Over 100 PF slogan chanting thugs this morning attacked UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema during the requiem mass for late Mama Betty Kaunda at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka.
Mr. Hichilema escaped the attacks after he was whisked away by his alert security team.
The PF cadres however managed to lynch UPND officials Edward Mumbi and William Banda in full view of police officers.
The cadres shouted that Mr. Hichilema should not be allowed to attend the funeral service.
By the time the cadres were descending on the UPND leader, he had already entered the Cathedral building were Mama Betty’s body was put in state.
And in interviews with Journalists shortly after the fracas, Mr. Hichilema accused President Michael Sata of hiring thugs to cause violence at the funeral service.
“These are Sata’s hired thugs, he is paying people to come and attack Hakainde. This is unacceptable and the Church should stand and denounce this violent conduct,” Mr. Hichilema said.
“I came here to pay my last respect to my mother, I went to the funeral house yesterday and today we are attacked. What kind of a country is Sata running?”
Meanwhile, Mr. Mumbi warned that the PF should not promote street anarchy because the UPND has the potential to fight back.
“It’s only that am a strong man, they attacked me, over 100 of them. My word to President Sata and Wynter Kabimba is that, if this is how they want to govern this country, let them be our match. We will fight to defend ourselves.”
And Council of Churches of Zambia General Secretary Suzanne Matale who witnessed the violence said the conduct of the PF cadres should be condemned in the strongest terms possible.
Reverend Matale said the Church in Zambia will not sit and watch Zambia degenerate into lawlessness.
She has since challenged President Sata to personally come out and condemn the actions of his cadres.

I am not an advocate of violence and really I condemn what PF cadres have done if they did it. I hope the police should get to the bottom of this. However, it is odd that HH seem to be attracting anarchy as if he is the only opposition. What I know is that he has the tendancy to provoke – just to get attention.

Zambian morals at funerals is known in every corner of Zambia. Mr Sata is in power and has the liverage to cause anarchy and means to prevent it. Prosecute them for public violence, intimidation, assault with intent to do grievance bodily harm (assault GBH), assault common and attempted murder. In addition to that, add further charges such as instigating violence, crimen injuria. The state should deny them bail until all cases are finalised by a relevant court because the evidence is available to secure convictions in all the above cases. I suggesting the following: – One way of stopping this behaviour, particularly at funerals of prominent people and at political rallies is to take a leaf from the Football hooliganism here in Europe among fanatics. The hostile rivalry among fanatics, or fans for short, coupled with racial hostility is very similar to that of our political cadres in Zambia. And the young age rage of those involved is the same. My suggestion is this, for any future funerals of political leaders, for the sake of maintaing peace in the country, attendance should be STRICTLY BY INVITATION. Suspected UPND cadres in Livingstone on Tuesday allegedly continued with their violent activities and beatings.
The latest is where the cadres allegedly roughed up a funeral procession after they mistook mourners for PF cadres.
The incident happened near Maramba area where UPND cadres stopped a van carrying mourners and started beating them on suspicion that they were PF cadres.
And one of the women Susan Zulu sustained a serious injury on her face.
Livingstone UPND spokesperson Neto Halwabala confirmed that the UPND has commenced the Mapatizya formula of beating in Livingstone.

I don’t support whatever happened if at all it is true BUT where are the pictures that can show people the lynching that is claimed by LT. On the other hand, Zambian politics stink. Whenever I get a paper I hate reading about Zambian politics. The so called cadres are also the same and it does not matter whether they are PF, MMD or UPND. They are all useless. Zambia is in a very great need for leaders. We don’t have them.

According to my academic perspectives, one cannot label a person/s a criminal/s or assign identities to a person/s based on suspicions or what the media feeds its audiences. Furthermore, an admission of guilty by a suspect does not amount to a conviction, therefore an admission of guilty cannot be viewed as a fact or a conviction. And/or, in the case of what you allege as a settlement out of court involving ‘a’ Mr. Banda and some ‘victim’ simply identified as a journalist, such a matter is normally permitted by courts and again it does not imply that an accused is guilty of the charge before the court. Your ‘facts’ are not facts at all. Hire me as your attorney I can guarantee you a string of acquittals. Viva BROTHER HH.

I requested you to draw up a charge sheet not to provide me with stories from some journalist who does have legal training in reading between lines and tearing a witness into pieces in the witness box. What you need is to master the gorgons used in the legal fraternity of highest international standards and you have to know how to play with these gorgons to win a case/s.Lesson number one, never assign identities to your opponent. Second, always portray a picture that you are dull. Third, put pertinent questions to a witness and rewound them in different manners, in short rephrase them. Fourth, do not be emotional, always look for major inconsistencies not minors ones. Pretend to be concerned & sensitive to the state witness, that is the most weakness of witnesses

The media is not a court of law but one can compare it to a ‘court of public opinion’. All public opinions which are being reciprocated by Zambians and for Zambians about comrade HH are built on shaky foundations of both structural victimisation and institutional victimisation. The above two forms of victimisation are prevalent in all institutions of the state i.e. in the police dept. in the judicial system, the correctional dept. etc. The sectors of the public are also urged to assign to false identities to COMRADE HH. The state has also built an oppressive and exploitative relation with UNPD then tell me, is that the sort of leadership which should be charged with the onus of discharging good governance in your country? Viva HH, UNPD and peace to all Zambians.
Those are the people who elected Sata. Educated people must start voting to prevent someone like that to ever becoming president again.

It’s a pity and also very unfortunate that such a shameful thing is still on the seen in this beautiful land of Z. PF is also little by little becoming like a cancer to this land. If they cannot remove this cancer, i m afraid bcoz it may take them to a loss. Such cadres must be deported to the desert so that they can be fighting with loneliness together with the one who sent them if at all there is any.
