Government has terminated a contract awarded to Mwasika contractors of Lusaka to construct Mwense district hospital.
The construction of Mwense district hospital which started in 2010 has been delayed and running behind completion time.
Education Deputy Minister David Mabumba said the contract has since been given to Hua Jiag a Chinese construction company.
Mr Mabumba who is also Mwense Central area Member Parliament said this in Mwense yesterday when he addressed scores of Mwense residents during the international women’s day.
The Minister said government was in a hurry to deliver development to the people therefore could not afford seeing projects which are supposed to benefit the people lug behind.
Mr Mabumba said he is sure that Hua Jiag will work according to the expectation of government and complete the project on time.
Mwasika contractors were award two contracts by the previous government to construct Milenge and Mwense district hospitals but have failed to deliver.
Efforts to get a comment from Mwasika contractors of Lusaka proved futile by press time.

Let’s b realistic local contractors are a let down.if Chinese can do a beta job let them get most of the building contracts.let our local companies show seriousness.i don’t understand the wisdom in yo contribution.
Why should the Chinese contractors under-perform when they have support from their government. GRZ is rarely timely when it comes to paying for completed jobs and at times requires local companies to fund the projects. Don’t give a dog a bad name and hang it.
A contract awarded in 2010 and they are still struggling to complete even one of the two projects? Come on now!
Let us give contracts to companies that have the capacity to deliver. Local companies that want to get into the construction business start by engaging in sub-contracts and build up their capacities before taking on major projects on their own. In fact our local Contractors can learn a lot from these experienced Chines contractors by partnering with them.
Delays, especially in construction, can be very costly to both the company and govt. And Zambia does not have a trillion dollar budget to tolerate waste and incompetence.

No Qualifications just stealing money.Example was Kapoko supplying Baby kits to UTH,the guy was Human Resources manager,what does he know about UTH baby kits.learn to give contracts to people who deserve it not because uzadyamo.
So, Nkalanda, what is your point? That Mwasika should be given more time when other contractors with track records have delivered within contractual commitment? Business and delivery is now global – you snooze you lose.
Local contractors have to compete with the Chinese contractors, if they are to be awarded contracts. If they can not do a good job , then l don’t see the reason of giving them contracts. Just because your brother is in government, it doesn’t mean you get everything on a silver plate. You have to earn it. of course we have to promote our locals. But if they fail to work hard then Zambians deserve better.

Good move by government. A hospital is a serious institution that should not be politised. Let give the job to someone who is able to deliver than gumble with people’s lives.

The fact of the matter is that Zambian construction companies are generally a let down. Immediately they get a ka advance payment, instead of procuring construction materials, u will see a proliferation of 4 X 4 BMW X5s and Volvos among directors, their wives and concubines. U will also notice frequent visits to Travel agencies to purchase return tickets to Dubai and London for shopping sprees. I don’t blame government for losing confidence in Zambian construction firms.

Just do work properly you will be respected be serious with your work culture and do that work expecting to be given more in future the problem with some zambian contractors they don’t project for more and so do shoddy jobs which don’t attract further contracts. BOTSWANA IS CRYING TODAY BECAUSE OF THESE CHINESE CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES.THE RECENTLY COMPLETED COAL POWER STATIONS WORTH BILLIONS OF PULA HAVE BROKEN DOWN.NOW THERE IS A SERIOUS POWER SHORTAGES IN THE COUNTRY.ANOTHER CHINESE COMPANY BUILT A DOUBLE STOREY SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL WITHOUT BRICK FORCE.THE NEWLY BUILT AIRPORT ROOF WAS BROWN OFF BY A MINOR STORM.ZAMBIAN GOVT. MUST LEARN FROM THE GOVERNMENT IN BOTSWANA.

The PF govt should avoid doing the same thing of giving unqualified cadres professional jobs, Govt should however find ways of aiding local contructors to take over from these well funded china companies.otherwise good move govt.

I’m withe the minister on this one. A number of these so called local contractors are full of sh.it. this is a lesson to you locals. Down payment is not for you to buy yourselves and girlfriends/concubines flashy stuff.Its meant to kick start projects. Learn now or you will be crying foul all the time.
We lack good administrators in Zambia. I mean, even the most senior administrators suffer from stupidity of the highest order…they suffer from complexes,if there was a way I’m sure they’d give the administration to their muzungus too.
