Government has commissioned the construction of Vubwi district hospital in Eastern province.
The hospital will cost K13 million.
Minister of Health Joseph Kasonde said during the ground breaking ceremony that construction works of the first ever modern hospital in the district will start on January 15, 2015 and conclude within one year.
Dr. Kasonde said the hospital will consist of an outpatient department and an administration block.
He said the construction of Vubwi district hospital is an addition to the 207 functional health facilities in Eastern province.
Dr. Kasonde said the 207 health facilities include eight level one hospitals, 143 rural health centres and 49 health posts to cater for 1.8 million in the province.
He said government was targeting to construct 68 more health posts from the 650 that are being constructed countrywide.
Dr. Kasonde noted that the provision of effective primary health care services was a sure way of preventing diseases and health complications that would lead to major diseases.
He said the construction of Vubwi district hospital means that mothers and children will access quality health services and reduce the maternal and perinatal deaths.
Dr. Kasonde said the construction of the hospital will assist the country in having a healthy and productive population which would be able to contribute effectively to the social-economic development of the nation.
And Vubwi Member of Parliament Margaret Miti said the development will stop people from crossing to neighbouring Malawi to seek medical attention.
Ms. Miti said the over 45,000 people in Vubwi would soon be boasting of a district hospital as government was investing significantly in primary health care as defined in Patriotic Front (PF) basic health care package.
Under pressure to win votes. Build hospital and yet nurses and doctors are not paid, no medicines, no clean water, poor food production system and this results in more patients? Be real. The PF govt is now busy to show case what they should have been doing as a govt just because there is a by-election.
Since when? Are you okay? It is in the plan, projects do not get commissioned abruptly.

I don’t think that hospital will help Edgar Lungu win elections.
Maybe if he takes care his “only” mother left, he may get some blessings. Not the way we saw the conditions she lives in in pictures, when his “son” Lungu has so much money for elections.
