ZAMBIA has recorded another bumper harvest of 224,897 Metric Tonnes (MT) of maize in the 2010 – 2011 agricultural season.
This represents eight percent rise above the last 2009 – 2010 agricultural season.

The  country in the 2010-2011has produced 3,020,380 MT exceeding 2,795,483 MT recorded last agriculture season.

Agriculture and Co-operatives Minister Eustackio Kazonga announced this in Lusaka yesterday during the crop forecasting survey for 2010 – 2011 agricultural seasons.

He also revealed the 2011 – 2012 marketing season national food balance sheet.

The Minister said this season’s bumper harvest is the highest in the history of the country. He also revealed the 2011 – 2012 marketing season national food balance sheet.

Dr. Kazonga further announced that the country has 848,606 MT carry-over stock from the last to the current crop marketing season.

“This is another unprecedented bumper harvest and l wish to sincerely thank our farmers for this tremendous achievement.

“ This year’s record provides the country with a good opportunity to adequately feed the nation and the potential to export the surplus crop,” Dr. Kazonga said.

The current crop marketing season commenced on 1st May, 2011 when FRA officially started the maize purchase business in the country.

He said the total supply of the grain available for 2011 – 2012 marketing season is 3,868,986 MT

Government has in the meantime engaged the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to construct 30 new storage facilities and silos across the country to realize additional 102,000 MT capacity to ensure food security in the nation.

In addition , government has sufficiently funded the FRA so the Agency, can effectively lead in the crop marketing business and that maize purchases commences at the right time to avoid the grain going to waste.

He further said Government has put in place mechanisms and incentives that will result in effective value addition to the grain alongside with boosting other potential sectors of poultry, livestock which have demand for the COMESA and SADC regions as well as export beef to Europe.

Dr Kazonga said that government is working out measures to wean out farmers so that they graduate from small to commercial farmers, improve Farmer Input Support Programme package as well as increase the number of beneficiaries from 500,000 to 890,000 farmers in the 2010-2011 farming season.

[pullquote]“We have done tenders to liquidate the loan at Finance Bank by May 31st 2011 while at Standard Chartered we shall pay it by June month-end,” Mr. Malambo said.[/pullquote]

And the FRA says it will settle all its existing loans obtained from local commercial banks during the last maize marketing seasons.

FRA Executive Director Lovejoy Malambo said the Agency is going to settle the loans it acquired from Finance Bank and Standard Chartered Bank before July, this year.

“We have done tenders to liquidate the loan at Finance Bank by May 31st 2011 while at Standard Chartered we shall pay it by June month-end,” Mr. Malambo said.

Meanwhile , Zambia has recorded a maize surplus of 1,661,626 MT with strategic reserve stock of 240,000 MT.

Speaking on the national food balance sheet for 2011 – 2012 during the same occassion, Dr Kazonga said revealed that government will for this reason continue to subsidies the mealie-meal so that it becomes more affordable.

“Government will continue to support and increase value addition to cash crops such as rice, cotton, tobacco, Irish and sweet potatoes, wheat, cassava, millet, groundnuts, sorghum, soya beans with the aimed of promoting the crop diversification policy under his ministry, “ He said.

Dr Kazonga urged the private sector to be pro-active in the marketing of the crops locally and internationally. He decreed that his ministry will issue export permits to various companies.

“Government is keen to see more private sector participate in the purchase of maize from our hard working farmers.

“ And my ministry will continue to issue export permits to companies who deal in crop marketing by exporting our surplus grain to regional markets but this will be done without compromising national food security,” the minister said.

  1. What bumper harvest when you fail to buy the maize from poor farmers. For the little maize that you buy you even fail to pay for it on time and thus keeping the poor farmers desperately waiting for their money and sometimes spending nights at FRA depots. As if that is not enough you fail to store the maize properly and a lot of it go to waste. Last year in Milanzi by-elections bwezani promised that the maize marketing season would open on May 1. The man did not consult anybody and he did not know anything about moisture content. So, what bumper harvest when many Zambians are still starving? You are pathetic!

  2. Every year you urge farmers not to sale their maize to brief-case dealers but you always fail to move-in on time to buy the maize. The farmers end up selling their maize for a song out of desperation and the fact that brief-case dealers pay cash! Why can’t government with so much money they spend on mobile hospitals, NAPSA, foreign trips etc fail to the poor farmers cash and improve their life style. One way to fight poverty is to buy from a poor man, noti ku mugong’a!

  3. Rubbish, excited with the bumper so that Bwezani can have enough to corrupt those hungry villagers during elections’ campaigns, and to donate to his birthplace, Zimbabwe where he wants to seek asylum when he loses this year’s elections.

It’s nonsensical to even show us how you enjoy drinking wine when us the citizens cannot even afford to buy a back of mealie meal whose price is sky-rocketing, and yet you claim we have a bumper harvest.

Make sense out of it, and let every Zambian regardless of their socio-economical status be able to buy our staple food.

