Veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga has described the hinted possible merger of the ruling PF and opposition MMD as being an over statement.
Dr. Mwaanga does not think any merger between the two political parties can be possible with the current state of the MMD which appears to have three wings as was evidenced during the January 20th 2015 presidential election.
He says the decision for the MMD to merge with the ruling PF cannot be made by just one person or a small group of people without extensive consultations being involved.
In an interview with Qfm News Dr. Mwaanga has observed that if there is going to be a merger of such a kind it will require major decisions to be made by appropriate organs of the former ruling party for such a decision to be taken.
Dr. Mwaanga notes that this is why he wonders which faction of the MMD the ruling PF is said to be in consultations with.
Asked what would be the impact on the country’s political landscape if the MMD and the ruling PF merged, Dr. Mwaanga has declined to speculate.

I consider this announcement as hasty and idealistic to say the least. Whoever is leading the bargaining talks on the side of the MMD must be re-analyzed if he or she really commands the respect and support of a wider institutional membership at the base of the pyramid? PF got to be very careful because they may just find themselves bargaining with individuals who have zero support of the party. Such political merchants are many and may just be a very simplistic lone wolfs chasing for positions with zero dividends to PF. Such would not offer any seismic shift in favor of PF. MMD is not RP or NCC.
Joining forces in order to rescue our fledgling democracy and the nation in a dangerous state of polarization is a democratic and progressive option as long as it is not done on the basis of just embracing a narrow fractured group of ethnic and sometimes religious bigots whose main intention is to secure themselves jobs at the expense of their bigger than them institutional membership’s interest. Doing so risks a situation of dissatisfaction in both PF and MMD where the majority may remain unperturbed and resolved in realigning themselves. This may be in the opposing direction against those merchants considered detractors and behind distractions. Any decision by the PF should never ignore the main cleavages in the Zambia’s current over growing division between and among tribes.
That will be the Fall of PF. I think we have forgotten that People Voted for PF to get MMD out of power.
If PF becomes MMD then whats the solution?? UPND.. So Lungu has to be smart else he will be out of Office come 2016.

twenty first century politics is highly dynamic and persons with static minds and theories will only be surprised as what is happening. its high time zambia took a different step in shaping the political system in the country. in order for the 50 +1 to be realised we need to reduce on the participants. we only need two opposition parties at any given time to be providing chechs and balances not what we see today. vj should just encourage these mergers because they mean well for our political system and growing democracy.

This will not be a merger . It is PF taking over the MMD shell. The Bemba block in MMD will go along with their eastern allies running PF. The pragmatic MMD outsiders who supported HH in the recent by-election will join UPND. That’s it. MMD will be dead and gone, worse than UNIP which still exists in name only.
If PF can be absorbed by MMD tribalism will vanish and the Zambian people will enjoy peace, that peace they used to enjoy during UNIP, MMD and UNPD .

PF is a Bemba party which has now been taken over by RB and easterners. The Bembas in PF are not happy and are scheming to take over their party back under the control of the north. It’s the only way to say thank you to RB by merging MMD with PF and thereby “hopefully” win the 2016 elections by a larger margin. ECL has been told that with the help of RB in the just ended bye elections, PF would have surely lost, so he has believed it and he is in a hurry to do something lest he loses power! If PF is strong, why merge with a seemingly weak, fragmented MMD party? I am aware that by end of 2015 or early 2016, the PF Veep will be from MMD so as to strengthen the merger. SG Chama has been indirectly hinting that should merger happen, ECL should not be subjected to party elections, only central committee….so what is in it for MMD really? To whose benefit is the merger PF or MMD members or is it their top leadership to benefit only? There’s more than we can read…
I Feel sorry for PF appointees who have been forewarned that if you don’t follow ECL’s commands then “get out and leave”. There cometh a day when ECL and Chama will announce the merger and those who will object will be reminded to “get out or leave”……that warning was not from without. Wake up so called “PF founders”. PF must be discussing with the legitimate leader of MMD, and there is none at the moment. So is PF merging with a shell?
PF must be careful otherwise they will be importing total chaos with very little time to mobilise and campaign before 2016. Surely PF wants to learn from last by election where they nearly lost because they spent 60 out of 90 days quarreling instead of campaigning.
If PF is serious about merging with MMD first ask them to put their house in order. We don’t want to give another chance to HH this time, he has proved himself not to be the leader Zambia was looking for. H.E. Edgar is doing just fine.
What you should realize is the fact that there are two factions in Pf. There is pf cartel and these are the plunderers which now defecting to for rainbow party . the other group of Pf is the one lead by Edgar and mean well for the Zambian resources. VJ just wants MMD to join his tribesman, HH. When he jumped up to support his tribal inclinations, he never said MMD cld not merge with HH. The 3 factions talked about will be swallowed, the bigger 1 by the party with a Govt purse. the other 1 by HH (as is VJ’s wish), and the other will either remain in oblivion or will hand itself to the highest bidder.
