POLICE in Livingstone yesterday arrested former city mayor Aggrey Njekwa of house number DNB 32 in Dambwa, for murder.

Mr Njekwa who is alleged to have assaulted his 83 year old neighbor Albert Mulonda two weeks ago and later died last week after being hospitalized, handed himself to the Livingstone central police after police launched a manhunt for him.

Livingstone District Police Officer Commanding, Joseph Chitambo confirmed the arrest of Mr Njekwa yesterday so that he could help police with investigation over the death of Mr Mulonda last week.

‘’ I can confirm that the former mayor Mr Aggrey Njekwa today turned himself in after we launched a manhunt for him. He has been arrested and charged with murder of Mr Albert Mulonda, he will be remanded in custody and will appear in court soon,” Mr Chitambo said.

It is alleged that a fight ensued between Mr Njekwa and deceased after the former accused the latter of being a wizard.

In the course of the fight, it is alleged that Mr Njekwa assaulted Mr Mulonda was then rushed to Livingstone general hospital where he passed on a week later.

At press time Mr. Njekwa who turned himself in at the police was in a company of current city mayor Milford Maambo and some councilors including family members.

Mr Njekwa told journalists two weeks ago that he witnessed a shock of his life when a known person was seen sprinkling unknown substances at his house at exactly midnight.

He said he identified the person as his neighbor Mr. Mulonda whom he suspected to be practicing witchcraft as alleged by many in the neighborhood.

He said he did not understand why Mr. Mulonda who was his neighbor would target him but disclosed that he was now living in fear and had reported the matter to the police.

  1. Please people get educated and move away from this witchcraft belief. If he had magical powers why didn’t he use them to fight you off? Hope they sentence you for a long time so you’ll be an example to others.

  2. Primitive and backward beliefs, only real in the minds of those who believe and practice them. Now this man will eat porridge because of his stupidity.

  3. Cage him. Njekwa is even worse than a wizard. There is absolutely no truth in his version of the events leading to his attack of the innocent old man. Did the old man bewitch his wife?

  4. So now lets how how consistent the Judicial system is here in Zambia. Last month, the murder cases reported on Lusaka Times had the death penalty ruling. People involved incest cases were getting 20 years.

  5. Sorry My Njekwa you over reacted ,no man can take the law in his own hands .See now jere yanukila .I also hear that he came to claim for his money for the charms he gave you to assist you in last mayor appointment.you should have paid him madala ngotho maningi Njekwa nyo !!!!!!

  6. …..when they say life is unpredictable, this is exactly what they mean…when Njekwa was being chauffeur driven in that Liv 1 Mayoral ceremonial car never did it occur to him that his older age will be spent in that filth lice infested over congested prison cells….on beans and salted porridge…
….atleast the old man spent his old age at his home with all the freedom he needed. Maybe the old man had a condition which even without the claimed assault, he would have died same time anyway…..because of Njekwa’s pompousness and abuse(accusing the old man a wizard) , the old man had to find a way to ‘bewitch’ him to spend the rest of his life in jail…..the old man just got a bit of some building sand and sprinkled on Njekwa’ yard and there he is now facing a jail term

  7. Beating a thief at his yard is not a crime. What was the deceased doing at midnight? He didn’t visit during day time?
Lets not give a blind eye to witchcraft, It exists undetected by common man unless you have charms.

    • And im sure the law does not say kill a wizard when you catch them at midnite? He should have reported him to police and let the law take its course. RIP old man!

  8. If you don’t believe in witchcraft then you are naive, mr mulonda might not have been one but witches are there and they kill don’t let ur western education cloud your judgement I have been to villages and seen some unexplained weird stuff, if you don’t want to believe then you best acknowledge
