GOVERNMENT has castigated former Church of God overseer John Mambo for casting aspersions on President Lungu’s health.
Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services Chishimba Kambwili said Government has gone out of its way to ensure there is no secrecy by updating the nation on the President Lungu’s health.
“Government finds as unchristian Bishop John Mambo’s aspersions about His Excellency President Edgar Lungu’s health,” he said.
Mr Kambwili (above), who is chief government spokesperson, said it is unfortunate that people like Bishop Mambo who should unite the nation and pray for good health of the President are throwing scorn on Government for its goodwill.
Mr Kambwili said in a statement yesterday that the nation has been urging Government in the past to be transparent concerning the health of the President and that the current administration has gone out of its way to ensure that Zambians are updated.
“This is why we get disappointed when people who are supposed to unite the nation like Bishop Mambo are used to pour scorn on Government’s goodwill. When Government is quiet, the likes of Bishop Mambo are quick to accuse us of being secretive; when we talk, we are accused of not saying the truth,” Mr Kambwili said.
The minister said it unchristian for a clergyman to make such utterances.
He said Bishop Mambo is expected to pray for the President and not doubt God’s power when he intercedes in someone’s life.
“Bishop Mambo is supposed to preach faith and trust in God and not to join the bandwagon of malicious people hell-bent on peddling falsehoods about the President’s health,” he said.
Mr Kambwili noted that it is hypocritical for Bishop Mambo to stop special assistant to the President for press and public relations Amos Chanda from updating the nation on President Lungu’s health because he is not a medical doctor.
He said Bishop Mambo himself is not a medical doctor yet he is telling the nation that one cannot be declared fit straight from the theatre.
“Bishop Mambo says he has been in theatre before and that it takes time to recover. Is Bishop Mambo equating his ailment to that of President Lungu?
“Is he telling the nation that doctors’ prognoses are always the same? Where did Bishop Mambo learn his medicine?” Mr Kambwili said.
Bishop Mambo is quoted in The Post as having doubted the fitness of President Lungu and that Mr Chanda should desist from informing the nation on the President’s health because he is not a doctor.

Were you to buy a car that compels you to take it to the garage for this and that and which finally stops on its own on the road, for no apparent reason, wouldn’t you be apprehensive about such a car? John Mambo should not even comment on other people’s illnesses because when he was sick himself to the point of death we respected and sympathized with him. Unfortunately he has a big mouth such that he forgets that only yesterday he looked worse than a patient with full blown AIDS. Why are people so hypocritical?