  4. This is great news and need to be celebrated by all people that have Zambia at heart. I call upon every citizen who is proud to wear a Zambian flag to join me in prayer of thanks giving to  our mighty and great God for showing and showering favour on our nation by blessing it with abundant rains that have enabled our faithful and great  people to raise to the challenge and make use of this great blessing of abundant rain and land to rake in another record bumper harvest.

We also forgive all those who will receive this great blessing as bad news because their of twisted thoughts that they can only win political power if the nation is in suffering. God bless them.

While respecting all other faiths and  other religious dogmas, I submit this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ.

    Amen

    • Chief Boot(y)Licker… While we thank God for the blessings that he gives us, we bemoan the corrupt mismanagement of God’s blessings, ranging from Mineral resources, Wood, Domestic foodstuffs, even our Brains.

Many Zambians would appreciate this bumper if everyone in Chibolya, Misisi, George, Kalingalinga, Ng’ombe, Kamanaga, Kanyama, Chawama, Mtendere, Bauleni, K/SQ 1, Matero, Linda Compounds will be able to put food on their tables, and not only people like you, products of greed and corruption who lead a high life and those in Kabulonga, Ibex Hill, etc.

You’ll be blessed if you do what the Lord says. 2 Chronicles 7:14

  5. Start buying the crops so that farmers can send their children to schools since MMD has made education very expensive. The minister is just partying when farmers especially the peasants badly neeed money for essential goods. Every year MMD subjects farmers to unscrupulous brief case buyers who exploit them. Announce the flow price for maize and other crops and start buying instead of wasting time.

  6. Well done LT … For only posting all my fake positive comments on MMD yet when I comment objectively you never post … GOOD JOB GOOD JOB is what to hear .. So be it . So any thing MMD DOES will be GOOD JOB GOOD JOB even if it’s very bad it will be GOOD JOB GOOD JOB MMD .. I too am going to be an MMD YES MAN. GOOD JOB MMD GOOD JOB

  7. This is nonsense. Every year you boast of bumper harvest and yet the price of mealie meal is still high and unaffordable by many zambians. The same maize is not purchased from poor farmers while the little that is purchased it takes months (if not years) to be paid for. So whats there to celebrate about bumper harvest. Bumper harvest is only for RB and his thieves not for ordinary poor Zambian who has to toil everyday to find food.

  8. Dr Kazonga should have drunk that red wine after the price of mealie meal had been slashed to K25,000 not when there is no change at all.

  9. @1,2 and 3. Forgive me, but I do not see why this good news is political. This is you and I performing unless, ofcourse, you are an absolute townie. Let us be objective.

  10. And with this news, MMD can lock in that landslide victory. I have been telling PF bloggers that this year MMD is winning with a landslide victory. Now rural farmers are going to cash in on their hard work with this magnificent bumper harvest that will ensure food security and is an added boost to the agriculture sector of the economy.

Zambia is on its way to becoming the bread basket of Africa with this excellent news. President Rupiah Banda has shown seriousness in the agriculture sector and there results are there for everyone to see.

This is excellent and unprecedented and I advise PF bloggers to accept how magnificent this news is seeing that they’ll also benefit from this bumper harvest. They should give credit where it is due. Good job Govt.

  11. Good news Zambia.. even the GODS are blessing us. Well done GRZ.  No 1, 2 , 3 and 9 if you have nothing good to talk about Zambia go waste your time with your childish politics elsewhere…
You may like it or not GRZ is doing a great JOB for the people of Zambia

” A man’s wealth is measured by how much food he can put on the table”

  13. #14. I wonder if you are an engineer in Australia because they don’t allow such nonsense here. You even know that things are on a stand still in zambia and yet you start arguing.

  14. I would also like to thank God Almighty for blessing the nation with natural resources, good rains and hard working people. I would like to thank God for blessing our nation. We must remain humble and pray even in good times and not just bad times.

We thank you Lord for this news.

  15. Useless, mealie meal prices are still high yet you sip a glass of wine and say bumper harvest. We now need Sata to turn that bumper harvest into a more practical way by putting food on people’s tables. Every year tonnes and tonnes of maize go to waste and hundreds of farmers donot get their money on time. Its time for change of govt so that people can benefit from the so called bumper harvest. VOTE FOR SATA.

  16. Good Job MMD and His Excellency RB. You are a great team. Viva MMD! Pa Nkoloko chabe

  17. GRZ has done its job in creating a sound base of the Zambian agriculture sector. Its now upto the private sector to play its part by investing a proper agriculture marketing industry. By that i mean developing a sound market for the buying and selling of Zambia’s agriculture commodities in the Southern African region.

No 1, 2, 3 and 9 for your information that is no GRZ duty….  GRZ has played its part. You need to move your mind from the Kaunda era of GRZ doing everything.
By the way i maybe in Australia… my farm in Ndola rural produced 370  bags of maize. I have also played my part

  18. FOOD SECURITY, FOOD SECURITY, FOOD SECURITY FIRST

To the the all Mighty God who has blessed Zambia with good rains, a visionary leadership, hardworking people and best pro Growth policy, thank you! Zambians will not live on homosexuality, insults, hatred, envy and tribalism but this measure of development with food security. Proud to be a Zambian. The enemies of Zambia in allience with Lucifer himself are falling in thousands with anger and disappointment as God meets Zambia at the point of her needs immeasurably.

