Supporters of Zambia’s new president have staged a series of attacks against former ruling party members in a violent aftermath to last week’s polls, opposition and police officials said Monday.

Followers of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD), whose leader Rupiah Banda was toppled by Patriotic Front supremo Michael Sata in last week’s election, have been physically assaulted and seen their property attacked in the capital Lusaka and other parts of the country, they said.
“As I am talking to you right now, one of our members Somili Muyukwa is at the casualty ward of the University Teaching Hospital after being knifed by the Patriotic Front,’ said Scorpion Kadobi, the MMD’s youth chairman in Lusaka.

“I don’t know whether this harassment has reached the attention of the president,” Kadobi told AFP.
The head of the MMD’s youth wing in Ndola, capital of the country’s central copperbelt, said members were living in fear following the recent attacks.
“Even me, I am in fear right now because of the threats from these youths,” Arthur Mataka said. “My appeal is that the PF should ensure that people are protected from such behaviour.”

Several houses of MMD supporters had been ransacked by Patriotic Front youths and others set alight, according to Kadobi.
The latest reports of violence come after Sata’s followers rioted in slum areas around Lusaka as they awaited the results of last Tuesday’s poll. Sata was eventually declared the winner and sworn in on Friday.

Senior police official Martin Malama confirmed receiving reports of harassment from some MMD supporters and said they were being probed.
“The police have received the complaints and the matter is being investigated,” Malama said.

  1. Reality has dawned on MaRuBish MMD chaps thy thought they owned Zamba.Beat them and beat them hard before handing them over to police, more especially William Banda, Gregory Chifire, Lufwekelo, foolish Edward Mumbi and Chanda CHIMBWI they really need some good panel beating. Na CHI BOB NKOSHA chaliyamba ukutumpa na chena beat the ASS LICKER.

  2. Sata should tell his cadres that the best way to hit back on the MMD is for PF to perform better in 90 days than MMD did in 20 year. Then will shall give Sata a nobel peace prize!

  3. Wen our parents whip us its not that they hate us its 2 change us instead. These rb’s mmd minions ar very corrupt chaps, so they feel harasd wen just change they r experiencin! C’mon whip them:-)lol

  4. Well, when William Banda and Scorpion Kadibi were harrassing opposition member for all these years, what did the MMD do, they encouraged him to do the same, nafuti nafuti nafuti. They should now just swallow their own bitter medicine in silence, “asati kulila lila kwati twaiche alah!”.

  5. I have said here before that I detested William Banda for what he did. And I detest PF cadres for what they are doing! Please PF, people  voted you into power so that you rise above such pettiness/vengeance. We are are now thinking those stories of forewarned violence by PF, once in power, may be actually true.

  6. Mr President Sata, could you please help protect Zambian citizens that are being persecuted by thugs, masquerading as your party members. Zambia is bigger than an of us. the rule of law should be allowed and be seen to be implemented. despite all your good will and intentions, it is scenes like these that people were afraid of the PF govt. Governance is also about civility

  7. The sad thing in this country is that we are not understanding the source of this violence is poverty. Most of the so callled youngths be MMD or PF are just unhappy people with no jobs looking for opportunities to earn a living. PF govt now needs to help with job creation and this will die a natural death.

  8. :((am sure mmd cadres has learnt a lesson now.am jst appealing to our newly elected president H.E MR SATA to now quickly look at issues tht are r affecting us workers .we want nw to see thse mine investors make roads wre they r opperating frm and insures tht people living near those area are being well taken care of in terms of health.u knw,i grew up in mine areaz and i remember hw clean those areaz wre looking like when zccm was thre.thre wre nice roads ,houses wre built 4 employees nw o those things r gone.wre r we going please ?copper ileyafye chila bushiku…….

  9. Mr Nelson be realistic. You call these people thugs? The MMD cadres that harrased people were not thugs. Many people were angry with the MMD and they were not all PF. The President can say something but I believe the Zambia Police should not just be receiving reports and then just talk about following the matter. The Police should act and perform their duties. What kind of Police are they? I am happy that we changed governments but it’s also time that the Police changed the way they work. Arrest those people who are doing this whether PF or whoever. People are talking about PAY BACK but what they are committing is crime. ZAMBIA POLICE GO INTO ACTION. This behaviour will never help Zambia. Parties in power should learn from the PAST.

