Alliance for Better Zambia president Father Frank Bwalya blows a whistle against the government’s refusal to release the Zambian draft constitution

The opposition Alliance for a Better Zambia (ABZ) has advised the leaders of congregations of Catholic nuns in Zambia to immediately put in place measures to protect their members from violent members of society and other social misfits.

The ABZ’s call follows the recent ‘barbaric behaviour of a named teacher at Roma Girls Secondary School in Lusaka who savagely beat up a Catholic nun who is head teacher of the same school.

ABZ Leader Father Frank Bwalya has told QFM News in a telephone interview that the violent behaviour of the teacher should be strongly condemned by all peace loving Zambians.

Father Bwalya says the barbaric behaviour has no place in the civilized society.

He has called for the immediate arrest of the teacher and justice on behalf of the innocent Catholic nun whose beating represents notorious gender based violence.

He adds that it is very shameful and disheartening for a school teacher who should teach pupils civilized ways of solving differences to resort to violence over an issue that could easily be settled through dialogue.

Father Bwalya says his party is very disappointed with the violent school teacher whose behaviour has potential to tarnish the image of the teaching fraternity in our country.

He has since advised the leadership of the Catholic nuns to ensure that they come up with measures that will see to it that nuns in the country are protected from any form of violence.

  1. I cud not believe my eyes to see a man drag and savagely beat up the nun believed to be her superior too. It is scaring one can be that aggressive in full view. Let him be arrested and apologise to the poor and innocent woman. Am embarrassed as a man. Learn to dialogue to resolve conflict. Shame upon the mad science teacher!

    • I wish to disagree with My Leader in ABZ on this one;
      1. If the man’s house was not locked by the so called nun, there wasn’t going to be violence at all.
      2. The NUN was so supposed to lead into dialogue, after knowing the circumstances of the science teacher.
      3. Exposing the Man’s family to the cold during this cold season should be looked into during the investigations.
      4. They are both learned; the nun and the man, so both displayed behaviors not befitting their education.
      5. The male teacher is human who has emotions like any other person, so his reaction MUST be understood and be forgiven, ‘for beating so much’ otherwise his actions are justifiable at law. Plea ‘Not Guilty’ in the box. Any straight thinking Judge WILL acquit that man of wrong doing.
      6. Look at issues…

  2. Violence anywhere is not the best way to resolve conflicts, especially in front of children who could easily be traumatized seeing their respectable headteacher getting battered. Let the law enforcement agencies do their job to protect the integrity of the school and the whole teaching profession.

  3. That man is a savage and am sure the wife is a victim of GBV. What a shame to have such man as your teacher, father and more worse your husband. He needs to be caged.

  4. As much as I condemn the act, lets us also educate these nuns to have a humane heart towards human beings. Quote me right here, I am not in support of what the teacher did, but that man was provoked beyond limits by a heartless nun. We all know how heartless some of these nuns are. In boarding schools they act like representatives of the devil himself when it comes to mistreating pupils. Some of these nuns are really heartless. The teacher should have just walked away, two wrongs don’t make a right. He should have escalated the problem to the nun’s supervisors. It is wrong to beat up anybody, let alone a defenseless woman. In bemba they say “amano yalubuli yesa chilya mwalwa”. Zambians when we sit down and quarrel every day, we are saying prayers to the devil.

  5. The issue is not just the assault of the nun. It’s about the wrong characters joining the educational sector as teachers. Some of these so-called teachers are not fit for that role. There’s need to weed them out of the sector. There was an incident at Nistcol, Chalimbana, where a principal was assaulted by a lecturer as he was seated at the table having his lunch in his home, some years ago!

  6. Let’s not just rush to blame the teacher. I don’t think the teacher just battered her from the blues. These nuns can be sometimes very irritating. I am sure she should have provoked him to his limits, he is just human.

    • @Fwebene, so in short you justify the violence. If the teacher was irritated then the right reaction is violence?? You are pathetic…

    • Even the Bible teaches us not to spare the rod bwana maikalange and namona so the teacher used it accordingly

  7. The Teacher should be, I submit, be arrested as a suspect for Assault Occasioning (causing) Actual Bodily Harm (AOABH) as proscribed and defined in the Section 248 of the Penal Code, Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The Police are very aware of the provisions of this section, which states that
‘Any person who commits an assault occasioning actual bodily harm is guilty of a misdemeanour & is liable to imprisonment for five years.’

And my indignation goes further in that the victim of this brute is a lady of honour who has forsaken the world to serve the Lord in chastity and poverty. Ba Police, don’t wait until an opposition party leader makes noise for you to do your job!

  8. The teacher shd be praised. Nuns are notorious. since they have support from frank then i know who to elect. Ifn this kwangala called Bwalya wins then there would be confusion in schools. all houses will be locked for no reason. Teachers dont vote for this lunatic. why locking the house you never built? next one shud be a priest called Bwalya himself. ka rematch plse.

  9. First and foremost, the author of the article does not give his/her readers enough information. We need background information as to what caused this barbaric act, this will enable us to comment from an informed point of view. But I can tell from some comments above that some people may have watched this incident on local TV news.

A question to Fr Bwalya, was this lady beaten by virtue of being a nun or headteacher? In my view, it’s not about protecting nuns, but these incidences are quite rife in most work places where some junior male employees tend to use violence on female superiors. A case in point is that ZRA savage, Siame who beat up his boss from HR department. We have also heard of reports where angry male patients have vented their anger on defenceless female nurses.

  10. How can his Party be concern about one isolated case on an individual, its not like catholic nuns across the country are being targeted. The law is very clear on this and I have confidence in the Police when it comes to such issues.
Father Bwalya there are other ways of seeking political capital and mileage from your catholic community.

  11. Father Bwalya, please may i also ask that priests stop sexually abusing our children. The Pope has more than once publicly apologised to the world for the evils of his men of the cloth.

  12. I’m sure the poor teacher must be regretting his barbaric actions. The best is to leave the place the moment you realise that someone wants to push you to extremes and you have such a volatile temper.

  13. Ask any ex-Roma girls they will attest to how harsh nuns can be. Coming to this incidence. The Teacher faulted on his rentals because he didn’t get his salary. to enable him settle a 1000 house rentals. Thereafter the head nun teacher locked out the house and insisted that the teacher pays first before reoccupying the house. meanwhile he renders services at the same school and was omitted on the pay role as a ghost worker. all this wired up the poor teacher and decided to go physical. I condenm both of them for lack of civility in pushing for rental money and physically settling the case. The head nun teacher should ve sought the balifs services while the teacher should gone to DEBs office to resolve the matter. Can the numerous teacher unions intervene

  14. Yes the behavior by the teacher is barbaric. no one should resort to such animal behavior especially one with a teaching spirit. But Ba Bwalya sure should we put measures to protect nuns? such things can happen to any member of the public. not long ago it was a nurse! will we need to reactively put up measures to protect whoever such unfortunate thing happen to? aren’t we going to devote all our resources protecting people?

  15. Are the nuns and endeangered group of people so that ‘Fr’ Frank Bwalya should call for their protection. What happened is an isolated incident and it should not put the nation in panic mood. Frank Bwalya is desparate for some political mileage, so he ends up using every opportunity, even inappropriate ones. I am not in any way condoning violence. Clearly the teacher shud not have acted that way and the nun also acted barbarically in locking out a man’s children in this cold. Is it because she does not have children of her own that she can be so cruel?

  16. The beating was not right and locking the house was equally not right at all considering the teacher teaches at the same school. That teacher shud not be arrested, that nun must forgive the teacher in the same way the Son forgave those who cruxified Him.