  19. No 16 you can doubt if am in Australia or an engineer… that does not change your shallow political thinking….

    Well done GRZ

  20. M..M…D…….Nafuti Nafuti

    Pankoloko……Bika bika bika bi…..ka!

    Homesexuals…..Kanakanakana.

  21. “Malawian president says Homosexuals are worse than dogs”

Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika has delivered a blistering attack on homosexuals which in Zambia Sata is soliciting for against national development describing them as “worse than dogs” and the act abhorrent.

  22. #22. I am not doubting the fact is that you are not there. They don’t allow people of your calibre in Australia who just support blindly even where things are clear.

  23. People do not live on announcements of bumper harvest. They need to see the food on the table. I fail to understand how this so called bumper harvest cant bring MM prices down. Only if it is just an electioneering gimick. There is no pumper hervest it is all fake. VOTE PF…

  24. come off it, it’s just usual campaingn propaganda by government to forcify the current harvest, with the desire to claim that your agricultural policies are working. don’t even cheat we all move around and we know that this is not true. Shame on you, cause u will be in the opposition if u don’t defect to the PF. Our minds are oready made up and whatever, sort of cheap campaign will not work until u should be in opposition this year.

  25. This Doctor has been hard-working throughout his life. I remember when he was at Teveta. He has been like that, output oriented and full of action. Viva RB Viva Doc

  26. You guys working in Embassies are a disgrace. You jump like kids when you see such any article. As # 26 put it, are you guys really been school? Engineers????? Thats why we have poor planning and ugly structures in Zambia because of people like “The Engineer (Australia)”. How can we celebrate bumper harvest if your MMD can not even collect the same maize from the farmers. It is going to waste and the price of the end product is never adjusted.

  27. More roads being built, more food now and your money at Work. RB is so great. I tell you!

  28. No 31 Am an engineer in Australia designing structures which are being accepted in a first world country (Australia)
I left Zambia because of DULL people like you…. you need to learn to give credit were its due. you may end up even denying yourself

Again well done GRZ you agriculture policy is indeed working…

  29. Dr. Kazungu is just politiking what bumper harvest is he talking about when last year FRA failed to buy all the mize countrywide. MMD games of deceiving pipo will not work. We have had alot of lies from the MMD leadership and come rain come sunshine CHANGE IS COMING. We sre being told by Mutati and Situmbeko that Zambia’s economy has recorded growth which we dont see. Pipo are not going to eat statistics (figures) we need to see our health, education, roads etc functioning. All we hear are mobile hospitals. Building roads can unhealthy pipo benefit from that. There are alot things which need to be done for Zambia to qualify as Middle Income Country.Other we may qualify but more 75% of population will still be living on US$1.00 per day.

  30. 31.
NAME ONE PROJECT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED.

RUPIAH WILL JUST GIVE IT AWAY LIKE LAST TIME TO HIS HOME COUNTRY AND UNCLE BOB.
20% OF THE CROP WILL ROT IN DEPOTS LIKE LAST YEAR.
FARMERS WILL STILL BE WAITING FOR PAYMENTS LIKE LAST YEAR.

HOW MANY CHINESE ARE PIG FARMING ON GOVERNMENT PROPERTY?  see IMAGES FROM LUSAKA TIMES 2 MONTHS AGO.

  31. # 22, You cant be an Engineerfor sure!! Engineers dont think like the way you’re thinking. You are too shallow minded. Why have you run away from your country? If Zambia was like Australia, you woudnt have even thot of going that side. Now that we are here fighting for Zambia to be a better place to stay in,you are there talking NONSES!!! Just keep your mouth shut!! You dont know wat is on the ground here.

  32. Chief Boot(y)******… While we thank God for the blessings that he gives us, we bemoan the corrupt mismanagement of God’s blessings, ranging from Mineral resources, Wood, Domestic foodstuffs, even our Brains.

2 Chronicles 7:14.

LT, why have you blacked out the word “Licker” from boot(y)licker?

  33. # 33. Do you think Enginners think like the way you think?Which University did you go to first of all?Am still doubting you because ULICIKOPO SANA!! Wat are u doing in Australia?Come and do wat you are doing in Australia to zambia you dull chap!!

  34. No 36  Good luck with your fight….
RB or SATA being president does not change an inch of my life. Am having a great life here with no intention of returning after 20 years.

    Again GRZ well done…..

  35. I think Zambians just like talkin and politikin blindly, God blesses us with a bumper harverst and its a problem to some people. Do we have to politik about everything? this is good and we thanks God. whether you r PF or MMD, the bumper harvest is for the whole nation and we should therefore rejoice. lets learn to do politiks when it matters not when it concerns people’s food and livelihood!

