State owned telecoms firm ZAMTEL has announced plans to turn its Mwembeshi Earth Station into a data recovery center as part of efforts to commercialise the facility.

Opened in 1974, with its old equipment, the Mwembeshi Earth Station is feared will turn into a white elephant as it fails to catch up with modern technology.

But ZAMTEL Chief Technical Officer Sidney Mupeta said transforming the Mwembeshi Earth Station into a data recovery center is one of the ways in which ZAMTEL will keep the Earth Station viable.

“From the commercial side, we are looking at cloud hosting and turning this facility into a data recovery center for various big organisations,” Mr. Mupeta said.

“As ZAMTEL, we are already in discussions with a number of organisations interested in having their files hosted here. Mwembeshi is a good facility because of its location which is far from town and crowded areas just in case of a riot,” he said.

Mr. Mupeta said the development is part of ZAMTEL’s move to evolve the usage of the Mwembeshi Earth Station from just carrying voice and data traffic.

He also revealed that ZAMTEL which owns about 2 percent shares in the Eassy undersea cable is also exploring ways of linking its optic fiber backbone to the East African undersea network.

“We are exploring those options of going round the East African link so that in case there is a failure on our existing route through to Namibia, we then can have uninterrupted services through the East African route,” Mr. Mupeta said.

Mr. Mupeta was speaking yesterday when Communications, Works and Transport Minister Christopher Yaluma toured the Mwembeshi Earth Station outside Lusaka.

  1. Copying from your friend in class was called umwembeshi. “Dull” chaps would tune their heads and eyes (satellite receivers) such that they can pick what their “bright” neighbour is writing. Ooh, try to do that ba Zamtel if you have the money. Shall you need the Chinese, don’t hesitate to engage them for they surely will help you move quickly.

  2. No you id********ts chishala is a technician. We are following what they wrote the reporters. They the way he was explaning.

  3. “Mwembeshi is a good facility because of its location which is far from town and crowded areas just in case of a riot.”

Serious….? If this so-called advantage of Mwembeshi is worth mentioning, I can only wonder what exactly all the PF cadres at Zamtel are expecting.

  4. #8 do you know what a data center is? It is among other things a backup area is case your company gets gutted by fire, floods, etc and you need to start afresh. Ubututu you should be travelling and get to know these things. Most data center in the world are in remote places others underground. Take for example if BoZ gets on fire today with your MMD fire system in place.I know the UPND will be happy but will BoZ recover.

  5. Its a shame all our young intelligent brains have left the country for greener pastures. I can help set up a Data center for these guys. I can install state of the art back up systems running on Linux servers, Cisco routers, Iron port monitoring devices and ASA’s. Only a network engineer and System Administrator like me would know what am talking about. Most of those people present in that room know nothing of what they were staring at and simply followed for the ride and also see the satellite first hand and close.

  6. An fascinating dialogue is price comment. I feel that you need to write extra on this subject, it may not be a taboo topic however usually persons are not enough to talk on such topics. To the next. Cheers
