BRITISH High Commissioner to Zambia James Thornton and Alchemy Women Leadership has commended President Lungu for showing a strong desire towards promotion of gender equality.

Mr Thornton is happy with Mr Lungu’s appointment of women in crucial decision-making positions since he won the January 20 presidential election.

“The appointment of women in key government positions shows Mr Lungu’s commitment to gender equality. We in the United Kingdom are passionate on equal opportunities for men and women and we are pleased with Mr Lungu for giving key positions to women in the judiciary, police and Government,” Mr Thornton said.

He said with the appointment of Nalolo member of Parliament (MP) Inonge Wina as Vice-President, he is hopeful that the fight against discrimination of women in the country will be won.

Mr Thornton expressed confedence that Mrs Wina will deliver after showing commitment to advance women and girls agenda when she was Minister of Gender.
He said was also confident the gender-based violence (GBV) will be tackled.
Mr Thornton reiterated his government commitment to support Zambia.

The British high commissioner was speaking on the side-lines of a mentors indaba organised by Alchemy Women in Leadership were they were celebrating the appointment of Annabel Degroot as first female managing director of Zambian Breweries.

And host of the mentors’ indaba, Nicola Sharpe-Phiri applauded Mr Lungu for recognising the skills of Zambian women.

Judge Sharpe-Phiri said it inspires women in the country to work hard once they get recognition in the community at any level.
She urged women to step up and make a difference in society in their quest for gender equality.

And Mrs Degroot urged women to work hard if they were to achieve their goals.
She said “Do not try to be like men, work hard to get to your goals, support your fellow women, and take others along when climbing the ladder”.

And Guest Speaker Melaine Gross urged women to forge ahead even when they face challenges on the journey to pursue their dreams.

  1. Congratulations president Edgar Lungu. Jesus really did bless you and appoint you over his beloved Zambia. Now stay wise and rule diligently. I am watching you with an Eagles eyes. Will put checks and balances always. Fret not, Zambia is beautiful; you are but a leader not a dictator. No Satamania. You sending his cronies into bizarre missions abroad is good. Now fix the Zambian embassy in Washington my goodness. Talk about lazy workers, the Canada lol.

    • Western leaders will always praise the election of mediocre african leaders as long as they dont step on thier toes like Mugabe. Western governments benefit when africans elect incapable leaders without a vision. If today africa elected leaders who would rule to the benefit of africans, the west would be the losers.

  2. That promotion of women alcoholics worries me. Empowerment is beautiful, but ma dizi no no. Let us discuss wisely, like we do with Nawakwi and General Miyanda. Let us begin.

    • SOME PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE JUST BENT ON SEEING EVERYTHING THROUGH AN EVIL LENS, SEEMS U ALWAYS SEE THE WORLD IN BLACK & WHITE, NO COLOR. BELIEVE ME THERE’S COLOR TO THESE BLACK & WHITE THINGS U SEE. BUY NEW LENSES MAN, U ARE LEFT BEHIND. THE ENTIRE AFRICA AND REST OF THE WORLD SEES REAL COLORS IN LUNGU’S WORKS BUT U AND YOUR FELLOWS WHO GOT DOG’S EYES.

  3. Okay. While we welcome the appointment of women, we need to understand the nature of the appointment before we comment. Most of these promotions are done as rewards for favours and not really to promote gender equality. If Lungu, was really interested in gender equality he would push through a law that would enable each employer to have at 40-50% of women in key positions and these women should have credentials.

    • This is nonsense can you & your HH point out just two places where you suspect rigging, the ECZ went out of it way to just satisfy you, yet you can’t shut up for people to start working. Shem..

    • STILL BITTER ABOUT LOSING THE ELECTION. MAYBE THESE GUYS HAVE EVEN LOST THEIR ERECTION. MOVE ON UNDER 5s. ZAMBIA HAS UNBIASED COURTS AS COMPARED TO MOST AFRICAN COUNTRIES. IF YOU FEEL ROBBED TAKE THE MATTER TO THE COURTS OF LAW. JUST SAYING PF RIGGED THE ELECTION WON’T TAKE ANYWHERE. VERY SOON YOU WILL BE ACCUSING PF OF RIGGING YOUR ERECTIONS AFTER FAILING TO SATISFY YOUR WOMEN IN BED.

  4. ASonitoni siyani nzelu za ukapolo. Stop patronising our wise man from the East. He doesn’t need your shooing him on

    • The Shameless british,

They are so shameless that they can not show their faces. All these comments from their leadership are politically stupid and mocking to say the least.
They are just jealousy of the presence of the Chinese Investors in Zambia. They want to come back to Zambia to loot now that high grade copper ore, manganese, etc. are discovered in Luapula province.
They don’t want to sing the song of communism as a reason now but want to sponsor an opposition party to win election for their return. Mwaloba ilyauma (fished the dry ones)

  5. Gender equality for the the wrong reasons. …one has to simply look at Sata’s appointments…it was all window dressing. ..his reasons for appointing them was that they were less corrupt (but easier to control) Lungu appointed Wina because she is weaker the selfsame reason Sata appointed Scott.

  6. The Chinese are not serving your interests but their own, they bring labourers, they corrupt you to the core and you are still praising them. Most of your free medicines are from the Western world, your recent elections was mainly paid for by the Brits, criticise them fairly, but don’t make the Chinese as whiter than white. We should learn to look after ourselves, every one else is about taking what they can. At least when it comes to corruption the Brits have much better robust systems.

  7. Ati happy with inonge wins, pipo from the north are MAD. They wanted to keep the vice presidency. You r in trouble Lungu.

    • Stop telling lies Pf is a national party and the president has got power to appoint any body he feels he/she is loyal to him and the Party and can deliver to the expectation of the Zambian people. Nobody in Northern province or Muchinga is bitter about madam Wina being appointed the VP. She is a Zambian and a true member of PF who stood by the President in a very difficult and trying moment . She showed and demonstrated great leadership. Sorry PF is not a tribal party like UPND which looks at tribe. If you look at the composition of the govt today the President is Nsenga from Petauke,The Vice is Lozi ,the Secretary general is from Luapula and yet the founder of the party the late president was Bisa from Mpika in Muchinga province.