  36. This is great news for the country. If I am not mistaken, wasn’t the price of ufa slashed last year? I guess it will fall again as inflation goes down again. In many other African countries such as Uganda and Tanzania the price of food is rising, whereas Zambians are already seeing more money in their pickets! I am always surprised by those who call themselves ‘patriotic’ but will only sing and dance if there is a negative story about the country they are supposedly ‘patriotic’ about. Can you imagine the noise on this blog if the news had been that the harvest had failed? Some ‘patriotic’ Zambians would have been popping out the champagne bottles.

  37. No 38 i have no intention of coming back to Zambia…. what is left there is DULL people like you….  no wonder SATA is your hero

  38. @ 16 The Engineer (Australia)

Sorry blogmate, I’m not childish. The point is that even in free market economies, there is a deliberate policy to protect citizens from exploitation by unscrupulous individuals/corporates/companies. Even where you are in Australia, you cannot carry out a contract costing beyond the state set standard limits. Emerging economies like India, any manufactured/packaged good has a maximum retail price (MRP) tag, yet it’s a liberalised economy. But in Zambia, the same commodity can be sold at different prices with unreasonable differences going into thousands of Kwacha.

Please, look at issues with a functional morally right brain, instead of a corrupt stained behaviour, probably you are a beneficiary of MMD corruption, and can’t see the suffering of people.

  39. 3,020,380 Metric Tonnes of maize for 12 million people in Zambia translates to approx 20 kg per person per month. Factor in say 25% loss, damage due to weather, storage issues, etc, then it will be 15 kg per person per month. Still, that is adequate to feed ourselves, and I whole heartedly say WELL DONE!!. Now, we need to be discussing how to reduce the 25% loss and waste, (and entice voters thru that for those who only see things thru the political lens).

  40. #42.You know wats here thats why you cant even come back.Kindly come back and make you countyr a better place to live in.You are very DULL.I asked you the University you went to bt you are failing to answer such a simple question.

  41. Since we cant comment on the post, the post says “PROMIMENT people are now endorsing Michael Sata because they have realised that Rupiah Banda is a total failure, says Dr Mbita Chitala.” I laughed my lungs out. Mulongoti, chitala, mpombo.surely are they worth calling prominent? prominent but useless.

  42. Thank God for the bumper harvest in terms of maize. May He continue to give our leaders wisdom that the coutnry moves to greater heights. God raises ppl for a reason. May the bumper harvests be extended to other cash crops (rice, cassava, wheat etc) as well. We a thanks giving service at the Cathedral Of the Holy Cross. Zambia Ke Nako

  43. No. 43  I appreciate your comment. We must all understand that to develop a country does not happen over night. Go and read the history of the USA or UK, they never arrived where they are over night. It has to start somewhere…
Do not forget that we had 27 years of pro socialist rule by Kaunda over which 17 years Zambia never registered a positive GDP.
You need to put that in context and realise that not everything can happen just like that…

A few steps like a bumper harvest will take us somewhere…. yes some of it may go to waste. The next step is to secure the crop. If i read the article the minister says more storage facilities are now being built…  lets just not be negative about anything. Give credit were its due.

  44. So! Zambia has had bumper harvest 2nd year running! someone tell me,what is it that the current administration is doing that the previous administrations haven’t been doing? and since we had a bumper harvest the previous year, are the people now affording three meals a day,are there still some people out there who are starving and going hungry. What lessons have we learnt from last years bumper harvest

  45. You negative guys can you for once give credit were it is due. I am an engineer and have produced 500 x 90 kgs bag of maize. I have also other crops like kandolo. all this coz of good policies and commitment by the current leadership. Obviously my input and desire to contribute to my country. What we need to be doing now is to encourage GRZ and the private sector to move in. PF cadres this is your time to put money in your pockets. Take your canter to our uncles/unties/brothers in the farms (do not exploit them) who want transport maize to the depos rather than transporting tujilijili drunk cadres to PF rallies. What is good is good whether PF, MMD, UPND etc. Let us put suggestions that will help the good work. Mind you all this has to go with business acumen not just dictatorship!

  46. If we say there is bumper harvest, wat do we really mean?Bumper harvest of what?Well, obviously its bumper harvest of our staple food (Maize).Ok,fine we have bumper harvest! is everyone affording to have just Nshima with kapenta atleast 2 meals a day?How much is mealie meal? Will the prices of mealie meal go down within 3 to 4 months down the line? What benefit will we have as citizens of this nation if there is bumper harvest? Before we argue gentlemen we need to ask our selves such question.

  47. No need to argue about the bumper harvest, unless you dont have anything to offer. Farmers are very happy and poverty levels going very low. My uncle bought a canter my village has solar panels all over. RB has put money in the pockets of many. This is real. It is time to change attitude no govt anywhere will do everything for all its people. I stopped buying mealie meal for over two years now though am fully employed. I grow my own food. My family is happy keep it up RB.

