MINISTER of Youth and Sport, Chishimba Kambwili, addresses a developmental meeting at Kawawa Primary school in Kasenengwa constituency in Chipata on Wednesday
Chishimba Kambwili

Government says it concerned with the quality of some radio stations that are promoting hate speech in in the country .

Information and Broadcasting services minister Chishimba Kambwili it was for this reason that the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA ) needed to regulate and to take keen interest in what Broadcasting stations in the country were broadcasting.

He said this when he met Independence Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Brigadier General Justin Mwale in his office today.

This was disclosed in a statement availed to ZANIS by the Ministry’s Press Unit.

“There are two radio stations in Southern province that do not play songs done in a certain language but there are people from other areas that are living in the province and it is of no harm playing songs done in a different language.” he said.

He said the two radio stations and a television station in Lusaka had been summoned to appear before the Authority for using revolting language during their broadcasts.

He added that IBA should not be seen as a body that stifles freedom of expression but as a regulator that wants improved broadcasting.

And Mr. Kambwili has urged Multichoice Zambia General Manager Simon Bota to consider reducing the hiked subscription fees.

He said the increase of DStv fees is depriving people of their source of information because they will not afford to pay and requested that the company thought of giving people their rebates.

The pay –TV stations has come under fire by most Zambians after it recently hiked its subscription fees.

  1. Mr Kambwili should have done his homework well by researching throughout the Zambia and see if other stations in Northern,Eastern and Luapula particularly play music from southerners. What I know is that they do not hence the retaliation. Otherwise, his statement is already hate speech from government. He is one of those fanning tribalism in the country.

    • The man is too dumb to think before he speaks, it’s like asking a radio station in the Mid-West of the United States to play rap music or expecting a radio station in the African American hood to blue-gras Music.

    • He spends time in the office planning responses and attacks on perceived opposition rather than on formulating strategies for advancement of the technology and information sector in Zambia. Clearly he has no clue as to his job description and expectation.

    • Look at how govt appointments to the Foreign Service, Senior Civil Service jobs, Boards of directors it is all people from the same region. Now surely how can this be One Zambia, One Nation? Go to Zambian Embassies abroad and listen to what language is spoken….and Kambwili has the nerve to talk about hate speech!

    • I was ion Kasama a few months ago and listened to the community radio station there, they did not play a single song from any other region other than Bemba songs. Kabwili the hatred you have for Southerns will eat you up. Leave them to enjoy their songs, otherwise ask that radio station from your region to play songs from other tribes first. What a disappointing and dull leader you are.

  2. Media houses that are owned and financed by non-Bembas should not be obliged to promote Bemba culture. If Chimbwili wants to promote Bemba language in Southern Province he should go there and set up his Bemba language radio and TV stations. Does anybody broadcast in chiTonga in Luapula, Muchinga and Northern Province? Butoto!

    • BA ZED PEOPLE MULI BABUFISANA. IN KASAMA AND EASTERN PROVINCE YOU WOULD HEAR SONGS IN LOZI, BEMBA, TONGA, AND KAONDE.

  3. Local broadcasting is exactly that; local! It is for the benefit of the local community. The example given is true of all local broadcasters in the country except for those in cosmopolitan cities. ZNBC and others with a broader reach, must broadcast national. The hate broadcasting you are talking about is only your perception Bwana Minister; it is in your mind.

  4. Brand minister stop this kind of hate speech. Mbebas sing their own songs. Hopanis sing theirs too. Ngombe enjoy their music. Monkeys jump around sing their own songs. even the tundanjis sing their own shamukolos. All in al, I can only exclaim to say what low life minister we have in you! Znbc is national and the rest are local

  5. KAMBWILI FAT ALBERT THATS WHY IT IS CALLED MULTICHOICE YOU A CHOICE TO PAY OR NOT TO PAY,ALA MALABISH FAT ALBERT

    • Private companies are meant to be Private. You have a choice(Multi Choice Zambia). Where does Kambwili come in here? This is a private company not a government organisation. I am convinced beyond reasonabel doubt that Kambwili does not understand his job description…Are you going to comment on my girl friend as well Iwe Muntu Iwe.
Starting from next year for instance, the South African govt have given about 17 private companies licenses to open up digital sate light TV station(Pay Channel). This is the only way to cut down on peoples costs by encouraging competition not ukubwata bwata fye ba Kambwili……We are heading no where with such Honourables who are now dishonourable….Wrong character for Ministry of Info.

