UNZA to open on July 8th

Share

A sigh of relief has finally come to the University of Zambia-UNZA- Great East Road Campus following the calling off of the strike action by lecturers. This follows the decision by government to release additional funds to supplement lecturers’ salaries at the institution

University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union-UNZALARU- president Euston Chiputa is happy over the increment but remains tight lipped on the exact figures.

He however stresses the need to harmonize salaries for all public universities, claiming that UNZA lecturers are the least paid among other institutions of learning.

Senate has since announced that the institution will be opened on July 8th 2012.

  1. Atleast but work on the Hon as while and find how to put more and i mean more money in peoples’ pockets marabbish!

  2. PF has shamed those who thot govt was up to trick them. MCS, a grade 4 has done better than those graduates who have been thru UNZA!!! Congrats MCS. Show them!!!!

  3. so exactly how many years behind are the current UNZA students now. If we do not mature over the running of our higher institutions we will have people entering as teens and leaving +30!

  4. There is nothing to congratulate for here as the strike was needless had the govt done the right thing right at the beginning. To provide solution under the gun to the head define existence of incompetence of the govt. What will happen to the youths yearning for employment, is PF govt waiting for an uprising from youths before employing them? PFand Mr Sata have to provide employment to youths as promised during campaigns. There shouldn’t be BUTs and IFs unless Mr Sata was fooling the youths. At most explain to the youths how and when unemploment will be resolved in the nation.

  5. You see Zambians. If you want more money in the pockets. Go on strike like UNZA lecturers did. Otherwise you will be given a run around

  6. We need long term measures to be put in place, not reactionary measures. Its ok for now, the lecturers are happy but what happens when they go back to the bargaining table next year? We don’t don’t want this merry-go-round to continue, UNZA has to be stable! Salaries among the 3 public universities must be harmonized! Also look at the plight of students, provide adequate accommodation, the issue of boarding houses must come to an end!

  7. Its gud we openin. My congrats goes to the lecturers for bein able 2 compromise on their demands. Its now on govt & unzalaru 2 ensure tht they follow up on their on their agreements.Salary harmonisation shud be gradual so we expect it 2 continue nxt yr.

  8. You always reap what you sow more money in the lecturers pockets #Donchi Kubeba slogan#

  9. There is indeed nothing to congratulate pf about here. They have simply fine what they shud have done in the 1st place

  10. To the people in authority.

Please introduce performance based bonuses as opposed to giving salary increments across board. Let all government institutions demonstrate reason (practical not theory) to receive what they deserve. If can make performance based bonuses / increments attractive, we might see change in government operations pa Zed.

Out of topic.. ba Lusaka Times why are all blogger flags foreign? Are there no Zambian bloggers? My flag is wrong too.

    • I meant bloggers living in Zambia.
Also ba LT, please provide a button for correcting an entry, or is it just me who can’t find that button?

  11. Nothing to congratulate Mr. Sata and his PF government on this one. The strike should not have happened in the first place. This fire fighting strategy is outdated. We do not need people to go on strike for them to get what they deserve. This government is breeding anarchy. Treat the cause not the symptons. Absoultely no plan. Maybe loss in the by elections will spur some thinking and planning. Does a government need a strike to do its job? Boss ba Sata Micheal you have failed