  48. This is the worst news you can hear if you support putrid flesh (pf). A bumper harvest is a bumper harvest period and yes it does mean that there are less malnourished people in the country which will be of benefit to all of us as Zambians because it means our overall productivity will increase. Even kids will be able to concentrate more during their lessons in the newly built schools which will be of benefit to the country in the future. What Satan, the past it, and all pathetic fools supporters would like to see are images of starving and skeletal Zambians. They would rather see their fellow countrymen and women suffering just to ease the entry of a potential dictator into state house.

  49. Well, well well done GRZ under the able and honest leadreship of His Excellence Rupiah Bwezani Banda.Man of real action with no fake promises. This indeed a slap in the face people like Fred Mmeembe with his evil master Micheal Satana.Once agin well done.Nafuti 2011.

  50. Rejected Mwelwa are you saying everybody should be a farm what nonesense just because your uncle bought a second hand rejected canter post japanese tsunami you are happy.

  51. No 54 and 55  wise comments for some useless bloggers here….
I notice that only us Zambians abroad care more about Zambia…  may be its a case of staying in civilised places

  52. Iwe @ # 52 we do not need to be asking such questions. What we need to be doing is suggesting what should be done to ensure people like you benefit and also get involved in one way or another. Congrats RB and your team. Bumper harvest is real and i can see it when i drive to my farm with my children on Saturdays after 5 days of working in the mines. Bumper harvest means we producing above normal.! Paolo get busy buy some chigayo and see what more money will go into your pockets.

  53. The Engineer (Australia),
I don’t know why you wish to get into a dogfight with the perpetual pessimists on this blog who for reasons beyond my comprehension think their demise will be fixed by one politician. The reality is that they sit on their laurels in Kanyama etc dreaming day in day out. You are clearly a man of reason and I gather smart to boot. Zambians should learn to appreciate people like you who have taken the initiative to migrate and I am sure, with your farm, you have created some jobs already. Your skills, should you return home, will be invaluable. Stay proud and be patient with your lessons to some of us Kanyama residents who have never travelled beyond Kalingalinga.

  54. People, let’s have some suggestions as to how the waste can be reduced, and inflation controlled to protect the vulnerable among us rather than bicker over a non-political issue. As for you Townies get a life – a small plot and grow something. I mean Anything. Should Mr Sata win, and God forbid, I am so sure he will kick you into the long grass himself. Even he knows better than to pander to laziness. Those scraps will never arrive. Don’t say you were never warned.

  55. Bumper harvest only makes sense if people can benefit diirectly. I visit my parents regulary in Kabwe rural and it takes months for them to be paid after delivering maize to the FRA depot. The prices are also a mockery. At the end the bumper harvest does not bring mealie meal prices down. So Mr engineer while I understand your comments, I am also in a foreign land but you need to understand that there are issues on the ground that make Zambians upset over bumper harvest statements by government. Government needs to do more to what they are already doing in farm marketing and implemenets programs to ensure that the benefit cycle is complete especially at household level.

  56. Zioneke, well spoken and great advice.
Keeping working, Sir. Glad to hear you take your kids with you to the farm. Practical skills from day one although I am sure you are also priming themselves for great careers in the burgeoning Zambian economy.

  57. Mr Ziononke you probably do not rely on your farm to survive. You have a god job and you drive. This means that you can even find market for our maize without going through FRA. You can even afford to keep the maize until prices get better. But what about the poor fellow in Chief Nyawas area who has to cross rivers to get to FRA to sell their maize to buy kerosene and some salt. They need to a very qiuck, fair and effective system to support them. So dont only speak for yourself, think for the vulnerable as well and that is where the measurement of sucess must begin from. I came from that extremely struggling background so I understand the cries of the people. Dont measure success only by what you see and experience but by what your hardworking neighbour is experiencing as well. Bless you

  58. #37 shut up..who told you that Zambia is in Lusaka? bumper harvest is for all 9provinces and results shud be seen across the country..so the matter at hand is that since govt have announced bumper harvest,we expect Mealie-Meal prices to go down, distributive justice for maize, food security to be enhanced, food available to every1,pay farmers in time so they cud buy raw materials for next season..otherwise we can not call it bumper harvest nxt yr if there will be no changes in the expectations hv outlined.

  59. Job well done. Let us also invest in other sectors that use this maize such as livestock. Increased funding to Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries can be a good step too. For sure Livestock Cooperatives if supported can be another potential breakthrough. RB be assured of my vote.

  60. These clowns. When they still from public coffers and use the money to buy expensive cars, start businesses and fill their refridgerators in their home they call it bumper Harvest. For God’s sake, let the price price go down we will accept to your hullucinations

  61. What is perpetually foolish (pf) policy on agriculture? Last time I heard the Guy Scott said that they did not have one. This harvest is going to make the growth rate even higher this year and will make it harder for the opposition to win as rural voters are generally very conservative. What exactly is Satan Chilucipher offering to the villager in Chief Nyawa’s area that is different or innovative and more importantly how will he pay for it?

