ECZ to resume the elections results updates today

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is to resume announcing results of the presidential by-election today, Priscilla Isaac, director of elections at the electoral commission told the voice of America.

The ECZ had earlier suspended announcing the tally, saying some qualified voters had not been able to cast ballots on Election Day due to delays blamed on inclement weather.

“We had concerns that we had over 21, 000 voters that had not been able to vote on the 20th, and were thus going to vote on the 21st and we felt that we didn’t want to put them in a position, where they might be influenced by the results that were already being announced,” said Isaac.

She called for patience as the electoral body goes through the process of ensuring the election is transparent and credible.

Ms. Isaacs also said it is unlikely that the winner of the election would be announced on Thursday.

“I think that would be rather early, because we would still have to wait for the totaling of the votes in those constituencies, where the voting did not take place in all the polling stations on the 20th,” she said.

“When we are informing each other please let’s use the official results from the electoral commission, which would have been available at the polling stations, and at the constituency centers, and there can only be one winner and that winner would be declared by the Electoral Commission of Zambia when we have all the results in,” said Isaac.

Ms. Isaac said the ECZ provides all political parties with verified results as part its transparency policies.

“They have their own copies from the field, from the polling stations in the constituencies, and are at liberty to verify what they have with what we give to them,” she said.

Isaac called on Zambia media organizations to only broadcast verified results from the electoral commission.

The ECZ is the only constitutionally mandated body to organize and declare the winner of any elections.

Any political party that disputes the outcome of the election is free to petition the Supreme Court within 14 days of the declaration of the final results of the vote, according to Isaac.

    • We await the final and offical results patiently from ECZ. For now let’s all just remain calm and get back to work for our families and communities. We need to use the same energy we use in blogging at work and I am sure Zambia’s output would increase no less than 2 fold. These politicians are set for life, win or lose, and that’s the reality while you continue bickering online. There is another election in 20 months and just hope some of the tribal gimmicks and voting we have seen won’t be repeated. We need unity, peace, reconciliation and development to prevail.

    • I read comments from people that Tongas should learn to live with others, just what do they mean? What about those married couples from different tribes, with one being Tonga? Why is it tribalism when Southerners vote for credible leadership?

      Let’s look at the Copperbelt province. Given how much that province contributes to our country’s GDP it should be a world class province by now. I just don’t understand how people can vote for the same rubbish politicians who only entered politics to make money for themselves. Zambians really need to wake up!

    • Zambian democracy, as we understand it, has matured from the look of things. This will put the incoming President under some amount of pressure not to let down the electorate (even if the % turnout was low, no one was disenfranchised). The President-elect will be under scrutiny from the outset. Without appearing to put anyone under pressure (which ‘one’ was well aware of when there was so much dust about), am sure it’s time to perform. The end of the momentous 90 days let reality dawn! Well done girls, Irene and Priscilla. The other girl has an un-indigenous sir name, am sure that has had no factor in all this process. It does not make sense for someone to go vote for Lungu when he can’t afford a meal and take his children to school because the cost of living is extremely high.

    An impeccable source discloses that State Security has already been sent to Edgar Lungu’s house which is now sealed. Electoral Commision of Zambia is expected to officially announce the election of Edgar Lungu as Zambia’s President elect by 12hours. ECZ ealier suspended the announcement of results due to others who were still voting earlier on Wednesday.

  22. What I said two months ago, I will repeat. HH will never win a presidential election. The weakest link in the Up and Down Party (UPND) is HH. Here are the reasons:
    1. When Mazoka died (And I voted for him even though He was from the south), Sakwiba Sikota was next in line to take over the presidency of UPND. But HH and his fellows from the South rose and blatantly and openly (through the newspapers) refused to be ruled by a Lozi and openly made their feelings known. Sakwiba was hounded out of the party.
    2. Just recently the UPN D was at it again. “We are proud to be called Bantu Botatwe party” they said. This term describes a small regional grouping in Zambia.
    3. Recent election utterances, the example of Mukombwe and company ranting that now was the time for a Tonga to rule.

  23. As I was saying earlier all these utterances make it hard for other tribes in Zambia to entrust HH with the presidency.

    Way forward for HH is to swallow his puffed up ego and apologise and come 2016 he may just nik it to plot 1. Minus this, I am afraid He will retire in the opposition camp.

    He needs to come down to earth with his inflated ego and begin listening to the grass roots and not just the middle class who seem to appreciate his entrepreneurship skills.

    he must be humble, “God opposes the proud but lifts the humble”. The first lesson in humility which he must show us is to humbly accept the 2015 presidential bye- election.

Truly the song is great and I feel some tribes in some way are are not realizing that the way they cast their votes already shows how tribalistic they are and how segregative their leadership will be. This is not acceptable in this civilised world to think as stone age dwellers. Does it mean those areas where the elections from other provinces with numbers of votes in thousands for the top 2 parties are doing the same as in those areas where one party is in Ten thousands and the 2nd is in ones? really not so, so let’s be civilized people.
