The Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) has appealed to mobile service subscribers who have not yet registered their SIM cards to do so now to avoid being de-registered.

ZICTA Director of Corporate Affairs Mofya Chisala said subscribers who want to wait till the last days of the registration exercise risk losing their numbers.

Mr. Chisala said subscribers who will decide to wait until the last three days before the deadline will risk losing their mobile phone numbers.

He said there were a number of procedures that needed to be taken when registering a SIM card.

He said these procedures take days hence those who want to do last ditch registration risk the possibility of their sim cards not being registered.

And Mr. Chisala said over 70 percent of mobile service subscribers on the subscriber base have so far registered their cards.

He said from the latest statistics, about 6.9 million subscribers out of the 10.2 million on the subscriber base have had their sim cards registered, representing a 70 percent capture.

Mr. Chisala said the response from subscribers since the extension of the exercise by a month has been very overwhelming.

He expressed optimism that ZICTA will be able to capture a desirable number of subscribers by the time the exercise comes to an end on January 31.

The sim card registration exercise, which was initially slated to end on December 31, 2013, will close on January 31, 2014.

  1. How many times one need to register a SIM? It is so frustrating for one to receive a warning about my card being threatened to be deregistered for not being registered but having registered more than three (3) times. This simply shows how incompetent and lack of seriousness from our ????????????????? of today.

  2. Now let the general be the only subscriber who isn’t registered in the country and see how it benefits him as the only unregistered user. Silly isn’t it?

  3. This is scaremongering I still don’t see ZICTA de-registering 3 million SIM cards its impossible and just a bluff, how do they think the networks will pay them. This is one of the most pointless exercises I have ever seen. I highly doubt that number of registered cards.

  4. ZICTA is it a good idea for Mobile Service Providers to Register Sim Cards Automatically without the consent of the owner? Like what happened to General Miyanda, exactly the same thing they did to my CARD. !!! Is that good? Concerned Citizen.

  5. 10 million SIM cards for a population of 13 million ???????in Africa people have three SIM cards some just to use to insult people.