  62. These clowns. When they steal from public coffers and use the money to buy expensive cars, start businesses and fill their refridgerators in their home they call it bumper Harvest. For God’s sake, let the price price go down we will accept to your hullucinations

  63. These clowns. When they steal from public coffers and use the money to buy expensive cars, start businesses and fill their refridgerators in their home they call it bumper Harvest. For God’s sake, let the price of mealie meal go down we will accept to your hullucinations

  64. #66 & 67, if there was a bumper harvest last yr and farmers were not paid as per other bloggers, this yr’s bumper harvest would not have been. Frm 2.7mt to 3.0mt is a great achievement. Do not say things speculatively. Yes mayb some farmers were not paid in time but obviously 90% got in time and prepaired well for this season and it has shown. Pse GRZ, improve on last yr’s delivery, involve privte sector in the marketing so we can achieve 4.0mt next season. WELL DONE.

  65. While the bumper harvest is welcome news from our hard working farmers, it is the poor management of the harvest by the MMD govt that has always let the people down. Most of the much talked about 2009-2010 bumper harvest went to waste, it will interesting to see how this one will be managed (mismanaged).

  66. #20 (Engineer – Australia) – For an engineer it is dissappointing that your analysis of things seem to be shallow. I have observed your blogs for a while and you seem to be one dimensional in your reasoning. Can you please really tell us what GRZ has done to contribute to the bumper harvest. Is 8% increase worth celebrating? Do you think Australia could be where they are if those ex-convicts(founders of Australia) settled for 8% increments? How do you possibly expect the private sector to prosper in marketing with neighbouring countries when the cost of doing business in Zambia is so high due to lack of infrustructure. As an engineer you need to let the govt know where they fall short. To become a middle income country, Zambia has to show double digits in its development – year in year out

  67. Bumper harvest; Yes! I thank the rains which were timely. My bumper hervest is not due to MMD even in the slightest. I buy my own inputs at normal prices and depend on my employees who look after the fields. I don’t even sell to Gov. I see some are easily hoodwinked by Gov that it’s their policies that work. I think there’s a lot more farmers, than before, people in the diaspora like myself who’ve engaged in farming are contributing to the out put. However, it’s no good producing a lot of food if at the end of the day majority cannot afford it. Hopefully it’s the last bumper harvest under the MMD for some time to come.

  68. How come I’m not part of this bamba harvest…I go to bed hungry..can remember the last time I had a decent meal but Dr. Kazonga has told me to wait and be patient. He says he wants to taste all the food and see if it edible enough. He say I should give alabee another term so he can give me something to eat

  69. Those condemning this bumper harvest seem to have never experienced the poor harvests during Kaunda’s years when we had to make do with yellow maize to cover the shortfalls. This is surely great for the country and if it’s the agricultural policies that are causing this, them I can only say continue with this great work.

  70. # 33 The Engineer (Australia). You left Zambia due to poverty. Do not blame others. We are just concern that an Engineers’ reasoning is so shallow as us Kaponyas. Surely, who ever is using your designs is at high risk. What we are telling is that there is no point of celebrating something which is not benefiting us. Yes,it is good have enough Maize. Then what? The government should tell us how they are going to manage the same so that it has some benefit to all. Not rotting on road sides. So as an Engineer you may make suggestions on how they can erect cheap storage facilities.

  71. #79 I think what would be acceptable for you is if you sat on your a.rse all day and you got the bunga for free at the end of the month. Even that would not be enough as you would expect the govt to also send somebody to your house and actually do the cooking for for your lazy a.rse. The price of mealie meal has been coming down as you well know due to the fact that inflation has been coming down. If you are able to read what is going on in other African countries you will see that the price of basic commodities has been rising whereas for us it has been falling. I know it is very difficult for someone as lazy as yourself but please remove your head from the sand you have buried it in.

  72. #76 It is good that you can afford your own inputs, it means that you are prospering under the MMD regime. You are obviously one of the many who have more money in their pockets thanks to the well laid out policies of RB and his govt. People in the rural areas have enough food to feed themselves for the coming year and those in urban areas are finding food more affordable because of the low inflation rate which means that your assertion that ‘nobody can afford food’ in the country is blatantly false.  We dont have to go very far back to see what the situation would be like if there was no bumper harvest in the country. In 2002 we had to beg for food aid to meet the shortfall and were having GM maize foisted upon us. Whether you like it or not, this is a major achievement for the govt.

  73. Now Iam confused. How did GRZ find out the number of tones if maize is still in thr field awaiting harvest? So is this figure an estmate? I will not belive it until hunger is completely wiped out of zed.
As for voting sake vote PF.

  74. Someone help me please! Now that we have a bumper harvest, will the price of mealie meal go down? And why is the bumper harvest official? Does it mean without being official it would not have been a bumper harvest? What Impact will the bumper harvest have on the Zambian people?

  75. No 75    Another DULL Zambian… wasting my time to answer you. Unless you are the one who provides inputs to the farmers then GRZ contributed nothing. Which school did you go to?

