The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) says it is confident of scooping all the five forth-coming parliamentary by-elections .

UPND Secretary General Winston Chibwe said the party is geared for the polls in five constituencies in Chipata Central, Feira, Kafulafuta,Mkushi Central and Solwezi East.Mr. Chibwe said UPND has an upper hand over the MMD and the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) in the forth-coming by-elections.

Mr. Chibwe predicted that the UPND his will amass more votes compared to the PF because the people in these areas have now decided to support the Hakainde
Hichilema and the entire UPND because of good policies enshrined in the party manifesto.

“This time around the ruling PF will tumble in rural areas because we have convinced the people to vote for our party if real change is to be seen,” Mr. Chibwe said

He claimed that UPND has got good policies on agriculture such as the Fertilizer Input and Support Programme which had enhanced agriculture in the rural areas. He said people in the five areas would not be easily cheated by government because they have faith in Mr. Hichilema’s leadership style of governance which is anchored on more development than mere politicking.

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Spokesperson Cris Akufuna recently announced that the Feira constituency by-election in Lusaka province will be held on June 20, 2013 following the resignation of MMD member of parliament Patrick Ngoma who joined the ruling PF.

Mr Akufuna also said 11 local government elections will take place in different wards on the same date following deaths and resignations of councillors.

The ECZ has also set July 25, 2013 as the date for the four pending by-elections to be held in Chipata Central, Mkushi, Kafulafuta and Solwezi East.
The Mkushi , Kafulafuta and Solwezi East parliamentary seats fell vacant following the resignations of Members of Parliament from the MMD to join the ruling PF while the Chipata Central seat by-election follows the nullification of election results by the Supreme court.

Meanwhile, the opposition Zambia Empowerment for Development (ZED) has indicated that it will not field candidates in the five constituencies because of lack of resources.

ZED president Fred Mtesa said in a separate interview that his party would instead conduct a series of investigations in the places where polls would be held to determine its popularity instead of wasting people’s time.Mr. Mtesa claimed that the Electoral Commission of Zambia cannot be trusted with holding
elections as evidenced in the past where the opposition always cried foul.

  1. Keep on dreaming bane.I bet the subsidy thing has given you some pseudo-confidence.You will be surprised that the voting pattern hasn`t changed by an inch.

  2. Implore ECZ to be transparent otherwise you are doomed. The thief’s will work day and night to ensure the steal your votes. All the best… we r tired of BUFI

  3. We have been told so many times that UPND has an upper hand in many by elections but then the results do not lie!! dream on

    • They will only have an upper hand the day those flying pigs from the moon stop coming by to have a cup of coffee and biscuits.

  4. No doubt UPND will scoop all the five seats because the Veil of donchi kubeba has been speareds and everything in it bought to light Viva Viva HH the only hope

    • BABA THOSE BY ELECTIONS ARE NOT TAKING PLACE IN LUKULU. THE PEOPLE IN THOSE PLACES ARE A BIT MORE ENLIGHTENED THAN THEIR COUNTERPARTS IN LUKULU. SO UPND IS VERY UNLIKELY TO WIN ANY OF THOSE SEATS. ESPECIALLY THAT THEIR PACT PARTNER MMD WILL ALSO FIELD ITS OWN (BUT LOSING) CANDIDATES. AND BY JULY 25 TH, THE SHORT-LIVED EXCITEMENT OVER SUBSIDIES WILL HAVE DIED DOWN. SO UPND WILL HAVE NOTHING TO CLING ON.

    • That is practically impossible for UPND to win all the five seats. Just to be fair if luck will scoop one seat only or nothing.
Dont think that the current situation on subsidy removal will change the outcome. It is high time we stop misleading people and stop believing in spoon fade because time has come to sacrifice. Even in Europe and else where some countries are even in a worse situation than us but are sacrifising to save their countries. Things will never be the same always. And in this regard any government could have taken the same stance as it has a purpose with the view to make things better. If it fails other alternatives have to be sought of and not opposing before seeing the end results. Opposing is just frustrating the well intended efforts.

  5. The pathetic foools should be caged this time around, UKwa has lost direction & his mental state very questionable. HH & Upnd is the way forward for a better Zambia for all Zambians.

    • UPND lacks forecast other than being in a deep slamber. It will never govern this country come what may. In first place the Party is just consolidating its strength in one province and this does not represent Zambia as a whole. Even if UPND is given all the seats free in the southern province, that alone cannot take Hichilema any where near State House.
If he were wise enough that is, instead of yaping repeatedly baseless speeches for the sake of being heard on the media he could have cast his net wide enough to other provinces.
It took PF good solid years to reorganise themselves at all levels inspite all frusrtations and yet UPND was already in existance but directionless. HH pride and his party will go no where. Let HH use some wisdom more often and not intelligence alone.

  6. Iwe Chibwe: leka kusabaila! And to make matters worse you are in the wrong party, or could you, perhaps, be a hybrid?

  7. BA UPND. YOU HAVENT STOPPED DREAMING. YOU CANNOT HOPE TO WIN SIMPLY BECAUSE OF SUBSIDIES. YES THE ZAMBIANS MAY HAVE TO SUFFER HARDSHIPS. THE GREATEST QUESTION IS: ARE YOU THE ALTERNATIVE TO PF? THE ANSWER IS A BIG NO. EVEN IF PEOPLE GET DISGRUNTLED WITH PF, THEY WILL CHOOSE ANOTHER PARTY. BUT NOT UPND. YOU SEEM TO BE VERY HAPPY WITH THE FORTH COMING BY ELECTIONS AND YET YOU CONDEMN THEM PRETENDING THAT THEY ARE EXPENSIVE. ARE YOU NOT CONTRIBUTING TO THE COST AND APROVING THESE BY ELECTIONS BY TAKING PART WITH EVERY EXCITEMENT?

    • Ba Chisenga, what is your point? & if you think Upnd is not an alternative to Pf, please speak only for yourself otherwise, some of us are behind Upnd which has progressive policies as compared even to Pf. I will vote for Upnd & HH come 2016 or whenever they will be a general election & tell your pathetic f6666ls to stop rigging election. Come 2016 we need a normal person for president not a comedian chief Ukwa.

  8. I just urge the Opposition Parties to be careful with the Power Failure(PF) rigging.Mind you all the by-elections the PamaFi(PF) have claimed to win have been rigged done thru hook and crook, thru deceit/lies and bribery-Livingstone,Chongwe,Mufumbwe.Kapiri Mposhi etc.The Poor Finishers(PF) have lost there popularity too fast within 2 years.One-Term Champions, just like the Chipolopolo.

  9. @Kayombo. It stands to reason. Nobody in their right senses would expect you to vote for a party other than UPND!

  10. I am worried about MMD – these days they are so quiet – even the diehard bowman is mute – it’s like UPND has completely swallowed them – N Mumba please say something and give direction to the once mighty and vibrant party

  11. Bwalya, MMD have suddenly found themselves on zero gravity. They lack proper leadership which cannot persevere extreme hardships. The period between the last elections and now has been particularly hard for them. Compare this to UPND which has continued to wheather storms and still remain standing. MMD’s sails really seem to have been punctured. Add to the woes the fact that they have admitted to have no money, then you have a party fast approaching political extinction.