  10. While violence of any kind is not welcomed and must be condemned by all well meaning citizens, these sporadic and random acts of violence being reported in the media can be attributed to the fact that then ruling MMD institutionalized violence and its entire leadership kept silent or just paid lip service when then opposition PF were been beaten, dehumanised and humiliated by MMD cadres.
Its this violent campaign carried out against PF that has caused these patchy pay back time we are now seeing against those MMD leaders intentionally and knowingly perpetrated and encouraged violence against PF cadres.

  11. This is not a campaign of vengeance and or retribution against the entire MMD party.
Lessons must be learned here that while MMD leaders are now condemning people like william banda, these spineless leaders were mute and voiceless when william banda unleashed his violence on PF.

  12. Why I am not surprised. This is lawlessness which President Sata must come out and condemn immediately. This is not politics but a bunch of marginalised hungry youth with little hope for the future. This is a nightmare any Government in Zambia will face in short to medium term.

President Sata good luck with the job creation.

  13. Reign of terror by PF continues. This is something the Post, Times, Daily-mail and even PFNBC will not report on. This is sad news indeed. Mr. Sata should tame his cadres before they set this nation alight. PF is now in government, it is time to get rid of this “opposition politics” mantra and start governing.

    • Fusek. Ilyo Baletuponona ba MMD tamwalelandako. F.cuk you and your double standards. We lived in fear under MMD, and you were there justifying that nonsense. This is not PF retribution. Its is a reaction from the people who were victimised.

  14. When the shoe is on the other foot? Hello!!!! Any one?

Did you guys aggitate like this when one William Banda was king of erm Zamunda? I am loving this!

    • Until it happens to your family members maybe thats when you will see that this is wrong. what william banda and his MMD thugs did was wrong but this is just as wrong. These youths are just criminals with an excuse to terrorize and loot. Cann’t you see that or you are just a poor excuse of a human being..

  15. @#16. So why won`t ZNBC, Times and Daily Mail report this? It`s the seed you planted in them. But don`t worry our government will change it and leave you with egg in face. Pathetic people you are!

  16. And people of the MEDIA, be wise and professional in your reporting. Every act of harrassment is now associated with PF, could that be true or is it because PF is ruling and so every reaction from the community is now PF? I am just wondering. It is possible that some crooked people may also be taking advantage of the situation on the ground to perform their acts of crime knowing that the blame will be pointed towards PF. I still believe that the Police should act quickly. Why is it that in our country the Police are good at receiving reports and many times arrests are not made. How many reports have we had so far and how many arrests have been made? We need a Police that acts without waiting for the President to say something.

  17. #9 Poor Zed People has a good point there.

We have to understand that nobody was born violent, circumstances make people what they are. Most of these cadres are hitting back because they still feel that MMD is responsible for their miseries, which have not changed with the change of government. The only way to way to break the chain of strife in the community is to give these people a different perspective: jobs, business opportunities and youth empowerement programmes is the best alternative.

  18. Only the guilty go hiding. I hope PF learns a lesson from these MMD cowards and never to do or be the same to other opposition parties. As my new hero RB said in his last speech “Do unto others what you would want them to do unto you” (well not his exact words). Wise words!!!!

  19. we should take note that even within the mmd, there were disgruntled elements who have now found chance to revenge against senior members. some of them were given money and other campaign material to share but did not do that. some made others to work without paying them even when money was available. ala the violence should not be blamed on pf only

  20. You have been beaten for only less than a week and the whole world is informed how long did you touch the PF cadres? Why reporting to the police now,why didn’t you control William Banda? Do you now how it feels to be scared in your own country????? Shut up at stomach it at least for 1 year.

  21. PF, please, thats not the way to go! but you cant blame them! i can only guess what could have happened had the MMD won the elections! ala nganatunya!