  76. No. 82   You means you stay in a first world without any grain of brain in your head… mwilatusebaya

  77. #83 You are very correct to ask such a question. What I know is that when Sata becomes president, all of us will be receiving free mealie meal after 90 days.

  78. as a government in waiting we ask that you ignore our pf cadres’ comments above. we don’t know anything about farming at all, and our cadres don’t know what has hit them this year, again. meanwhile the rest of sensible zambians can rest assured that the vocal pf cadres will certainly eat the nshima put on their tables by the hard working bwezani and his farmers.

  79. No 83….  we can help you with some high school maths

    hactares planted =  A
Maize yield factor per hactare  =  Y%
    Loss factor   Z%

    Bumper harvest  =  A x Y x Z

  80. @ # 82 Mwanya Bane
Hmmm… That’s a good point. FRA has not yet bought maize from the farmers, how did Kazonga come up with such an announcement? May be from estimates from agricultural extension officers.

Those of you who think being in the diaspora makes you wise, think again. From your comments, it shows how mentally and intellectually malaised most of you are. I’m also not in the country, but I go home every year, if not twice a year, & I know that the people who are in Zambia are the ones who have the mental & intellectual muscle to keep our country floating. Lets respect each other & appreciate the difficulties a common Zambian is facing.

Don’t just insult other peoples’ intelligence & wisdom. MMD has done too much harm. Now they’ve approved K21.1bn for mobile hospitals.

  81. It is clear many people are being put to shame; Govt is repeatedly coming through with great positive strides. Food security is the cornerstone of any nation, and if we can sustainably produce such results, then clearly we’re positively inclined. Well done the people of 7ambia, well done the Govt, well done Ba RB

  82. #73,people on the ground ll not appreciate the bumper harvest when the prices of M-Meal r still high.lets use the basic economics,,if Input A(maize) is used for producing commodity B (mmeal) n when there is excess or surplus of A u expect prices of commodity B to go down,,so my arguement is that we shud expect prices of MMeal to go down otherse ll never call it B-harvest nxt yr. mind u this is not the first time Zambia has recorded B-harvest,she has done this B4 during the Mundia Sikatana era but the price of MMeal keeps on sky rocketing. While we appreciate the Government effort towards Agric sector but we need price mechanism in MMeal prices etc n i urge entrepreneurs to cm up wth MMeal companiz or any venture to capitalize on the opportunity as we see more development in our economy.

  83. where is hamper harvest when half of lusaka residents can’t afford three meals a day and you are praising humper harvest.Go to those compound you see how pipo are suffering.go to luapula pipo are feeding cassava where is humper harvest then.vote wisely vote for H.H.

  84. No 90  I asume you are in Canada. Give me two reasons why you think the use of mobile hospitals is wrong? I have seen mobile hospital in Australia being used without noise. The mobile hospital here are used for;

    1. Places which a remote and have small population which can not warrant building of permanent clinic of hospital.
    2. Specialised services such as minor eye operation and dental care.

Why do you think its wrong to use mobile hospitals?

  85. Problem with counting money is kwacha terms is that we reach a billion before the dollar equivalent even hits 250,000. Sata is going to have his last and most humiliating as.ss-whipping of his miserable life. I shall keep voting for MMD as it has created an enabling environment that has made me thrive. If u want handouts, u dont belong to the new world. VIVA RB.
NB : I am off to China to bring in 13 containers of car spares while u chaps blame everything on the rain.

  86. #92 Why are you peddling blatant lies? The price of mealie meal in Zambia has actually been falling. In addition, people are actually seeing an increase in their incomes which means that mealie  meal is now more affordable than ever. That is not to say that there are no poor people in Zambia but the numbers of those living in absolute poverty is falling. Lets not peddle blatant lies just to justify our positions. The price of food in Zambia is at the very least stable and that is why there has not been any food riots in the country like the ones that recently took place in Uganda. In fact Zambia is one of the few African countries that has not seen a price rise for basic commodities and that is why MMD will win yet again this year.

  87. Copper reaches sky high levels and the kwacha does not respond. State records two bumper harvests in a row but no benefits trickle down to the consumer. We still have the highest prices of mealie meal in the region. Nimasobela aya

  88. @94 engineeer spare us please. When did you last visit Zambia? The mobile hopsitals may be a good thing but think of the cost that will be incurred an additional K21 billion to keep them on the road. They were all launched in provincial centres save for Lusaka it is in chongwe near a newly built hospital. Does this make sense to you and can you compare this to Australia. In Zambia they are HOSPITALS in every sense of the word hence our calls to put up permanent structures

  89. # Sata chinangwa chesu. chilekeni chilimukuya. Please spare us your crap with FONG KONG spares. No one is interested in your business. People do not want handouts but the government to play its part. Do you know why you have a high turnover on your spares? One of the biggest contributor is the pathetic roads in Zambia. I bet your CONTAINERS will be full of shocks etc.

