Government has announced a further reduction in the wholesale price of mealie meal from a maximum of K61.00 for breakfast meal to K56.00 per 25Kg bag.
Agriculture Minister Given Lubinda says the wholesale price of Roller meal will not exceed K37.00 per 25Kg bag.

Mr Lubinda has told Parliament in a ministerial statement today that the reduction in mealie meal prices follows consultations held between his ministry and the millers.

He explains that the reduction in mealie meal prices is as a result of government’s decision to allow the Food Reserve Agency to offload maize on the domestic market at a subsidized price from K76.00 per 50Kg bag of maize to K65.00.

Mr Lubinda says the new prices for mealie meal have been arrived at in view of the fact that some of the millers are still holding on to maize procured at higher prices than the subsidized price, and that government will from time to time review this position.

He has also clarified that the K56.00 per 25Kg of breakfast meal and roller meal is not a uniform price but rather a maximum price government has agreed upon with the millers, and that government expects others to sale mealie meal at even lower prices than K56.00.

The Agriculture Minister has since appealed to retailers across the country to stick to the recommended retail margin of K3.00 per 25Kg bag of both roller and breakfast meal.

Mr Lubinda has further disclosed that government has approved the sale of up to one million metric tonnes of maize on both the local and export market by the Food Reserve Agency.

And Mr Lubinda says government has allowed the importation of an initial 75,000 metric tonnes of Wheat to forestall the shortage arising from the wheat deficit of 150,000 metric tonnes from the production of 2014.

Mr Lubinda says the country’s wheat demand for the year is 396,000 metric tonnes, while the expected production for 2014 is 215,593 metric tonnes.

He has attributed the decline in wheat production to insufficient water for irrigation especially in wheat production areas such Mkushi.

Mr Lubinda adds that government has decided to weave import duty on wheat imported from non SADC regions.

He has assured consumers that there will be no shortage of wheat or wheat flour products.

Meanwhile Mr Lubinda says preliminary forecast indicate that the country will record another surplus maize production this year.
He says this is despite some areas in the country experiencing drought.

    • so imwe ba PF, i dont understand your economics especially after Sata died!,,,, Let ask you, does it mean the mealie meal price is connect to your failing kwacha?,,,,, and does it mean that when you delay paying the farmers for their maize, the price of meali meal reduces??
am starting to miss Sata,,, not these people you put there who faint from hangover

    • When we said subsidies are needed for fuel and stapple food, PF minions ran amok accusing us in UPND of malice.

What is PF doing now? Correct answer is dancing to HH ‘s tune! Had PF listened to what HH said, all this PF mess would not have been with us in the first place.

This is a good move which should be extended to fuel and electricity as HH said. Then people’s cost of living will fall.

      Viva HH.

    • PF are already in a campaign mood, I can see. Yes, 2016 is not a long way off! Wishing you the best of luck as you inch your way to the finishing line.

    • I have a white friend who I cooked nshima for and now he want it everyday. The nshimamania has even spread like a cancer. Go nshima go nshima!

    • @1 WHICH WORK? FORCING MILLERS TO REDUCE PRICES OF MAIZE MEAL ISN’T INCREASED PRODUCTION OF MAIZE. NEITHER IS IT PUTTING UP MODERN(state-of-the-art) MILLING PLANTS IN RURAL AREAS. MILLING PLANTS IN RURAL AREAS WILL TRIGGER MASSIVE PRODUCTION OF MAIZE, SORGHUM, MILLET, RICE,ETC TO FEED THOSE MILLING PLANTS. AS A MATTER OF CONSEQUENCE MILLION TONES OF MAIZE MEAL WILL BE PRODUCED TO FLOOD DOMESTIC MARKETS LEAVING EVEN ABUNDANT SURPLUS FOR EXPORT TO CONGO AND OTHER NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES.

    • PF this reduction in price is welcome. However, recall you promised better times than MMD. This implies bunga prices at retail should not be more than K48 per 25kg breakfast, the price you inherited in 2011. Nothing else means MMD was a better govt.

  1. PF is really taking us backwards!

Do they not remember the UNIP price controls that caused a shortage of everything until we had every ZCBC in the country with empty shelves?

And when there was cooking oil, standing in lines hundreds of meters the whole day?

The Poor Fools are treating the symptoms.

    Cure the disease you ID!OTS!

