Mines, Energy and Water Development Minister Yamfwa Mukanga has condemned the dismissal of 11 senior managers at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) in Chingola without giving them reasons.

Mr Mukanga said it was professionally wrong to dismiss an employee without giving reasons for termination of employment.

He said in an interview yesterday that all mining firms in the country should follow laid down labour laws and regulations regulating their operations when dismissing employees.

The minister said Government would not tolerate companies breaching the laws of the country and that the Patriotic Front (PF) administration was interested in generating more jobs for locals.

He urged the Ministry of Labour to establish what lead to the dismissal of the Zambian senior managers.

“The mining companies should follow the labour laws of the country and the Ministry of labour should take up the issue. We do not have a problem if the company wants to downsize its workforce but the laws should be strictly followed,” he said.

Mr Mukanga said that he would personally follow up the matter and would be in a position to give an informed response after three days.

He wondered why only Zambian managers and not expatriates were affected by the reported downsizing at KCM and who would occupy their positions.

Last week, KCM fired 11 Zambian senior managers in full time and pensionable employment.

  1. I spke too soon. Mushota, the other day i was praising your posts since returning from Zambia but it would appear i was wrong. Your friends have lost jobs and for some that may be the only means of livelihood for their families and all you can commment is how much you get. These opportunities are God given, so do not boast

    • Don’t be fooled by the picture. she’s a fraud who didn’t go anywhere near Zambia. She’s worse than ’90 days’…

  2. check also at Avantech plant & logistics Director mr carlo fire employees 4 small issue , language he uses is bad and no explanation.

  3. dont cry foul. why do Zambians clinch to been employed instead of forming their own enterprises? this culture of going to school so that you work for a company should end. people should learn to form their own companies so that they flourish like some of us. too educated to work for some of these Indian companies like KCM

    • You are right wemwana wamu Bemba, that’s BEMBA power speaking. I also subscribe to the same school of thought. We are better of working on our own as entrepreneurs, though the starting maybe tough but the end results are very rewarding!! Am in formal employment but also own and running my company that’s my exist plan. Zambian people lets wake up!!! we have what it takes to run our own companies. It gives so much peace.

  4. I wish to point out that some of the fired senior kcm employees had/have companies which they were giving contracts too,at the expense of eligible contractors. How is it fair for you as the head of department to award contracts to your companies run by relatives or shadow figures. That’s why you should declare interest.
The government knows about these issues as they have been informed of the level of unfairness in awarding contracts in the mines, even people like Wylbur Simusa are now getting contracts in the mines, when previously they never used to get, so who is to blame.

    • please leave our dear Hon Minister alone you are very corrupt no wonder YIU want to shot at honest and God fearing people .This country needs people who are not thieves and corrupt.I thank you HE MC Sata for appointing good men and productive people like Professor Chilwa Mulubwa.Benard Chiwala Hon Simusa ….may the Lord bless our country

    • Indians are worse on this, all big contracts are given to indian sido companies even for goods that can be supplied locally

  5. This issue has been long overdue, the senior managers abused their positions to influence unscrupulous dealings within KCM, they shud count their blessings that ACC or even DEC has not been brought in to investigate them. Govt should dig deep about the culture of awarding contracts and payments. I humbly end here for now

  6. Expect more Indians to flood into Zambia i know how KCM behaves they have alot of indians who do jobs even as small as driving a folklift Government should intervene right now.

  7. They are all Bembas so Sata should feel obliged to shed tears for them by deploying them under the family tree.

    • Iwe Mbuya spare us p-l-e-a-s-e. I know you have every right to be on the Big man!! but consider his current situation.

  8. Senior managers have been involved in unscrupulous deals with pipo like lwanga s. giving him contracts that are worth more than KR $1 M THEN THEY GET 10% COMMISSION. Fire them

  9. So thats when you have known? Thousands lost jobs like that at Zamtel. Technicians, commercial people who included managers lost their jobs in that manner and they still are losing it. Is it because its KCM? Zamtel workers have even been on TV complaining about this but you have done nothing. Wait, so they have already organized Senior Managers from India and SA.

  10. I can’t see any productivity sense in firing five managers who get far less for harder work but retaining an Indian expertriate who works less and depends on Local Managers to do work but earns many times more than many local managers combined.

  11. BWANA MINISTER,HIS HAS STARTED WITH YOUR GOVERMENT WHERE PEOPLE ARE FIRED WITHOUT REASONA BUT WE JUST HEAR ON NATIONAL INTEREST.

SO WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THESE WORKERS ONLY.THEY HAVE BEEN RETIRED ON NATIONAL INTEREST,NOTHING TO ASK FUTHER.
IS THE PREDENCE THE PF HAS SET IN THE COUNTY.
YOU MUST BE THE LAST PERSON TO COMPLAIN SIR.

  12. The law allows for someone to be terminated without giving reasons
As long as the notice clause in the contract is followed.seek forlegal advice before you ysp

  13. In the Smelter they have put an Indian who as just loffing as Manager to save him at the expense of a Zambian

  14. simusaa we are waiting for good roads, why should you bring that scrap contractor who has packed the equipment near your house, without doing the works.shame on you.

  15. The minister is talking about following up the issue of fired manager, thats not all there is in this country. The disparity in salaries of so called mine experts who come to learn from zambians is another issue GRZ has failed to address.
Did you know that in about a year’s time, Lumwana will close because they claim to be making loses? What is GRZ going to do to safeguard the welfare of its people? They claim to have written off 3.8B usD? Protecting the people is GRZ’s absolute responsibility. There is a very large community that would be affected negatively. Please, Ba Shamenda and Mukanga, quickly invetigate this and act. You are all very capable leaders. A lesson, GRZ should must have shares in all these and be partner in order to have a say when need arises and not spectate only.