  90. #96-UMUBEMBA EMWINE WACHALO-check yo previous comment at number 86..u r the same person who says when Sata wins this yr we ll be geting free Meal Meal within 90 days,n you are the same person who said on comment number 96 that MMD ll yet win again this year…so who is making blatant lies? i have caught u,u r so dull coz u cant stand to your stance n reason intellectually.. which political party do u support? MMD or PF? from your dull contribution on this topic u have no direction-be careful..i dont debate with dull individuals like u.

  91. # 33The Engineer (Australia). So as an Engineer you may make suggestions on how they can build  cheap storage facilities.

  92. #102 That MMD  foolish muntu is using my name. I believe in PF and I know that us Bembas will get free mealie meal after 90 days when Sata becomes president.

  93. @ 65 Juzz- For your info, my survival is on my farm coz i know i can be out of employment anytime thru any route i.e resignation, mines closing, retrenchment, etc Tumbukas say “Chuma cili mudongo”. The issues you ve raised in your posting are valid and that is what you need to advise my fellow hard working people (not poor) in Nyawas area or indeed other areas to look for alternative markets, store some for a better price etc. I say so coz we just did that in our farm block! There was no real road to our farms, no bridge i.e people used to cross crocdile infested river but we came together and did the road using simple tools and later own we approached GRZ and the local GRZ was asked to provide a grader. It can be done and now we have Bumper harvest. @ 63 Apamwamba- Thanks. Congrats GRZ

  94. #105…wait wait wait a minute. r u telling me you r not the one who made comment number 88 and 98? the first comment u condemned the bumper harvest n went on to support PF,,,n the second comment on 98 u supported bumper harvest n MMD…now u r telling me that u believe in PF. just admit your failures and stop accusing UMUNTU for using your name.how?

  95. Why is it so hard for people to celebrate when their country has achieved something as great as food security? Whether you like it or not, this news makes it harder for your Satan to win this year as the rural voters are very conservative. Why should a Luvale villager vote for somebody who insulted him or her when he or she is benefiting from the policies of the RB administration? After being treated in a mobile hospital,  seeing the cost of fuel fall, and sending your son or daughter to a newly built school, it would be utter lunacy for any villager who is not a Bemba tribalist to vote for Chilucipher Satan.

  96. Whose credit is it? Some one called RB playing the god of Zambia. I bought my fertilizer cash and I managed a very good harvest because of the good weather not because of some tin god of MMD. This year every thing was favourable even INSHOKONONO shakuposa fye. I hope you will attribute this too to RBs policies? Give thanks to God that we never experience such adverse weather that is causing havoc in many countries.

  97. By giving the nation abundant rain coupled with good agricultural policies which has resulted in yet another bumper harvest, God the almighty has endorsed HERB.

  98. We should give thanks to the almighty for giving us rains and for giving us a good goverment of RB which has implemented good agriculture plocies that have given rise to a bumper harvest. O! thank you Jesus.

  99. #104

You very correct I have been having the same problem .. If I post anything Anti MMD my postings won’t show .. So now all I do is .. Praise MMD for a very good job in managing Zambia (not) but still going to vote PF.

  100. Prophets of doom we shall always have among us, just like Jesus Christ said ” the poor you will always have…. “but me you will not always have”. Any thing positive the mind of the prophets of doom always want to turn it into negative. The news of bumper harvest is always good news. What happened to the lame theory by some “independent” news papers that the country was running in Auto pilot mode? I guess this theory has now become irrelevant as it is not only untrue but a shameful one for sensational reporters. Some people think that Democracy is only when there is a change of Govt, it is equally a democracy to retain a Govt in power.

  101. # 20, 31, 39, 86 – The Engineer (Australia):
If only you knew how farmers suffer to sale their maize to FRA you wouldn’t be singing praise songs to GRZ now!
If only you knew how long it takes GRZ to pay farmers!
If only you knew how corrupt the paying system is!
If only you knew how farmers are cheated by brief-case buyers because GRZ delays to move in!
If only you knew that MMD uses the so called bumper harvest as a political weapon then you wouldn’t attack those who are trying to speak for the poor voiceless farmers.
If only you could stop thinking mechanically, this world would be a better place to live in.

  102. Deja Vu – Give credit where it is due.Who enabled you to plant in a peaceful environment?Who enabled you to buy the fertilizer within zambia?Who enabled you to buy the farm implements at a cheap price?(Farm implements are duty free).Ala muletasha bane.Thank you God for giving us this working MMD Government.

  103. 116 VJ Rigger – What credit?. I used my own money not MMD Branch Chairman Fertilizer. And grew more crops due to God given good weather.

  104. The issues raised by #115 are what we are supposed to be blogging on to find root causes and suggest solutions.

  111. Hurrah, what a quality it is! For the reason that mostly YouTube video tutorials have no nice quality, however this is genuinely a nice quality video.

  112. The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a 30 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share it with someone!|

  114. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this
matter to be really something which I think I
would never understand. It seems too complex and very broad
for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the
