The United Party for National Development (UPND) is considering going for the national general conference to elect the new party leadership ahead of the 2016 general elections.
UPND Deputy Spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo has told Qfm News that all that is being awaited is approval from the National Management Committee.
Mr Lifwekelo says if the NMC gives the go ahead to the convention, the party will hold the convention either this year or early next year.
He explains that all elective positions will be up for grabs during the convention.
Mr Lifwekelo says the party wants to instill confidence in the people by going to the convention and elect the new leadership.
Mr. Lifwekelo states that the issue has been pending on the table for quiet sometime now.
I urge you to allow all those who are interested to contest in a free a fair manner. I relish the challenge for the top position.
Do not fall for the trap of having anyone take the party as personal to holder. Fear no one but open up space for ideas. A robust party with strong intra party democracy will prepare it for governing.

Gen, I want to agree with you. The UPND manifesto is one of the best. The problem is how HH has made the Tongas to look like hated people when in fact not. He has managed to do this effectively and divided the country. With HH as President, it will be very difficult to reverse this perception because it has become entrenched. There is no question in my mind that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema is a good man. And that he means well for Zambia. However, the fact that he used the back door to ascend the party presidency – following the demise of legendary Anderson Mazoka, is what he has had to contend with. Though a competent leader, he has too much baggage weighing him down.

Zambian parties are not funded by public donations but by people connected to the front person. When that person goes, so does the funding. Unless another money magnet shows up, that party is likely to be extinguished.
For instance, the only pillar holding FDD is Nawakwi. Kriston Tembo mortgaged his farm to support his quest for presidency and when it did not work out, the Sheriffs closed in on him. He lost the farm.
No one can deny that the trips around the country that Edith took leading up to the last elections were funded by her purse.

PF is finally getting closer to destabilizing its earn number one, UPND. It is in the interest of PF for UPND to go for that silly convention, so they are plant massive devices of division. There is no need for convention at this time, even them PF they had no convention, since they only voted by show of hands. Democracy can only be accepted if tested. so far Zambians have no confidence in UPND. This is what we have been advising UPND. When you hold a convention never restrict positions to certain individuals. To some UPND were reacting with hostility whenever we advised the party to go for convention! If the party maintains the same leadership arrangement, bear me witness, the party party will worse than it did in the last election. No “Wamuyayaya in politics”. What people should know is that some of the senior UPND leaders are not capable of convincing people to elect them for leadership because they lack what it takes to be, especially president of the whole country!!!!

What the genuine members decide is no business of outsiders, that’s why non club members do not participate in club running matters. As outsiders ours is to only participate in voting for a national leader.

Going for convention and come up with the same people is as good as not doing it. Of cause there is going to be doctoring of positions to go for preferred individuals but this is bad. This convention shud come up with a new president and SG if it has to be a success otherwise putting hh back and sg will just render the party more useless

Who is UPND fooling? The outcome is a foregone conclusion. Nobody will challenge HH for the presidency of the party. HH will go through unopposed. Only other positions will be contested for. At least PF gave us some interesting drama with 11 candidates competing for the presidency. The UPND convention is such a dull predictable affair. Why doesn’t HH just appoint the other office bearers of the party?

Your tribe or party, which is Tonga party or Bantu botatwe should be the last party to talk about tribalism. For example, look at UNZA’s vet medicine. It is all Tonga affair down to a cleaner. If you have a Tonga as CEO of a certain company, it is unlikely that a Bemba will be there. You claim as Tongas to be rich, but I believe it is because of tribalism where you employ your relatives and empower them financially. This should stop! I would urge the Government to scrutinize parastatals or companies and those found wanting, in terms tribalism, should be answerable.
