FIRST Lady Christine Kaseba has said the successful removal of the 14.5 kilogramme tumour from Robiana Muteka by University Teaching Hospital (UTH) doctors is a clear indication that Zambia has skills to handle complicated health cases.

Dr Kaseba said yesterday when she visited Robiana at the hospital that UTH doctors had demonstrated that the country had good expertise despite many challenges they were facing in their duties.

A team of 15 doctors carried out a successful two-hour operation on the 24-year-old Robiana, who was referred to UTH from Livingstone on the directive by President Michael Sata.

“What they have done only goes to show that we have the skill here, we have the expertise and what we may lack is technology and some equipment that may really push UTH to be doing what it is supposed to do,” she said.

“The case has also demonstrated that UTH is a tertiary medical centre.I am happy as a doctor. My appeal to the Government and the president is to look into the plight of the UTH.”

Dr Kaseba, who had a brief chat with Robiana, commended the doctors and other medical personnel at the country’s biggest referral hospital for undertaking a successful surgery on the 24-year-old.

She said the case had attracted a lot of attention and expectations from the time it was reported with some people expecting it to be referred for specialist treatment outside the country.

The first lady, who also visited Chief Chikanta, who is admitted at the same hospital, said people who were speculating the health of others had nothing to do and hoped the Government could give them something.

She noted with sadness that some people had continued to speculate the health of President Sata even when they knew very well that he was fine.

“The issue of Mr Sata’s health is not new, but these speculations are done in bad faith. In fact it is some of you who were reporting that he had collapsed in North-Western Province,” she said.

And speaking from his hospital bed, Robiana thanked President Sata for showing kindness by allowing his evacuation from Livingstone to receive specialist treatment at UTH.

Robiana, who informed the first lady that he wanted to study medicine in future following the successful operation, said it was not easy to get such an opportunity to receive specialist treatment.

“I thank the president, it is not easy to have this opportunity that he has given me. The doctors are so good here, they are taking good care of me and I ask you to say thank you for me to the president,” he said.

  1. Why did some tell her that Kunda is also there we could have loved to hear she visited him. This christian country- just accept gay and porn you are bad you people

  2. Zambians please, concentrate on building your country for the betterment of your children and their children’s children. Talking about this one doing this and that, and/or that so and so is dead is in itself retrogressive. Lets tackle serious issues like road infructure, chorella, drainage system, paving all major walk-ways/paths etc. These are major challenges facing the country today. But as long as we keep talking, talking and talking, nothing will ever happen. Shame on you (especially imwe mwebalozi/Tonga tribalists)…

  3. Zambian medical doctors have always excelled, be they in Zambia or in the diaspora. The training of the Zambian doctors at Ridgeway Campus Medical School, UTH is second to none.
Wish the patient a successful recovery; wish the doctors many more successes; and wish the First Lady well.

  4. So why did your Ukwa go India for TURP,a mere two hours procedure ?Dr Manda is an expert in that field of things.Shame on you hypocrite Kaseba.

  5. Zambian doctors are very unprofessional and useless, they only work well under the supervision of whites ask the former patients. They are money mongers with no duty of care at all maybe they need Ukwa to supervise them. They are among the least exposed doctors to medical technology in the world.

  6. @#7 u r a disgracing character who has no morals. Pointing a finger at this n that tribe is a sign of tribalism. Could u plz shut ur mouth if u do not av better issues to contribute

  7. #7 well spoken.lets all work hard.frm the presido to the street vendor.employment ,health, education, social amneties, this is want we want to hear u morons talk about.take heed!

  8. Thank you God for the healling, When Gods time comes you can not do anything its not becouse ba kateka did direct some exeperts.

  9. # Bashi Kay, Please shut up, you are heavily drunk with tujilijili and are starting to halucinate. Just invite your friend # Mwape Mbokeme who has taken too much kachasu, for a useless drunken chat where you’ll blame the departure of your brains on Tongas and Lozis!

  10. sorry 1st lady what this case shows is that our health care system is crap. i don’t think the president will manage to find all those in need of surgical care and refer them to UTH. this guy was lucky and needs to thank the president

  11. Why didn’t that Mrs Kaseba (woman who never accept his husband’s name), visit the real Vice-President Kunda while she was UTH?

