Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa has complained that the sacking of the more than 200 nurses at University Teaching Hospital and other major hospitals in the country has affected operations at local health facilities.

Sampa said the complaints that operations at Chingwere Clinic had been affected were as a result of understaffing which the Ministry of Community Development was well aware of but had not yet addressed.

He explained that as far as he was concerned, his office had already written to the ministry to request for more nurses to the facility because of the huge catchment area that the clinic is responsible for.

“As the area MP, there is very little I can do about it. My hands are tied and I cannot do much,” Sampa said.

He explained that his office had already written to the Ministry of Community Development for consideration of posting more nurses to the clinic.

He explained that the recent strike action at UTH had affected operations at most health centres as the nurses did not attend to their duties adequately, and that the situation was beyond his control.

“What I can do as MP I manage. We recently managed to paint the clinic with help from the Chinese Ambassador who donated K30,000 and we recently managed to fumigate the whole clinic after increased complaints of cockroaches, including at George Clinic among others. This I can do,” Sampa said.

He was responding to increased public complaints about the continued staffing problems at the clinic where patients were forced to spend long hours in queues without any medical attention.

Some Matero residents complained that patients were forced to go back home without being attended to after waiting on long queues with only one medical officer and one nurse on duty.

Martha Kapambwe of SOS Lusaka North complained that she was at the clinic for the second day on Sunday because her child could not be seen the previous day.

    • Those nurses were old , slow, carried excess fat, and couldn’t speak good English

Employ the graduates, with more energy.

      Good riddance.

      Thanks

    • He is just being truthful rather than play politics. I am sure that the people denying existence of problems do not go to government clinics for treatment.

    • @ yangu tata,There is no politics, this is Life and Death….If people can not forgive others people who insulted them for 10 days, Can you imagine Mandela who suffered for 27 years not 27 days………….Learn to forgive Ba President please. Now is the appropriete time after Madiba’s passing on.

  1. reinstate the fired nurses asap. this is just a humane thing to do. you don’t achieve anything by firing nurses. in future lets learn to dialogue.

    • Even if you are refusing to learn from Madiba’s spirit of forgivenessand kindness, humbly with the grace of the Lord, Your Excellency, forgive the fired nurses….This shall delete all the negatives that people have about you as to why you did not attend Mandela’s memorial ceremony….you are just a bad guy if you did not know that.

  2. So these nurses went on strike without plan B, in case you are fired? Anyway, let them come back but their position will be to weakened, they will never have the courage to ask for an increment, not even for a 2%. Going forward, no one should have their salary increased, whether presido, nurse or soldier so that the budget deficit is covered.

  3. The white man says he will replace them with graduants. This white does not think. He is not aware thats those are good as student nurses. Anyway if you want to know a person , look at his best friend. Someone with seven guns and one cresseda.

  4. medicine practice is a skill which you learn after practising for considerable amount of time. You can expect anything good from new graduates alone. Govt should rethink.

  5. medicine practice is a skill which you learn & perfect after practising for considerable amount of time. You cant expect anything good from new graduates alone. Govt should rethink.

  6. PF twalosha fyafula (we don’t want anymore funerals) our people are dying everyday and everywhere. Obama was right when he said there a lot of people who associate themselves with Madibas’ good heart of forgiveness and yet they fail to stand simple provocation from their own people such as these. PF am reminding you that these nurses you fired are family men and women, bread winners who might not have any other means of putting food on the table..where is your consciousness….I believe you have thought about it and it is now overdue for you to do what is best for these men and women..save these lives as you also save those connected to them.

  7. Madam 1st lady who worked at UTH for several yrs is the best person who can appeal to govt so that they can consider to reinstated the nurses.Bafweni abana benu mama.balilamutule tabakabwekeshepo nakabili.

  8. Proverbs 28:16,26
A ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor,
But he who hates covetousness will prolong his days.

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,
But whoever walks wisely will be delivered.

  9. yes you voted and now its time to reap were you sow…people were walking naked the time sata won,now i would honestly want to see what good those votes have done.Thank God am able to afford a private hospital. What miles is talking about is very true and on the ground right as we speak..and there actually some st*pid blogger asking if his joined the opposition.Thats absolutely mediocre thinking dont think everything is political here, try by all means to be realistic here.People are suffering and dying in these hospital..imagine even before some nurses were fired there was still a shortage now its really a mess out there. Thus dont just blog because your a cadder here.