  2. Lubinda is lying just like the way Yaluma lied last week in parliament over fuel. Whom are you fooling. Its like you pf ministers you sleep, dream and eat lies. Mealimeal is still expensive shame on you. There will not even be maize surplus this year beacuse of poor distribution patterns in the country. PF thugs this year njala iza munyopola. No wonder sata fired you because of your lies…

  3. do not depend on our leaders.you can die poor.they are not strong enough to fight the problems of a nation .these are region leaders like luapula province.wait for a new generation to produce real men not these money lovers and selfish leaders

    • Don’t you know that the same subsidies is where Sata got it wrong till in his grave. The move by Given is welcome, but this has to be extended to fuel and agriculture inputs then you will see balance in the economy and our friends in Katondo will have it a bit easy to operate

    • They think they are NOT BLACK!!!!!!!!!. They easily forget their roots. they will surely come back one day. Forgive them my dear.

  4. A retailer will never agree to be selling a bag of 25kg breakfast for only 3 kwacha.Even when millers were selling at K53 ,meali meal in shops was being sold at above K65.

  5. Edgar Lungu needs to be buried alive.

He is the most useless man to rule Zambia.

May his illness claim the maggot’s life one day, preciously b4 the end of 2015.

    • A sataanist will never rule Zambia, we greatly thank God Almigty
for this. Children of God will ever be rejoicing in this nation but
sataanists will ever be crying after presidential elections outcome.
In 2016 ni fipelwa na ba Yawe again.

You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

  6. @protector, I prophesy you and your entire stinking family will die before the end of this year. I appeal to all peace loving zambians to pray for your death.

    • Hey! Don`t wish him/her death, the best is to teach him/her love and pray for his/her salvation. Mind you, this one is in bondage and is a slave of sin. The fact is, “a sinner must sin”.

Please learn to defeat evil by good works of love.

  7. Ba Lubinda. What is your problem? don’t even announce something which has no value on people’s life. Remember 2016 is around the corner. You think you are clever: people are suffering in the community. People have no jobs, where do you think one would get the k56 00 you are talking about.k56 00 is to much reduce the price further.

    • Create yo own job. Who do yu think is going to create a job for yu. That’s the mistake yu make expecting Govt to do everything for u

  8. Just love that guy, the humble President for all Zambians 2015 to 2016, and then from 2016 to 2021, the one and only Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Some can only be green with envy.
Some are busy slowing down his progress, others wishing him failure, yet others wishing him ill health.
But know this, you will not succeed in your dirty schemes but maybe only slow him down so that the economy has a bumpy ride. But hear me again, you will not succeed but simply make the people suffer, the very people whose votes you crave, no wonder some have never been and will never be President of Zambians, of God’s people…….it’s agony!

  9. “………..government’s decision to allow the Food Reserve Agency to offload maize on the domestic market at a subsidized price……..”

Are subsidies stealthily creeping back through the back door?

  10. So subsidies given on the back of unpaid farmers. Interesting. If only Zambians knew the FRA losses that are covered using their tax money, they would throw these guys out.

  11. Ba Lubunda is this what is happening on the ground? When you removed subsidies, didn’t you foresee a rise in prices? ba PF you Pathetic F!!!ls

  12. Ba pemarlink! if you think, it is not the role of the government to reduce the price of mealie meal then it’s your responsibility, to reduce the price of mealie meal.Do it for the Zambian people. You should always think for others;for poor Zambians. You should also think out side the box.

  13. Now that our President is back, fit and in control of national matters, I see development coming faster than meets the eye! All those companies that went on recess are back on and the projects worked on, I see no chance for the opposition!

Your excellence, just be focused and encourage Ministers like Lubinda to continue working even harder. I see the price of mealie meal at K32. I see quality and good road network done in our beautiful country, I see Universities coming, I see excellent hospitals manned by motivated workforce, I see ZESCO powering the nation and opening up rural areas, I see a motivated youthful country under the leadership of Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, I see modern airports with increased traffic, victory certain for PF til 2021, viva ECL, I see a sustained economy!!

  14. Twarumba maningi bataa!! We will vote for Edgar Chagwa Lungu and PF in the 2016 Presidential and general elections in 2016 because we are tired of empty promises from our tribal cousin HH and his desperate tribal mates.

PF just continue working hard, you are assured of firm and solid victory as we will not be cheated by UPND in Southern Province when we can clearly see that you an action man like your predecessor!!

Ifintu ni Lungu and PF 2016.
