Zambians for Empowerment and Development (ZED) President Fredrick Mutesa has added his voice on the need for first republican president Kenneth Kaunda to sustain a role that is above partisan politics.
The first republican president has come under heavy criticism over his alleged disparaging statement against the opposition during the commemoration of the country’s 49th independence anniversary in Kitwe last week.
Dr. Mutesa says much as Dr. Kaunda deserves all the respect from all Zambians for being the founding father of the nation, it is disappointing that he would portray a partisan line by being inclined to President Michael Sata and the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).
Dr. Mutesa says the country’s constitution prohibits a former Head of State from engaging in active politics as Dr. Kaunda is doing.
He says by issuing disparaging remarks against the opposition Dr. Kaunda is in essence speaking against the aspirations and wishes of the people in the country who fought and struggled to have the reintroduction of multiparty democracy.
Dr. Mutesa has told QFM in an interview that he is at pain to speak negatively against Dr. Kaunda urging him to be above partisan politics.
Dr Mutesa was at pains to speak negatively against Kaunda?? Does this Mutesa guy know Kaunda? Bwana, were you in Zambia when Kaunda was ruling? Kaunda was an evil man. He would put in prison anyone who opposed his rule. He presided over the most brutal regime! Under Kaunda we all lived in fear.

no one is saying that as president, KK was a saint but if you look at a broader picture, KK did a lot for the country too than any other president we have had so far.
Feel free Mr Mutesa, many are wise to this guy’s misrule during his tenure as president anyway. We were there.
Folks try to get your facts rights first before you over glorify KK. Yes KK participated in the struggle for independence just like Nkumbula, Kapwepwe, Chama chakomboka, Mudenda, mundia, mama chikamoneka and many others. But the truth is KK joined at the time the struggle was far advanced and being championed by Nkumbula. Then the British decided to choose KK who they thought would be compromising to the plight the British settlers in Zambia, and ditched Nkumbula because he dictated the terms which disadvantaged the settlers. If you look at the first constitution which was handed over to Zambia as the frame to start with, it clearly states that the President of Zambia shall be Kaunda. KK then used that to go back to one party state.
The same criteria was used in Zim in favour of BOB
The fact that Kaunda was one of the cohort that liberated Zambia should be allowed to over shadow the atrocities he committed during his time in power. I doubt very much if what he later became was what the majority Zambians signed up when they fought for independence. The man became drunk with power to the existent that he disregarded all the rights and freedoms of the poor Zambians.
KK should keep quiet if he has nothing to say otherwise he will just the open wounds sustained during his regime when they were just about to heal. Some of us lost our loved ones under the monstrous dictatorial regime of Kaunda. He should not rekindle those horrible memories of his dogmatism. Otherwise!
Former dictator Kaunda should indeed be above partisan politics. During his time as country we went through a lot of suffering as a result of his misrule. During the Mwanawasa government the man spoke so much against that galant president who achieved so much for our country and yet he is not able to speak about poor governance that we are experiencing. Appointments are coming from one region or relatives of those that are in power. Late Chiluba correctly observed that the current president should not have voted into that office and, he is vindicated! Zambia today is being downgraded in every portfolio due to the PF. Mr. Chikwanda was with KK when the run down the economy of Zambia and here we go yet again. Zambia wake up!!
Kaunda was responsible for Chama Chakomboka’s unstable mental state. He unleashed his dogs to attack Chakomboka and incarcerated him for along period for his divergent political views. KK was also responsible for the disappearance of Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe. He also tried hard to get rid of Harry Nkumbula but eventually he managed by denying the old man permission to travel to SA for medical treatment.
During Kaunda era, KK had shushus every where, even in popular bars and taverns you would be lucky to dare criticise Kaunda and live to see another day. The man was evil with his crocodile tears.
I find it profoundly disturbing to note that the PF and Sata are embracing the evil man to boost their popularity. To me ,this is a clear sign of the PF hanging themselves.

A pile of rubbish my friends, political maturity has taken its phases era after era, in those times liberation parties were inclined to one party state, due mostly to ignorance of political systems by the population, of course we were coming from suppression from our colonial powers. KK made sure you had the education you deserved and hence your maturity in political systems, KK built the belief that you can be empowered and ran your own affairs, nationalization and many other things that amount to you be called independent. Then your cousins came in the form of MMD! the rest is blank history with no references, and for the past two years that hope has been rekindled, and if a simple me can feel that, what’s wrong with the old man putting praise were its due. Be realistic.
Ba LT the title of this article needed some corrections as follows: “at pains” not “at pain” and put a “not” between “to” and “speak.”
Therefore, the title should have read as: “Am at pains to not speak negatively against KK, …” The meaning would be what you were trying to say i.e. Am trying very hard not to say anything negative about KK, but circumstances demand that I do so.

Dr.Mutesa whatever you call yourself and your small party, as an intellectual and son of former renowed diplomat you should not talk about Super Ken in such manner. He was not a saint as leader, but quite certainly is now a revered liberator who was hurt like myself for HH to propose not celebrate the independence KK and colleagues as well as all Zambians suffered for. Unless you were dozing and born biased KK remarked about his heartfelt feelings for someone to tell Zambians that our independence is null and void in the same country one wishes to rule some day, God willing! It is an abomination to criticize the feeling KK expressed about trashing the independence Zambians struggled for. I suggest president Mutesa send a sober letter of apology to KK if blessings are to come upon you.

Why is it so difficult for this man, KK to keep out of politics? Why can’t he emulate the likes of Nujoma, Mandela, Masire, Mbeki who retired and live their lives honorably as ex-heads of state? He has an attractive pension that guarantees he won’t starve for the rest of his life. He is approaching a hundred years of age, isn’t this the time to take it very easy and completely refrain from all political activities? He may have a lot of fans who see nothing wrong with his evil and brutal past but to some of us he represents a loathesome living nightware that we would appreciate if he kept himself out of the limelight. His continouous presence in the media is like adding salt to our wounds.

KK was really an evil man and I really hope he has repented though he has not asked for forgiveness from those he personally hurt. I remember back in the days late 1980s we were just in primary school and a friend wrote on the bus stop that KK chiqala, within minutes his parents were apprehended by the police and put in custody for the whole day!
