CHIZONGWE Technical School pupils who went on rampage last Saturday, destroying school property at Anoya Zulu Day High School in Chipata will pay for the damage caused.
Eastern Province Minister Charles Banda, who confirmed this in an interview in Chipata, said school property worth K200 million was damaged at Anoya Zulu Day High School when Chizongwe Boys pupils went to avenge the alleged assault of their school-mate at an inter-school sports competition held in Chipata.
Mr Banda described the behaviour of Chizongwe boys as unfortunate.
“We decided to close Chizongwe Technical School because we foresaw further riotous behaviour by the pupils. The public will be notified in due course on how much each pupil should pay towards the damage,” he said.
He urged pupils not to resort to violence and malicious damage of property as a way of settling disputes warning that such behaviour will not be condoned.
“I would like to urge school children to desist from such behaviour because it is criminal- malicious damage to school property is a punishable offence,” the Minister said.
He said the fate of the ring-leaders and those who participated in the riot will be decided by the school authorities.
The Minister explained that the closure of Chizongwe Boys Technical School was not indefinite, but a temporal measure to pacify the situation, because it was clear that further clashes between pupils from the two schools were imminent.
Eastern Province education officer, Pilila Jere, also condemned the riotous behaviour by Chizongwe boys, and expressed hope that the unfortunate incident would not repeat itself.
Ms Jere said it was sad that inter-school zone games could end up in the destruction of school properties.
Some parents interviewed in Chipata, also condemned the riotous behaviour by Chizongwe boys after inspecting the damaged school properties at Anoya Zulu Day High School.
“I want to say that am very disappointed with this kind of behaviour. Anoya Zulu is a centre of excellence in the province. I hope Chizongwe boys will refrain from such behaviour because malicious damage of property is a punishable offence,” she said.
Chizongwe Technical School pupils broke classroom windows and smashed the windscreen of the school bus at Anoya Zulu Day High School last Saturday after pupils from the latter allegedly beat up their school-mate at an inter-school sports tournament.

I remember time of late Masaninga 9MHSRIP) we were very disciplined pupils. Chipata day was not even there football was at climax with Nasilele as sport master.

@ Former Chizy boys: I suspect we were at that school around the same time. Do you remember the first time we walloped Chipata Day. Masaninga ( MHSRIP ) organized a party for the whole school. That time Anoya Zulu was not yet born….
This really makes sad reading to me as a former pupil and student at both Schools. The move by these youths is very retrograsive as other youths are fighting for mor money in their pockets. Some of these kids come from very poor families and I am sure that what ever will be demanded from these erring pupils toward renovations very few will manage to raise the amount.

Fight for supremacy. The problem is Anoya wants to compete with Chizzy hence the fight I remember in 2003 the two schools wanted to fight for a position in DK staduim (holy corner) which resulted in the shifting of the tournament to Petauke after tips that there would be serious fights.

For those that have passed through Chizongwe, you will know that fights against the likes of Chipata Day is almost an annual ritual. Participated in one myself; we woke up at mid-night and fought running battles with police in Holywood. I know it’s sort of crazy thing to do but hey, when you are Chizzy Metal, you gotta just do it. What’s up to all former Chizzy Metals!!
We need to establish the history of resolving isues in our country before we condemn these boys. They see it from their parents. If they want an increment for example, they have to strike, throw stones etc. No one looks at isues seriously until something happens. Very sad indeed. After so many years of independence. Where were the school authorities of both schools? It should not end at pupils alone.

I was the House Captain for Skeva Soko House, t Ihe only house with a surname. Anoya Zulu Basic Secondary School has been trying to wrestle power from Chiz Metals since they killed the Chiz Metal goal keeper during inter-schools, during which they were given the first dose of the Heavy Metal dosage.
How I wish they used write rods to whip all the pupils and their teachers during class time, daytime invasion.