  6. Oh dear just when you think the embarrassment is over someone of your colour farts. Zambia, how long will you continue this charade till you can once more raise your head and look everyone in the eye without shame.

  7. why should a community radio station in Southern province play music in a language not common there? The key word is “community”

  8. Iwe’ Big K, why so of late Ku bwetuka- bwetuka!??
Stop drinking “Red Dragon” Energy drinks.
    Don’t say you weren’t warned!!

  9. Am now getting concerned, what is the job of an Information and Broadcasting services minister?? Is it spending days writing speeches just to bark nonsense at institutions and people?? Sit down.

    • For sure………wrong character in a ministry that requires diplomacy and a person who is able to use correct language…..Not aba bakawayawaya from Copperstone University. This is the problem when a country has been outnumbered by so many fools.

  10. Mr. President, this was a wrong appointment kindly reconsider before it inflicts more damage to your adminstration. Keep him at your own peril.

    • I agree with you by 110%. Kambwili is a disaster. We all remember how SATA moved him from foreign Affaires and the othe ministry before he was taken to sports and became FAZ president. There is no quality in this man……..Just shouting and thinking after. It shall be difficulty for ECL to remove this guy from this portofolio because ECL has to care about his health first before stressing himself with issues of the nation…….Free fall of the Kwacha, Fuel shortage, Mineral Tax and the disappointed members of his party like Kalaba……we are headed for a dead end……..

    • If ECL will listen to the people over Kambwili then I will be his greatest supporter and I will believe that he is his own man……This Kambwili does not fit into modern politics…..Can ECL Lungu manage this challenge…….. Is this the VIVA we were doing together Edgar at UNZA? No Edgar….you and me were progressive…..mmmmmmm…Katwishi!

  11. For that, I concur with the minister in totality. Kenyans used vernacular radio stations in 2007/2008 and a tribal war erupted. Thousands died. Even in print media, a little courtesy won’t hurt. These are, by and by, avenues of tribal animosity if they go unchecked. I am talking from an experienced perspective. We lost our loved ones, children became orphans because of dialect-planned wars. Freedom has responsibilities. I am sometimes surprised to read some comments. Our african morals are highly eroded(total moral decay). Life is precious . I welcome criticism but I have forewarned you beforehand in case of any eventuality. keep up minister and leave no stone unturned.Your effort counts.

    • Ba Kabwili….you have to believe now that Zambians have caught up with you on the issues of the Bembas. You have been thinking Zambia is only for the Bembas but now you have it strange that people can not be fooled any more. How many Bembas are in foreign service, in cabinet, in the high positions in the civil service…..the different boards_ check the Energy regulation Board for instance….The list goes on. Now that your self acclaimed tribe in Zambia is finding it difficult to fool the Lozis, Lundas, Ka Luvales, Tongas, Lambas, Lenjes, Ngonis, Chewas, Tumbukas and the others, you want to start thinking that the others are tribalists….No No, No No….enough is enough. Action is louder than words instead of just saying One Zambia One Nation…..Not enough…..action speaks louder…

  12. The public is bound to be sick on looking at Kambwili dirt nostrils in that attire likened to a fugitive mercenary on the run.

  13. Will do a research if radio Mano and other community radios in Northern, Muchinga and Luapula provinces play Tonga songs. This minister always misses the point, community radios are for that locality and whoever is in that place must learn that language, problem is that most Bembas do not want to learn other people’s languages and that is not our problem if you do not want to embrace diversity. Your bwana minister is to formulate and explain policy and not to POLICE!

  14. mwabbunda .boss.com.
you tell to teach children in language of the locals in another vain you condemn them for playing music teaching people in the language of the locals.MWABBUNDA BOSS. Kikikikikikikiki.

  15. It is a pity that this entire government is pre-occupied with occupation of the Southern Province. The Tonga people generally look docile like the tortoise. In that quietness and ‘docility’ lies great wisdom, intellectualism, tact, resolve and independent mind. They know how to shape themselves up even in the heat of hatred against them. Look at the most hated people in the world, the Jews. They are ten percent of the world population but without much noise, they control much of global wealth. Kambwili will go but still leave the Tonga people occupying their space! No government can function effectively without their contribution. I love you cousins.
