011 elections but the move has created divisions as some members felt that a convention should be held to elect the candidate.

  101. “Those who want the convention and are pressing that it should be held at all cost are free to resign and join political parties that will hold a convention soon, if any. After all we are two years away from the 2011 elections and the NEC has not yet met to discuss the matter,” the state-run Times of Zambia quoted Banda as saying.Recently MMD has bought 200 Pick up automobiles and over 500 bicycles for its grassroots party structures in preparation for 2011.This consignment undeclared could have gobbled the ruling party millions of US dollars.

  102. In his first remark Banda was addressing supporters of the ruling party in Kasama, 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of the capital Lusaka.

However self appointed spokesman for the few members calling for the convention, George Mpombo who has no leverage on the party delegates chosen by the party secretariat headed by a pro Banda ally Dr.Katele Kalumba served as defence minister in Bandas administration and resigned in July after disappointment of not landing the VP position, said Banda was a new in the party and should not dictate how the MMD is to be run.Of interest is that Mpombo who was UNIP then UPND just moved to MMD in 2002 where he found Katele, Mwaanga and many founder members all pro Banda architects with full control of the party structures.experts say Mpombo’s battle in the…

  103. Experts say Mpombo’s battle in the media while distant from the party structures is nothing academic face saving posture in futility. Many believe MMD will go to the convention once the pro Banda party alignment is fully gripped.

Knowing all this, Mpombo has kept the rhetoric that “What President Banda is saying is totally unacceptable, the MMD is founded on democratic principles and there is no need for Banda to bring new ideas to the party.

  104. Literally on all scores, chips are down. To claim that such a presidency should be allowed to play out till 2011 is politics of apocalypse and as we have seen in Zimbabwe and may other countries in Africa, it only saves to destroy the nation. Kanitundila is undressing this country right before our eyes and like that great son of Africa Julius Kambarage Nyerere one said and quote: “Small nations are like indecently dressed women. They tempt the evil-minded.” The more and longer undressed Kanitundila gets us to, the more dangerous and difficult it will be to fix this nation. I just hope silly monkeys like 148 realise this pattern of things.

  105. He is the one who should resign because he just joined us and since the formation of the party we have been holding conventions. To this Mpombo who grooved Mwanawasa has forgotten that its the same founder members and MMD machinery with Banda that irregularly coronized Mwanawasa the man he lived grooving for.Mpombo asks “What is wrong with the old man,” .

He said that Banda was becoming selfish by wanting the party to anoint him as the sole candidate.

  106. Banda had been viewed with suspicion by some new MMD members like Mpombo and Magande who themselves just crossed to MMD recently from UNIP and UPND.Like them Banda was a member of the former ruling United National Independence Party.their criticism of his UNIP ties does not seem to alter founder members of MMD now re-converging behind Banda.

But recently some of his critics have rallied around him, arguing that it is easier to sell an incumbent to the electorate.

  107. Katele rallying behind Kanitundila, my foor! The last thing I want is a notorious sangoma like him rallying his powers behind me, what if he disappears and abrah cadabrah he is in Plot 1 himself? When he vacates the MMD secretary general chair that is at the moment smelling of repugnant sulphur, we need to sprinkle it with holy water to exorcise that party of his notorious Katangese tubulu ghosts.

  108. Why rushing for convention this time. Let RB complete his term. After all he is doing a good job. Why can’t we give him another chance?

  109. LEADERS IN THIS COUNTY HAVE DEFINITELY LOST THE PLOT SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY.IF A PRESIDENT OF A NATION CAN SPEAK SO CARELESSLY AND IRRELEVANTLY JUST FOR THE SAKE OF POLITICKING,IF OUR LEADER IS OF THAT CALIBRE THEN OF WHAT CALIBRE ARE WE THE COMMON CITIZENS PERCEIVED TO BE BY THOSE OUTSIDE?

  110. Mr RB, I am very flabagusted buy your remarks… How can the whole president refers other political parties as ” Enemies ” ! ! ! Is that how things are going on over there ? How can you unite people in that way ? because, those that you are calling Enemeis are Zambians just like any others of your finish party. I plead you to withdraw that statement Mr RB …

  111. It really saddens me to see that after 45 years of independence we have nothing to show for it. I would like to congratulate all our leaders, past and present for taking our beautiful country backwards!! You are all a disgrace and a failure to the Zambian people. All the Zambian babies and people who die unecessarily from starvation and from the lack of proper medical facilities, will be on your heads. You will have a lot to answer for when you meet your maker.

  112. #149, 154 Sebuloni Kamutanda. I am not a fan of RB but unlike you I look at issues impartially. Just guide me on one issue: Does the MMD Constitution say that before a General Election the Party MUST hold a Convention? You know, the problem I have is the MMD trying to de-link the Republican Presidency from the Party Presidency. I don’t think there are safeguards against this but common sense should dictate that you come from democratic practices and beliefs for you to lead democratically. Unlike your current reasoning, there is nothing you can do before 2011.

  113. The MMD constitution clearly stipulates that there shall be a convention every five years to elect new party office bearers. Its usually timed one year before the general elections and one is due next year. Should Banda try to skip this, any member can drag him to court and I cannot see how he will win without breaking both the party and judiciary asunder. It’s beyond any sane mind to imagine how the MMD can will the 2011 polls without the convention and Banda as the candidate. Do not be suprised to see an exodus that will wipe out his majority in parliament forcing a snap general election that he will lose hands down. This is what happened to Chiluba with his 3rd term masalamusi.

  114. Rupiah Banda is a mafikizolo in the MMD. Where does he get the nerve to tell the people he found in the MMD to leave if they are not happy? It is a pity that the MMD has been hijacked by chancers with UNIP mentality.
