Former Mayor to be transferred to Livingstone to face murder charge of PF cadre

Share

Southern Province Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga has said Livingstone Mayor Aggrey Njekwa and a resident, Henry Lungu, who were recently arrested in the Tourist Capital and taken to Lusaka’s Woodlands Police Station for questioning in relation to the murder of Patriotic Front (PF) cadre Harrison Chanda, are expected in Livingstone today.

Ms Katanga said Mr Njekwa and Mr Lungu were expected back in Livingstone by today.

She said the police had completed arresting suspects linked to the murder of Mr Chanda and so far some people had already been released.

“Mr Njekwa and Mr Lungu are still in Lusaka and they would be brought here in Livingstone by today or tomorrow (Monday), Ms Katanga said.

Some police sources have said that Mr Lungu was a prime suspect in Mr Chanda’s murder and he was allegedly found with a murder weapon when police officers stormed his house in Livingstone on Thursday.

United Party for National Development (UPND) Kalomo Member of Parliament Request Muntanga and party’s special adviser to Hakainde Hichilema Douglas Siakalima are among seven members who were released at the weekend after a screening process.

UPND cadre William Banda was also released on police bond at the weekend after he was re-arrested on Friday.

Several UPND supporters, including Mazabuka MP Gary Nkombo, appeared in Livingstone Magistrates Court in connection to various charges linked to the murder of Mr Chanda.

    • That Charity Katanga should resign, I really feel pit on young woman. Get a job as a teacher, nurse or just NGO stuff. Leave that dirty job for some older men. Even if Sata’s intentions of empowering women can by supported but not in such commissioner positions. ZP is over corrupt, and Zambian society under PF has become as brutal as Mogadishu.

    • I pray to differ with Nostradamus 1.1 above. The Police Commissioner for SP is my neighbour and we go to the same church. Being woman of slim and short stature should not deny the enormous skills of this married and professional Police Officer. She is a devout Catholic christian, learned lawyer and Drafter. What more do you expect, except that what she is doing no else can do it better in her position as of now. Her case is not of women empowerment rather that she is qualified and experienced enough to merit her position. She has been a career policewoman for more than seveteen years I believe and deserves support than scorn and envy.

    • @ innocent chimfutumba
you tell your neighbour that her future is as far as she can see her husband ****,come 2016 all the misery she has poured on the ordinary citizenry will come back to haunt her.misery must be the bottomline in this woman’s life.and any private institution that will opt her in will be considered as enermy of the state. So litsen coolie start registering her antics so that when her time to cry dawns you dont cry wolf

    • I have a serious question. Why is it that Obvious Mwalitetata is too close to two murders within the same months and in both Murders he is quick to pin the Murder on UPND. First it was his servant who it was later found died from a hit and run situation. Could this whole Saga be something that Mwaliteta created. Remember coloreds are some of the most ruthless people when it comes to killing. UPND private investigators should put this guy under a miccroscope. He is the Mark Furman of the OJ trial.

    • charity katanga, solomon jere and libongani must just commit suicide the day they hear sata has lost power……………………………..

  1. am I the only one who finds the behavior of Zambia Police absolutely embarrassing? ‘ati to be questioned in relation of the murder of PF cadre Harrison Chanda’ -dear public servants do not involve urselves too much in partisan politics..do ur job but do not be ´biased-bane political parties are here today and gone tomorrow…eg UNIP and MMD!..be professional-stick to ur code of ethics noti aya ma rubbish yamene tiona…anyway that’s my opinion-but as a fellow public servant i am embarrassed for ZP

    • Yo opinion is wraped and does not make any sense. There is nothing partisan in arresting people suspected of involvement of murder.Someone must be punished for the death of chanda.Katanga is doing her job and doing it correctly! You UPND thugs think you are above the law and should just be left alone while u kill people.Your bitterness, frustrations and envy have choked you so much that you have lost direction completely.Do you think the police should just fold their arms when a person is killed by UPND thugs?Grow up man,get a life or go and drown yourself in lake kariba!!

    • ‘What a life’ mutekanye sana I don’t know why u want to assume that I am UPND -but anyway that is irrelevant!fact is Zambia police have not behaved in the most professional manner -they have been biased..and that is a fact!why for instance , were they quick to make assumptions and arrest and UPND officials while investigations were still ongoing-they shud have picked up the PF cadres who were in the vicinity of the crime. My advice to u is be a little more mature and learn to articulate urself in a better manner-perhaps in Zambia under the current regime ur behaviour and insults will get u far..but in a global arena- character and intellect is what opens doors for u.So u need to check that-but actually i dont care- I am a child of God -so for ur wishes i say ‘back to sender’

  2. HOW POSSIBLE IS IT THAT NINE PEOPLE CAN HOLD ONE MACHETE AND KILL A PERSON,ITS ONLY IN ZAMBIA WHERE SUCH TAKES PLACE! EVEN IN A COMPLICATED MURDER CASE OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN PARALYMPIC WE COULD HEAR LEGAL TECHNICALITIES THAT MADE SENSE NOT THIS KATANGA OF A LAWYER WHO HAS EXIHIBITED SERIOUS LACK OF ETHICS IT DOES NOT NEED A LAWYER TO READ THROUGH HER UNETHICAL RHETORICS……

  3. sue the violators of human rights in Zambia..is it that UPND is the only party with members that are law breakers..why don’t you exhume the skinny body of Chanda and do some autopsy..