    Posted: Tuesday, September 27, 2011, 9:32AM –

Gold and copper fall to lowest level since 2008 crash
The commodity prices of gold and copper suffered their largest fall since 2008 at the start of this week as traders rushed to reduce their exposure to the key commodity amid growing fears of the sovereign debt crisis in Europe.

According to Reuters, US crude fell nearly $3 and silver lost as much as 16% on Monday as other metals were “nose-diving” when investors rushed into cash and dollars. The news agency also noted that gold fell 5.8% to $1,561.69 an ounce by 0713 GMT on Monday. Bullion which just hit a record high of $1,920.30 on Sept. 6, dropped to as low as $1,534.49 on Monday, its lowest level since early July.

  23. The truth is coming out that PF members are thugs, harassment began before announcing electiom results pf cadres ransacked and destroyed shops in Copperbelt reason, they are thugs. We don’t condon violence, William Banda, Kadobi if committed any offence courts are under pf govt, let law take its course. A reminder that in Kenya post election violence took this slow and selective targeting and the targeted retaliated because no one protected them. This is exactly where its lesding. If the pf govt do not act MMD members have to protect themselves with what ever means availble. Zambians have changed govt and the govt is expected to be responsible. As at now the pf govt is busking in moonlighting as violence is mated to innocent Zambians. What a beginning!.

  24. Advice to the PF and their supporters: When Amnesty International and others start putting these stories and figures on paper, the presidency of HE MCS will be in trouble. The stories of the ICC look far fetched for now, but they could become real tomorrow. My plea to the PF bloggers is for them to search their consciences and start condemning this violence. The PF needs to start making points now even on this seemingly enconsequential issue of payback for the wrongs perpetrated by the MMD. Fore-warned is fore-armed as they say. Please, the campaigns are over now. We are all Zambians at the end of the day i.e. none are more Zambian that others.

    • Where were you when MMD was beating people in Mufumbwe, Chongwe, Mazabuka, Western Province? This is not PF policy at work. This a reaction of the masses who were victimised. PF will deal with it soon enough. For now, a taste of your own medicine.

  25. Lets not create the monster of hooliganism.

The violence associated with cadrelism should be condemned and not ecouraged. This has to come from the PRESENT leadership. IT IS URGENT TOO. If this might against PF in the future. Talk about Zuma and the monster youth league ( Malema) working against him now.

  26. Infact people are saying this is all being done by MMD members who didn`t get sugar, ifitenge and ama brown envolopes. Go sort yourselves out first.

  27. How SATA will address these PF thugs will determine whether we have entered KAPONYA administration or not.
It will determine whether the leaders are mature or imature.
It will determine whether the leaders are democratic or not.
It will determine whether Zambia is on the right path or not.
It will determine whether we have right or wrong leadership.

  28. Ba PF naimwe, that not the way to go! but again, i dont blame you! i can only imagine what could have have happened had the MMD won. They could have finished you off!

  29. TONGA PEOPLES PARTY WHERE IS YOUR 20HH?, GONE TO HELL WITH ALL YOU LOT KA? THE MAN YOU CALLED TOO UGLY,DULL UNEDUCATED BEMBA KAPONYA IS YOUR RULER
.YOUR UNDER5 VERY EXPERIENCED LOSER WILL NEVER GET PLOT 1, WE SHALL MAKE SURE PF WORKS HARD AND MAKES JOBS FOR MANY AND MAKE SURE WE DO ANOTHER 3 TERMS BY WHICH TIME UNDER5 WILL BE ABOVE 70 BITTER SWEET THIS IS

  30. #17 Bunga. Got to agree with you brother. These people are only crying because it doesn`t suit them. Chin up opposition party. Where is MMD Chief BootLicker? Must be busy on his knees to State house. Pleading for another job.

