SESTUZ cry foul over delayed December 2009 salaries

Share

The Secondary School Teachers’ Union of Zambia (SESTUZ) has expressed concern and disappointment over the delay in the payment of December 2009 salaries and other related allowances to its members.

SESTUZ Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Zulu says his members have gone through hard times during the festive period because they had no money.

Mr. Zulu said in a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday that it was discouraging to wish teachers a happy festive season when they did not have money.[quote]

“Teachers have passed through the festive period of Christmas and New Year on very empty stomachs considering that their meager pay ran out many weeks ago and wishing them a merry a Christmas and a happy New Year has being a mockery”, he said.

He said teachers, who stay in rented houses, are already being harassed by their landlords because they have not yet paid their rentals.

Mr. Zulu said the absence of any timely explanation for the delay by government makes teachers feel extremely neglected.

He urged government to expedite the payment of salaries and related allowances to all teachers in order to avoid poor preparations for the first term of the 2010 school calendar.

  2. # 1, hope you meant peanuts. I sincerely symphathize with the teachers. I had been through all that and it was really stressful each month.

  3. one day God will set teachers free but you wonder when if the fellow teacher kaunda, trade unionist chiluba and now fellow teacher, minister of education had let them down. this is really sad. all the best teachers just register to vote next year and for sata and hichilema make use of these opportunities please. come on and comment. organise teachers for meetings and demonstration. thats how you win votes.

  4. meant sympathize at #2. Guess I should have removed the speck from my eye before asking # 1 to remove his. Good lesson.

  5. It was stupid by government under chiluba’s admin to sale government house’s without thinking about plan B of building up new government house’s, now this stangering civil servants are going through the effect of staying in rental house’s at an expense of government neglect and failure to pay its workers on time what is due to them.

  6. Ba LT your site has been too slow for the past few day’s. Can you please do something to make it fast?

  7. Something should be done as soon as possible. We cannot allow our teachers suffer like this. Education is the key to national development and if teachers are frustrated the all process will be slowed down.

  8. It is cruel not to pay hard working and long-suffering teachers yet there is money to fly three aircraft to Mongu for the president’s joy ride. Money is also easily available to pay a ghost teacher and to transport a pregnant cow to Tanzania. Stop wasting any more time and pay the teachers their dues, they are human beings with families to look after.

  9. What has RB been up to. Playing hind annd seek in Mfuwe, trying to secure his position in 2011 by commssioning the Chipata-Mfuwe Road. Oh! May be the teachers salaries were used to pay the contractor as down payment. Its really bad for the teachers after struggling with marking exams now no salary. That is the reason why leakages of exams will not stop. Vote wisely teachers in 2011. It will be BOSI (Banda Out Sata In)

  10. What is wrong with our system for paying salaries for government employees in zambia.Last time it was the police, and our friend Mangani as usual tried to explain, now its the teachers, can we have an explanation from yours truly Dora ,what the reason for this delay is.My guess and iam sure yours too is the ministry of finance has released the money, and it has been placed in some account somewhere gaining interest for the likes of Kapoko still remaining in the system. The chaps already have their december salaries and can afford a vacation, while their friends have not been paid their pocket change called salaries.Zambians lets have a heart for each other ,too much selfishness and greedy its sickening to say the least. We need an attitude change not just govt change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Sorry teachers for those even renting houses very sorry Landlords really don’t understand. Please register as voters now. We need to move out MMD and make changes please. Its like MMD is tired and can not function properly.Lets make the change work in 2011

  12. let MMD GO please they have became too fat and wealthy to think properly or either too ill/sick to work and meet pipo’s aspiration, how do u explain this poverty in the mindest of a very resources unbandant Nation-20yrs in power, most of these MMD founders are quite and fat/weathy in Diplomatic apportments around the world ,do they even care if you have eaten nshima

  13. I take it that all cabinet ministers including the ministers of finance and education never have their salaries delayed and it is therefore morally wrong for them to treat civil servants so inhumanly. These ministers should be decent enough and show that they care by not receiving their huge salaries and allowances until all public workers are paid.
