THE Zambia Congress of Trade unions (ZCTU) has said it is immoral for UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to utter disparaging remarks against President Michael Sata because this amounts to insulting Zambians who voted for Mr Sata.
ZCTU Secretary-General Roy Mwaba said opposition leaders should accept that Mr Sata was the republican President and that he deserved respect from all Zambians including opposition leaders.
Mr Mwaba said the union would continue condemning such behavior among opposition leaders as it was detrimental to the growth of democracy in Zambia.
He said the office of President should be respected regardless of who occupied it adding that Mr Hichilema should tone down in the language used in addressing political problems.
“What are the outsiders going to think of us when they hear such things? I know we are going to be called names for making such a stance but we will be consistent on this one and we don’t mind because this is something we believe to be true. I wonder why people are so silent and haven’t come out strongly to condemn HH on his recent outbursts against Mr Sata,” Mr Mwaba said.
He said the President was public property and not just for the Patriotic Front and therefore should be treated as such.
He said the opposition should take responsibility and behave like they were aspiring to form government.
The congress was also disappointed by the level of political violence that had taken root in the country and called for dialogue between the Government and opposition to ensure disputes were resolved.
He said the Government must institute measures that would bring the trend to a complete stop and urged all well meaning Zambians to take a stand against political violence as the vice was eating away the political fibre and discouraging people from participating in politics.
“It is a pity that our country has reached a level where political cadres in our key political parties have come to believe that they can only triumph through violence,” Mr Mwaba said.
Mr Mwaba said political parties must inculcate a sense of responsibility and tolerance among their cadres so that they were made to understand that the effectiveness of a political party was not seen through how violent they were.

His words were uttered after learning that Sata has instructed his police to arrest him before establishing facts for his arrest. Mwaba can proudly buy luxurious food at the expense of membership fees siphoned from Unionised workers affiliated to ZCTU. These ZCTU officers are the guys who dine at State House when workers are wallowing in poverty. ZCTU Officers will soon get the wrath of the workers. Events occurring in South cannot be ignored. Knowing PF regime, a Maracana Masacre is likely to be repeated in Zambia.

I have always wondered why people keep on claiming that ”Sata lied to us” when they never supported or voted for PF! You should be complaining to your leaders in the opposition parties who lied that they will win the elections and give you jobs. If you voted for other parties, you should not complain because that’s what you believe in and rest of Zambians disagreed with you. Presidency is an institution and it should be respected, if they don’t respect it why are they going to all the trouble of instigating violence and killings?