  31. If MMM, RB and William Banda and the rest committed sins, they should be forgiven. If they committed crimes against the Zambian people and against the constitution, MMD should not be forgiven but face the consequences

  32. Some people have very shallow minds. How can someone celebrating go to attack and ransack a house? Do not forget that within themselves, some did not like the way they were being treated and mistreated opposition. Selfishly some got bicycles and money without sharing and colleagues knew about it these are the same attacking. Donchi Kubeba also defused the tension somehow as it was not easy to who belonged to what party. MMD are just fighting each other. The real PF are practicing citizen arrest as we have seen in Chipata. Others are just hooligans who may have been hired by the same people complaining. Long live Zambia long live PF and congratulations!!!

  33. GOOD NEWS, WILLIAM TEKERE BANDA HAS BEEN ARRESTED IN CHIPATA TODAY BY THE POLICE. THIS CHI BANDA SHOULD NOT GET AWAY AND HE MUST BE CAGED. FOR LIFE.

    • Chanda was stating facts I believe. Its only that people were not interested.Sata is no angel just ask Miyanda,Nawakwi and if the dead could talk, ask Christon Tembo as well.

  34. The press seem to be sensationalising this issue, becoz when PF members were on the receiving end, their stories were ignored, however, am sure the police, will reign in the few tarnishing PF ‘s name, without waiting for a presidential directive! Or is it that Kabonde has gone into hiding????

  35. These are insolated incidences. The police with carry out a thorogh investigation to get the bottom of it. No stone will be left unturned until the culprit are brought to book. …lol

  36. The solution is simple, police should just arrest the mmd thugs and there won’t be anyone to harass.that way justice will be saved.but the police seem to be waiting 4 a party carder to tell them what to do.so when people say the police were taking sides this is what it means

  37. an eye for an eye will not only make the whole world blind also fill the whole world with blood. Zambia is this what we want? If we dont act now, PF will become another violent party. I say enough of violence; we are all Zambians.

  38. I weep for the victims, I weep for the attackers, I weep for the police, and I weep for the president.
Can we stop the madness please! This country does not belong to PF, or Sata, or MMD, or Banda. It belongs to us all. If you do the crime, you must do the time. If anyone is attacking you, you should report them to the police — and the police should respond accordingly. If they police don’t do anything, people will be forced to defend themselves. Copper prices have dropped in value this week, investor confidence will start to drop, the kwacha has lost value. Please stop the madness. People can not be productive when they do not feel safe.
    :-w

  39. THERE IS NO JUSTIFICATION WHATSOEVER IN WHAT THE PF SUPPORTERS ARE DOING.IT IS A DEMOCRATIC RIGHT TO BELONG TO A PARTY OF YOUR CHOICE.VIOLENCE WILL ONLY BREED VIOLENCE.THE PRESIDENT MUST NOT TURN A BLIND EYE TO WHAT IS HAPPENING.THESE THUGS HAVE TAKEN THE LAW INTO THEIR OWN HANDS .WHERE IS JUSTICE AND EQUALITY?.WHERE ARE THE POLICE ,THE CHURCHES AND CIVIL SOCIETY?

  40. and the same people condemed Banda that he turned a blind eye to his violent cadres and they are doing the same.Sata should act upon these thugs if he truly is a man of action. There is no justification whatsoever in these acts.If anything, they just confirm my fears. This party we have opted to lead us is composed of thugs who believe in violence to achieve their means.

  41. one two!!

move! one two three!!! move! one two three four uppercut and move!! six!! two body punches and weave!!! thats how to go pf soldiers. get them and show them.

  42. The law must be allowed to take its course as it has happened to William Banda. Fellwo PF members let us show MMD that we have moved beyond their cheap and backwaqrd politics of intimidation. Zambia is for all Zambians regardless of political affiliation.

  43. 1st Major job of the president is to pull the ranks and stop these thugs ,all that your showing zambians and the rest of the world is the mmd was better than you.

  44. I take it that those people who predicted that PF is a violent party were actually right. We have already seen that within the first 90 days things are happening including the beatings we are seeing here and there. So this is the change some people were preaching about. Just imagine this is just the beginning and hell has already broken loose. People were also right when they said this is a Kaponya party. And what do you expect from Kaponyas; they always think using their physic and not their brains.