  4. So, who really murdered that guy – all the arrested, Nkombo alone or Njekwa, or Lungu – since Obvious said one person jumped onto a truck and struck Chanda? I really wonder how the police are going to zero in on that killer in this case. For now, it’s CNP approach as usual!

    • If late PF Chanda was pushed out of a moving track that led to his death, how on earth all UPND are being arrested? Surely, Zambian police have some basic training on gathering evidence. Legal litigations will follow after this incidence. Individual police officers will stand in the dock to answer what they knew in arresting individuals who were released without any charges.

  5. But how did UPND cadres kill this guy who is said to have been on top of a truck loaded with PF cadres……….isn’t it just a sign that he was probably killed by his own comrades within the truck or maybe felt and died during the stampede……would PF cadres honestly leave UPND cadres jump on that truck and kill that chap

  6. You won’t gain anything from killing each other.By the way,can someone please give me a list of 20 most educated persons from each party.Only professors and doctors need to be mentioned.

  7. I WILL INSERT MY BIG THING INTO HER TINY LITTLE HOLE AND SHE GONNA SCREAM MY NAME ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!

  8. I CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHY WILLIAM BANDA IS STILL RUNNING LOOSE IN SOCIETY AND NOT BEING JAILED. IT IS THIS JUSTICE DELAYED WHICH DENIES PEOPLE JUSTICE. JUST THINK OF HOW JUSTICE WAS STUPIDLY DELAYED BY MWANAWASA ON CHILUBA TO THE POINT OF CHILUBA GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER.

    • Don’t be bitter my friend. Be fair minded. I wouldn’t expect you to be locked up just because I may not like you.

    • AND UPND IS CAPITALIZING ON THIS LOOP HOLE TO COMMIT MURDER. YOU CAN NOT BE CLEVER ALL THE TIME. ONE DAY…JUST ONE DAY. YOU WILL BE CAUGHT.

  9. Nostradamus I think you need your brain checked for such nonsense statement. What do you think of women? Do you even have a mother? if you do you should respect women and stop issuing careless statements.

  10. LT, Your headline is misleading, why do you say former mayor before his case is even brought before the courts of law? He has not been convicted yet and is therefore still mayor of Livingstone.

Now, this case is rather unusual, there were two sides involved in the skirmishes yet all the arrested are from UPND only and the PF are ‘clean’ despite the fact that they provoked the ugly situation and none of them was arrested. Fair play and justice without interference from any quarters must be seen to be applied.
Katanga must not be too zealous but apply the law appropriately.

    • Even in football the offender if unlucky gets only a yellow card but the offended gets a red card if he over reacts and kicks the one who tackled him/her. Simple logic UPND should have restrained themselves. Otherwise someone is going in for life if they are lucky otherwise a death sentence awaits the culprits of CHANDA’S death.

  11. The Zambia police are the most useless police on earth! Surely, can’t they study the crime scene and come up with a murder suspect/s without having to arrest half of Sata’s political opponents? They should try and act professionally.

  12. My only question at this point is, was the suspect found with A murder weapon or THE murder weapon? These two are different statements with two different implications.

  13. Blood on their hands!! go and repent but the law must take it’s course dont remove the death penalty from the constitution pliz.

  14. Bravo Charity Katanga. There’s a reason why the President took you to Livingstone to sought out misbehaving UPND Cadres like the way you did in Lusaka. You have a duty and do not be afraid leave a good legacy MAMA. Keep up the good works.

  15. Investigations is the process applied to establish the fact (s). This therefore means that any one suspected to be connected to a crime committed can be picked to assist with investigations wether one is involved or not. The process reveal people who are innocent and guilty as evidenced by the release of those who were not found wanting in this case. The truth of the matter is if one is innocent it means he or she is innocent.Life is precious which every human being should cherish regardless of which grouping one belongs to. Who ever is behind the killing of the late Mr. Chanda should be brought to book and allow the law to take its cause. It is high time we learned to respect every human being who is created in the image of God.

  16. the most interesting thing about this blog is the level of reasoning of most bloggers. they seem to have been brain washed by political affiliation. insults can never and will never do. for a change, reason using those God free given brains. and respect the women of this world for the sake of them being the creation of GOD. keep complaining whilst those who can seize the opportunity make headways in their lives. frustrations has never done

  17. Iam learning the way of the police..they arrest you first and then do the investigations not the other way round.

  18. Thanx Lusaka Times for your balanced presentation of issues! I was reading the same story on ZWD and it is twisted beyond measure and you could tell that the idiets have very strange motives against the current government of St Micheal!
Its very interesting to see how they have been squeezed by the strong hand of the law and believe you me, the chaps are sweating! Viva peace in Zambia, abash medieval politics practiced by baby politicians! Long live St Micheal!

  19. @ Citizen
If i strongly suspect that you have committed a cognizable offence, i will arrest you and then consolidate my case by interviewing any competent or compalable witness! Minwhile, you will be knashing your a.s.s in cells!

  20. Why isn’t the police arresting Mwaliteta; on TV, he said he witnessed the killing but I dint hear him say that he saw Garry; why is he still being held in cells?

  21. Mwaliteta is an alarmist. he gives false stories and two deaths in Livingstone have followed him.

    He is a Satanist.

  22. Please follow Mwaliteta wit immediate effect.

He is linked to two killings so far. Any arrest from the first killing? PF on donchi as usual
