Police on the Copperbelt have arrested former United Party for National Development (UPND) national chairperson Joe Kalusa over the statements he allegedly made on Forum for Development and Democracy (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi.
Mr Kalusa was on Monday reported to have issued a statement in one of the daily papers that he would organize people to gang rape the FDD leader.
Copperbelt UPND provincial Elisha Mutambo yesterday confirmed the arrest of Mr Kalusa who was in custody at Ndola central police station.
Mr Mutambo said police arrested Mr Kalusa from Kapiri Mposhi on Monday around 17.00 hours. He lamented that he and his other colleagues from the party had been trying to get him out of the police cells the whole of yesterday morning but police told them that he would only be released from the cells around 16.00 hours yesterday.
“Imagine, they followed him all the way to Kapiri and arrested him. This is the more reason we are saying that this country has been turned into a police state. We have been trying to have him released but police have kept on turning us away,” Mr Mutambo said.
Mr Mutambo charged that police were acting under pressure from government as it wanted to suppress the UPND. He added that the UPND was not going to be suppressed and intimidated by such moves which were aimed at oppression.
“We are not going to be intimidated. Zambia belongs to the 13 million of us, whether tall or short, black or white. No one is above the other,” He noted.

At @2, there is a law for such cases. You can actually be arrested for saying that as that is regarded as a “threat on one’s wellbeing”, you can also be arrested for “Verbal assault”. Such cases usually carry lighter sentences or merely fines but its still a conviction and goes on record for criminal offence. Know the law my brother and dont wallow in ignorance. Just saying.
That is an ugly threat which deserves to be punished severely. If it has been customary for men to speak that way, it needs to stop.