  12. #17 Nostradamus – whatever you call yourself. Show respect to the First Lady. Dr Kaseba and not Mrs Kaseba, as you have put it, has earned her title through hard work. It is common knowledge that even here in the US, people who have worked hard to earn their reputation maintain their original names in marriage. Learn to show respect to elders and especially the First Advisor to the President.

  13. Nostradamus

Please keep your ignorance to yourself, for your own information most females receive their Md before they get married and it would be difficult to change.
Furhtermore, the name on the certificate will then be in her maiden name and trust me its HARD to change. Universities aren’t keen on altering any certificates already issued. Its easier to keep their maiden names.
Another reason is because many women start their practices in their maiden names and then get married. Their clients know them with their maiden name and its more profitable to stick to that name then… Since most doctors win their clients via word of mouth.

  14. wonder why all you “FOREIGNERS” make so much noise about mother Zambia. Come home and see things for yoselves not asking the First lady to visit GK for you! We need yo s**** hands to develop this nation.

  15. I we chi Dr Kaseba ulichipuba sana don’t show your ignorance here:>

President Sata is a Zambian public figure so us Zambians have the right to know everything that Sata is doing. I though you are an educated person but now i know who you are! Ignorant!

For sure Iwe chi Dr Kaseba should know that in the democratic countries its your duty as a wife to the Zambian President to inform us what is going with Sata. You don’t expect Zambians to keep quiet when you sneak out of Zambia in the name of a private visit without informing us Zambians the owners of Zambia.

Dr Kaseba i expected you to sit down after coming back to Zambia from India (where you wasted our money) and read thru advise especially from the Post Newspaper about sneaking out unannounced like you did!

  16. Dr Kaseba please don’t insult us Zambians that we are idle for trying to know the truth about you sneaking out of Zambia on our tax payers money!

You should have handed over whatever was going on Sata to the Minister of Information to at least update us on the real truth. NOT THE HASTILY DONE INVESTMENT TALKS THAT ZAMBIANS WERE TOLD ABOUT!

Its just simple:> telling Zambians the truth behind whatever is going with Sata could have helped Zambians (like Venezuela’s President Chavez has been doing) to sympathize with President Sata and put him in prayers.

  17. Its too early to say the operation was successful!

1.And my fellow Zambians DO YOU believe that UTH has the capacity to prevent this operated wound from being infected?

2.If Zambia has competent Medical personnel, why was Dr Kaseba (the wife to President Sata) taken to South Africa when she was sick? Why didn’t Dr Kaseba refuse to go South Africa and go at UTH for treatment?

All Zambians leaders don’t go to UTH for treatment UNLESS its a TERMINAL illness, they just go to South Africa or India as Dr Kalumba did!

3.So can i say that Robiana Muteka was taken to UTH because he is poor and can not afford overseas treatment as POLITICIANS DO?

4.Or did the UTH Surgical team use Robiana Muteka as an EXPERIMENTAL guinea for them to learn more?

  18. I couldn’t help but shed tears when reading, esp. where Robiana asks the first lady to pass on his gratitude to the President. My fellow Doctors, where were we before the tumor grew that big?Let us keep our oath by doing what we promised to do when attending those medical school. Its such a shame that we let an innocent boy suffer for a long time. Lets reflect on our lives!!! God will surely judge us by our deeds. May God richly bless you Robiana, may you find favor in Jehovah and may he grant your wish so that one day you may also save a life.

  19. That is alright #17 Global Citizen. Start the discussion.
I hope that you have your numbers of Nigerian trained, South African trained, Ugandan trained and Zambian trained medical doctors (migration / brain-drain) looking after patients and systems of the Western World. Not proud about “brain -drain” but it is a fact. My Ridgeway Campus UNZA training seems to have worked in Zambia, Botswana, South Africa and UK. Now writing books for medical students and nurses in Western World having identified their “NK (No knowledge).” Unless you are telling me that things have changed terribly. Must admit that it was 25 years ago when I did my training under the Makulus, Chintus, Mulaishos, Baileys, Nkanzas and teh other great teachers.
